A committee in the Pennsylvania House is advancing two elections bills. Voter ID and a suite of reforms are being sent to the House floor for consideration. Representative Malcolm Kenyatta, a Democrat from Philadelphia, says the elections reform package will address election security concerns like double voting and improving verification of voter registration, while voter ID is a solution in search of a problem. Historical societies, libraries and other local education and government organizations can apply for state funding to help improve the care and accessibility of Pennsylvania's historical records. On May 2nd, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission disclosed, in their online public library, that a fire broke out at Three Mile Island's Unit 2 reactor building back on Febrary 11th. Plant owners TMI-2 Solutions did not put out a public notice... although they did notify the NRC and the state Department of Environmental Protection at the time. That means a community advisory panel did not learn about the fire until the NRC's public posting on May 2nd. Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman was meeting recently with representatives from a Pennsylvania teachers union when things quickly devolved. Fetterman began repeating himself, shouting and slamming his hands on a desk. The interaction adds to the questions being raised about the Democratic senator's mental health and behavior barely three years after a he survived a stroke and two years after being treated for depression. The Pittsburgh Pirates fired manager Derek Shelton following a rocky opening month to the Major League Baseball season that saw Pittsburgh quickly slip into last place in the NL Central. The most influential religious historian of the twentieth century, Huston Smith, once referred to it as the "best-kept secret" in history. Did the ancient Greeks use drugs to find God? And did the earliest Christians inherit the same secret tradition? A profound knowledge of visionary plants, herbs, and fungi passed from one generation to the next, ever since the Stone Age? This discussion on Febrary 1, 2021, between CSWR Director Charles Stang and Brian Muraresku about his new book, The Immortality Key: The Secret History of the Religion with No Name, a groundbreaking dive into the role of psychedelics in the ancient Mediterranean world. In what is supposed to be a defining day in the 2020 presidential campaign, we are left with an uncertain mess. The candidates, now in New Hampshire ahead of next week's primary, not knowing if they're winners or losers due to technical issues with the count. Iowa's Democratic party, holding a conference call with the campaigns this hour, says delayed caucus results should come later today. In the meantime, frustration, anger and plenty of spin from the candidates. And President Trump, hoping to look past impeachment and ahead to the 2020 election in tonight's State of the Union speech. Today's panel: Seung Min Kim and Rachael Bade with The Washington Post, Julie Pace with the Associate Press, and Julie Hirschfeld Davis with The New York Times. Also on the program: CNN's Leyla Santago and Jeff Zeleny.
The Future of Everything with Russ Altman: "Londa Schiebinger: Why does gender matter?" From designing research to setting priorities for funding decisions and drafting policy, understanding gender differences enhances all phases of scientific research. In safety engineering, ergonomic differences between men and women are important. Conventional seat belts do not fit pregnant women properly and motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of fetal death related to maternal trauma. Analyses of sex differences have led to the development of pregnant crash test dummies that enhance safety in automobile testing and design. In medicine, osteoporosis has been conceptualized primarily as a women's disease, yet after a certain age men account for nearly a third of osteoporosis-related hip fractures. Tragically, when men break their hips, they tend to die. We don't know why. Analyzing the interaction between sex and gender in osteoporosis has led to new diagnostics for men, and the search for better treatments is underway. In these and many other cases, historian Londa Schiebinger points out that if we don't consider sex or gender analysis, past bias may be perpetuated into the future, even when governments, universities and companies have implemented policies to foster equality. The big question now, she says, is: How can humans automate processes that also contribute to creating a fair and equal society? Schiebinger highlights examples of efforts where computer scientists are working to create mathematically rigorous definitions of fairness in order to develop and optimize algorithms that guarantee fairness. There is much work to be done, but as Scheibinger sees it, there is a big opportunity for these algorithms as well as the robotic systems they will enable to challenge and eventually reconfigure gender norms.
