Larry and Cheryl Webster may not be big recording artists or the kind of musicians that sell-out arenas around the world, but they are as important to the music industry and community as anyone that has ever come out of Eastern Kentucky. Their network of contacts and influence put them in the role of linchpin for many mountain and bluegrass musicians through the now six decades the couple has been playing, writing, performing and booking music. It just so happens they were the couple whose Friday night pickin' and grinnin' sessions gave one of our hosts, Jason Falls, his roots in loving roots music. So he ventured home to Pike County, Ky., and invited himself into their kitchen for a chat.  Larry and Cheryl headed up The Mule Band, a traditional folk, mountain and bluegrass group, for years. It has served as the house band, if you will, for Pikeville, Ky.'s annual spring festival called Hillbilly Days, on and off since the late 1970s. Larry would invite promising mountain and bluegrass artists to play the event which became quite an honor for musicians from the genres.  Larry is also a prolific folk and mountain music songwriter with credits on recordings by The Local Honeys, Guy Carawan and Nate Polly among others.  Cheryl is known for her ability to harmonize and comes from an extensive family of musical talent including her cousin Darrell Scott. She tells the story of how his song “You'll never leave Harlan alive” is about their great grandparents. The song had new life injected into its popularity when original recording artist Patty Loveless along with Chris Stapleton performed it at the 2022 CMA Awards. The Websters are also the grandparents of promising fiddle player Ella Webster, the current touring player in Cole Chaney's band.     In a bonus segment, Frank and Falls share a clip from an interview with author Amy Bizzarri, whose latest book The Best Hits on the Blues Highway: Nashville to New Orleans on Route 61 is fantastic.  Frank and Falls also talk about their daughter's recent music activity including Lollapalooza 2024, and the Kentucky Governor's School for the Arts. And shared new music for your listening pleasure in the Pickin' the Grinnin' segment after the interview. Don't forget you can now show your support of the show with Roots Music Rambler's new merch, now available at rootsmusicrambler.com/store. Seth Godin on Discovering True Productivity and Significance in Modern Workplaces

This week, we're revisiting a conversation that left a lasting impact, where I had the honor and privilege of speaking with Seth Godin about his book, The Song of Significance: A New Manifesto for Teams. For most listeners Seth needs no introduction. Seth is perhaps best known for his prolific daily blog, as well as his books Linchpin, Tribes, The Dip and Purple Cow. I've been looking forward to this conversation for a long time now, and Seth of course did not disappoint. In our chat, we unpack the purpose and passion that led Seth to write this impactful book. For anyone familiar with Linchpin, The Song of Significance is, in many ways, the spiritual sequel and companion piece to that book. If Linchpin was all about being indispensable on an individual level, The Song of Significance explores how to work together as a team of Linchpins. This conversation remains as relevant as ever, offering encouragement to anyone feeling anxiety about how their skills or unique voice fit into the modern workforce, or for those considering a freelance or entrepreneurial journey. Seth and I explore how the desire for agency and dignity lies at the core of the modern employee's aspirations. Despite the many innovations and progress since the Industrial Revolution, these two key components have often been overlooked. The purpose of this book, and our discussion, is to help teams and individuals rediscover this dignity and autonomy, reminding people of their unique voice—a voice that no amount of technology, AI, or automation can replace. This is truly a book to be read as a team, fostering discussions and action steps to build a team, organization, or business that empowers and trusts everyone to deliver their best work and harmonize together. This past Sunday our church's normal worship gathering was full of awesome worship to God (with special guests Liam and Madi), scripture reading, a baby dedication, and a great wrap-up for our Linchpins series, but unfortunately the audio didn't work for the live stream. While we can't get any of that back, Trevor and Ryan decided to sit down for a conversation to wrap up the Linchpins sermon series for podcast listeners and people who weren't able to attend on Sunday in person. This is a valuable conversation covering how much intimacy we can gain with God when we make room for God consistently, so if you have any questions or comments about the topic, we'd love to continue the conversation with you in the comments or over email at ryan@kingswaymo.com.

This week, Chris and Johan were joined by Seth Frader-Thompson, founder and president of EnergyHub. We talked about how decarbonizing the US power system by 2035 will require massive load flexibility - on the order of 500 GW. To get there, we need distributed energy resources in nearly every living room and garage to be part of virtual power plants. The key? Building customer-centric flexibility programs that deliver grid reliability, reduce costs for customers, and enable the clean energy transition.

Recently completed a book called Linchpins by Seth Godin...  Basically it provided a blueprint for how to make yourself indispensable in a dispensable world. Look, before I get going here, I believe we all need to realize that each and every one of us is replaceable...  “Uhhh... Professor EB, surely I am not replaceable.  Nobody will ever bring the intelligence, insight and good looks that I bring to your class.”  Well good morning Mr. SuperSoft, as much as I do appreciate your participation, I assure you that although there will never be another Stevie SuperSoft, condescending narcissistic selfish pricks are a dime a dozen and when you are gone, it will be a pleasure to replace you with another A-HOLE that we here at the Daily Hustle will do our best to save from the jaws of arrogance...  Ok, back to Linchpins...  Godin says that linchpins do 2 vital things for an organization: Exert emotional labor Make a map  Unless we are making an emotional investment into our work and providing a clear course of action, there is no way we will ever be perceived as indispensable... Our ability to go above and beyond the call of duty by directing our passion with purpose is what will ultimately lead to displaying one or more of these 7 linchpin abilities Godin lays out…  Provide a unique interface between members of the organization  Deliver unique creativity  Manage a situation of great complexity  Lead customers  Inspire the staff  Provide deep domain knowledge  Possess a unique talent   I really don't think one of the above is too much to ask out of any of us, but the only way one of these 7 abilities will ever come to fruition is by making an emotional investment while maintaining a clear vision going forward...  Simply put... PASSION WITH PURPOSE is what will eventually allow us to be true linchpins…  -EB   P.S. Was just listening to a book called Linchpins and author Seth Godin talked about the importance of appropriately dealing with fatigue... No matter who you are, we all are going to get worn out through the race of life at one point or another, but those who are able to best endure the inevitable fatigue that sets in will ultimately prevail to live the most efficient and effective lives... Whether it was the grind of a 162-game baseball season, an Ironman Triathlon, the Western States 100, The Let Them Play Triathlon Across America or the 24 Hour Speed Golf World Record, fatigue played a major role in the overall success, or lack thereof in each event...   What I learned is that it's not whether or not we get fatigued, it's how we are able to respond... In baseball, we call it the dog days of August but realistically each of these events had their own dog days that I had to deal with head on... There were times when I became so overwhelmed by the physical and mental fatigue that I literally had to crawl to the finish, completely beaten down on all fronts...  Then there were times I would recognize the fatigue but continue to charge forward with the simple understanding that it would be painful but I was going to embrace it.  The ironic thing is that whenever I took the “embrace it” approach, the pain would miraculously go away and I would always find a second wind that would have me FLYING till the end. When I first got into triathlon, I did a camp with world class professional triathlete Linsey Corbin... A few months later, I was about to toe the line of my first Ironman and received a text from Linsey the night before:  “When it starts to hurt, pick up the pace!!!”  I originally thought it was a sick joke but ironically, whenever I have been able to apply it, the Linsey Corbin mantra has served as the ultimate fatigue buster through many of my ultra endurance endeavors...  Bottom line is that fatigue comes for all of us, yet the ones who figure out how to embrace it and then pick up the pace are the ones who ultimately win the race... -EB   P.S. It also defines it as a person or thing vital to an enterprise or organization. The key word here is vital. The pin is vital to keep the wheels on the axle. The person is vital to an organization. What's this have to do with raising kids? Everything! Do you think we're developing linchpins at school? Are linchpins naturally conditioned in society? No, mediocrity is! As parents, we have an opportunity to raise little linchpins. Vital little humans to lead. Lead organizations. Lead their families. Lead their community. Lead their society. What started as a passion project, turned into a real successful business that has impacted hundreds of thousands of people. Also, we have some really exciting news to announce – for the first time ever, we will be building the Intelligent Change Team in Los Angeles, California, and we're looking for great people like you to join us. Full show notes: https://www.ikonns.com/podcast/59 It all started with the Five Minute Journal, our best-selling gratitude journal that has helped over 500,000 people become happier since launching in 2013. We've since also created the Productivity Planner and the Five Minute Journal for Kids, and, we are sure, it's only the beginning.    So, in today's episode we wanted to take you behind the scenes and share the story of Intelligent Change: how it was created, why it was created, what is the vision of the company, and everything in between. Recently, our company has experienced some changes which, in fact, creates lots of exciting opportunities for you. So, make sure to listen to the end of this episode, if you are potentially open to work with us and Intelligent Change. This is the journey you're going to hear:   Inspiration for creating a gratitude journal Building a new partnership with UJ Ramdas What it's like to be a lifestyle entrepreneur How and when the idea of The Five Minute Journal was born What it takes to start a business of creating a product (step-by-step system) Magical combination of Tim Ferris and Mimi Ikonn The incredible impact of The Five Minute Journal Creating a movement and a community of mind-alike people The reason we sold Luxy Hair The truth about 50-50 business partnerships The separation process How does it feel like to start from a clean slate The intention of Intelligent Change as a company The vital role of a new team Also, this episode is a good case study for all of you who are thinking to start their own business. Here are our lessons, observations and some key business advice:   – Whenever you are approaching somebody, don't come from a place of taking, come from a place of delivering unique value and giving. – Having free time and just making money for the sake of money gets boring really fast. The intention should be not only to sell and make a profit, but to share and provide value.  – The reality of starting a business is that it's going to be difficult. And in order to go through the difficulty, you better be interested in what you are doing, because pretty soon you will burn out, and it will consume you.  – The best way to learn is to do. – Should you ever want to start a business or create a product, or provide any service, the goal has always to be to create things that you genuinely want to create and have in your personal life, because that way you will never ever have to sell it, but to use it, and people will be inspired if this is something they actually need in their lives.  – How big of the impact you can make with the small things if you genuinely and authentically share what works for you. – To be an entrepreneur means to have freedom of following through your vision and fulfilling that potential. It really comes down to your values and priorities.  – In every business you need two components: you need the vision and you need the integration.  “We are so excited to be in a position of putting together like-minded people and creating something with meaning and purpose from the genuine intention to deliver the value to this world. It's not about profit, it's about delivering unique value and different experience to other humans beings, and creating the greater community of like-minded people”   And, finally, BIG NEWS: now that we own 100% of Intelligent Change, what we are going to do in the next year is establishing an office in Los Angeles, Santa Monica, working on Intelligent Change future vision and hiring our next Linchpins to join us on our journey to change lives and make a real difference.    The thing we are looking for isn't your education, it's not even your experience, it's the sparkle of enthusiasm in your eyes. Are you excited about this opportunity? Do you want to be a part of this team that makes a difference? That's what we value the most. For us, it's not about micromanaging, it's about leading and encouraging people to lead in their position, whatever that position may be.    If you are open to learn and become the best you can be – you can apply to all the positions that are available right now.    If you feel you can bring unique value to Intelligent Change, we are open to hear from you - reach out to us and name your position. Also, if you know somebody who will be interested in becoming a part of Intelligent Change, this is a great time to encourage them to apply for the role they have been dreaming about.    Books we've mentioned in this episode: The Happiness Advantage by Shawn Achor Tools of Titans by Tim Ferris Linchpin by Seth Godin

I’m a firm believer that all problems can be solved with the right peer group. Hosting dinners and unique live experiences is my favourite way to seed new relationships and re-invest in existing ones. To date I’ve done hundreds of dinners in cities all over North America but in full transparency, I was a complete wreck while planning my first dinner so many years ago. In this episode of Community Made I’m going to share some of the key takeaways from my book Mastermind Dinners: Build Lifelong Relationships by Connecting Experts, Influencers, and Linchpins and provide an in-depth play by play of what went into the planning of one of my most recent dinners, giving you the playbook on how to become a super-connecting catalyst in your own community. Almost every time someone has helped me overcome an obstacle, opened a door of opportunity, or made a profound introduction, it’s been someone that I originally connected with at a live event. Investing your time, money, and energy into attending events is an absolutely critical part of building new relationships and growing your network. We hear it all too often when we turn on the news today, jobs getting shipped out to other countries and millions find themselves out of work. Earlier in the century, during the industrial revolution, work changed dramatically. The high skilled work that dominated the century prior started being replaced by processes and machines. And so came the production line and factory mindset where productions were split into simple processes that even the most unskilled people could do. This drove the cost of labor low and was extremely profitable for companies, but created the problem we have today of people loosing jobs to outsourcing and more and more robots. Even previously thought to outsource proof white collar careers like banking jobs, assistants, stock brokers, analyst, those who just show up and followed instructions are finding their hours cut and having their jobs replaced and outsourced. Best selling author and one of my favorite marketing thought leaders offer us the idea, that to be irreplaceable, we need to be indispensable and remarkable, or what he calls the Linchpin. Seth says “The only way to get what you’re worth is to stand out, to exert indispensable, and to produce interactions that organizations and people care deeply about.” Linchpins don't need a set of instructions, they create opportunities and apply their vision without being told what to do. They humanize and connect their artistic problem solving to their daily work. We all have what it takes to bring this out and become a linchpin, we simply need to fully understand what goes into being a linchpin and start applying it to our works today. Allow me to leave you with this In today’s modern workplace, being a good team member, following instructions and being able to do things that everyone else can makes you very replaceable. The key to succeed and get the best jobs today, we need to become indespensable and be that linchpin for every company. We need to be the catalyst for members of our company, deliver our domain knowledge and contribute generously. Manage complex situation with clear judgements, lead our customers and inspire our staff. We cant allow our lizard brain and fear stop us from getting out of our comfort zone and embracing our inner artist in solving problems. We need to lay our heart on the line and make our work a platform for our art and get things done outstandingly and become an indespensable linchpin.
