Face the Music: An Electric Light Orchestra Song-By-Song Podcast
After Public Image Ltd's second album Metal Box (known as Second Edition in the United States,) bass player Jah Wobble left. John Lydon and Keith Levene continued on, with drummer Martin Atkins, for the extremely experimental The Flowers of Romance. Despite being as non-commercial as possible, it was still a modest hit in the UK and a few other places around the world. It would also be the last album featuring the original band members.
In this episode of MyMusic, Graham Coath welcomes back the brilliant Harry Stafford, songwriter and creative force behind Inca Babies, for another deep and wide-ranging conversation on music, memory, and reinvention.Harry shares the inside story on Reincarnation, the band's upcoming album that breathes new life into old tracks from their 80s catalogue — reworked, reimagined, and remixed for today, while keeping the raw spirit intact. Expect dub-infused rhythms, modern production techniques, and a beautiful blend of nostalgia and fresh creativity — including a rare guest appearance from the late, great Keith Levene. We talk:

Rockshow Episode 206 Public Image LtdPublic Image Ltd (PiL) is a post-punk band formed in 1978 by John Lydon (formerly Johnny Rotten of the Sex Pistols) after the breakup of the Sex Pistols. The group is renowned for its experimental approach, blending elements of punk, dub, dance, and avant-garde music. Lydon's provocative lyrics and distinctive vocal style have been central to the band's identity.Key Features and History:1.Formation and Early Years:•After leaving the Sex Pistols, Lydon teamed up with guitarist Keith Levene (formerly of The Clash) and bassist Jah Wobble.•Their debut album, First Issue (1978), introduced a stark departure from punk's raw simplicity, featuring a more experimental, bass-heavy sound.2.Breakthrough Album: Metal Box (1979):•Metal Box, their second album, is often hailed as a post-punk masterpiece. It featured hypnotic rhythms, dissonant guitars, and dub-inspired bass lines, with songs like “Death Disco” and “Albatross.”•The album was originally released in a metal film canister, emphasizing their avant-garde ethos.3.Lineup Changes:•PiL has gone through numerous lineup changes over the years, with Lydon being the only consistent member. Key collaborators have included Martin Atkins (drums) and later musicians like Bruce Smith and Lu Edmonds.4.Musical Evolution:•Over the decades, PiL has experimented with a wide range of styles, from danceable grooves on albums like Album (1986) to a more stripped-down rock approach on later works.•Their hit “Rise” (1986) remains one of their most accessible songs, with the refrain “Anger is an energy” becoming iconic.5.Hiatus and Reformation:•After releasing That What Is Not (1992), the band went on hiatus as Lydon pursued other projects.•PiL reformed in 2009 and released new material, including This is PiL (2012) and What the World Needs Now… (2015).6.Legacy:•PiL is credited with influencing numerous genres and artists, from post-punk to industrial and alternative rock.•Their emphasis on innovation and boundary-pushing has solidified their reputation as one of the most daring and original bands of their era.Notable Songs:“Public Image”“Death Disco”“Rise”“This is Not a Love Song”“Flowers of Romance”PiL remains a vital force in music, with Lydon continuing to challenge norms and redefine his artistic output.https://www.pilofficial.com/https://www.facebook.com/share/17tcHb1i8G/?mibextid=LQQJ4dhttps://www.instagram.com/pilofficial?igsh=MmQ0ajVibTA2N3Ixhttps://x.com/pilofficial?s=21&t=Mzw5de5zsR-SDDbhyzH0Lghttps://youtube.com/@pilofficial?si=BcHd6fXVRXQxQfrb#PublicImageLtd#PiL#JohnLydon#PostPunk#ExperimentalMusic#MetalBox#AngerIsAnEnergy#Rise#ThisIsNotALoveSong#PostPunkLegend#AvantGardeMusic#PunkRockHistory#DubInfluence#80sMusic#MusicInnovation#AlternativeMusicIconsPlease follow us on Youtube,Facebook,Instagram,Twitter,Patreon and at www.gettinglumpedup.comhttps://linktr.ee/RobRossiGet your T-shirt at https://www.prowrestlingtees.com/gettinglumpedupAnd https://www.bonfire.com/store/getting-lumped-up/Subscribe to the channel and hit the like button This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/rob-rossi/support https://www.patreon.com/Gettinglumpedup
Generous with his time, expansive with his bass playing, and one of the funniest people I've ever spoken with, Jah Wobble sits down with a couple of his favorite basses to discuss the gestalt of his 45 plus years as a bass man and band leader. Musical instigator for the first (and best) couple of albums by John Lydon's post-Sex Pistols combo Public Image Ltd, Jah has gone on to create a massive and impossible-to-classify body of work in the ensuing decades. He's coming back to these shores for a few dates this summer to revisit PiL's most lasting document, Metal Box, reinterpreting it for a new era with his long-time bandmates. If they're coming anywhere near you, you'd be crazy not to go! A (relatively) in-depth analysis of the English post-punk band Public Image Ltd. in (just over) fifteen minutes. In this episode I am in conversation with Dr. Andrew Webber.Public Image Ltd. (or PIL) are an English post-punk rock band formed by John Lydon (previously of the Sex Pistols), guitarist Keith Levene (one of the original members of The Clash) bassist Jah Wobble (who cut his teeth in the band) and drummer Jim Walker. The group's line-up has changed frequently over the past few decades with Lydon being the only constant member.Public Image Ltd. released their eleventh studio album End of World in August 2023.I saw Public Image at Poole Arts Centre in November 1983. My lasting memory is when Lydon appeared on stage wearing a large, cobalt blue coat. I wanted that coat. After the first song (Public Image) he threw it into the crowd so I lunged for it. Everybody did the same and I watched in horror as it was wrenched from my grip and ripped to pieces. I hope you enjoy this episode.Mathew Woodall

Keith Levene sadly passed away in his home in Norfolk on 11 November 2022, aged 65. He had been battling liver cancer. He was a hugely influential figure on the early London punk explosion. What set him apart from many of his peers, was in a scene based around a DIY- play three chord ethos, Keith really could play. A gifted guitarist, he liked to experiment and push the envelope. In the summer of 1976, he was a founding member of The Clash. However, shortly after recruiting Joe Strummer, Keith left the band. After the Sex Pistols imploded in 1978, John Lydon asked Keith to join him and Jah Wobble to former Public Image Limited. Keith was in PiL for five years, in which time the band released what is widely regarded as some of the most influential material of the time. Including, Metal Box which is considered by many to be a post punk classic. When I heard of Keith's death, I had a dig into my audio archives and found an in-depth interview with him recorded in 2013. At the time Keith was living in the United States. The recording was broadcast on Fuzzbox my late-night punk & ska show on the sadly missed Pure 107.8FM in Stockport. It's basically the same format as a Fuzzcast episode, a punk rock life story. Keith has a lot to talk about - His fall out with John Lydon, how he persuaded Joe Strummer to join the Clash, Sid Vicious, Bernie Rhodes, Jah Wobble, teaching Viv Albertine to play guitar. It's all here. So hopefully you will enjoy.

This is a deep look at the creative forces that have left the world in the past year. We've included figures from all sorts of creative pursuits! Whether aged and iconic, after long illness or suddenly shocking, we feel the loss of those with whom we've shared something. In this case...it's music, something so integral to our lives. 2022 not only continued a dreary trend that we noticed a few years back, this year took it an unreal level. This is also an exercise in remembering what we had in those who've died.

Drawing on Jamaican dub, progressive rock, and outsider art traditions, Public Image Ltd was a band much more than the sum of its parts. Formed by John Lydon—shedding the "Johnny Rotten" persona he utilized with the Sex Pistols—along with bassist Jah Wobble, drummer Jim Walker, former Clash member Keith Levene, who passed away on November 11, 2022), the band's eponymous debut single hit the charts in October 1978. Dropping the needle on this strident and stark recording, John and Marc dig in on its attendant Beeheartisms, uncompromising art rock ethos, and Lydon's remarkable vocal performance. About The Spindle: The 7-inch record isn't just a format—it's an art form. On each episode of The Spindle podcast, music writer Marc Masters (Pitchfork, The Wire, Bandcamp) and music historian (and music maker) John Howard dive into a great 7-inch, dissecting its background, impact, and the reasons why it stands out as a small plastic piece of music history. What's your favorite 7″? Si & Veronica are having a long day for episode 240! We are back at two episodes a week for the penultimate week of Paradise. The mood on the beach is similar to ours with everyone still reeling after Rodney's departure, making it especially hard for Mara to elbow her way into giving a date card out. The cougar claws come out between her and Florence, but Flo snags her baby man Justin back. Kate spends half of the first night shit talking Logan yet gets upset when he says she's critical of him. Ency and Lindsey arrive to take some men on a double date but it ends up being just a date between Ency and Andrew after Logan has to turn Lindsey down by demand of Kate. Gabby and Rachel make an appearance on the beach to spill some tea and just bring their bitterness out on Logan. The dumbest fight in the history of fights breaks out between Genevieve and Aaron, but the ole “let me pack my bags” trick works in their favor to stay together. Becca and Thomas come down to the beach to invite everyone to a Sadie Hawkins dance that turns into a blow up of the Andrew, Ency, Jessenia love triangle with all three of them going home. (Bachelor talk ends at time marker 28m:52s) Sad news with some elder stars' deaths this past week with John Aniston and Keith Levene of the Clash, respectively. Jay Leno suffered some major burns from a gasoline accident with his cars. Pete Davidson might be adding another top tier hottie to his dating list with EmRata. The Sexiest Man Alive is off the market… and perhaps has been for a little over a year. Vee went “Yikes!” to Nikita Dragun being held in a men's prison as a transwomen… and also “Yikes!” to her disrespectful behavior that landed her in handcuffs. Content warning: This episode contains discussion of domestic abuse and violence against women (33:50–37:42). In this episode, we talk to the amazing Adele Bertei about her career as a singer, songwriter and the author of two terrific books, Peter & the Wolves & the new Why Labelle Matters. Starting with her wild life as a gay teenager in Cleveland, Ohio, we hear about her friend & mentor Peter Laughner, founder member of Pere Ubu and a tragically self-destructive troubadour who died back in 1977.Adele then talks us through her move to New York's East Village and her participation in the city's No Wave punk-funk scene as a member of James White & the Contortions — and as the leader of the all-girl Bloods. This leads on to discussion of ZE Records & August "Kid Creole" Darnell, audio clips of whom we hear in a 2016 conversation with Larry Jaffee... which in turn takes us on to Adele's hymn of love for Labelle, the trailblazing trio who morphed from '60s girl group into '70s Afrofuturists. RBP's co-hosts ask Adele about the group's manager Vicki Wickham (hear Vicki's own RBP podcast episode) and about Laura Nyro, Bobby Womack's Poet II, and female power & resistance in the decades before #MeToo.Finally, after noting the passing of Sally Grossman — widow of Bob Dylan's manager Albert & the "lady in red" on the cover of Bob's Bringing It All Back Home — Mark rounds up the highlights of his recent additions to the RBP Library, including Richard Goldstein's review of The Band's Big Pink, Philip Elwood's prescient 1970 appreciation of a young Bruce Springsteen playing live in San Francisco & the recently-recruited Maureen O'Grady interviewing new Stones guitarist Mick Taylor. Jasper takes us out with thoughts on pieces about white appropriation of Black soul, plus an underwhelming 2000 "chart battle" between (insert polite cough) Westlife & Spice Girls...Many thanks to special guest Adele Bertei. Why Labelle Matters is published by UT Press and Peter & the Wolves by Smog Veil.Pieces discussed: Nona Hendryx, Labelle, Bobby Womack, August Darnell audio, Sally Grossman, Woodstock, Pere Ubu/Devo, Kid Creole, Chris Farlowe, The Monkees, The Band, Janis Joplin, ZZ Top, Love's Alone Again Or, Mick Taylor, Steel Mill, Ian Dury, Keith Levene, Millie Jackson, Screaming Lord Sutch, Westlife vs. Spice Girls, Le Tigre and Lily Allen/Joss Stone/Amy Winehouse.

DC’s Mike James and Mollie Ames discuss: All terrestrial segments were recorded live on August 28th (Day 241 of 2020), and all podcast segments were recorded live on August 31st (Day 244 of 2020) Part 1 of 3 of the Podcast only content – Asking maybe the most important question after the Cleveland Baseball Team traded away its biggest knucklehead in Mike Clevinger to the Padres for a cadre of young talent: Will Zach Plesac be able to step up and fill the team's role of King Knucklehead? And Mollie begins a list of people she wants to hug when the pandemic is finally over. The dehumanization of victims in this country and the over-glorification of today's military, and how the two are fueling the problem of our nation's systemic racism and police brutality. Part 2 of 3 of the Podcast only content – Is it easier to learn a foreign language or the game of golf? A Defend Cleveland official study is under way to determine the answer. (begins around the 1:30:00 mark) Lachlan MacKinnon’s ‘Best of Edition’ Let Me Tell You A Story: “Busted Whig” (begins around the 1:54:00 mark) The difference between a boycott and what the sports world did in shutting down in protest this past week following the shooting of Jacob Blake. The Bail Project in Cleveland receives a huge grant from our city's namesake foundation known largely for its support of local arts, extending its support to provide relief and assistance wherever its needed most. Your Weekly Cleveland Baseball Team Playoff Probabilities! From Hot Mics in last week's episode to Hot Tweets in this week's episode, and finding out it's impossible for your iPhone to autocorrect to a racist term (no matter how racist you are). Part 3 of 3 of the Podcast only content – Mollie’s Weekly Reports: Don't plant any seeds you get in the mail from China, and apparently getting USPS mail deliveries in the outer rim sometimes comes with a side of crack. (begins around the 3:01:00 mark) Discussing Cleveland Scene's recent article about CWRU and all the recent allegations of sexual assault occurring on campus. Nick Saban saying he only wants to play right now for the players is not only a gigantic lie worth billions of dollars to college football (and an additional 8.3 million of Nick's own yearly salary), it's also literally a life and death gamble during this pandemic that risks almost a thousand other players just so a little more than 3% of them might improve their 2020 NFL Draft value. The UFC sold its soul to the Trump Party a long time ago, and how part of its reward for doing so translates to why only 20% of the revenue generated by the UFC fights actually goes to the fighters themselves. Mollie’s Weekly Reports, terrestrial edition! – Surprising no one, a lot of people going to strip clubs in Canada during the pandemic aren't using their real names even if it's required for contact tracing. Young Southpaw talks to Martin Atkins (Pigface, PiL, Brian Brain, Killing Joke, Damage Manual, etc.) about his punk rock ethos, entrepreneurial skills, books and zoom talks, as well as Public Image Limited on American Bandstand, Commercial Zone, GG Allin, the ‘Paul McCartney clause’, and much more https://martinatkins.bigcartel.com/products https://twitter.com/marteeeen Martin Atkins: I’ve got four drawers of board tapes, alternative mixes...So if you’re a PiL fan, I’ve got both nights in Paris, it was released as Paris Au Printemps, that was my first show. And I’ve got both nights’ board tapes. It was actually my suggestion that we release it as a live album. I’ve got both nights in Tokyo. We released one night. [Commercial Zone] is only Keith Levene’s album in that he stole the tapes. I talk about this in one of my presentations - while we were in New York, there were 17 rolls of two-inch tape. So this is me applying - I have my Master’s Degree now, big deal, but it changes the way I look at things - so instead of just going ‘we recorded a bunch of material, it was crazy’, well how much material did we record? Okay, so I go and look at my cassette archive, there’s 17 rolls of two-inch tape. How much music fits on a roll? 32 minutes. Oh my god. So now I have a spreadsheet with all of the songs, all of the versions. There are some songs on Commercial Zone that Keith isn’t even on, that he didn’t know existed until he took the tapes. I don’t think it’s any secret that Keith had a drug problem. Like a really serious drug problem. A really serious problem with serious drugs. We were all using speed and drinking a lot, but he was levels above. There were times...you know John [Lydon] is a magical, charismatic individual. And his charisma protected PiL. There could be 10,000 people in a room and John could stare everybody down, more effectively than security punching people. And we were protected by that. It also allowed for Keith to be not always there at shows. He’d take a two song break. And we’d just do an instrumental version, or John would just sing over bass and drums. And people would be like ‘wow, PiL, it’s crazy’. Instead of ‘hold on a minute, where’s the guitarist? I like this song.’ But we got away with it. I think less and less, but we did get away with it. When we booked ten shows in Japan, the walls started to close in on this version of the band. There are very strict drug laws in Japan. You can’t have a Vicks inhaler. They’re illegal because they’re a stimulant. Never mind heroin. And then Paul McCartney and his band, Wings, he got off a plane with like a kilo of weed. He was in jail for 11 days. I mean, the world went mad. He was fined a million dollars, and then let go. But what happened was every Japanese promoter then retroactively inserted something called ‘the Paul McCartney clause’....
Location: Zoom Date: Monday 13th July Bitcoin is the most significant disruption to money the world has seen in hundreds of years. It takes power away from centralised parties, and it allows any individual to be entirely self-sovereign and operate in an open system uncontrollable and uncensorable by anyone. Bitcoin is punk rock! Punk was not just about music; it was a movement that fought for personal freedom and individualism while remaining staunchly anti-establishment. Keith Levene is a punk legend and was a founding member of iconic band The Clash and co-founded Public Image Ltd alongside former Sex Pistol, John Lydon. With the alignment of punk and Bitcoin, it is not surprising that Keith Levene is a Bitcoiner, and a couple of months ago Keith reached out to me and told me he was a regular listener of the show. In this interview, we discuss the early days of punk rock, the similarities between punk and Bitcoin and why he cares about Bitcoin.
