It's Halloween, so we decided to do a "scary" one! Podcaster, author, and emissary from the City of Brotherly Love Trevor Strunk joins to discuss Robert Rodriguez's 1998 Breakfast-Club-Meets-Body-Snatchers riff The Faculty. Boasting a memorable cast of young up-and-comers and a script written by Scream-scribe Kevin Williamson, the film is both playfully self-aware and slyly subversive in its explorations of social hierarchies and the omnipresent 90s fixation with conformity to the monoculture. We begin by exploring how the film updates the Body Snatcher narrative, borrowing (and explicitly citing) the literary works of Robert A. Heinlen and Jack Finney, as well as both previous Body Snatchers film adaptations by Don Siegel and Philip Kaufman. Then, we contend with some of the movie's most intriguing premises - its assertions about capitalist hierarchies and how they maintain the oppression of marginalized out-groups as well as how American society impedes gratifying sexual expression (especially for women). Finally, we examine the deceptively cynical ending and what it suggests about the stickiness of the neoliberal order, its structural hold on the horizons of our sociopolitical imagination. Hour 2 in full
It's time for our annual Halloween Movie and this year we have chosen the reboot of The Haunted Mansion. This movie weaves disconnected characters, spirits, and lots of "easter eggs" as a homage to the famous Haunted Mansion ride at Disneyland/Disneyworld. This is a movie where you can have a "Bingo Card" trying to find all of those scenes, references and, and moments regarding the ride. But along the way prepared to be entertained and see how unintentional community can be found! And don't be surprised that this year's Halloween episode is number 13 for this season...

Roxy Striar & Tara Erickson revisit the legacy of Michael Myers as they rank all 13 Halloween movies — from John Carpenter's Halloween (1978) to Halloween Ends (2022). Every film in the saga gets discussed: Halloween (1978), Halloween II (1981), Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982), Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers (1988), Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers (1989), Halloween 6: The Curse of Michael Myers (1995), Halloween H20: 20 Years Later (1998), Halloween Resurrection (2002), Rob Zombie's Halloween (2007), Halloween II (2009), Halloween (2018), Halloween Kills (2021), and Halloween Ends (2022). We talk Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis), Michael Myers (Nick Castle, James Jude Courtney, Tyler Mane), Dr. Loomis (Donald Pleasence, Malcolm McDowell), Karen (Judy Greer), Allyson (Andi Matichak), and Will Patton's Hawkins — as well as directors John Carpenter, Rick Rosenthal, Dwight H. Little, Dominique Othenin-Girard, Joe Chappelle, Steve Miner, Rick Rosenthal, Rob Zombie, and David Gordon Green. From “Evil Dies Tonight” to “You Can't Kill the Boogeyman,” we break down iconic kills, legendary quotes, and timeline confusion across every sequel, reboot, and retcon. This reaction and ranking dives into which movies truly define the Halloween mythos, which sequels went off the rails, and how the franchise evolved from slasher terror to trauma study.
