In which the three wise men from the mountain come down to discuss the film, The Five Deadly Venoms for the beleaguered people. Released in 1978, the film was directed by Chang Cheh and stars Chiang Sheng, Sun Chien, Philip Kwok, Lo Mang, Wei Pei, Lu Feng, Wang Lung-Wei, Ku Feng, and many others. It was produced by the Shaw Brothers STudio and filmed in Hong Kong.

This week on The First Run, as the theaters shudder their doors and quarantine sets in, Chris and Matt embrace the streaming world with Richard Stanley's ‘Color Out Of Space'. Nicholas Cage stars as a man desperately trying to keep his family together, and alive, as an interdimensional wave of color and light arrives to do…something. Then the Martial Arts Marathon rolls on with ‘Crippled Avengers', the pseudo-sequel to ‘The Five Deadly Venoms'. Five Deadly Venoms ('五毒') also known as Five Venoms is a cult 1978 Hong Kong martial arts film directed by Chang Cheh, starring the Venom Mob, with martial arts choreography by Leung Ting, and produced by the Shaw Brothers Studio, about five kung-fu fighters with unique animal styles: the Centipede, the Snake, the Scorpion, the Lizard, and the Toad. Closing out our Kung Fu-bruary series for 2019 (which was picked by you, the listeners!), tonight's movie is Five Deadly Venoms (a.k.a. The Five Venoms)! And while I am genuinely a little sad that this series is over for now (don't worry...I'm sure we are going to discuss more kung fu movies in the future!), we are wrapping things up with another one of Chang Cheh's iconic kung fu films! While there might actually be less fighting in Five Deadly Venoms than there was in the other films we have reviewed this month, the character driven plot and the focus on the five individual fighting styles makes each fight feel unique and draws you in closer to each of the characters! Dionne (AKA Lady Cao Feng) interviews Lu Feng while at Dragonfest in Burbank, California. The interview was conducted on August 26, 2018 with the help of Christopher Sin (who translated the answers). Lu Feng is a member of the Venom Mob and a stellar martial arts performer and fight choreographer. We needed a baseline for our Shaw Brothers project, so we dipped a couple years into the past to check out one of the more famous of the studio’s martial arts flicks, 1978’s Five Deadly Venoms. Enjoy!

Inspiring a whole sub-genre of mystical East Coast hip hop, the 5 deadly venoms is the epitome of classic kung fu pulp. Matt indulges his nostalgia, championing the cheesy sound affects and bad dub, while Mark gives a more adult sub-titled perspective. With an arguably nebulous plot, the premise is solid but that's not really the point.
