“You can also look at resources of putting your time into building that network of advisers. It's a bit of time to build that but then you get so much value out of that as long as you're willing to listen.” —Gregory Kalinin   Dynamic agriculture can be seen as a way of weaving regenerative farming into a holistic and adaptive system that can benefit both the farmers and the environment. By blending these two practices, farmers can meet specific goals, such as minimizing tillage, recycling organic matter, using cover crops, rotating crops and livestock, avoiding synthetic inputs, and diversifying production. Dynamic agriculture can also help farmers respond to the changing demands and preferences of consumers, such as organic, local, fair trade, or niche products.  This week, Gregory shares his journey from being a coffee geek to the Co-Founder of Holistic Roasters, a biodynamic and organic coffee roasting company. As a coffee enthusiast who was introduced to high-quality siphon coffee in Japan, Gregory developed a passion for exploring different coffee brewing and roasting methods. He began home roasting and sourced biodynamic coffee for a school fundraiser, which led to the creation of Holistic Roasters alongside his business partner. Under Gregory's leadership, Holistic Roasters has expanded its product offerings while committing to sustainable and regenerative farming practices.  Listen in as Justine and Gregory explain what biodynamic agriculture means and how it fits into the larger movement of regenerative farming. They also discuss the importance of testing ideas through small pilots before fully committing as well as insights into building a values-aligned business in the specialty coffee industry.   Meet Gregory:  Gregory is a serial entrepreneur and corporate executive with a track record of developing and implementing new business ideas across multiple industries in start-up, turnaround, and rapid-change environments.   After completing an MBA from McGill University in 1995, Gregory co-founded a high-tech startup that achieved a successful IPO on the Canadian stock market. The company was recognized by Canadian Business Magazine as one of the hottest software companies and by Profit Magazine as one of the country's fastest-growing companies.   In 2001, Gregory was recruited by Bombardier Aerospace to launch a new business unit called Flexjet in the Asia-Pacific region. Executing a pioneering development strategy allowed the business to surpass growth targets using a fraction of the allocated budget. Flexjet Asia-Pacific became the region's #1 business aircraft charter network by attracting ultra-high-net-worth individuals, political leaders, and Fortune 100 clients. For his work, Gregory received a special bonus from the Bombardier Board of Directors for having "achieved exceptional results, with an exemplary level of perseverance".   In 2008, Gregory led the turnaround of an aerospace manufacturer where he increased sales by 680%, diversified the customer base, and rebuilt the Company's reputation. Emergia Aerospace became the #1 supplier of production line tooling in Quebec with customers ranging from Bombardier to the Canadian Air Force and Bell Helicopter Textron.   Currently, Gregory works with several companies including a talent assessment and performance management company; Holistic Roasters, a Demeter USA-certified roaster and distributor of biodynamic coffee; and MiX Café, a private café for employees and their guests.   LinkedIn   Connect with Holistic Roasters:  Website Facebook X Instagram TikTok   Connect with MELK: Website      Connect with NextGen Purpose: Website Facebook Instagram  LinkedIn YouTube Episode Highlights: 00:33 Biodynamic Agriculture Defined 05:12 How Biodynamic Fits Into Regenerative Agriculture 11:03 The Third Wave Coffee Movement 15:47 Navigating Product Market Fit 21:34 Product Development, Feedback, and Pivoting Tips 25:01 The Value of Building a Network of Advisors and Experts

The Business of You with Rachel Gogos

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 21, 2023 50:28

Carrie Richardson is a successful entrepreneur, having scaled three service-based businesses from zero to seven figures in the last ten years. But she got her start in an unexpected place: In a fitness center, cleaning weights at four in the morning.  This is the compelling story of how Carrie earned her sobriety, built multiple award-winning companies, met her husband and started a thriving consulting company. It serves as a great reminder that no matter what rung of the ladder you're on, you can climb all the way to the top.  Carrie Richardson founded Managed Sales Pros in Winnipeg, MB, Canada in 2013, and Everywhere Managed LLC in Las Vegas, NV in 2016 until its sale in 2020.  Carrie began her business as a solopreneur making phone calls by herself - and the demand for outbound cold calling quickly surpassed her ability to fulfill on her own. Carrie bootstrapped a home-based business into two award-winning niche-focused call centers. Carrie graduated from the Eureka Project Technology Incubator in 2016, the same year Managed Sales Pros was named the 25th fastest-growing company in Canada by Profit Magazine. Everywhere Managed was founded in 2016 to support US-based technology manufacturers that required US-based outbound sales development teams. Everywhere Managed hired almost exclusively out of workforce reentry programs in Nevada. Carrie and her team developed a one-of-a-kind on-the-job training program for technology sales. The Everywhere Managed unique approach to employee development earned Carrie an Athena Leadership nomination for advancing women in the workforce. Everywhere Managed was 100% female owned and managed, and all executive team members were promoted from within after being outbound agents. Carrie was inducted into the Las Vegas Women's Hall of Fame for the achievement, and to date has been the launch pad for two successful entrepreneurs, four sales development leaders (six figure earners with stock in fast-growing tech firms) and has helped over 50 employees move from social assistance to self-sufficiency. In October 2020, the omnichannel marketing agency EBQuickstart acquired Everywhere Managed. In 2021, Carrie co-founded Richardson & Richardson with her husband Ian to help small business owners create and execute process-driven, repeatable sales and marketing programs after they have solved for all systemic challenges in their business. Carrie has found that most companies start out believing they have a sales or marketing problem, when in reality they are also experiencing financial, service delivery, staffing, and communication challenges that are impacting their ability to win and retain clients. Richardson & Richardson Consulting helps to identify areas for improvement in those areas and beyond. Carrie's journey began with a powerful origin story Carrie always loved selling. She was self-taught, a natural born salesperson. But when she decided to get sober, she faced unexpected obstacles: Sales jobs usually came with boozy lunches that made it easy to fall off the wagon.  Being a determined and process-minded person, Carrie saw that her course had to change. She quit sales and landed a job at a gym with a four a.m. shift.  Carrie had to clean the gym, answer the phones, and stand at the front desk while she worked to become a certified personal trainer. It was hard, humbling work. Setting her ego aside, Carrie meticulously scrubbed the weights clean every morning - and was spotted by the manager.  Soon after, she was called into the office. Thinking she was going to get fired, she was surprised when her manager told her that she deserved a big promotion - with a massive pay raise. Carrie never forgot that moment. Someone gave her a chance and believed in her. Her work was recognized. It inspired her to build companies that truly support people - no matter what they're going through.  When Carrie left her job at the gym, she decided to return to sales. It wasn't long before she started her own company staffed with telemarketers niched into the world of IT.  A lesson in giving people a chance When she started her own call centers, Carrie encountered major staffing challenges. As she jokes herself, nobody grows up wanting to become a telemarketer - and HR was wasting time chasing candidates who did not want the job.  This challenge led Carrie to think creatively. She decided to begin hiring candidates from economic development agencies. Many were coming to work from jail or rehab, and many were experiencing food and housing insecurity. Carrie saw an opportunity to help them succeed.  The call centers hired people who needed positive work experience and even provided food and housing support. Carrie got to watch them build better lives - buying their first cars, getting married, having children and even starting their own businesses. Some of her former employees have launched their very own call centers, using systems they learned working at Everything Managed. After being given a chance herself, Carrie handed out second chances to hundreds of individuals, effectively changing the lives of them and their families. Carrie's advice to entrepreneurs: Build it better Carrie Richardson loves numbers, and she hates wasted time. When asked about her greatest advice for beginning entrepreneurs, she recommends that we focus our marketing efforts on things that produce real, tangible results.  Rather than just shooting out messages on LinkedIn and hoping for a response, Carrie suggests that you take stock of what works for you, and what doesn't. Is your website working for you? Are your cold calls being answered? Are you getting the results you want? If not, it might be time to refocus your energy - or hire Richardson & Richardson Consulting for professional guidance. Quotes “Most IT companies - like most other companies - start their business and grab a couple clients that are low-hanging fruit. They might take a couple from the previous company they worked for, or they build their business initially by supporting their parents' friends. But they're only used to closing referral-based sales appointments. They build up their company entirely from word of mouth and referrals. When these leads stop coming in, they don't know what to do. By the time they call a company like mine, they should have called a year before!” “I don't think you should ignore any opportunity to prospect. Try all of it. Measure it and see if you can improve on it! If you see that sending twenty LinkedIn messages means that two will respond, awesome. How do you get three people to respond? But don't just send out messages all day, willy-nilly. To me, that's not sales or marketing because it can't be measured.” “Your website should translate to dollars out the bottom of your funnel. But most people aren't measuring it.” “Work with professionals up front. Make major investments in viability before you start investing in head count.” “What are you measuring? What KPI's are you reporting on? What are your accountability checkpoints?” “We hired people right out of jail, and right out of rehab. They might not have made it past screening for other jobs. Some were experiencing food insecurity or homelessness. We had a food bank in our office. If you were struggling between paychecks, we had resources. We provided breakfast and lunch for everyone. We helped people pay for apartments.” “We started watching peoples' lives change. They would come in to work after getting their hair done, for the first time since starting work for us. They would buy their first car, get married, or have a baby. Watching peoples' lives change was incredible.” “We worked with economic development agencies. They had people who were like, ‘Help me find a job! I need to work.'” “Yeah, this is your job today - but let me tell you about my life. Let me tell you where all of this took me! Cleaning the handles of some weights took me to a job that allowed me to save enough money to train with UFC kickboxers in Thailand. I did so many amazing things. And all of them came from being humble enough to take a job that I thought was a little bit beneath me.” Links mentioned in this episode: Visit the website for Richardson & Richardson Consulting at https://randr.consulting/  Watch on Youtube: “Make Smart Business Decisions with Carrie Richardson”, at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1CICPia7wA4  Listen to Carrie and Ian Richardson's podcast, “What's Important Now,” on Buzzsprout: https://win.buzzsprout.com/  Connect with Carrie Richardson on LinkedIn at http://LinkedIn.com/in/tinfoilhat2

In this episode, Joe interviews Vancouver-based serial entrepreneur, co-founder, president, and CEO of Better Plant Sciences Inc., and founder and CEO of NeonMind Biosciences, Penny White.  White works to take companies public, and was running Better Plant Sciences before creating NeonMind as a subsidiary, largely inspired by Michael Pollan and research by scientists at the University of British Columbia who were looking to treat addiction with CBD.  Now that NeonMind has successfully gone public (which just happened at the end of December), her goals with the company are to develop a protocol around using psilocybin to tackle obesity (they're in pre-clinical trials now and have 5 patents filed), to work more with medicinal mushrooms and sell products with proven health claims (they sell mushroom coffees now), and eventually get into work involving drug addiction and preventing the effects of Alzheimer's- also likely with psilocybin.  This podcast feels like a meeting of 2 minds fully immersed in the psychedelic world having a bit of a check-in about where we find ourselves at the beginning of 2021. Among other topics, they talk about NeonMind's path, taking companies public, how cannabis and psilocybin are regulated in Canada, the benefits of being able to prescribe psilocybin, the worries of oversaturation in Oregon, and the complications of trying to make legal cannabis businesses work in federally-illegal land. Notable Quotes “It’s cool for younger people who are coming of age and having money for the first time and deciding what to do with it, and people that are just interested in promoting things they believe in. It’s an opportunity for people to say: ‘I love the idea of psychedelics becoming legal or becoming available as drugs to help humanity, and so I’m going to buy some of this stock.’ It’s empowering in a way.” “We may end up doing some compound work. We may end up looking at other mushrooms and maybe combining more than just one compound- psilocybin maybe being the key compound. So we’re still at the early stages of what we’re doing, but by no means would we ever have any kind of monopoly on the use of psilocybin. I’m an ideas guy, not a process guy. Which is why I’m so excited to share the wisdom of a fellow entrepreneur, Trent Dyrsmid, with a totally different approach to business than I have. I love the feeling of building something new, figuring out how to make it work and getting it out into the world. EXPLAINING how I did it or how to make it better? Not my bag. Which, to be honest, makes scaling a business harder than it should be. I know, rationally, that SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) are crucial for business success... but I’ll be damned if I have the time or patience to build them. Enter our hero, Trent. An unassuming Canadian transplant, Trent is a different kind of entrepreneur than I am. He's a process nerd who figured out how to make creating...and USING... SOP's easy. I know this because we are now making all sorts of SOP's with his baller app, Flowster. There is nothing like a crisis to separate the great leaders from those that have been floating through good economic times. Most leaders know how to deal with certainty, but few understand the importance of being agile when uncertainty surrounds them. On July 28th, as PEO Leadership President and CEO, I will share some of my learnings over my 25 years experience of working with leaders from all over North America, as well as my observations of what has separated the great leaders from the rest of the pack over the last 4 months. I will be joined by special guest, Dr. J.P. Pawliw-Fry, world-renowned leadership expert, New York Time bestselling author, co-founder and president of IHHP, a Fast 100 company (Profit Magazine's fastest growing companies), who will moderate our webcast.   When times are good, it's very difficult to distinguish between average and great leaders - it takes time and numerous interactions. In a crisis, leadership skills, or a lack thereof, become evident very quickly - it's black and white, there is no gray area. In fact, the impact of leadership skills over the last four months has been so substantial that many leaders will be asked to step down and will be replaced by individuals who rose to the occasion.   This insightful webcast will provide you with the following takeaways:What differentiated great leaders from the rest of the pack? The importance of EQ and FQ.The importance of having spent the time building the right connections and relationships well before the crisis. How the first 3 weeks of the crisis set the stage of whether a leader would succeed? Why the following 90 days won't get any easier?

Meghan was ranked as one of the top 100 female entrepreneurs in Canada by Profit Magazine and was named best holistic nutritionist in 2017 and 2018 by National Nutrition. And what about Metamucil? This episode is powered by BIOHM Health, a leader in gut health with the first line of probiotics and prebiotics to target both bacteria and fungi in the gut.

[embedyt] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uv4orw2MVeA[/embedyt] Meet Our Guest: Teresa Spinelli wasn't destined to lead her family's grocery business. But life takes many turns and the leader is what she became. Born in Edmonton in 1961 Teresa grew up at the Italian Centre Shop, taking her first steps in the pasta isle. By age 13 she was working in the store regularly as a cashier, never dreaming she would one day ascend to the Presidency of the company. In 1983 after successfully graduating from the University of Alberta with a psychology degree her plan was to pursue social work, though admittedly realized social work wasn't for her after completing a work term. “I realized I'd be a horrible social worker because I wanted to take everybody home with me.” Family misfortune changed the course of Teresa's life with the loss of her brother, followed by the passing of her father, Frank Spinelli three years later. “We were a traditional Italian family, and I had a brother, so automatically, because he was the boy, he was going to take the business.” In 2000 Teresa stepped in as the president of the company temporarily; the company having 30 employees and a net worth of 9 million. Teresa believed the Italian Centre had the potential to be bigger and better. With her vision of changing the business from a local grocery store to a major importer and distributor, within a year, she grew the business to 12 million in sales. Today, the Company has grown 8 times with 4 stores (located in Edmonton and Calgary), 509 employees and sales of 64 million. Married to Mike Newberry in 1999, and blessed with son Massimo in 2007 Teresa's business philosophy comes from her dad, “The more you give, the more you get.” Her passion is revitalizing the McCauley community around Little Italy in Edmonton's downtown and volunteering with such organizations as the Italian Chamber of Commerce; Mayor's Task Force on Sustainable Communities, and Edmonton City Manager's Advisory Committee. For Teresa, it's all about people and showing them you love them with a hearty, bountiful meal. “For me, it's not about selling salami. For me, it's about people. The reason I get up in the morning is because I want to grow people.” - Teresa Spinelli Among her notable awards for 10-years running, Teresa has been one of Canada's Top 100 Women Entrepreneurs as ranked by Profit Magazine; the People's Choice Businesswoman of the Year; and has received the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal in recognition of contributions to Canada.

On this episode, Dr.G is joined by Leerom Segal, the co-founder and CEO of Klick and author of the best-selling book, The Decoded Company. His story is anything but usual. Against all odds, he built Klick over 20 years from a scrappy technology company to now one of the world’s largest and most sought after independent creative health agencies. But calling it an agency doesn’t do it justice.  They are out to change the world through the relentless pursuit of awesome. In this episode, we discuss his unlikely rise through grit, persistence and continuous hustle to build one of the most envious companies, his determination to succeed by outworking and outsmarting his competition, his unusual practices to attract the best and brightest talent, and why most organizations today are struggling to adapt because of outdated leadership models. All this and more on today’s episode. Now, That’s Unusual. About Leerom Segal Entrepreneur, humanitarian and philanthropist Leerom Segal is the co-founder and CEO of Klick Health, the world’s largest health agency. He has been named to PROFIT Magazine’s Hall of Fame as the youngest CEO to lead a PROFIT 100 Company and earned the titles of Ernst and Young’s Young Entrepreneur of the Year and Business Development Bank of Canada’s Entrepreneur of the Year. Segal is also co-author of the bestselling book The Decoded Company: Know Your Talent Better Than You Know Your Customers. His story is anything but usual. Segal launched his first company at age 12 and was named CTO of Motion Works Group by the time he was 16. Klick launched in 1997 as a scrappy technology company. Under his leadership, it has grown to be one of the world’s largest and most sought-after independent creative health agencies. But calling it an agency doesn’t do it justice. They are out to change the world through the relentless pursuit of awesome. Known for his unconventional business method, Segal utilizes a data-driven, talent-centric approach to management at Klick, and the company has been recognized by the World Economic Forum as a Global Company to Watch, as well as one of Canada’s 50 Best Managed Companies, 50 Best Employers, Most Admired Cultures and Best Workplaces. Through the Klick Foundation, he and his fellow ‘Klicksters’ have donated over $1.6M to a wide range of charitable initiatives around the world. Key Interview Takeaways If a company can get the culture right, success comes naturally. When talent thrives, clients are happy and they reward the business with loyalty and growth. Embark on the ‘relentless pursuit of awesome’ by asking how to inoculate against the status quo and to build a culture where people understand that whatever greatness was achieved yesterday, it’s no longer good enough. Give talent an intelligence advantage through personalization. Leadership at Klick realized that successful apps take time to understand the customer and personalize based on individual needs, yet businesses remain beholden to one-size-fits-all solutions. They developed their own operating system, Genome, to make tech tools function as a coach and eliminate elements that weren’t saving time. This allows data to act as a ‘sixth sense,’ aiding in decision-making rather than informing after the fact.
