On this episode I'm joined by Genevieve Gaignard as we discuss her latest exhibition, and third solo with Vielmetter Los Angeles, Thinking Out Loud. In the show, Gaignard excavates concepts of identity and reflects on the intersections of life's journey. In what might be Gaignard's most intimate body of work to date, Thinking Out Loud overlaps her practice with her most recent lived experience, set against the backdrop of her newly situated life in New York where she has a new studio. Her symbol-laden, cryptic work speaks to larger truths: the building and breaking down of walls, the rupture of domesticity as wallpaper tears, and the detritus of everyday life that we must all work our way through. Gaignard explores the veil as armor, representing protection while moving through growth. Gaignard has described her working process as a “lived playlist, a diaristic processing of my life, a creative vibe set against the backdrop of mix tapes and personal soundtracks that transcends, romanticizes, and provides an escape from the everyday.”

Tam Pham is pretty much the perfect guest for this podcast..He dropped out of college and instead of pursuing a traditional path he decided that he wanted to go learn business from the entrepreneurs he looked up to.He's apprenticed under 3 world class entrepreneurs that you might have heard of:1) Sam Parr founder of the Hustle2) Andrew Warner who's the host and founder of Mixergy3) Jason Gaignard who's a master networker, event organizer, and best selling author (I first heard of him on the Tim Ferris podcast).Along the way Tam's worked his way up from being an intern crashing on couches to becoming the right hand man and chief operator of MMT (Jason Gaignard's company). If you're interested at all in apprenticing for an entrepreneur you look up you're going to love this episode. If you want to get updates from Tam on what he's up to go sign up for his newsletter: https://www.tampham.co/jam/And if you're reading this, don't be shy!
For the penultimate episode of How To Be An Artist, Kate Bryan is joined by Genevieve Gaignard. Based in Los Angeles, she enlists the use of photographic self-portraiture, sculpture and installation to explore race, femininity, class, and their various intersections. In this episode, Gaignard chats to Bryan about her recent residency at the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, how she draws inspiration from her mother's aesthetic, and shares advice to aspiring artists. Gaignard's work has been exhibited throughout the United States, with shows at the Studio Museum in Harlem, the California African American Museum in Los Angeles, and the Houston Center for Photography. Her installationNever Too Much can also be found at Soho Warehouse in Downtown LA.

In this episode Caroline Fowler (Starr Director of the Research and Academic Program at the Clark Art Institute) speaks with Genevieve Gaignard, a Los Angeles-based artist whose mixed-media practice explores the intersections of race, class, and femininity within the United States. While thinking through the notion of home as an impossible or privileged construct, Genevieve reflects on her experience moving back to rural Massachusetts for a residency at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, and how her practice fits within the predominately white demographic of the Berkshires compared to her diverse creative community in LA. Genevieve discusses her 2020 exhibition A Long Way From Home and contemplates the ways in which her collages and photographic self-portraits grapple with racial and class stereotypes, particularly in the polarized contemporary political landscape.
I tried to get Genevieve to admit that she is driven by her anger and resentment from being brought up in a mized race family, but I was way off base. It turns out that it just made her curious and inspired to find out more about different sides of her personity which is what inspires the wide range of characters she creates in her work. Also-her mother is great at finding and collecting cool shit which she can use as much of as she likes. My advice to her is to be friendly to shy guys because they don't realize she's shy too, since it's quite hidden in her. http://www.nytimes.com/slideshow/2016/01/07/fashion/genevieve-gaignard-a-photographer-collagist-and-installation-artist/s/20120107Genevieve-slide-QBQU.html?_r=1

After many years earning 22 times the national average income, Jayson Gaignard realized that he wasn’t 22 times happier, so he decided to walk away. He felt stuck on the entrepreneurial hamster wheel, building a business he hated to buy things he didn’t need, to impress people he didn’t necessarily like. While he looked highly successful on the outside, he was completely bankrupt on the inside. Fast forward to today, and Jayson’s life is virtually unrecognizable from what it was only a few short years ago... Praised by Forbes as a “Networker to Watch” in 2015 and Founder of one of the top events in the world for entrepreneurs — MastermindTalks — which has featured world-renowned entrepreneurs such as Tim Ferriss, Gary Vaynerchuk, James Altucher, Guy Kawasaki, and hundreds more. Today, Jayson joins the podcast to share stories about recovering from his personal rock bottom, along with his strategies for building a community that makes a meaningful impact. You’ll also learn why the right combination of ignorance, confidence, and hard work can help you achieve your biggest goals! Get access to the full show notes by visiting: http://halelrod.com/204
Today we are joined by Jayson Gaignard - quite possibly one of the world's best networkers. In 2012, Gaignard began curating dinners in Toronto, Canada with small groups of entrepreneurs that focused on relationship building. The invite-only dinners became MastermindTalks—larger conferences for entrepreneurs geared toward health, wealth, self-improvement, and networking. Despite humble beginnings, Jason has grown mastermind talks into a world-renowned institution in the entrepreneurial space, hosting such greats as Tim Ferriss, James Altucher, A. J. Jacobs, Esther Perel, Dave Asprey, Guy Kawasaki, and Marc Ecko. In fact, Forbes described Gaignard as one of the top networkers to watch in 2015. He's also published a book and produces a podcast on the topic of network building. In this episode, I wanted to learn more about how Jayson has built such strong ties with some of the world's most influential entrepreneurs, and see if we can learn anything from his success. My father always told me that it's not just about what you know, but also whom you know - and if that's true, then both Jayson and his incredible skill set are definitely worth knowing. Throughout the episode, we talk about the power of a network like Jayson's for improving oneself, accomplishing one's goals, and making a lasting impact on the world. Jayson also shares some very practical tips for building your own network and connecting with the people you admire. All in all, I think you'll take a LOT away from Jayson's success story, and his wisdom.
