Episode 263: The Joy of Spring

Warm Thoughts

As I write these lines, my thoughts are still centered on a hill outside Jerusalem. It is so overwhelming to realize God's love in our lives. Reflecting on Easter memories shared with family and friends, one finds in life meaning, purpose, hope, and love. Easter is the greatest celebration of the year, and should be celebrated every day. It is a joyous celebration of victory. The whole world becomes more beautiful at Easter time. For Easter ushers in spring, when all nature seemed as dead, there suddenly is life from brown branches and small twigs and stems tender green leaves come forth. The whole world is a veritable garden making a beautiful Easter offering. Have you ever wondered why the beautiful Lily is called the Easter Lily? The lily has been used to decorate churches on Easter ever since Civil War times. The desire of churches to bring consolation to those who lost loved ones in war made it natural to choose Easter, which is the promise of the victory of life over death, as the occasion for special services. The lily, because it is symbolic of purity and new life, was so widely used that it became known as the Easter Lily. April showers bring May flowers. The song tells us the showers will bring many blessings among them, the flower gardens of spring. Warm Thoughts: God never sends the winter without the joy of spring. God Almighty first planted a garden, and indeed it is the purest of human pleasures. Francis Bacon, "And of Gardens." This wish for Easter blessings is especially for you. So it's to be expected, warm thoughts go with it. May you have many Easter blessings!Warm Thoughts from the Little Home on the Prairie Over a Cup of Tea written by Dr. Luetta G. Send us a textWelcome to Celebrate Poe - Episode 359 - Vampires and the Last SupperWhen I started this podcast, I assumed the topics of the Last Supper and Easter would have nothing to do with anything related to Poe - oh sure, we do have evidence that the Allans attended the Anglican - or Episcopal Church in Richmond - but basically we don't really thing of anything related to religion when we think of Edgar Poe.I know I had said the we would soon delve into Bram Stoker's Dracula - but reality has a way of causing you to change your plans, and so this podcast will be definitely delving into Bram Stoker's Dracula for several episodes next week.  For Easter this year, I did 3 episodes that tied the subject of vampires to the Christian church - and I feel the episodes are very respectful and not at all sacrilegious. And when I first delved into the topic vampires - in preparation for Poe's vampiric stories - I never thought that there would be any connection - however perverted - between, say, communion and vampires. But the more research I did, the more I saw that there was a perverted comparison between the blood demands of a vampire and the truly sacred blood and love of Christ.  Such a comparison offers a fascinating exploration of opposing spiritual and existential themes - of good and evil. Both concepts revolve around the symbolism of blood as a source of life, but they diverge in their purpose and moral implications. And let me apologize in advance - some of the ideas in this podcast might come across as a bit dense and even hard to take, but stick with me.   So the next three podcast episodes will actually deal with Holy Week.Thank you for experiencing Celebrate Poe.

QUOTES FOR REFLECTION“Christians, at their best, are the fools who dare believe in God's power to call dead things to life.”~Esau MacCaulley, professor, author, and opinion writer for the New York Times “There is something indefinitely first-hand about it…. Is there anything quite like it in all of ancient literature?”~C.H. Dodd (1884-1973), Oxford scholar and professor, on the Gospel of John “I have been reading poems, romances, vision literature, legends, myths all my life. I know what they are like. I know that none of them is like this…. The reader who doesn't see this has simply not learned how to read.”~C.S. Lewis (1898-1963), Oxford scholar and professor, on the Gospel of John “I accept the resurrection of Jesus not as an invention of the community of disciples, but as an historical event."~Pinchas Lapide (1922-1997), Jewish scholar and historian “We are laid open to infinityFor Easter love has burst His tomb and ours. Now nothing shelters us from God's desire –Not flesh, not sky, not stars, not even sin.Now glory waits so he can enter in. Now does the dance begin.”~Elizabeth Rooney (1924-1999), Smith College graduate and poet “Make no mistake: if He rose at all, it was as His body;if the cells' dissolution did not reverse, the molecules reknit, the amino acids rekindle, the Church will fall. The stone is rolled back, not papier-mâché, not a stone in a story,But the vast rock of materiality that in the slowgrinding of time will eclipse for each of us the wide light of day.”~John Updike (1932-2009) in “Seven Stanzas at Easter” “The human being is only a reed, the most feeble in nature; but he is a thinking reed…. But when the universe crushes him, the human being becomes still more noble than that which kills him, because he knows that he is dying…. The universe, it does not have a clue.”~Blaise Pascal (1623-1662), French mathematicianSERMON PASSAGEJohn 20:1-18 (ESV)John 19 38 After these things Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took away his body. 39 Nicodemus also, who earlier had come to Jesus by night, came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds in weight. 40 So they took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews. 41 Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. 42 So because of the Jewish day of Preparation, since the tomb was close at hand, they laid Jesus there. John 20 1 Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. 2 So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.” 3 So Peter went out with the other disciple, and they were going toward the tomb. 4 Both of them were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. 5 And stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in. 6 Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen cloths lying there, 7 and the face cloth, which had been on Jesus' head, not lying with the linen cloths but folded up in a place by itself. 8 Then the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; 9 for as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that he must rise from the dead. 10 Then the disciples went back to their homes. 11 But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb, and as she wept she stooped to look into the tomb. 12 And she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had lain, one at the head and one at the feet. 13 They said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.” 14 Having said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing, but she did not know that it was Jesus. 15 Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?” Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.” 16 Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned and said to him in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means Teacher). 17 Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to my brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.'” 18 Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord”—and that he had said these things to her.

alyona alyona - "Ridni moi (feat. Jerry Heil)," a 2022 single on ENKO. For Easter this year, Ukrainian rapper alyona alyona shared a plea to celebrate and to uphold traditions with her latest single "Рідні мої." She writes on YouTube: The warmest memories of most people in Ukraine during their lives are warm family gatherings for Easter. Opportunity to get away from business, to see the closest ones, to visit distant relatives, to take part in creation of Easter eggs, to taste mother's or grandmother's dishes from the childhood, to unite in continuation of national and family traditions... This year has radically changed us, changed everything around us. Many families will no longer reunite, many grandparents will no longer please their grandchildren, and many ovens will no longer bake Easter cakes. We have changed our values, changed our attitude to many things. But we will always carry the traditions of our nation and our families through the years. May the memory of them be eternal. This track is about pain, sadness, memories and family warmth. And about that things which unite us all, wherever we are. On this week's episode, we tackle the tough questions that every church is facing as Easter approaches: What's the best way to maximize the ministry impact of Easter week? Is it possible for that momentum to multiply even after your final service ends? Click here for a Easter follow-up summary guide based on the ideas in this episode. Learn more about the Volunteer Accelerator here. Easter - Is what happens before or after more important? 4:24 - Minecraft Easter egg hunt to walk through the story of Jesus. https://www.cbsnews.com/newyork/news/sun-grove-church-minecraft-easter-egg-hunt/ https://sungrove.org/minecraft/ https://www.timesunion.com/local/article/Easter-egg-hunt-to-happen-on-Minecraft-15193785.php https://www.baptistpress.com/resource-library/news/children-respond-to-gospel-through-minecraft-easter-egg-hunt/ https://www.mycrossroadschurch.com/minecraft-easter-egg-hunt.html 6:41 - Use the pandemic to pause and ask valuable questions about how your church approaches Easter. What are you doing? Why? For whom? 9:27 - Is it possible to create a hybrid Easter experience that appeals and applies to both outsiders and insiders? Creating a hybrid often leads to doing neither one well. 12:03 - Using Easter as an opportunity to engage young families who have not yet returned to church post-COVID. 14:04 - Using Saturday “fun” events as a stepping stone to building relationships with people. Consider reaching people as a marathon, not a sprint. Invite people to come back on Sunday for Easter service, but be OK if they don't come back right away. Then measure the results and impact of that event on attendance long-term. 15:54 - Churches doing a primarily “fun” event should look and feel a little different from other fun events (e.g., PTA events). They should know us by our love. It should be extraordinary and attractive to people. 16:35 - What are we aiming for people to experience when they come on Easter? Visualize it like a storyboard through someone's journey: the face of the parking team, the welcome team's interactions, the connection center with a free coffee card, etc. 19:12 - Baptism on Easter Sunday vs baptism on the weekend after Easter 22:17 - How do you equip and train your people to be at their best on days like Easter when people show up who might only come to church once or twice per year? 27:01 - How do you follow up with people after Easter? At least one contact point within 24 hours of someone filling out a connection card. For Easter, enlist a few extra volunteers into the standard process for follow up to help with the extra influx of people. Suggestions for actions steps to suggest to people when following up. 29:32 - The importance of keeping your connect card simple so as not to overwhelm people. Name, phone, email, and ability to subscribe to the newsletter. 30:00 - Logistical considerations leading up to Easter, for example, reorder connect cards so you have enough! Then equip your ushers to replace and replenish them between services. 30:50 - The personal experience of attending a church for 2 years without being contacted by that church even after filling out many connection cards. Contrasted with a different church where, within 24 hours of visiting had a call from the associate pastor just wanted to connect and hear more about them and their family. 35:14 - Do the people your serving feel known, cared for, and recognized? This can be the thing that makes the difference in your ministry! Remember that a connection card is a person that you worked and prayed for! Not just a number. We need to be good stewards of the people God blesses us with. Many people are shocked if a pastor reaches out to them. The care for people must be genuine or people will be able to tell. 37:15 - Application Question: Look at your church staff and ask, “How does the time, energy, and effort that we're pouring into preparation for Easter similar to the time and effort we spend following up with people after Easter? How will carry that momentum forward?” 38:09 - Everything in a church's budget can be boiled down to an in-reach (grow) and an outreach (reach) bucket. Many times there is a disproportionate ratio in how much people will spend on outreach. Easter might be a good moment to pause and explore how you are working with people and developing them even after they are connected with your church.
