Cryptid Creator Corner from Comic Book Yeti
John Harris Dunning Interview - Ripperland

Cryptid Creator Corner from Comic Book Yeti

On today's episode of the Cryptid Creator Corner I've got returning guest John Harris Dunning on the show with me to chat about his new Dark Horse Comics Project, Ripperland, co-written by Steve Orlando, with artwork from Alessandro Oliveri, colors by Francesca Vivaldi, and lettering duties covered by Fabio Amelia. We touched on the project in October when John dropped in for our Horror Movie Recommendation Special that Dark Horse co-sponsored with us, but I wanted to hear the full picture, so we made time during the busy holiday season to sit down again for a bit. Ripperland is set in a dystopian future where Victorian England has become a historical theme park for American tourists. Alan Moore's From Hell has been an all-time favorite of mine so it was a delight to hear John's take on the cultural implications of the Jack the Ripper mythos and the wider nuances he's exploring about our national identities and how they interact through the detectives in the story working collaboratively to solve a murder. He also shares what the collaboration process has been like working with Steve on the project. Ripperland is out in stores on January 22, 2025. Make sure to call your shop and have them pull you a copy in advance and check the shelves for his other Dark Horse project Summer Shadows, a steamy romance thriller set on a remote Greek Island that was a favorite of mine in 2024. If you want to hear more about it, check out our 2024 conversation here. Ripperland From the publisher The year is 2188 and Jack the Ripper has returned to London. For the last century, a shattered post-Brexit England has operated as a massive Victorian theme park in exchange for American military and financial protection. But when an American mogul's grandson is killed in the heart of London, the delicate status quo is threatened. Is the killer a brilliant maniac? Americans taking advantage of their superior technology? Or the English Underground Resistance, wishing to throw off the yoke of American oppression and re-join the modern world? American Special Agent Jesse Holden and local British Police Detective Edwin Fogg must overcome their clashing ideologies in order to find the truth in the foggy streets of 22nd Century London. Summer Shadows Trade paperback available April 22nd From the publisher By day the Greek islands are all sand, sea and fun…but by night they're the perfect hunting ground for vampires! Nick Landry is searching for his ex on the unspoiled island of Avraxos. Anthony was the love of his life, and without knowing why he left, Nick can't move on. But Anthony isn't the only one to disappear on Avraxos. Coast guard officer Alekos Kourkoulos is on the trail of another young man who disappeared there. Both men had fallen in with the glamorous set onboard a jet-black superyacht moored offshore before vanishing. As the mystery deepens, Nick and Alekos discover that the brighter the sunshine, the darker the shadows… Acclaimed writer John Harris Dunning (Tumult, Wiper, Salem Brownstone) and talented artist Ricardo Cabral (Wiper) team up again to bring you this darkly seductive horror. When he fled the island, he left behind a debt he promised to one day repay. When Kári Gíslason was 18, he came to the island of Corfu as a stony-broke traveller. But he quickly found work in a little town: lime washing walls and working as a builder's labourer. The man who gave him the work was a mysterious figure known simply as 'the Pirate'.At first, Kári thought it was a nickname given to him as a comic exaggeration of his former life as a ship's cook. But he received warnings from several people to get away from the Pirate. And when the Pirate said he wanted Kári to sail with him across the Atlantic to deliver unnamed goods to Brazil, Kári began to plot his escape.

Welcome back to another episode of the While She's Away Podcast! This week I'm resharing an episode where I guested on The Maverick Show with Matt Bowles.   The Maverick Show is all about real, in-depth chats with some of the most interesting world travelers, digital nomads, and location-independent entrepreneurs. Matt Bowles travels the globe full-time, meeting fascinating people, uncovering stories of their wildest adventures, and breaking down the skills, tactics, and strategies they use to build remote businesses and design their own lifestyles.    I joined Matt for an afternoon wine sesh, and we started talking about my parents' immigrant experience. I reflected on my own journey of embracing my Guatemalan and Puerto Rican heritage, as well as my journey as a queer person. I talked about my journey traveling across Vietnam by motorcycle, living in Spain, and sailing the Greek Islands. I shared the magical experience of attending the largest LGBTQIA+ Pride Celebration in the world in São Paulo, Brazil.   Want to harness the freedom that comes with freelancing? Surviving the Unknown: A Pandemic Refugee's Journey with Author Joel David Bond

My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Joel David Bond, author of the book As Large As Your Spirit: A Reverse Refugee Memoir.  A born explorer, Joel has spent over two decades living and working around the world, from farm work in Italian vineyards to jet-setting as a London-based flight attendant. His recent work in Iraqi Kurdistan built bridges between some of the region's most elite students and the locally marginalized refugee community through service-learning. He holds a Master's in Education from the University of Nottingham, UK. His essay, “Amazing Grace,” was shortlisted for the 2022 Annie Dillard Award for Creative Nonfiction. Bond is available for interviews as well as speaking engagements and events on topics of refugee rights, education in post-conflict societies, life & culture in Iraqi Kurdistan, or travel-related topics. In my book review, I stated As Large as Your Spirit looks at Joel's life during a five-month forced stay on a Greek Island during the pandemic. Although at first glance, being stranded on a Greek Island sounds idyllic, readers soon realize that being trapped anywhere against your wishes is difficult. Though the setting is beautiful, Joel finds himself without friends, without access to funds, and with limited access to the internet during a time when governments limited a person's ability to travel or even interact outside their own home. In essence, Joel found himself a refugee, but one wishing to go back to the east while most refugees were leaving the east to head west. The book is about finding a place to call home - both physically and within oneself. It showcases the plight of refugees, unlike Joel, who had to flee from their home and must now find ways to make new lands their own. We even get a peek at Roma's, people who, though they live in a country, are not accepted as true citizens. This is a great memoir that will make you think about what it means to be a refugee and what you can do to eliminate your own biases. Great read. This book is the perfect late Summer horror read to transition us into the Fall. We got a chance to dig into the unique motivations behind the story, some of the mythology surrounding Greek vampire lore, and who had a better Britney Spears story. Please put this one on your radar y'all. I loved it, and John's star as a writer in the medium will only rise. From the publisher Nick Landry is on the unspoilt Greek island of Avraxos to look for his ex. Anthony was the love of his life, and without knowing why he left, Nick can't move on. But Anthony isn't the only one to disappear on Avraxos. Coast guard officer Alekos Kourkoulos is on the trail of another young man missing on the island. They learn they both fell in with the glamorous set onboard a jet-black super yacht, the Nyx, before vanishing. As the mystery deepens, Nick and Alekos discover that the brighter the sunshine, the darker the shadows… Acclaimed writer John Harris Dunning and artist Ricardo Cabral of Wiper team up again in Summer Shadows!
