This week, we're exploring a topic that's on the minds of a lot of travelers these days: short-term tourist rentals, which is a service offered by a lot of companies, but perhaps the most well known is Airbnb. First up, Dr. Daniel Guttentag of the College of Charleston joins the show to explain why short-term rentals hold so much appeal, and to tell us how these kinds of services have evolved over the years. He also describes some of the impacts of short-term rentals and offers some advice for travelers who are looking to have a positive impact when they book a rental stay. Next, Paige speaks to Jonathan Reyes, co-founder of a cooperative called Fairbnb that is taking a collaborative approach to offering rented tourist accommodation in popular destinations in Europe and beyond.

A beluga whale that was freed from a mysterious harness by Norwegian fishermen and fishery officials off the coast of northern Norway last week is in no hurry to leave the Norwegian waters. On Thursday morning it swam up to the Hammerfest harbour much to the surprise and the delight of Jorgen Ree Wiig, who had taken part in its rescue. (Jorgen Ree Wiig/Norwegian Directorate of Fisheries) It's a mystery. Norwegian fishermen discovered an unusually friendly lone beluga while out fishing. Beluga are relatively rare in the area, tend to stick to pods, and away from humans. This one was just the opposite, and in addition had a strange harness, which obviously had been carrying something. Could it have been a trained whale carrying spy equipment? Was it the Russians from their nearby bases in Murmansk or Americans spying on the Russian bases? FAIR BNB TAKES ON AIRBNB IN TORONTO OVER ABUSES OF SHORT-TERM ACOMMODATION Fairbnb is a national coalition of organizations focused on establishing fair regulations for short-term rentals. Thorben Wieditz, above, is a spokesperson for the group. (Yanjun Li/CBC News) San Francisco, where Airbnb got its start, successfully sued the accommodation-sharing app, and after reaching a settlement, implemented what's described as the best "regulatory framework" against the widespread abuses by Airbnb and other short-term rental accommodation platforms. In Toronto, City Council acted and brought in rules and regulations to deal with some of the many abuses in Canada's largest city, but the changes are currently being challenged in court. There's a lot of money behind some of the not so legal arrangements that have grown out of the "home-sharing" apps. Thorben Wieditz is a spokesperson for Fairbnb, a coalition of groups wanting greater transparency as well as rules and regulations about how these apps are allowed to work. FAIR BNB has been at work in Toronto since 2016, when it became apparent how out of control the situation had gotten. The city had become a major centre for what's known as "Ghost Hotels". Carmel Kilkenny spoke with Thorben Wieditz earlier this week, and he explained to me how these Ghost Hotels developed. HOT HOUSE EARTH: SCIENTISTS WARN AGAIN ABOUT GLOBAL WARMING Climate change could turn hearth into a ‘hothouse,’ says scientists A recent report by an international team of scientists looked at several of the earth's natural systems and determined that if carbon emissions go unchecked there could be a domino effect or chain reaction among them that increase global temperatures by 4 to 5 degrees. And that would change the word dramatically making large parts uninhabitable. Lynn Desjardins spoke with the co-author of the report Prof. Katherine Richardson of the University of Copenhagen.
