If you thought Drive was a stylish slow burn, this one cranks up the stillness, strips back the dialogue, and drops you into a hallucinatory revenge opera that's equal parts mesmerizing and maddening.Ryan Gosling stars as Julian, a quiet, emotionally blank drug smuggler running a Muay Thai gym as a front in Bangkok. When his volatile brother Billy is murdered for committing an unspeakable crime, their monstrous mother Crystal (Kristin Scott Thomas) arrives in town demanding vengeance. Julian is reluctantly pulled into a spiral of violence and surreal symbolism, facing off against Chang (Vithaya Pansringarm), a sword-wielding police lieutenant who dispenses his own brutal, godlike justice. Refn drenches the screen in glowing reds and deep shadows, pairing every scene with an eerie, droning score from Cliff Martinez. The film is light on plot and even lighter on dialogue—Gosling speaks fewer than 20 lines—but the atmosphere is thick enough to cut with a katana.Only God Forgives is a fever dream of a film—icy cold yet visually scorching. It's like a revenge thriller that's been put through a Lynchian blender, leaving behind a hushed, haunted meditation on masculinity, vengeance, and judgement. If you want action, go elsewhere. If you want mood and madness, step right in.

Degenerates Andy S and Brandon Bombay kick things into fifth gear as they talk about the modern crime classic, 'Drive.' Bombay recalls how when the movie started permeating into popular culture he bonded with a stripper who loved the film and its indelible soundtrack. Then the fellas dissect Nicolas Winding Refn's gorgeously shot movie which borrowed heavily from crime films from the '70s and '80s, and transposed those aesthetics into the modern era. Arguably one of the great style over substance movies of this decade, the film stars a magnetically brooding Ryan Gosling, and is buoyed by not only an infectious soundtrack, but a mesmerizing score from Cliff Martinez. Those soothing visuals and sounds are juxtaposed against jarring violence which would go on to become a staple in Refn's later works.

A parte questo, godetevi "Too Old to Die Young". Before he played Ken, Ryan Gosling portrayed a nameless driver in Nicolas Winding Refn's 2011 film based on the James Sallis novel. When a Hollywood stuntman who moonlights as a getaway driver gets romantically involved with his neighbor, he is drawn into a mobster's plot and must use all his skills to stay alive. With an all-star cast including Carey Mulligan, Oscar Isaac, Bryan Cranston, Christina Hendricks, Ron Perlman, and Albert Brooks, the film won Refn the Best Director award at Cannes. Opening in second place at the box office, the fim has gone on to become a mainstay in internet movie culture - the definition of “kino.” Now we're donning our Scorpion jackets and stepping on the gas for Drive! On today's episode, Michael and podcaster Mark Krawczyk discuss the film that put Nicolas Winding Refn on the map -- DRIVE. While DRIVE is far from Refn's first film or his first success, it is the film that made him known on a whole larger level and is probably his biggest mainstream success to date. 'John Wick' franchise to headline Lionsgate's San Diego Comic-Con PanelsThe world-famous San Diego Comic-Con is facing a major existential crisis this year as several major studios including Marvel, Lucas Films, Disney, Netflix, and HBO have announced they won't feature any panels at this year's event. The writer's strike in the US and the potentially forthcoming strike by the actors are cited as one of the major reasons studios have decided to skip the comic-con this year. However, Lionsgate will have a panel at the event with the John Wick prequel series The Continental to headline. Warner Bros and DC are yet to confirm whether they will skip this year's event. A Twitter handle uploaded the entire film in HD and received over 1.7 million views before Twitter eventually took down the video. DC's new era under James Gunn has begun with back-to-back flops, and two more DC films, Blue Beetle and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, are scheduled to release in 2023. Bronson is a 2008 British biographical prison action thriller film directed by Nicolas Winding Refn, based on a script written by Refn and Brock Norman Brock. The film stars Tom Hardy as Michael Peterson, known from 1987 as Charles Bronson. The film follows the life of this prisoner, considered Britain's most violent criminal, who has been responsible for a dozen or so cases of hostage taking while incarcerated. He was given the name Charles Bronson by his fight promoter, for his bare-knuckle fighting years.Born into a respectable middle-class family, Peterson became known as one of the United Kingdom's most dangerous prisoners. Because of his violence, Bronson was repeatedly put into isolation or solitary confinement, which may have contributed to his emotional problems.
The second film in our Stranger Than Fiction cycle is Nicolas Winding Refn's left field take on bio pics, 2008's Bronson.Special Guest: Katey Stoetzel is co-founder and TV Editor for InBetweenDrafts. She hosts the “House of the Dragon After Show” podcast and can be read on various other places like Inverse and Screen Speck. Refn's conspicuous filmmaking style lends itself well to the crazy and violent life of Charles Bronson aka Britain's "most violent prisoner." Shot as a performance art piece rather than a narrative film, Bronson was certainly a calling card for both Refn and the magnificent lead performance of Tom Hardy. Looking back on the film some fifteen years later, the boldness feels oversaturated and worn, like an overly compressed mp3. It blasts loud, but the dynamic range is so blown out that little emotional timbre is left. Especially troubling is the tightrope Refn chooses to snap in two instead of traverse. Refn claims he is making a movie about man he knows nothing about. Charles Bronson is a real person who did very awful things to real people. Refn gives us a barometer with which to measure the level of exploitation that true life films can conjure. Here lies the bottom. For our chaser film, we lounge with Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg in 2004's The Terminal, a comfy mid-aughts dramedy filled with max schmaltz and min edge.

Refn will kontrovers sein. All four of them have different responses and viewpoints to the movie! They discuss Refn's career and directing choices, the stunning visuals and use of color and lighting, if it has any deeper themes and meanings, among many other aspects of the film. They also talk about who or what the Neon Demon is and compare and contrast their opinions. Aaron and Derek can't sing, dance, write and have no real talent. V.P. and Shelby are the only thing.
In this episode, we dive into the world of The Neon Demon, a film directed by the highly regarded Nicolas Winding Refn. Known for his visually striking and often brutal films, Refn brings his signature style to this dark and twisted tale of ambition and beauty.Set in the world of high fashion, the film follows young model Jesse as she navigates the cutthroat world of modeling in Los Angeles. But as she rises to the top, she finds herself in a dangerous game of cat and mouse with her fellow models, who will stop at nothing to take her down.Despite its stunning visuals and hypnotic soundtrack, The Neon Demon is a film that has divided audiences. Some have praised its bold and ambitious storytelling, while others have criticized its slow pacing and lack of depth. But no matter what side of the fence you fall on, there's no denying the film's ability to enthrall and disturb in equal measure.Join us as we discuss the film's themes, its strengths and weaknesses, and what makes it such a unique and polarizing piece of cinema. Whether you're a fan of Refn's work or just looking to hear more about this controversial film, this episode has something for everyone.Like the show? The Secret Movie Club Team (Connor Lloyd Crews, Edwin Gomez, Alex Olivier, Daniel Ott, and Craig Hammill) reviews Danish filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn's 2011 cult-hit neon-noir, Drive, and the rest of Refn's filmography! Drive is one of Alex's favorite films, but he's less hot on some of Refn's other works. Edwin loves Bronson. Craig defends the violent and divisive Only God Forgives. Daniel predicts a resurgence in popularity of the Miles Teller-starring Too Old to Die Young in a post-Top Gun: Maverick world. Connor contributes.
Volumes 6 + 7 of TOO OLD TO DIE YOUNG try Marten's patience, while Jacob argues it's where Nic Refn's epic act of prog rock cinema really starts to congeal into something all its own. As an added bonus: Refn's doom metal Viking opus, VALHALLA RISING.
The boys take a break from their usual Season Three shenanigans to deliver a four part, in-depth dissection of Nicolas Winding Refn's thirteen-hour dronecore L.A. crime opus, TOO OLD TO DIE YOUNG. Also up under the SH microscope: Refn's breakout work: the Tom Hardy prion brawl picture, BRONSON (2008).

Afsnit 380. Anders Refn!
On the 10 year anniversary of the release of a film widely beloved by filmbros and Film Twitter obsessives, Mike and Nate take a look at the understated, sleek, and stylish approach that Nicolas Winding Refn took with his modern masterpiece, DRIVE (2011). We discuss the impact this film had on the careers of Refn and Ryan Gosling, its current reputation as the filmbro's introtroductory movie, the film's heavily action-packed marketing campaign, and one woman's insane biblical mission to get her revenge on the filmmakers for deceiving her. Did one of the world's boldest and most polarizing working filmmakers release a 13-hour movie last year for it to garner almost no attention? On today's episode, I'm joined by writer/director Daniel Muller, to talk about Nicolas Winding Refn's magnum opus neo-noir about Trump's America that, for reasons discussed, seems to have been already discarded. We also talk about the comic book writing of the show's co-creator Ed Brubaker, Refn's filmmaking similarities to Stanley Kubrick, his movie curation website #byNWR, the parallels between the show and modern video game auteurism, its Lynchian sense of impending and effective dread, and the absurdity of “fascism is goodism.”All 10 episodes of Too Old to Die Young are available exclusively on Amazon Prime.Daniel Muller is a graduate of the American Film Institute and currently lives in Los Angeles.
