Happy Halloween!! Spooky Season 2023 has ended… which means Spooky Season 2024 is officially underway, and David and Devin are celebrating with two classic ghost stories: THE INNOCENTS (1961), directed by Jack Clayton, and THE HAUNTING (1963), directed by Robert Wise. Adapting two famous works of literature (Henry James' The Turning of the Screw and Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House, respectively), the black-and-white films have their female protagonists arrive at gorgeous old Victorian manors… and encounter ghosts? We have much to talk about: from queer-coding, to second-wave feminism, to ambiguous endings, to the very definition of Gothic horror. So turn out the lights and burn some candles as we ask the question: What is a ghost? 00:05:51 - The Innocents 00:36:03 - The Haunting 01:05:04 - Comparisons 01:28:08 - Bone Reviews Follow us at: instagram.com/cadaverdogspod twitter.com/cadaverdogspod . Hailing from the Scottish Highlands, but currently based in Leeds/Glasgow, Josephine Sillars is a pop musician inspired by art-pop and trip-hop, drawing comparisons to Fiona Apple and Bjork. Her new releases see her confidently experimenting with new styles and deeply personal subject matters. Her 2021 EP “Desperate Characters”, funded by Help Musicians, was described as “compelling and expansive” (Tenement TV) and as “hands down one of the finest Scottish releases of 2021” (Small Music Scene), with lead single “Enemy” selected as Track of the Week for BBC Introducing in West Yorkshire and as 71 out of 100 Top Tunes in Scotland 2021 (The Herald). She released her debut vinyl "Spend Time Wasting" via Leeds label Come Play With Me in November 2022, a 7" split with Fuzz Lightyear. "Spend Time Wasting" was featured as a Track of the Week for God Is In the TV, and described as "dreamy and immersive" by Tenement TV with features in DORK, Lock Magazine and the UK Official Charts. From March - June 2023, Josephine was the Artist in Residence at record store and venue, Vinyl Whistle in Leeds, curating nights showcasing alt-pop music from Leeds and Yorkshire called POP TRASH. This year she will release her new EP, "The Loveliest Things Change", with first single "That Boy" due for release on 20th July.

Lee is back with part one of a two-part look at the soundtracks and scores of sex comedies, specifically those of the 1970s and 1980s, the raunchier the better! There was so much material to go through that he had to split each decade into its own super-sized episode of BotT, and even then he's barely scraping the surface. In part one we start off in the decade where the sex comedy really started to take off overseas at first: the 1970s! This was especially obvious in places like Great Britain and Italy, and this trend would seemingly influence North American sex comedies to push the envelope even further later in the decade, before they totally came to dominate in the 1980s. --Up Pompeii from "Up Pompeii" (1970) --Frankie Howerd --God's Children & Lola from "Percy" (1971) --The Kinks --Au Pair Girls 2 from "Au Pair Girls" (1972) --Roger Webb --Sessomatto from "How Funny Can Sex Be" (1973) --Armando Trovajoli --Alvin Purple from "Alvin Purple" (1973) --Brian Cadd --Lovin' Is from "Alice Goodbody" (1974) --Rick Harris, Candy & Mr. D --This is Your Life Timmy Lea from "Confessions of a Window Cleaner" (1974) --Su Cheyenne --Girl from Starship Venus from "The Girl from Starship Venus" (1975) --Don Lang --Confessions of Timmy Lee from "Confessions of a Pop Performer" (1975) --Three's a Crowd --Kipper; Accidents Will Happen; Oh Sha La La & The Clapham from "Confessions of a Pop Performer" (1975) --Kipper (Dominic Bugatti & Frank Musker) --Theme from "The Ups and Downs of a Handyman" (1975) --Vic Elms (vocals by Barry Stokes) --Sq. 1 - Titoli & Seq. 3 from "The Sensuous Nurse" (1975) --Gianfranco Plenizio --My Cruisin' Casanova from "Adventures of a Taxi Driver" (1976) --Adrienne Posta --The Love Bug from "What's Up Nurse!" Soooo, the chat with the tree went well. Still not 100% sure on pronouns, but the screaming agony of the ages was fun, right? Anyway, the group heads out to speak with Wiseman, having puzzled over the contents of Nero's visions, and the potential intersections with Dent's mysterious dreams. They speak with Wiseman about how to get home, and why it might work. And at this point, the Dice 100% validate some amazing play by Elyse. Also, does anyone hear creepy music? Want a date? But with whom? What are the ideals and standards of perfection that men hold women to in modern society? The Cadaver Dogs are pulling back the curtains on the unrealistic expectations we hold in relationships, and the destructive – sometimes explosive – consequences. There have been many interpretations of Takashi Miike's AUDITION (1999) over the years, and oh boy do we have thoughts! On the total opposite of the spectrum lies FRANKENHOOKER (1990), the title and plot of which writer-director Frank Henenlotter improvised during a pitch meeting. But the Dogs will also seek to answer: Are these movies truly sexist, or are they secretly feminist? Or neither? Get your test tubes, beakers, and radioactive chemicals ready, because this week we're talking about ‘30s and ‘50s science-fiction! Einstein had only just published his theory of relativity, the atom was in the process of being split, and outer space had yet to be explored. Science was scary then, for it was unknown what dangers we'd uncover. Even looking back now, the question remains: Did we make a mistake? Should we continue to venture into infinity, or else when does science go too far? In Vincent Price-starring THE TINGLER (1959), directed by the master of gimmicks William Castle, a coroner dares to push ethical boundaries as he uncovers a spine-crushing bug that lives inside all of us and feeds on our fear. Then the Dogs jumps back to Frankenstein director James Whale's THE INVISIBLE MAN (1933) -- the one with Claude Rains (no offense to Elisabeth Moss) -- where an insane physicist wields his newfound superpower to terrorize humanity in a maddening crime spree of havoc. Lucy from Dead Naked Hippies joined us to talk about the support that the band have received. Dead Naked Hippies are alt-rock outsiders. The trio, fronted by force-of-nature front woman Lucy Jowett, will lull you in with subtlety before taking your head off with their wall of sound. They are a force to be reckoned with live with huge guitars, booming drums and Jowett's banshee-like approach hitting hard, with freneticism and attitude to boot. In this episode, we discussed Help Musicians ‘Do It Differently' fund, as well as support from Come Play With Me and Launchpad. Lucy spoke really honestly about resilience, learning curves and recognising and appreciating the hard work required to be an independent artist. Grady Harrell was born and raised in Los Angeles Ca. and started singing at the tender age of 8. He was greatly influenced by Smokey Robinson and taught himself to sing with a portable record player that his Mom bought him. Trying hard to emulate Smokey, he learned all the Miracles songs. He started singing in his neighborhood to anyone who would listen. At 12 years old he started his own singing group with 2 other guys from his block and named the group The Young Gents. They did talent shows and parties for a while, then added his sister Rocquel to the line up and changed their name to Papa's Results.Papa's Results began playing all the clubs in the L.A. area such as Mavericks Flats, The Total Experience, The Apartment and many more. Sharing the stage with such groups as the Whispers, Lakeside, Richard Pryor, Chaka Khan and many more. Papa's Results stayed together as a group for 6 years, even being managed briefly by the Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin and her sister Carolyn. After Rocquel got an offer to tour with Diana Ross Grady went solo. He signed with Dick Griffey's Solar Records label and put out his first Album, MWANA. It had little success with the regional hit Belinda as the first single. In 1987 he left Solar and signed with RCA records and released his second Album, Come Play With Me. The single Sticks and Stones went all the way to #4 on the R&B charts. His second Album for RCA was Romance Me which had limited success due to poor promotions. In 1992 Jermaine Jackson chose Grady to play the part in the hit made for TV mini series, The Jacksons, An American Dream, As Soul singer Jackie Wilson. The series was nominated for an Emmy award. These days you can find Grady Harrell touring with his band and recording new music. You can find out more about Grady Harrell at his website located here: http://www.gradyharrell.com/

What would you do if one of the Good People came knocking on your door?Would you answer?Or would you hide behind the curtains? Our relationship with the Good People has been one of twists and turns. Ups and downs. There is a theory, long held by many, that the Good People occasionally reproduce with humans. There may be several reasons for this. Some faerie may enjoy the act of seduction, for some it might be a novelty, a boredom-buster, or perhaps it’s based on a genuine attraction, but some believe the good people need to reproduce with humans from time to time to keep their own bloodlines strong. Perhaps there are particular races of Faerie which do benefit from the occasional shot of human genetic material. And today we’re going to look at the nuts and bolts of this. Not the beginning of the process, but rather the end. A Faerie giving birth to a child who is half human.Did you know that Faerie giving birth to a human/faerie child requires a Human midwife or wise-woman to attend her during birth? There are many women who have attended a Faerie during childbirth and returned to tell the tale. Some of these Faerie midwives benefit from their service, while many others wish they had never answered that knock at the door…*Fancy buying me a coffee? If you enjoy Encounters with the Good People and would like to give me a hand to continue in this work, please consider buying me a ‘coffee’ (I prefer tea actually...).This is a really quick, simple and safe way for you to donate and support my work. In Matthew’s account of the parable of the sower, Jesus demonstrates the meaning of three critical Matthean teachings: 1) “Seek and ye shall find,” 2) “The eye is the lamp of the body,” and 3) “Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit shall not be forgiven.” The last warning baffles modern Christians for whom religion is a pursuit of happiness vis-à-vis emotional and psychological consolation. Matthew’s Gospel dynamites this illusion in it’s proclamation and application of Isaiah, where the showdown between God and his people makes it very clear that some sins are definitely unforgivable. Richard and Fr. Marc discuss Matthew 13:14-16. One relatively modern fear many people share, is fear of dolls. Throughout history there have been a number of children's toys that are purported to be haunted by evil spirits. In this episode I tell you about a few of these terrifying dolls, including the story of the real Annabelle, and probably the most famous haunted doll of them all, Robert. Smashtoberfest '17 comes to an explosive end in the second of our episodes that could realistically be titled "#YesAllDraculas!" The Count Dracula from Bram Stoker's most famous work has been killed, leaving a dangerous instability in the Dracuverse. The position of Dracula Prime must be filled, and several alternatives arrive. One Dracula! Two Draculas! Three Draculas! FOUR DRACULAS! Ah ah ah! Which lord of vampires will defeat his opponents and ascend to the rightful ruler of Transylvania? Will Castlevania's Dracula develop a strategy beyond teleporting and throwing fireballs? Can Marvel's Dracula use spacecraft, death rays, and the Internet to eliminate the competition? How will the movie Van Helsing's Dracula leverage his swarm of gross, flying rat-babies? And what in the name of Lion Jesus is Dracula: Dead and Loving It's Dracula doing here?! Once again, thanks to Kevin MacCleod for use of his songs "Come Play With Me" and "Digital Bark."
In the third installment of Smashtoberfest 2017, a certain ragged group of zombie apocalypse survivors hanging out in Georgia have officially seen just about all they care to see of the walking dead, especially now that winter is coming, and with it, rumors of some new kind of "ice zombies." Fortunately, they've received intelligence that somewhere in the frozen north, in a place that may or may not be Canada, lies a hidden cache of weapons, primarily swords and knives, made from a metal that could turn the tide in the group's quest for survival. If there are more deposits of this "Valyrian steel" in the area, it might even be worth moving up there, despite the cold of the season. But Rick and the gang aren't completely stupid. Before anyone starts packing, they need someone to drive up there, scout the area, find the metal, and figure out if it's as effective as the rumors say. Of course, there will be walkers everywhere. As it turns out, more than one kind. For a mission this dangerous, there's only one logical choice: Michonne, the katana-wielding uber-badass who slices through entire hordes like it's nothing. But is she prepared for what waits for her beyond the...Canadian border? Or will she fall to the mysterious species of ice-themed monstrosities known throughout Westeros as the white walkers...before rising again, with blue eyes? Special guest hosts Jaime Smith and Money from the Unspoiled! Podcast Network join us for the first time this week, and quickly learn that when you play the game of Smash Fiction, you win, or you complain loudly about the judge's decision until the end of time. There is no zombie-infested middle ground. Once again, thanks to Kevin MacCleod for use of his songs "Come Play With Me" and "Digital Bark."

Jinkies, gang! Some really strange stuff has been happening over at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. Apparently the lovable animatronic animals have been walking around on their own, appearing suddenly in doorways while the Toreador March plays, and scaring the shit out of people before horribly murdering them. Looks like we've got a mystery on our hands! Fred, Daphne, Velma, Shaggy, and Scooby-Doo are determined to figure out what, exactly, is going on inside Freddy's, and they'll have five nights to do so using security cameras, an unreliable electrical system, and of course, the power of friendship. But Freddy, Bonnie, Chica and Foxy aren't exactly harmless children's entertainers. Can the Scooby Gang pull the mask off this mystery, no doubt revealing it the be the mundane scheme of a local elderly person? Or will Freddy and his friends put a premature end to the gang's investigative career...and start training them in their new jobs as corpses slowly rotting inside robotic animal suits? Once again, thanks to Kevin MacCleod for use of his songs "Come Play With Me" and "Digital Bark."
Smashtoberfest is upon us once again, and we're kicking things off with a contest between two Stephen King villains -- specifically, two Stephen King villains who were brought to life by transcendent film portrayals! The Shining's Jack Torrance, fresh off his recent stint of axe redrum fueled by writer's block and hotel ghosts, is freezing to death in the snow when he is miraculously rescued by one of his biggest fans, serial killer Annie Wilkes of Misery! With his legs crippled from frostbite and a psychopath demanding he write her a novel without the use of the letter N, can Jack find a way to escape Annie's cabin and live to drink again with dead people? Or will Annie break his spirit (along with his ankles) and dispatch him before he sees the first printing of his brand new, curse-word-free book? Also, we somehow manage to make an episode that seems to be legitimately scaring Liz Logan, but that simultaneously contains all the Treehouse of Horror references. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. Special thanks to Kevin MacLeod for his songs "Come Play With Me" and "Digital Bark." Check out more of his work at www.incompetech.com
I had such a good time talking with Patrick and Pete from Patrick and the Rock-a-Silly Band. It was so fun to hear about their music making and the fun that they have together. I think you’ll get a major kick out of our banter. If you stay tuned all the way to the end of the show you’ll not only get a pizza recommendation in Staten Island, but you’ll also hear the Rock-a-Silly Band song ‘Come Play With Me’.
