This video honors Dr. Mark Corkins, Division Chief of Pediatric Gastroenterology at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center and Le Bonheur Children's Hospital. In medical school, his biochemistry professor said that students didn't get enough nutrition and was given an hour each week to teach it. He later found out this focus on nutrition was not the norm in medical training. Dr. Corkins works as an academic physician and loves to teach nutrition. He says there are still huge holes in nutrition knowledge, despite significant progress in recent years. There are still lots of questions that need answers. He advises junior faculty to pick one question and answer it well—do it right, and more questions will follow. He also shares how ASPEN has helped him advance and grow professionally. This video honors Dr. Lillian Harvey Banchik, volunteer surgeon for the Medical Reserve Corp in San Diego, CA and past president of the National Board for Nutrition Support Certification (NBNSC). Dr. Banchik talks about the evolution of nutrition and its vital impact on patient recovery. She feels there is a lack of respect for nutrition as a specialty, which she believes is caused by a lack of nutrition education for physicians. She shares her personal story on how forcing herself to eat the right foods allowed her to successfully get through chemo and radiation for cancer without missing a day of work. Dr. Banchik also provides advice for junior faculty members. This video honors Paul Wischmeyer, MD, EDIC, FCCM, FASPEN, Professor of Anesthesiology and Surgery, in the division of Critical Care Medicine at Duke University in Durham, NC. Dr. Wischmeyer's nutrition journey began in high school when he was diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease and was on parenteral nutrition for a year. Many of the medicine he was given had severe side effects. It motivated him to get into medicine and do research on alternative treatments. Dr. Wischmeyer's first grant was from the ASPEN Rhoads Research Foundation; it set him up for his NIH K Award. Dr. Wischmeyer provides tips for finding mentors in clinical nutrition, talks about an online nutrition fellowship at Duke, and shares what he thinks are the pressing questions in clinical nutrition. This Spotlight honors David S. Seres, MD, ScM, PNS, FASPEN, director of the Medical Nutrition Program and associate professor of medicine in the Institute of Human Nutrition at Columbia University Medical Center in New York City. He has over 30 years of experience in nutrition support consulting, clinical research, and teaching. He's currently the section editor for nutrition at UpToDate. Dr. Seres shares his thoughts on how the field of nutrition has changed, and not changed (lack of randomized control trial data), and what's to come (personalized nutrition). He leads one of the few nutrition fellowship programs and points out that in the ICU, patients on average receive only 45% of the calories prescribed to them. He believes that ASPEN is an excellent way for young physicians to develop relationships, find mentors, develop their own credibility and have the opportunity to critically discuss the nutrition research to help further advance the field. This Spotlight honors Jack Pasquale, MD, FASPEN, medical director of clinical nutrition services at NY Presbyterian Queens and Fresh Meadows Queens, and Associate professor at St. George's University of Medicine. He also has a private practice. After taking two nutrition electives — one taught by Dr. Maurice Shils, the other by Drs. Bruce Bistrian and George Blackburn — Dr Pasquale's interest in nutrition was sealed. He had a nutrition fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania where he met Drs. Stanley Dudrick and Jonathon Rhoads. He says he knows more about medicine through nutrition because nutrition does not have an organ; it's nutrition and the heart, nutrition and the brain, etc. Dr. Pasquale shares his thoughts on how the field of nutrition has changed and how ASPEN helps him keep up with the changes. This Spotlight honors ASPEN's 42 president, Nilesh Mehta, MD, FASPEN, anesthesia professor and critical care nutrition & metabolism chair at Harvard Medical School in Boston, MA. During his early years of practice, Dr. Mehta realized there was very little evidence-based guidelines to drive nutrient delivery to sick children at the bedside. Depending on the team, the child was fed differently and the fundamental question of how much food/calories to deliver was unanswered. This began his journey into research. Dr. Mehta stresses that nutrition in the ICU is a team effort and that bedside nurses are his partners, the drivers of change. He shares how ASPEN has all the things he needed—interdisciplinary teams, mentors, and collaboration —and how a call to ASPEN got him started working on guidelines.
