How to capture the sound of something humans can't hear? How to make a song about a mushroom? That was the challenge put to Scottish musician, Hannah Read, in the wake of her father's death. Hannah, who lives in California, fell into an earthy world of mycelium in 2020, and her album, The Fungi Sessions, captures a growing fascination with fungi in through beautiful folk music. We were fortunate enough to catch Hannah while she was in her Edinburgh hometown before she went on a UK Tour. At the city's Botanic Gardens, she told us about falling in love with music on the Isle of Eigg, her relationship with the landscape and what she's learned from the earth - as well as treating us to an al fresco performance. In this episode of The Bandwich Tapes, I sit down with the incredibly talented Carolyn Kendrick—singer-songwriter, instrumentalist, and all-around creative powerhouse. We dive into her musical journey and influences and get the inside scoop on her upcoming album, Each Machine. Carolyn and I chat about how technology and AI are shaping the music industry, the essential role rhythm plays in songwriting, and the unique collaborative spirit of the fiddling community. She also opens up about her creative process, the concept behind her new album, and her experiences at Berklee's American Roots program. This conversation is a deep dive into where traditional meets modern and how community shapes the arts.Carolyn Kendrick is a Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter, fiddler, guitarist, and producer. After many happy years on the road as a side musician, Kendrick has blossomed as a solo artist since issuing her debut EP, Tear Things Apart, in 2020. Heralded as “hauntingly lovely” (Paste Magazine), you won't want to miss a Carolyn Kendrick live performance. After graduating from Berklee College of Music, Kendrick crisscrossed the country with her former duo project, The Page Turners. She has shared the stage with beloved artists such as Darol Anger, Bruce Molsky, Aoife O'Donovan, Kaia Kater, Hannah Read, Margo Price, The Clements Brothers, and Jacksonport. She has played festivals such as Newport Folk Festival, Greyfox Bluegrass Festival, Savannah Music Festival, and won awards such as the Freshgrass ‘Best Duo' Award, The Fletcher Bright Award, and was the Fall 2023 Composer In Residence at the University of the Pacific. In addition to her songwriting career, Kendrick is active in the Bluegrass and Old-Time fiddle scene and produced and written music for the award-winning podcasts You're Wrong About (Podcast of the Year, iHeart Radio) and You Are Good. Her forthcoming album, Each Machine, is a collection of traditional and original political folk songs inspired by her time researching The Satanic Panic for the history podcast You're Wrong About. These songs are modern, electric re-imaginings of hymns, murder ballads, pagan chanting, and even songs of devil-worship. The first single, The Devil's Nine Questions, is available for pre-order now and will be released October 1st, 2024. The full album, both physical + digital copies, as well as an accompanying zine of behind-the scenes photography and essays, will be released 12.6.24 on High Occulture Records. To learn more about Carolyn, please visit carolynkendrick.com.Thank you for tuning in! The sure touch of Golden Voice narrator Julia Whelan transforms Kristen Hannah's absorbing novel about Vietnam War combat nurses into an addictive listen. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Robin Whitten discuss this intimate portrait and sprawling account of a searing time. The story focuses on 20-year-old Frances McGrath, who, in 1965, impetuously chooses the Army Nurse Corps over cotillions and marriage. As the novel interweaves historical research with the characters' Vietnam and post-war lives, Whelan's intensity and warmth help listeners empathize with the personal and understand the big picture. Help produce Basic Folk by contributing at https://basicfolk.com/donate/I have been wanting to talk to Scotland-born fiddler and current New Yorker, Hannah Read on the pod, for longer than Basic Folk has existed. I met her at the very fun camp, Miles of Music in New Hampshire. We laughed our faces off all week and I was truly blown out of the water by her fiddling and singing. She's just released a new duo album with the Scottish banjo player Michael Starkey, so it seemed like a good time to get Han on. She grew up in Edinburgh as well as on the Isle of Eigg, a remote island off the western coast of Scotland and she talks about how living simply as a younger person has impacted her adulthood. Growing up, there was a lot of music in the house: in terms of listening and playing. Her mum played cello, sister played fiddle, there was also a community of musicians on the island playing that she connected very deeply with. She started playing Scottish traditional music at the age of six and cites her biggest influences as the musicians surrounding the trad scene in Scotland. She made her way to America to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston and eventually moved to Brooklyn. Her new album with Michael, Cross The Rolling Water is filled with old-time fiddle and banjo duets with the Edinburgh-based musician Michael Starkey. The two met at an Appalachian old time session in Edinburgh in late 2019. She talks about their musical relationship as well as how Michael only has a flip phone, which is always hilarious to hear about from someone who's on top of technology. Hannah's hilarious, kind and has an infectious energy that carries from her personality to her music. Enjoy!Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

Simon Waterhouse and Charlie Zailer are back in best-selling author Sophie Hannah's twisty new psych suspense. Six couples. One luxury resort. And the perfect murder.... You're on your honeymoon at an exclusive couples-only resort. You receive a note warning you to 'beware of the couple at the table nearest to yours'. At dinner that night, five other couples are present and none of their tables is any nearer or further away than any of the others. It's as if someone has set the scene in order to make the warning note meaningless - but why would anyone do that? You have no idea. You also don't know that you're about to be murdered, or that once you're dead, all the evidence will suggest that no one there that night could possibly have committed the crime. So who might be trying to warn you? And who might be about to commit the perfect impossible murder?

Narrator Julia Whelan brings vivid characterizations to Kristin Hannah’s saga about the 1930s Dust Bowl, from the perspective of Elsa Wolcott. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile’s Robin Whitten discuss Whelan’s skill at becoming characters and making us ache, smile, and cry for them, their hardships, and their grit. Elsa Wolcott is tall, gangly, unloved by her family, and trapped in a spinster’s life in a Texas panhandle town. An encounter with handsome Rafe Martinelli leads to a shotgun wedding, and they are unexpectedly content until the Depression, drought, and wind decimate the land and the people. With forceful narrative drive, Whelan delivers a compelling performance of Hannah’s memorable new novel. Published by Macmillan Audio. Lomelda is the stage name of Texas-born singer and guitarist Hannah Read. The distinction between Lomelda and Hannah is one she wrestles with on her new album, called “Hannah.” She has a remarkable voice and her songs can swing from softly sung ballads to roaring guitar-based rock; and those songs can cover topics like family, music, creativity, and most notably on this new album, Hannah Read. The album is called Hannah, and in addition to “Hannah’s Sun,” we get tracks called “Hannah Happiest” and “Hannah Please.” But we also get the apparently definitive song title “It’s Lomelda,” a tune that namechecks favorite bands like Low, Yo La Tengo, and Frank Ocean. Lomelda (Hannah?) plays some her inventively-arranged songs, solo, remotely. Set list: "Wonder," "Tommy Dread," "Polyurethane": "Wonder": "Tommy Dread,": "Polyurethane,":
«So confused who I have been, who I haven't», besingt die amerikanische Singer-Songwriterin Lomelda aka Hannah Read aus Texas tagebuchartig ihre Unsicherheit.

Lomelda - "Wonder" from the 2020 album Hannah on Double Double Whammy. From the swamps of Silsbee, TX emerges singer/songwriter Hannah Read, who records under the name Lomelda, but she re-embraces her birth name for the title of her forthcoming fifth full-length, Hannah, out September 4th via Double Double Whammy. Read recorded the album with her brother Tommy over the span of a year, apparently re-recording it three different times before she was satisfied. Via a press release, Read describes today's Song of the Day as "about working hard," adding, "It is my most fun song to play. And I got to play drums on it, so it's my favorite Lomelda song forever. May it motivate you to move and smash like it does me." Read the full post on KEXP.org Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donate

The new standalone from 'one of the great unmissables of the genre - intelligent, classy and with a wonderfully gothic imagination' [The Times] - with a disturbingly impossible situation. All Beth has to do is drive her son to his Under-14s away match, watch him play, and bring him home. Just because she knows that her former best friend lives near the football ground, that doesn't mean she has to drive past her house and try to catch a glimpse of her. Why would Beth do that, and risk dredging up painful memories? She hasn't seen Flora Braid for twelve years. But she can't resist. She parks outside Flora's house and watches from across the road as Flora and her children, Thomas and Emily, step out of the car. Except... There's something terribly wrong. Flora looks the same, only older - just as Beth would have expected. It's the children that are the problem. Twelve years ago, Thomas and Emily Braid were five and three years old. Today, they look precisely as they did then. They are still five and three. They are Thomas and Emily without a doubt - Beth hears Flora call them by their names - but they haven't changed at all. They are no taller, no older. Why haven't they grown?

Trischka and Eriksen and crew revel in little-known songs and carols, working in the haunting sound of shape note music that might date back to the Revolutionary era. Tony Trischka and friends play a few of these tunes, in-studio. - Caryn Havlik Watch the session here:

At Hands Up for Trad we have lots of awards and this next artist Fraser Fifield has just received our Ignition Award for innovation within traditional music. We then have a new release (Shift) from Scots singer Kirsty Law and we finish with a slightly older release from The Shee's Decadence album. Listen to and download all our other Foot Stompin’ Scottish music podcasts at www.handsupfortrad.co.uk. Thanks for listening!
