In episode 63 I talk to Skyzoo about Eugene McDaniels, an American rapper from Yonkers, New York. He began his career in the 1990s as a member of the rap trio The Lox, managed by Ruff Ryders and signed with Bad Boy. After leaving the label in 1999, they signed a joint venture deal between Interscope and Ruff Ryders. He is currently signed to Def Jam and D-Block. Jadakiss' debut solo album, Kiss Tha Game Goodbye, was released in 2001. He has released three more solo studio albums, another album with the Lox, and an album with fellow rapper Fabolous. In 2007, Jadakiss signed with Jay-Z's Roc-A-Fella and Def Jam, which, with Ruff Ryders, co-released his 2009 album The Last Kiss. Altogether, he has released five studio albums, most recently Ignatius in 2020.
In episode 60 I talk to Rachid Fakhre (Spang Sisters) about Eugene McDaniels, an indelible stamp on the face of modern music. His career as an artist, songwriter, and producer not only spanned decades and genres, but entire generations, weaving its way through the work of fellow artists, often marking their successes as well as taking its own trailblazing path. Eugene McDaniels always arrived in the first wave - seeking then finding new, and sometimes strange, territories. He will always be known as one of the pioneers, wherever his work and words take him. Even from its inception, his career was destined to rattle the establishment. His first Billboard hits as Gene McDaniels, “A Hundred Pounds of Clay,” and “Tower of Strength,” shot to the Billboard Top 10 on the mainstream pop charts in an era where music by black artists was relegated to “race music.” A decade after his initial successes, Eugene planted a flag for the emerging black consciousness movement, reclaiming his name, his identity as an artist, and declaring a new purpose for the socially explosive Outlaw and Headless Heroes of the Apocalypse albums.
The second monthly episode of the Knowledge Breaks series is dedicated to the great Eugene McDaniels aka the Left Rev McD. McDaniels took a turn in the late 1960s from singing more straight-ahead jazz and soul singing to much more politically-themed works, both song by himself as well as written for others, such as the song "Compared to What" made famous by Les McCann and Eddie Harris. I think many beat-heads and record fiends know about McDaniels' epic "Headless Heroes of the Apocalypse" album for the samples and its rarity, but the songs on the album scared the U.S. power structure so much that McDaniels was essentially blacklisted by his own record label. This didn't stop him however from setting up his own publishing company, which allowed him to survive on the royalties from his song writing, which includes the classic "Feel Like Making Love." There wasn't a tremendous amount of interview or vocal snippets available but I found a few great ones that I recommend listening to in full below. Since many of the breaks on "Headless Heroes" are well-known, I tried to mix in a few of his other works as well as covers and more obscure songs. His music and words are HIGHLY recommended and I hope everyone checks out his songs if you haven't before. Clips on this mix are from some great videos linked on my Soundcloud page. Please share!

April is National Poetry Month, and we're celebrating with this week's episode featuring one of America's most celebrated modern poets: Nikki Giovanni. The National Writers Series has been graced by Giovanni's presence twice over the years – once in 2018 to discuss her book A Good Cry, and for this conversation in 2013, just before the release of Chasing Utopia: A Hybrid, one part memoir, one part book of poetry. Giovanni has also authored many other works of poetry, nonfiction, and children's literature over her decades-long career, and earned accolades including being named “Woman of the Year” by multiple major magazines and one of Oprah Winfrey's “Living Legends.” Our episode today is guest-hosted by Leigh Haber, books editor at O, The Oprah Magazine. Our episode begins with a look back at Giovanni's childhood neighborhood in late 60's Harlem, where she counted musical and theatrical luminaries like Morgan Freeman, Eugene McDaniels, Cornell Dupree, and Sidney Poitier as her neighbors… --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/nationalwritersseries/message
Hace medio siglo… Was selecting these tracks as people went to the polls...was feeling a range of emotions and wanted to play tracks that felt serious, hopeful, powerful, and spoke to the need for urgent social change (not that I personally believe presidential elections impact much social change, but this election seems more of a moment than simply an election). Recorded the mix the next day, with votes still being counted, but results showing that no matter who wins, millions upon millions of white people in this country still support a fascist white nationalist even after four years of lies, violence and death. I am trying to still be hopeful but it is hard. Tracklist: Sam Cooke, Earth Wind and Fire, Cannonball Adderley, Eugene McDaniels, Pharoah Sanders, Bobby Hutcherson
My guest today is a torch bearer of melodic improvisation. A master of melodies, chromatic modal patterns of improvisation that open space for drummers like Eddie Marshall and Joe Chambers who say "Hello to the Wind." My guest came of age under the iron man sweetheart Eric Dolphy when he went by the more formal Robert. But his endearing nature, positive path of constant creation created love amongst his bandmates so soon he was known as Bobby. His impact on the east coast jazz scene was heavy. He showed up and Rudy Van Gelders studio with Bob Cranshaw and Al Harewood playing solos on Grant Green records that my generation perseveration over. The crisp Angular feeling of the music from hard bop to post bop with a mix of avant garde more rhythm based solos. More rooted in the blues. The music was evolving organically and my guest was a Sage and spirit to many young jazz fanatics like Jack Fulks and session drummer Jim Keltner who would sit in the front row of some swampy bar to watch my guest and Charles Lloyd give literal interpretations of themselves with a little Milt Jackson and Jimmy Lunceford mixed in. My show is about lineage. Tracing the roots of music on this continent to its origins. The birthplace of modern jazz is The Americas and it spread out to the west coast to clubs like The Keystone Korner where my other guest found a home for himself nestled in between a police station and the Inflated Tear of "Change" sung so poignantly by Eugene McDaniels in the opening clip. My guests humbleness and groundedness is what makes him a transcendent figure much like my other guest who played keyboards for awhile and than became an impresario running the most elastic, flexible, swinging jazz club in the Bay Area. It was the greatest because he diversified the music, it felt like a home with the cornbread and the continual appearances from my guest and Harold Land, Sonship Woody Theus Woody Shaw and thousands of other Eulipian characters. Both my guests have a deep affection for one another and it runs decades deep as they have taken the roller coaster of life which they are still on. Keeping the world safe for bebop, re-bop and all other contiguous orbital love Bobby Hutcherson and Todd Barkan, welcome to the JFS. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jake-feinberg/support

Idris Muhammad's birthday was November 13, and so I thought I'd do a tribute episode to the legendary drummer (RIP) whose sound shaped so much of jazz, soul, funk, rock and later hip-hop. I was very lucky to witness his greatest once, several years ago at the Blue Note when he was playing with Ahmad Jamal's group. So here's a few tunes - only one from his own releases, while the rest are records he played on and shaped in his own way. I tried to stay away from the well-known classics but don't worry, it's all super funky. Tracklist: Idris Muhammad, Horace Silver, Charles Kynard, Grant Green, Shirley Scott, Leon Spencer, Eugene McDaniels, Ernest Ranglin

In Hour 1 it's singer, songwriter and producer Nick Hakim, who grew up in a household overflowing with musical diversity and cites influences ranging from Marvin Gaye and Curtis Mayfield, to Madlib and MF Doom, to South American folk and DC punk. He independently built a following through the release of his critically acclaimed self-released EPs Where Will We Go, Pt. 1 and Where Will We Go, Pt 2. May 2017 marked the release of his debut full-length album, 'Green Twins', which featured contributions from Jesse & Forever and the Onyx Collective and was an experimental step forward with emotional heft gleaned from experiences in the years since the first EPs. He had this to say about his mix; "These are songs that I love right now.. I appreciate you taking the time to listen. With all this madness happening around us, listening to music is where I always find solitude and peace. Have a nice day and enjoy. Be safe out here" In Hour 2 we hand over to Astronautica, a singer/songwriter and electronic producer whose music captures the eclectic nature of Los Angeles’ experimental beat scene and its connections to different cultures around the globe. She was drawn into the L.A.’s underground musical community swirling around Low End Theory, and quickly became addicted to the burgeoning beat sounds of the West Coast. She has been signed to Alpha Pup Records for the last five years, and has launched a slew of widely acclaimed releases with the label. Her latest album is Death Valley, which she wrote and recorded over the last three years at her home studio in Los Angeles. She told us; "This is a collection of songs that I'm currently listening to, songs that have been an inspiration in some of my past works, and my latest tracks off of my most recent LP, 'Death Valley.' Living in LA, I spend a lot of time in my car driving through many streets and neighborhoods, my favorite is when I'm driving late at night after all the traffics subsided listening to music with the windows down, I made this mix to evoke that feeling." When we approached Bardo Martinez of Chicano Batman, we figured he'd go with a left-field album choice and he did not disappoint. Headless Heroes of the Apocalypse was a cult LPs for years, one of the most overtly political albums of the entire '70s (least of all on Atlantic Records!) and might have been wholly forgotten if not for '90s hip-hop producers rediscovering it and using it as sample fodder. However, all groovy groove aside, Headless Heroes is also an astonishing album in regards to McDaniels' explicit politics regarding everything from the U.S. treatment of Native Americans to blue eyed minstrels to Watergate. It was supposedly blacklisted by no less than the Vice President of the U.S. (Spiro Agnew). As Chicano Batman are no strangers to merging message and music, it was the perfect LP for Bardo and us to dig into, least of all in this current political moment.
