Jason and I begin by talking about the Mashable Mixer in Atlanta. The Social Fresh Conference was created because there wasn't a conference focusing on social media and marketing. Jason worked successful advertising agencies from 2006 to 2008. He became the social media go-to-guy, but was frustrated that his ideas never got off the ground. People didn't trust social marketing yet. He started his own agency, sold it, and he began consulting about social media. Social Fresh was supposed to be a one or two-time event. He made enough money to roll it into other conferences across the country. In New Business Networking, Jason said the number one thing he has learned about organizing conferences is the value of partnerships. His team always identity the organizations and local influencers before launching their conference in a new city. We discuss affiliate marketing for conferences. Jason shares how he finds great speakers for his conferences. Learn to listen to people first. Give value before you ask for it. Pick one thing people can help you with and talk about that one thing when networking at conferences. Follow up is key. Keep notes through a conference. Write down your "ah ha" moments from the conversation you have, about the people you meet and what you learn from the presentations. Set reminders to check those notes again in the future. In Nashville on February 24th? Don't miss my podcasting workshop, Start Podcasting Today. Save $100 before February 1st. Be mindful of the people you definitely want to follow up with. Ian and I begin by talking about Irish people, naturally (I lived in Ireland for a few years). After 18 months of launching, RazorSocial.com was receiving over 100,000 unique visits per month. Pick your blog niche that you have a strong interest and knowledge in, and one that isn't really occupied by anyone else. Ian created a list of 100 people he wanted to be friends with. He left to the States every month to attend conferences and network to promote his blog. The relationships with the right people were more important than the writing. Without the relationships nothing would have happened. Ian's focus is always to determine how he can help someone. The more you help people, the more people want to help you. Mike Stelzner let Ian provide guest blog posts on Social Media Examiner, which led people to his site. Ian wrote guest posts on as many influential blogs as possible (close to 100). You always want to get people back to your website. As a small business you don't have time to be everywhere. Get one channel working for you first. SocialBro - provides really good filters to find people on Twitter. Ian wrote a blog post on a topic and used SocialBro to search bios for influential people who would be interested in his blog topic. He then reached out to the top ten most influential people to share his blog post via scheduled tweets. Most of the content Ian shares is other people's content first. Ian uses Hootsuite and Bulk Buffer with Buffer to schedule tweets. Ian managed different software, customer support and development teams. He has always been good at managing different teams of people and building relationships with each person. Fun Fact: He sold property in Bulgaria. When you reach out to an influencer and ask for something, you're the same as 99 out of 100 people. If you really focus on how you can help them with your first interaction they will remember you. How can you stand out as an individual, and how you can you really help that other person - that makes a difference. Ian shares how he balances his time. Entrepreneurs need to be more productive and not think they must work longer hours. If you set your deadlines and be ruthless with them, you will get the work done. Erik Fisher submitted a question “What's a good balance between finding new tools and leaning new tools?” (My interview with Erik here) When you become known in a certain area, the information finds it's way to you. Entrepreneur on Fire (EOF) has over 800,000 unique listens each month and over 9 million downloads to date. John Lee Dumas signed up for military at 17, entered the Armed Forces at 22, and became a captain. He served thirteen months in Iraq. He went to law school and worked in corporate finance, but hated it and quit. He also worked in commercial and residential real estate, but quit those too. At 32, he had the idea for a podcast and launched EOF in 2012. The show won best of iTunes in 2013. It took a lot of failures, quitting, and mistakes, and a lot of investing in himself. My interview on EOF for your listening pleasure. John Lee explains how he is able to produce a new episode every day. He is a firm believer in getting more stuff down before 9 am than most people. He learned this in the Army, who's motto is, "We get more done before 9 am then most people do all day." There is opportunity in voids not being filled, especially when people think it can't be done. He records eight, back-to-back, interviews one day a week. Networking has been everything! Entrepreneur on Fire has turned into a networking machine. He does eight other interviews each week for other podcasts (like this one). John Lee belongs to a small mastermind he meets with each week. They also do a quarterly retreat. It's important to have a mentor who is already in the place you aspire to be. As a podcaster you can grow authority in your niche. You can garner credibility from an audience who knows, likes, and trusts you. He refers to his audiences as Fire Nation. John Lee created a private mastermind called Fire Nation Elite, which is a five-figure revenue generator per month. He has also created a private group called Podcaster's Paradise with 1,300 members who aspire to create, grow and monetize their podcasts. All you need is 1,000 people. You can use it to send emails later, mark emails to reappear in your inbox later, and remind you to follow up if you don't hear back from the recipient. Boomerang came from personal pain. Alex was working at Analog Devices. He was responsible for making the Input Select button ten cents cheaper on HD TVs. He created Boomerang, because he had a hard time keeping up with emails from his team members. He began working on an automatic semantic search engine, but it was too geeky to work. Tim Ferris swears by the Email Game. Alex explains what it is and why you should try it. I love it too. Email is the only thing that's compatible with everybody's system. Zvi began as a consultant for high-end start-ups, government and VC firms. He had a good reputation, but he was terrible at business development. The concept of staying in touch is not something new. They are just providing a better tool to do this. Zvi said, "The number one reason people fail to network is the simple fact that they don't do it. If you make a consistent effort, even something as simple as sending an email a day, it's a game changer.” from Frank Gruber's Startup Mixology event in DC. (Video) He was so introverted, he wanted to go home on weekends during college. Zvi wanted to get involved in a start-up, so he had to start meeting people. He did so over coffee. He was offered a job as a CTO. It wouldn't have happened if he didn't build the relationships first. He grew a strong business without advertising. “Forget the name of the company, it was me they wanted to talk to.” People do business with those they know, like and trust. Instead of walking out with ten business cards, walk out with one really good relationship. The biggest differentiator between a good networker and a bad networker is whether you do it at all. His DC Tech Meetup draws 1,000 people each month! "A rising tide lifts all boats." - John F Kennedy. The number one most important thing in networking is to just do it. “Give more than you receive.” The simple phrase, "How can I help you?" is one of the most powerful things he has learned over the years. During this time she realized she was ready for a change. She was spending a lot of time volunteering and engaging with a community that had nothing to do with her work. She was connecting with people who organize TED and Ignite events, and using social media. It was time to focus her energy on getting paid to do the work she loves to do. She found the job at MaRS via Twitter. She worked with NetCom Canada years earlier. The former president Ron Close, eventually ended up being an entrepreneur-in-residence at MaRS. John Jantsch is best known for his brand Duct Tape Marketing. Huffington Post calls him one of the top 100 “Must Follow” on Twitter, and Forbes named Duct Tape Marketing one of the 100 Best Websites for Entrepreneurs. His podcast was called a "must listen" by Fast Company magazine. Check out his books: * The Referral Engine: Teaching Your Business to Market Itself* Duct Tape Marketing Revised & Updated: The World's Most Practical Small Business Marketing Guide* The Commitment Engine: Making Work Worth It* Duct Tape Selling: Think Like a Marketer-Sell Like a Superstar One of my favorite quotes from John is, "How you build trust in business, listen before you talk. Give before you take. Teach before you sell." I believe the same can be said for building your professional network. Talking about social media, blogging, sales, networking and more. NBN10 Show Notes Listen to episode 10 in iTunes or Stitcher. Please take a moment to leave me an audio comment. Record one now. How Duct Tape Marketing came to be. John shares the challenges small businesses face in online marketing. John has been blogging since 2002/2003 at Duct Tape Marketing. It seemed like a simple way for him to create lots of content. The 4 reasons you should create a blog: 1. It makes you easier to find.2. It gives you a platform to demonstrate your expertise.3. It makes you show up higher in search engines.4. It gives you and your customers, prospects and partners content you can share. Consistently producing valuable content has to be part of it. It doesn't matter what you put it on or what you call it. Ninety percent of the world needs a platform and a tool to make it easy to create and to produce content their prospects and clients want to find. We talk about John's new book, Duct Tape Selling: Think Like a Marketer-Sell Like a Superstar. John calls social networks “out posts”. You need to view them as ways to drive people back to your blog or newsletter. You have to always believe you are renting the space of social networks. Building a firm foundation is important. We talk about time management and family. Check out my interview with Mark Schaefer about this too. If sales people want to survive, they are going to have to start learning how to use social media in a more effective way. They need to start to produce content that builds individual authority and expertise. “Marketing is ruining social media.” John's current favorite app is Word Swag - Cool fonts, typography generator, creative quotes, and text over pic editor. I've been using it to create the quote graphics for the show. "Behind every success business, there's an entrepreneur who's pretty sure she's screwing it up." IMAGE.
