State of the Arts Episode 251 is now available on Spotify! Return guest Marc Black joins me once again to dicuss more griping topics. Stroke awareness is a cause that is very dear to his heart. A good friend of Marc's was in a coma as a result of a stroke. When the situation looked hopeless and his life support was disconnected, he came to on his own. During his recovery period, he collaborated on songs with Marc. These songs eventually formed an album. A film called “Stroke of Genius” was made about Marc's friend as well. “Everybody Wants My Hat” is a song Marc Black had released when he became a grandfather during the 2020 pandemic. In addition to his many original songs, he is also the proprietor of an advertising company called “Black Market Productions.” His music has been placed in various commercials and television shows. His works can be seen on a Sex and the City episode, an animated piece on Nickelodeon, an AT&T commercial and many other places. One of his most notable songs “I Love You, Rachel Maddow” was played on The Stephen Colbert Show. Tune in to this riveting episode for all the tea on this highly accomplished creative whom I am so honored to have on State of the Arts!

Welcome to another dreary Thursday with clouds in the forecast and a high of just 50°. Thankfully, it's Friday tomorrow! Kicked things off with some good news for once…as it appears the two-month search for Sophia Franklin has come to an end after she was reportedly found safe! In other news, a UW-Eau Claire faculty member who was involved in an on-campus incident earlier this week has now stepped down as the Chair of the Pablo Confluence Board. Also, voter turnout in La Crosse was rather high for this week's elections, the Marshfield Clinic is once again asking for your ticks, and Jean Claude Van-Damme has been accused of sex trafficking. In sports, the Brewers got a walk-off bunt victory over the Royals yesterday, Alexander Ovechkin scored his 892nd career goal last night to pull within two of tying Gretzky's record, and March Madness fires back up tomorrow night & continues through the weekend. Elsewhere in sports, the Bucks are in Philly tonight to take on the 76ers, Carmelo Anthony is headed to the basketball Hall of Fame, Bucknell University is being sued by the parents of a deceased football player, the NBA is looking into Ja Morant's "finger-guns" gesture, and the Timberwolves are set to be sold to A-Rod & his investors. We talked to Office Cora this morning to see what's happening in the 715 this weekend, and we had another round of hypothetical questions for one another on "Hypothetical Thursday". Jean's question for Brian was: "If you could go back in time & correct something or undo something...what would it be?" Brian's questions for Jean was: "Make a rock & roll super group" Much like the river by the old Northside Shopko location, a small town in Minnesota is flooded with bald eagles right now, and a teen is being called a hero after saving a woman & two children from a house fire last week. A couple of interesting surveys about bathrooms, including the worst types of bathrooms to use while traveling, and whether or not major changes are coming to public restrooms. Do you always take your leftovers home from restaurants when you eat out? Apparently, 12% of people don't. And in today's edition of "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about a former principal in #Florida who's been accused of hosting underage parties at his house, a guy who robbed a store with a machete, a #FloridaMan who got drunk on a beach and exposed himself, a mayor in North Dakota texting a video of himself whackin-off at work to the wrong person, and a toddler in England accidentally ate his grandfather's ashes. OTIS  drops by The City's Backyard this week...The Commonwealth of Kentucky has a storied music history and a large catalog of renowned artists. While it's most famous for producing more country music stars per capita than anywhere else in the United States, musicians all across the spectrum —from bluegrass to rock and roll—have called Kentucky home. Out of this musical melting pot comes the blues based, rock 'n' roll band OTIS. With Boone Froggett on guitar and vocals, John Seeley on bass, Alex Wells on guitar, and Dale Myers on drums, the members of The Otis Band are staying connected to their Kentucky roots. Growing up around traditional instruments like piano, fiddle, and guitar instilled in them an appreciation for country-rock, bluegrass, gospel, and folk music. Kentucky's rich musical heritage led them to discover the Rock and Blues heroes that continue to influence the bands original material today. While it would be easy to categorize the work of OTIS as Southern Rock, being from Kentucky, their musical background is much broader. In addition to being guided by the classic rock giants of the 1960s and 70s era, the members of OTIS draw inspiration from true greats—people like Muddy Waters, Leadbelly, and the artists of Motown—to create their own unique rock and roll sound. After releasing Tough Times: A Tribute to John Brim,—Former Chess Records Blues Recording Artist— in 2014, OTIS joined Cleopatra Records in 2017, with the release of their second album Eyes of the Sun. A chance meeting with ZZ Top's Billy F. Gibbons led to the legend listening to Otis and becoming a fan—even handing their albums off to the likes of Buddy Guy and Jeff Beck! Four songs from Eyes of the Sun were also included in the soundtrack of the 2020 film Street Survivors.OTIS comes to The Iridium July 13th!https://theotisband.com

Mike and the band just returned from their September tour in Poland, and he tells us how American Blues music connects with people all over the world. He also shares the importance music has had in his life. When I first heard Mike sing, I thought it was Jack Bruce from Cream. Mike Onesko soulful voice is the heart of the Blindside Blues Band sound.   Mike was discovered in the clubs of Martin County, California by Shrapnel records president Mike Varney. Shortly after, Onesko formed the Blindside Blues Band with Scott Johnson on guitar, Gregg Chaisson on bass guitar and, Racer X frontman and Badlands drummer, Jeff Martin on drums. The band put out three records with this lineup. Although Gregg played on the records he never did any live shows with the band. That duty was filled admirably by Kier Staeheli. The last Shrapnel lineup for the Blindside Blues Band was Mike Onesko, Mike Varney, Aysnley Dunbar, James Lomenzo. Onesko went on to Comet Records in Italy to record many records such as "Mike Onesko's Guitar Army", "Smokehouse Sessions", "Live At The Torrita Blues Festival, Italy", as well as "Voodoo Crossing" and "Gypsy Blood" (both Jimi Hendrix tributes). mikeonesko.com

"People would come to me and say, "GT, you have a great voice". And even when they'd say all those things, I knew I could sing; but then, the gravity at which people were coming, I just couldn't deny it. They kept coming and saying "Wow, the guy with the good voice". I now became "the guy with the good voice"; people didn't call me GT anymore. They'd be like, "that guy can sing"... I mean, it was more like music found me... or people just chose me." - GT Da Guitarman, Singer & Guitarist. "When am I gonna be what I wanna be, When am I gonna see what I wanna see, Time is ticking and I can't wait no more, Do dreams ever come true in this part of this world." Those words are from the song, Dreamer, by GT Da Guitarman - the artistic side of Olaolu Olugbemiro Tokunbo. Such powerful lyrics the song has, echoing the cries of many young individuals even today - "when will my dreams come true?" In 2021, we knew we wanted to interview GT on Origins Africa Podcast. If anything, to ask just one question - 2021 made it 16 years since he released Dreamer; was GT still curious about when he was going to be what he wanted to be or had his dreams come true?  GT''s origin story is one of a young man who had a dream to be heard all over the world through his music, and who gave that dream a shot. Indeed, he was heard. But along the way, he got frustrated, gave up on the dream for some time and went on to do something else. Today, GT is back pursuing that dream with renewed passion like he never left. On this episode, Part 1, you will hear GT talk about growing up in what he called a "broken home". He'll talk about the defining moment that shaped his decision to pursue music as a career, how he got his first guitar, the moment he got signed into Storm Records, and then, taking a break from pursuing his dream - music.   #GTDaGuitarman #GT #OlaoluOlugbemiroTokunbo #OriginsAfrica #OriginsAfricaPodcast   *** 1-2-1 Newsletter by Origins Africa Catch our 1-2-1 Newsletter where we share with you 1 Lesson, 2 Quotes, and 1 Question from each guest interview. Guitarist and lyricist, Dustin Gaspard, who recently released Hoping Heaven Got a Kitchen, is our guest on Discover Lafayette. A poet since he was a young boy, Dustin is a self-taught vocalist and guitarist. He has taken his love of music and writing to produce his first complete album which was released in late February 2022 and is a prayer to the memory of his grandmother and grandfather who raised him in Cow Island in Southern Vermilion Parish. "My grandfather made me the man I am today." Dustin Gaspard will be showcasing his new album, Hoping Heaven Got a Kitchen, in a live venue at the Acadiana Center for The Arts on March 31, 2022, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. The Grammy Nominated band, Sweet Cecilia, a family trio from Cecilia, LA, will be the opening act for the show. Tickets may be purchased here. Raised on vintage 50s/ 60s soul and swamp pop, and other traditional folk sounds, Dustin is an alternative folk songwriter and frontman/vocalist for Rock N Soul group DG and the Freetown Sound. After rehabbing his voice which had been silenced as a young man due to vocal strain that irreparably damaged his vocal cords, he has paid his dues in life and is ascending in the music world, humble and wise beyond his years. We can't express how much we wish him the greatest success as he continues to find his voice, his lyrics, and the audience who will raise him up. In South Louisiana, it can be tough for songwriters that aren't Cajun musicians to get their music showcased. As Dustin says, "You can't dance to a sad-boy singer-songwriter's tunes. There is a time and a place for that." By chance in 2019, Justin found the application process for South Louisiana Songwriters Festival Scholarship online and applying at the last minute, he was selected after a lengthy period of rehabilitating his voice during a time where he was writing more thoughtful songs, reflecting on his life. He had lost the complete range of his voice on both ends of the spectrum and it had made him think of his career in the long-term, rather than squandering his talent by abusing his voice and body. "If I'm not capable of executing the vocal athletics I had before, then I'll be a folk-songwriter and hone my craft and lyrics and how I convey myself as an artist," Dustin thought. "I will be forever extremely grateful to CREATE Lafayette, Kate Durio, and all who were so supportive of me. My South Louisiana Songwriters Festival Scholarship continues to open doors to me." Based upon his talent and submission of music, Dustin was selected as the second recipient of the South Louisiana Songwriters Festival Scholarship, which offers a platform for all types of musicians. He was introduced to acclaimed songwriters from around the world who made him feel less alone. Finding the application process for SOLO online and applying at the last minute, he was selected after 1 1/2 years of rehabilitating his voice in a time period where he was writing more thoughtful songs, reflecting on his life. He had lost the complete range of his voice on both ends of the spectrum and it had made him think of his career in the long-term, rather than squandering his talent by abusing his voice and body. "If I'm not capable of executing the vocal athletics I had before, then I'll be a folk-songwriter and hone my craft and lyrics and how I convey myself as an artist," Dustin thought. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lo_5EtZnC0s Dustin Gaspard is also an active musician with DG and the Freetown Sound, a high energy, blues, rock & roll band developed to break into the local music scene. Their music is light and free....a true fun sound that everyone can enjoy. DG and the Freetown Sound is a high-energy, blues, and rock & roll band that Dustin Gaspard also sings with. "It's a fund band to dance to!" Dustin Gaspard exemplifies the type of talent a community wants to see thrive and grow! Best wishes, Dustin, on a bright future!

My guests today are Sammy Hagar and his longtime guitarist Vic Johnson. What really needs to be said about Sammy Hagar, one of the all time greats of rock and roll vocalists- From Montrose, Van Halen and his own solo career to everything in between he is one of the most identifiable voices ever, and even now at at age 70 he's still kicking ass.  As a huge Van Halen fan myself (Edward Van Halen is the reason I play guitar today, he was such a big influence on me) it was great to sit with Sammy and talk about guitarists, songs, his new concept record (Space Between) with The Circle (with Vic Johnson, Jason Bonham and Mike Anthony.) We also talk about a few Van Halen stories, Montrose, what Sammy looks for in a guitarist and how Vic Johnson got the gig. Vic, a great guitarist in his own right also was a member of the Busboys and shared a couple great stories as well.
