Chaos is the rule of the day, with markets, companies, governments and individuals being rapidly buffeted by events and change. Technology is exacerbating that chaos by offering asymmetric leverage to more people. On the positive side, technologies like AI and drones can drastically improve the productivity of workers and artists to perform their craft, benefiting us all. But there is a dark side as well: extremists are early adopters of new technologies that afford them the ability to maximize their evil objectives. With so much change in the world, how can we grapple with this new era of asymmetry?Joining host Danny Crichton and Riskgaming director of programming Laurence Pevsner is Colin P. Clarke, the director of research at The Soufan Group and formerly a long-time terrorism analyst at RAND. He has spent years studying terrorist organizations and their thirst for new technologies and new means of financing their activities. His new book on Evgeny Prigozhin and the rise of The Wagner Group will be out later this year. The three talk about how new technologies are changing the threat landscape from terrorism, the changing contours of the so-called crime-terror nexus, why China is increasingly the focus of analysis, and how governments are responding to the increasing leverage of terrorists throughout the world.
The Russian police are increasingly under pressure. The National Guard is getting into the mercenary game. There is talk (probably empty) of Wagner being reconstituted under Evgeny Prigozhin's son Pavel. These three apparently separate developments all point to the way Putin is not learning the lessons of past mistakes. In the second segment, another profile of a potential successor to Putin: the fixer-technocrat with the 'Cheshire Cat' smile, Dmitri Kozak. The podcast's corporate partner and sponsor is Conducttr, which provides software for innovative and immersive crisis exercises in hybrid warfare, counter-terrorism, civil affairs and similar situations. You can also follow my blog, In Moscow's Shadows, and become one of the podcast's supporting Patrons and gain question-asking rights and access to exclusive extra materials right here. For this show, and our next show, we will continue to honor the life of Randall Robinson, international human rights activist and leader in the movement to bring down the brutal, racist system of apartheid in South Africa. This is the second of three parts, with more speakers, including Rep. Barbara Lee of California, speaking at the Washington, DC memorial held for Robinson in June of this year. Plus headlines: Japan dumps wastewater from the Fukushima nuclear plant into the Pacific Ocean. 1100 remain missing after Maui wildfires as many bodies recovered crumble and are ash. Argentina, Egypt, Iran, Ethiopia, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia are newest members of the BRICS economic group. News organizations in Africa speculated about the impact on countries including Mali and Burkina Faso after of the apparent death of Evgeny Prigozhin, head of the Russian mercenary Wagner Group, which aided those countries in battles against violent militia groups. The NLRB passes rules to help union elections happen faster. Trump hawks his mugshot on a t-shirt. Gli investigatori russi hanno confermato la morte del pilota dell'aereo che si è schiantato l'altroieri sul quale presumibilmente viaggiava il capo della Wagner, Evgeny Prigozhin. Lo scrive il Guardian citando una fonte informata.
After his botched coup attempt earlier this year, longtime Putin ally Evgeny Prigozhin is believed to be dead after a plane crash. Plus: New home office figures show the backlog of asylum applications has hit a record high; and Labour party membership has fallen again. With Michael Walker and Aaron Bastani.
This hasn't been the greatest week for Russia President, Vladimir Putin in two decades of power in the Kremlin. A mutinous band of mercenaries, that he himself created, charged up towards Moscow, denouncing his war in Ukraine and seemingly meeting little resistance on the way. While he faced down Evgeny Prigozhin and the Wagner group, appearing to banish them to Belarus, it's not all over for Putin. In this episode, Hubertus Jahn, professor of the history of Russia and the Caucasus at Cambridge University, explains how the “mafia boss” in the Kremlin has seen cracks forming in his enterprise - and explores what might be next for Russia and its leader.

Amid an escalating public conflict between Russia's Defense Ministry and Evgeny Prigozhin, The Naked Pravda builds on last year's episode about the warlord-tycoon, looking more closely at the paramilitary cartel he fronts. To understand how Wagner Group should be defined, why its brutality is so valuable to Moscow, and how its recruitment of prisoners has played out, Meduza spoke to three experts. Timestamps for this episode: (3:55) Candace Rondeaux (a professor of practice and fellow at the Melikian Center for Russian, Eurasian, and East European Studies and the Center on the Future of War at Arizona State University, and the director of Future Frontlines at New America) explains how Wagner Group is best defined. (5:50) Andreas Heinemann-Grüder (who teaches Political Science at the University of Bonn in Germany and is a senior researcher at the Bonn International Center for Conflict Studies) break down how Russia's mercenaries practice “exterminatory warfare.” (7:38) Bellingcat training-and-research director Aric Toler talks about Wagner Group's promises of pardons and burials with honors. (10:07) Andreas Heinemann-Grüder says Wagner's recruitment of prisoners undermined the group's internal cohesion and “didn't work out” in the end. (14:21) Why does Moscow need Wagner Group at all in the middle of an invasion openly waged by Russia's official military? (17:41) Candace Rondeaux explains the difference between designations for organized crime and terrorism, from a foreign policy perspective. (22:27) Wagner Group as a front for Russian state corporations' interests abroad. (24:21) Aric Toler examines what funerals for three 1990s-era crime bosses recruited by Wagner say about the group's dubious promises to inmates. (28:14) Candace Rondeaux highlights the ways in which Wagner Group is a social movement too. (31:50) How to read Prigozhin-linked channels online and Russia's Z-blogosphere more broadly. (37:10) Why ending the war demands a resolution to Wagner Group's fate.
The apparent hit on a Russian rightist, propagandist, and self-styled "swindler and mercenary" raises a range of questions about coordination in the Russian forces, the role of Evgeny Prigozhin and Russia's slide back towards the 'wild 90s.' Still, that's a better prospect than Putin's repeated invocation of the 1940s, most recently at the 80th anniversary of the battle of Stalingrad... What does it mean that Western-designed tanks will now be supplied to Ukraine, and what - if any - potential responses does Putin have? At the very least, it will be used to hammer home the new notion of the 'New Patriotic War,' in an attempt to provide a rationalisation for totalitarianism. However, any unity imposed is just superficial - as the recent spat between Igor 'Strelkov' Girkin and Evgeny Prigozhin illustrates, there are growing divisions within the system. The Tsargrad article on Dugin I mentioned is here, the Izvestia one on Petr Pavel is here. You can also follow my blog, In Moscow's Shadows, and become one of the podcast's supporting Patrons and gain question-asking rights and access to exclusive extra materials right here. Save Meduza!https://support.meduza.io/enA couple of months ago, videos from Russian prisons started appearing online showing a beefy-looking, bald man addressing large crowds of inmates, trying to recruit them as mercenaries to go fight (and quite possibly die, he admitted) in Ukraine. “Do you have anybody who can pull you out of the slammer when you've still got 10 years on your sentence? There are two who can get you out: Allah and God, and it will be in a wooden box. I'll take you alive, though I won't always return you that way.” He then gives the prisoners five minutes to decide if they'll join his private military company. The man speaking here is Evgeny Prigozhin, an ex-con himself and now a jack of all trades when it comes to the dark side of the Russian elite. He's known as Vladimir Putin's favorite chef, a restauranteur from St. Petersburg who caters for the president and supplies food to the military and many public schools. He operates so-called “troll farms” and an empire of fake news outlets that he now openly admits were created to meddle in politics, particularly in the United States. Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine (not just this February but all the way back to the start in 2014), Prigozhin's most important dirty work for the Kremlin has been through his mercenary group Wagner. For a better understanding of Evgeny Prigozhin's current significance as a public figure in Russia, The Naked Pravda spoke to five journalists and experts. Timestamps for this episode: (3:40) Alexandra Prokopenko (11:58) Roman Badanin (18:24) John Lechner (33:50) Roman Dobrokhotov (42:37) Liza Fokht
Catering tycoon Evgeny Prigozhin has filed a complaint with prosecutors against Irina Levontina, a forensic linguistics expert who works for the Russian Language Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Levontina served as an expert witness in two defamation lawsuits that Prigozhin filed against journalists. According to Novaya Gazeta, the Kremlin-linked oligarch is accusing Levontina of "misconduct" because she included the Russian Language Institute's official seal on paperwork submitted to the courts as expert evidence. Levontina believes that the complaints are an attempt to have her opinions, which don't support Prigozhin's claims in either case, thrown out. Russian authorities have reportedly launched another criminal case against opposition figure and Navalny associate Lyubov Sobol on the application of Kremlin-linked oligarch Evgeny Prigozhin. In this new episode of Trouble with the Truth, Lana speaks to a senior investigator from the Sentry about the Central African Republic- one of the most dangerous countries in the world. They discuss a recent Sentry report that exposes the links between a major French sugar refinery and local militias implicated in massacres and human rights violations. They also touch on the infamous Wagner group – a secretive Russian military contractor that's linked to Putin ally Evgeny Prigozhin. The Wagner group has been accused of committing shocking crimes against civilians in CAR although officially, the military company is not registered anywhere. This episode doesn't reveal the face of the speaker in order to protect their identity.
According to Meduza's sources, Russian oligarch Evgeny Prigozhin has bankrolled another made-for-TV movie about mercenaries from the Wagner group. The film is scheduled to premiere on August 18, on the pro-Kremlin channel NTV - the same television network that released a Prigozhin-backed action movie about Russian fighters in the Central African Republic earlier this year. Titled "Solntsepyok" ("Blazing Sun"), this new flick is set in eastern Ukraine in 2014 and allegedly "based on real events." Publications linked to Prigozhin were the first to announce the film's release. One source who worked on another movie sponsored by Prigozhin described this latest project as an attempt to put forward a "romanticized propaganda version" of the mercenary group and thereby launder Wagner's image. Original Article: https://meduza.io/en/feature/2021/08/13/a-lugansk-chainsaw-massacre
Russian oligarch Evgeny Prigozhin filing a lawsuit against Meduza has given us access to notarized copies of old court rulings involving him. We acknowledge the error in our 2016 article (which did contain an incorrect assertion pertaining to Prigozhin's criminal record) and wish to correct it without making any claims about Prigozhin's honor, dignity, or professional reputation. As such, we're publishing a complete translation of the cassation court's ruling on Prigozhin's appeal against a verdict sentencing him to 13 years in a medium-security penal colony. This took place in 1981.
Today's guest is Jack Stubbs, the European cybersecurity correspondent at the news agency Reuters and previously a correspondent in Russia and Ukraine. About a week ago, on October 1, 2020, Jack authored an exclusive story at Reuters, titled “Russian Operation Masqueraded as Right-Wing News Site to Target U.S. Voters,” about people connected to the infamous Internet Research Agency — that troll factory founded by Evgeny Prigozhin — running a fake news outlet designed to target right-wing voters with inflammatory political messaging ahead of this year's U.S. presidential election. According to sources familiar with an FBI probe, this is the right-wing version of a nearly identical project that targeted American leftists called Peace Data.
