Key Things Discussed: Where ESG and CSR overlap in their mandates to develop better corporate citizens. The UN's 17 Goals for Sustainable Development and how that's going. The challenges associated with creating reliable, long-term metrics by which to track individual company efforts to reach carbon neutrality. The difference between – and examples of – carbon offsetting and insetting. Innovative technologies Guenter is involved with and what's on his horizon. The episode wraps with some lively Quick Fire Questions that will leave you inspired to join Guenter in driving hard towards creating the environmental solutions we need! Show Notes [02:20] Guenter brings us up to speed on his career trajectory, from academia (where he acquired advanced mathematical and analytical skills) to the Boston Consulting Group, where he was introduced to a steep learning curve across industry sectors. [03:25] Defining the E, S and G of ESG, a framework for supporting Environmental, Social and Governance measures for corporate responsibility: Provides a common language to discuss non-financial indicators and parameters. Connects corporate impacts in a global context. [06:50] While there is overlap, ESG and CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) are not completely interchangeable. CSR has traditionally been a somewhat vague, even random, corporate commitment to philanthropy, community engagement, stockholder expectations and compliance/risk mitigation. ESG is the framework or vehicle through which to measure and quantify social impacts beyond financial metrics, the boardroom or day-to-day business. [10:28] Guenter places ESG within the context of 17 Sustainable Development Goals defined by the UN, including challenges such as hunger, poverty, health, economic development. [13:00] Does ESG impact the bottom line? Guenter argues yes and that evidence suggests that environmental and social elements in particular pay off in terms of both overall corporate and global health. [16:26] Challenges and Concerns: What metrics can be put in place based on hard indicators such as CO2 emissions developed based on sector-relevant resources and practices. Large accounting firms and regulatory control will also have a role to play. [18:42] Affordability, especially for small- and medium-sized businesses, will be determined in large part by scaling of technology and automation in the coming years.  [19:44] Impact measures and the fuzziness around defining them because of a lack of longitudinal tracking measures and the murkiness of long-term timelines.  [22:17] Guenter's thoughts about developing corporate solutions and plans for capturing impact measures in terms of political and scientific indicators: Using a flexible framework for collecting data. Implementing pro bono efforts to help environmental nonprofits. [26:25] Guenter explains the difference between carbon offset and inset: Buy your way out versus build your way out? It's nuanced! [30:07] Guenter gets granular with specific examples of offsetting methods, relative levels of impact available through programs in place today as well as innovative new technologies under development to scale efforts to stabilize and sequester carbon. [33:04] Guenter shares projects he's excited about with Sinkco Labs, which is developing a carbon-neutral alternative protein source, as well as a new app in beta testing that will offer consumers a simple way to get an ongoing read of their carbon footprint based on travel, dining out and other lifestyle patterns. [38:54] Quick Fire Questions for Guenter: What Is Your Dream With A Deadline?  Helping all sectors – but most especially the corporate world – realize their pledges to be profitable as well as socially and environmentally responsible. What do you appreciate about the teams you work with? The passion for common goals, excellence and pursuing a mission to make a difference. What challenge have you overcome and how did you do it? By pivoting in the right way at the right point in time. It's about stepping back to reassess, even if it means shifting your direction or strategy. Advice for effective team-wide and company-wide goalsetting? Focus on creating a shared vision that excites and enfranchises all stakeholders, which will lead to high levels of buy-in, satisfaction and success across the enterprise. What's top of mind for you these days? Moving forward with projects in progress in order to grow, grow, grow, scale, scale, scale and meet our global challenge Relevant links: The UN's 17 Sustainable Development Goals. This interview with mental health champion Chad Guenter begins with a light-hearted discussion of standup paddle boarding on rivers and rapids and includes his takeaways from many years as a whitewater guide. And then, as if entering class V rapids, the intensity changes. Being most at home on the water, Chad is not afraid to go deep, and in this episode, we descend into the abyss of mental illness. Paddling has been an integral part of Chad's life and personal healing, and to help support loved ones struggling with mental health, he started using his paddle board as a springboard to raise awareness. But Chad is not just standing up for those close to him; he incessantly fights for the well-being of anyone facing mental health challenges. Through his initiatives known as Keep Calm/Paddle On and Project All In, and in his role as a firefighter, Chad has dedicated his life to helping others both in the physical and mental/emotional realms. He is literally saving and improving the lives of people throughout Canada, and the impact of Project All in has cascaded around the globe. I know and have interviewed many amazing and driven individuals, and Chad has quickly risen to the upper ranks of that list. His dedication to his selfless path of service to others is awe-inspiring, and his unabashed vulnerability touched me in a way that very few interactions have. Even with his enormous physical stature, I have found that it is his heart that is the ultimate titan. With Chad standing up against the stigmatization of mental illness, dismantled barriers are being left in his wake. Be prepared to fall in love with this guy and feel the embrace of his compassion. The two simultaneous live lecture streams were viewed by people in 24 countries. Over the coming weeks, the RSGB will release the individual presentations via its YouTube channel, so you can catch up on any you missed. In the meantime, you can see a video that shows just how much work the technical team were doing in the background to make the streams go smoothly. That video is at www.rsgb.org/convention and you can find all of the RSGB YouTube videos via www.youtube.com/theRSGB. We recently announced that the Bath Distance Learning Team was resuming its work. There are still a very few places available on the Intermediate course that will run from November this year to March 2021. To open availability as widely as possible the deadline for applications has been extended until this Friday, the 23rd of October. Students receive weekly work packages via a virtual classroom and have access to weekly tutorials and revision quizzes. They also have a remote tutor who provides feedback and additional guidance when required. The course is free, though a refundable £30 deposit is required to secure a place. For full details, and an application form, contact the team leader Steve, G0FUW, via email to g0fuw@tiscali.co.uk. This is a great opportunity for Foundation holders to upgrade their knowledge and licence. All Notices of Variation for the temporary 146 to 147MHz band expire on the 31st of October. Ofcom have agreed to make the frequencies available for a further year. To take advantage of this band, you will need to apply online for a new Notice of Variation even if you have held one before. Go to www.rsgb.org/nov and select the 146 and 147MHz NoV link. The NoV is issued free and is available to all UK Full licence holders. As a reminder, the band is intended for technical and experimental work. It should not be used for modes or operations that normally take place in the 144 to 146MHz band. The IARU Region 1 Virtual General Conference concluded on Friday. The plenary saw numerous recommendations across a wide range of General, HF, VHF, UHF, microwave and EMC matters, including Youth and Spectrum issues. The RSGB was a leading contributor and was pleased with the success of its proposals. Barry Lewis, G4SJH was elected as the new Chair for IARU Region 1 Spectrum Affairs, succeeding David Court, EI3IO. Overall, the online format enabled a great team effort across all our volunteers. A fuller report will be available in due course via the IARU Region 1 website. The British Amateur Television Club is holding its virtual Convention next Saturday, the 24th of October. Known as CAT 20, proceedings start at 10 am and will incorporate a series of talks. These will include details of the hugely popular BATC Portsdown digital ATV transmitter and its accompanying receiver, the Ryde. Whether you are a beginner or seasoned ATVer there will be something for everyone in this fascinating exciting part of the hobby. You can watch the action free via the live stream at https://batc.org.uk/live/cat20 The UNESCO International Day of Persons with Disabilities takes place on the 3rd of December. The co-ordinator is Thomas, HB9FXU and further information will appear at www.iaru-r1.org/about-us/committees-and-working-groups/ipha/  The RSGB will once again be participating in the annual YOTA Month activities in December. Normally we would encourage large youth groups, schools, Scouting associations and amateur radio clubs to participate. However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we will not be encouraging large group events. We do hope that smaller groups will be able to participate in the event, whilst remaining within national and local guidelines. GB20YOTA will be available for Full licence holders to book an appointment slot within a set calendar. This calendar will be available on the GB20YOTA QRZ.com page for you to choose when you want to operate. All operations should be focused with the intention to get young people on the air. Now the contest news Please remember to check before the contest for new rules due to lockdown and social distancing, which may differ around the world. The RSGB strongly advises obeying your own national and local government’s advice first and foremost, especially in the instance of local lockdowns. The Worked All Germany contest ends its 24-hour run at 1500UTC today, Sunday. Using CW and SSB on the 3.5 to 28MHz contest bands, the exchange is signal report and serial number, with German stations sending DOK. The 50MHz AFS contest runs from 0900 to 1300UTC today. Using all modes, the exchange is signal report, serial number and locator. Also today, the second RoLo contest runs from 1900 to 2030UTC. This is CW only on the 80m band and the exchange is signal report and a rolling locator. Today also sees the UK Microwave group’s 24-76GHz contest runs from 0900 to 1700UTC. Using all modes, the exchange is signal report, serial number and locator. Monday sees the RSGB FT4 series continue. Running from 1900 to 2030UTC on the 80m band in FT4 mode only, the exchange is your locator, using NA VHF Contest format. On Tuesday the 1.3GHz UKAC takes place from 1900 to 2030UTC. Using all modes on the 23cm band, the exchange is signal report, serial number and locator. Next weekend it’s the CQWW DX SSB contest. Running from 0000UTC on the 24th to 2359 on the 25th, it’s SSB-only on the 1.8 to 28MHz contest bands. The exchange is signal report and Zone, which is 14 for the UK. Now the radio propagation report, compiled by G0KYA, G3YLA and G4BAO on Friday the 16th of October. We had a little flurry of solar activity last week, but it didn’t amount to much. Region 2775 decayed to a spotless plage and didn’t contribute at all after Tuesday the 13th. A new region began forming while on the far side of the Sun and has turned into view off the east limb. The new region has been assigned active region 2776 and, while a few spots are currently visible, so far only minor B-class solar flares have been detected. Geomagnetic conditions were quiet, with the Kp index fluctuating between zero and one. This was due to a lack of coronal hole activity, which meant the solar wind was subdued, generally keeping below 300km/s. As a result, HF conditions have been quite good, with lots of DX being reported by CDXC members. Patrice, FK8HA in New Caledonia has been reported on 15m SSB, as has Mike, 5H3EE in Tanzania on 15m CW. October can also be a good month for 40m contacts into Australia and New Zealand. A number of contacts have been logged and Predtest.uk shows that 0600-0700hrs is probably best for a long-path contact; 1300-1600hrs might favour a short-path one. Next week NOAA predicts the solar flux index will remain around 70, but the Kp index may rise, probably due to a returning coronal hole. It predicts a Kp index of four on the 20th and unsettled geomagnetic conditions which may peak around the 25th-26th with a Kp index of six. So the conclusion is, make the most of the HF this weekend as the predicted conditions are likely to be poor for the rest of next week. Otherwise, look for auroral contacts on 10m next weekend. And now the VHF and up propagation news. This is a tricky week to predict, but hopefully with some chance of Tropo. The VHF highlight though is the peak of the Orionids meteor shower on the morning of the 21st. With a ZHR of 20, it’s one of the larger ones of the year. The shower is already underway and runs from about October 2 to November 7. It’s caused by the stream of debris left behind by Comet Halley. On the Tropo front, we ended last week with high pressure occupying much of the country and offering a chance of paths primarily between the UK and France plus across the North Sea to southern Scandinavia and Baltic. Early next week a low tracks south-east from Iceland towards Denmark and introduces colder showery weather and a good prospect for rain scatter with heavy showers over the adjoining coastal waters. After mid-week, a new high builds in from the west and leaves us in high-pressure Tropo weather to finish the week. The Moon’s declination is negative all week reaching a minimum on Wednesday, so Moon visibility windows are short. The maximum Moon elevation in South-East England is just 12 degrees and, as we passed perigee last Friday night, path losses will increase. The 144MHz sky noise is high until the end of this week, above 2600 kelvin on Wednesday, so, all in all, it is a poor week for EME. Finally, keep an eye out for auroral propagation due to the predicted disturbed Sun. And that’s all from the propagation team this week.

About Dr. David DayDr. David Day is a Professor of Psychology at Claremont McKenna College and Director of the Kravis Leadership Institute. Day is a prolific scholar, a great conversationalist, and has served on the faculty at Pennsylvania State University, Singapore Management University, and the University of Western Australia. His goal - Make a Difference.Quotes from This Episode"You want to invest in your development because everybody needs to be a leader, even when they are not the leader.""How do you view yourself? What is your identity? What's your self-efficacy? What is your level of self-awareness? These are proximal outcomes of a developmental process that we can measure and will give us some idea of whether long-term change is likely to be happening.""So the whole notion of a leader identity is really important because it drives resource allocation. Our identity is basically what we think is important. And we invest our most valuable resource, our time, in what we think is most important.""This whole distinction that there's a leader and there's a follower is a misnomer. People are both.""Leader development is really about developing an individual to be more effective in leadership roles and processes, whereas leadership development is really developing collective capacity for leadership. We don't know a lot about the latter and we know virtually nothing about how the leader development piece informs the leadership development piece."Recent Articles by Dr. David DayKragt, D., & Day, D. We’re re-branding…again! This episode would have been “The Next 200 Project” but from now on we’ll go by “The Ellises’ Analysis” (just to twist your tongue into a few knots). If you only ever thought of this podcast as “The Top 100 Project” anyway, then, well, nothing to see here. As for episode #351, we have the privilege of tackling one of the best reality-based space films ever made. Apollo 13 is a thrilling and inspiring docu-drama, but it’s also a very believable procedural. Ron Howard has never directed anything better than this. It’s also another in a long line of bittersweet Tom Hanks movies. He’s excellent, of course, but all the actors (particularly Ed Harris) are dynamite. We DO get into some alternate casting choices---as we did on Inside Out last week---but that’s just for fun because this cast is aces. And let’s hear it for the teamwork of all the real-life people involved in this mission (including their families), but also of course for the cast & crew of this gripping movie. Oh, and let’s also hear it for that heroic LEM! Guenter will strap you in tight as we break down the wonderful Apollo 13. Well, Actually: Other movies DID use the KC 135 “Vomit Comet” to shoot some weightless scenes, including The Mummy a few years ago (the Tom Cruise one). Also, James Horner DID win 2 Oscars for Titanic (for the music score and for co-writing “My Heart Will Go On” with Will Jennings, not with Celine Dion). If you have to help 3 guys get out of an outer-space pickle, you’ll need some Sparkplug Coffee to help you stay awake. They’ve got so much great stuff in addition to the fine, fine coffee.    Qatar Airways delivered more punch to it's air cargo offering announcing purchase of five B 777 Freighters at Paris Air Show in a ceremony that included  His Excellency Jassim Saif Ahmed Al-Sulaiti, Qatari Minister of Transport and Communications. "This is an order that will propel our growth and, I firmly believe, confirms us as the leading cargo operator in the world.  " said His Excellency, Mr. Akbar Al Baker, CEO, Qatar Airways Group.   Ingo Zimmer, CEO of fast growing ATC, a big winner in the global GSSA game serving 75 airlines, passed up attending the “gala” Air Cargo Europe awards dinner Wednesday June 5 in Munich.      Ingo, as dynamic as he is tall at 6 foot 5, had a better idea, delivering a simple thank you to his customers in an extraordinary once in a lifetime setting. Air Cargo Europe bestowed another blizzard of air cargo awards at its “Gala Dinner in Munich.      Forgive our skepticism, but something about this rings a bit hollow when air cargo folks sit down to a $75 or $150-a-plate trade show dinner to pat themselves on the back. We picked up a copy of the “Official Air Cargo Europe” daily publication.      Printed on extra thick glossy stock, the issue felt and looked wonderful.      But then we got to thinking: how can the air cargo industry, which is attempting to project an image of sustainability, allow itself to be presented to the professionals (at ACE) in a series of printed issues that have the look and feel of having been printed on what remains of the Black Forest?  Although he was action central in American, German and International air cargo for more than 50 years, and is now retired, a belated special Happy 80th Birthday salute to the great Guenter Rohrmann, who was born on April 15,1939. The essential thing you need to know about GR is that he was an industry builder. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/geoffrey-arend/support

Episode 4 Wonky wine + digital exploration When our friend + client David approached us about speaking on our podcast, we were both excited and mildly terrified. David is a razor sharp intellect whose day job entails designing buildings for Shape Architecture, a local firm and R+A client. His nighttime hobby is hosting wine tasting events with his brother and wine enthusiast community, a hobby we can seriously get behind (and so should you).We knew that any discussion with David would be deep and full of twists and vocabulary we’d have to Google later. David did not disappoint. Take a listen as we dive into the ways in which digital space and physical space collide in 2019 (think Instagrammable restaurants and more), as well as the pleasures and the pit falls of just being in this digital age for our generation and the one that follows. Sincerely, R+APlease note: we’ve changed our podcast title to The Mad Women Podcast - we apologize in advance for the confusion !

Guenter Råler 'This podcast is an overview of some of the music that inspired me in the past years and enriched my perspective on music. I choose a lot of different genres and styles, spacing from electroacou-stic music to IDM, from tribal rhythms to lo-fi dreamy arpeggios, but with a common ground between all the tracks, which is experimentation. I included artists from different parts of world and from a variety of cultures, languages and musical background. I really enjoy the diverse narratives coming from an eclectic mix, where a track from the 70s can sound as futuristic as some of the best IDM music we have now. To me, it’s a timeless evolution that needs to be discovered'. TRACKLIST: 1. Yosuke Nagao - Inori (Prayer) 2. Bernard Parmegiani - Étude Élastique 3. Oli XL - Stress Junkie 4. Lorn - set me free 5. On Monday, Guenter Grass, German Nobel literature prize-winner and author of The Tin Drum, died aged 87. Before his death he had been described as "the world’s most important living writer". We look back to 2009 when Guenter invited World Book Club into his home in Germany to put listeners' questions to him about his internationally-celebrated novel The Tin Drum. Bitter and impassioned, the book charts the rise and fall of Nazism through the mischievous eyes of Oskar Matzerath, a dwarf who decided to stop growing at the age of three. First published half a century ago, The Tin Drum was re-published in new translations all over the world to mark its 50th birthday in 2009. Image: Guenter Grass. Credit: Reuters
