Inspired by the new podcast The Curiosity Shop, Alison, Danielle and Caroline take on the things they might never agree on — welcome to TWT Fight Club. In the ring: Do academic and conceptual frameworks actually help public servants do their jobs, or are they a privilege that most people simply don't have time for?Central agencies: great idea, but are they delivering? The trio debates whether they're connectors and coordinators — or arrogant secret-keepers who love a template.Delivery units get their moment in the ring too, with strong views on the difference between a compliance-heavy traffic light report and genuine brokerage between agencies. And the big one: would they go back to the public service? Caroline misses it in her bones, Danielle has a very petty list of reasons why probably not, and Alison is delighted to never write another bona fide.Referenced in this episode: James Plunkett, The Centre is from Mars, the Edges are from Venus: https://medium.com/@jamestplunkett/the-centre-is-from-mars-the-edges-are-from-venus-abca86f66bb8 This podcast was recorded on Kaurna land, and we recognise Kaurna elders past and present. Trevor and Eugene sit down with professor, author, and The Curiosity Shop co-host Brené Brown for a conversation about connection in an age of constant connectivity. From parasocial relationships and modern media to friendship, community, and the universal desire to feel like we belong, Brené brings her trademark mix of insight, honesty, and humor. Together, the three explore why genuine human connection can feel harder to find than ever — and why it remains one of the most important things we have. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Brené Brown and Adam Grant have devoted much of their work to helping people better understand conflict, communication, and human behavior. Nevertheless, the two spent years estranged after a 2016 article Grant wrote led to a falling out between them. Now, they've reunited for a new podcast, The Curiosity Shop, where they explore complicated and often polarizing questions with humility, nuance, and a willingness to challenge each other in real time. Katie talks with them about repairing their relationship, why so many people struggle to have honest conversations, the impact of social media and outrage culture, and what it takes to stay open-minded in an increasingly divided world. Brené Brown is a world-renowned researcher and author, known for her work on vulnerability, courage, and what makes truly effective leaders. She has spent decades studying human behaviour, uncovering how fear, connection, and self-awareness shape performance at the highest level. In this episode, Brené sits down with Jake and Damian to explore the difference between safe and unsafe leadership, and how fear quietly drives decisions at work and at home. She explains why the best leaders don't avoid vulnerability, but use it to build trust, clarity, and stronger teams. They cover why your greatest strength might secretly be your armour, the formula every elite performer needs to understand (performance = potential minus interference), why organisational leaders are the only high-performers in the world where coaching isn't expected, and what England's penalty curse and Liverpool's current struggles really tell us about the psychology of winning.Plus — a special surprise message from Steven Gerrard leaves Brené lost for words!Subscribe to Brené's podcast ‘The Curiosity Shop' on YouTube or your favorite app for new episodes every Thursday.Brené's latest book ‘Strong Ground' is available now: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Strong-Ground-Leadership-Tenacity-Vermilion/dp/178504320XLinks referenced in podcast: The lethality of loneliness: John Cacioppo TED TALKOur partners in this episode: Heights

Tonight's reading coms from the The Old Curiosity Shop, published in 1841. Written by Charles Dickens, it tells the story of a gentle young girl and her grandfather who live in a small London shop filled with strange antiques as they quietly navigate life and the wider world around them.
Kitty Reads Lit for Peace: Dickens – The Old Curiosity Shop plus The Next Peacelands Welcome back to Kitty Reads Literature for Peace, a quiet act of daily storytelling in a noisy world. In this episode, Kitty O'Compost reads the opening of The Old Curiosity Shop by Charles Dickens—a writer who turned social conscience into art and believed deeply in the redemptive power of attention. With her warm lilt, Kitty slows Dickens down just enough for us to hear the tenderness at the heart of his writing: the oddities, the wanderers, and the small mercies that hold a broken world together. These short readings are her daily warm-up for CTRL–AI–DISARM, the upcoming Peace Is Here series about truth, power, and the technologies shaping our future. At the end of the episode, we continue with The Next Peacelands, where Avis Kalfsbeek reads a real-time list of global warzones and arms suppliers. This segment grounds the work in honesty and invites listeners into a wider, quieter practice of peace. In 1971, Michael Eisner decided he was going to make a commercial competitor for PBS's then ascendant Sesame Street. The result was Curiosity Shop, a show about four kids going to a curiosity shop run by the absent Mr. Jones. It featured music, puppets, and animation -- including appearances by the cast of Miss Peach, Dennis the Menace, BC, and Wizard of Id. Only two episodes remain, so we take a look.

Episode 81 - Three... It's a Magic NumberJuly 29, 2023 - Host: Dr. Gregory HallI grew up listening to School House Rock. I know that dates me a little… but I suspect with the internet and all… there are many in every generation that are familiar with songs like Interjections, I'm Just a Bill, and Conjunction Junction. These songs were formative during my development years. It was during those years that I also learned that the number three… well... there's something about that number that's magic. In today's episode we'll look into the significance of the number three, both culturally and biblically.Resources Referenced and/or Read:Hall, Gregory D. It goes over multiplying by three. This song was the pilot episode of the whole Schoolhouse Rock! series. It features a magician, who goes over multiplying by three while many examples are provided. (A man and a woman having a baby –three in the family; heart, soul, body – three parts) The music and lyrics are by Bob Dorough, and it is also performed by him (with uncredited backing vocalists and a male singer). It first premiered on the pilot episode of "Curiosity Shop" on September 2, 1971. Two years later, when Schoolhouse Rock! premiered, the airdate was on January 6, 1973. (https://schoolhouserock.fandom.com/wiki/Three_Is_a_Magic_Number)Transition Music - produced by Jacob A. HallOutro - Hip-hop trio De La Soul interpolated the "Three is a Magic Number" song as "The Magic Number", which was included in their 1989 debut studio album, 3 Feet High and Rising. The track gained further exposure when it was featured in the 2021 superhero crossover film Spider-Man: No Way Home. Their cover appears on the original release of the film's soundtrack, while a music video appears on the film's original DVD release. The album version is slightly longer than the TV version, because it has an extra verse explaining the pattern of each set of ten containing three multiples of three. Robert Osbourne and Face2Face host David Peck talk about his new film Malcolm is Missing, tenacity and passionate commitment to a cause, justice and corruption, family and why sometimes pushing back against the system is necessary.TrailerWatch on CBC GemSynopsis:Malcom is Missing, from Canadian documentarians Robert Osborne and Jari Osborne, is an affecting and suspenseful portrait of a daughter who wouldn't give up, and a corruption-riddled system of justice - a country where 100,000 people go missing every year and 95% of violent crimes are never solved. In between the moments of investigative discovery, Malcom is Missing paints a picture of a strained but loving family, a man-child of a father who left Brooke's life early, but maintained a bond that compelled her to find out his fate. We see his odd collection of miniatures, including a mechanical “Curiosity Shop,” and gradually get a sense of a man who's a curious combination of guarded and suspicious yet oddly naïve and trusting. "I am always amazed and inspired by how passionate and articulate so-called “ordinary” people can be,” says co-director Jari Osborne. “Brooke is no exception. In fact, in every way, I find Brooke remarkable--as is her story. Malcom is Missing is certainly a true crime thriller. But at its heart, beats the story of a brilliant, elusive--and flawed—father, and the daughter who would rescue him and find herself profoundly changed." On April 14, 2023, four-and-a-half years after he disappeared, Malcom's killers were finally convicted in a Mexican court—Marcela, Martin and Andres each received sentences of 56 years.About Robert:Robert Osborne is the Senior Producer of Dam Builder Productions. He brings to the table more than 30 years of working in long format television. For much of that time he was an investigative journalist working for CTV, CBC and Global Television. In 2012 Robert changed course and began to work exclusively in the field of documentaries--combining his experience as a journalist with new expertise he acquired as a Director, Producer and Writer. The amalgamation of those skills have led to a pair of well-regarded investigative documentaries.Robert has won more than half a dozen RTNDA Awards, a CAJ Award and an Award of Merit from the Governor General. He has been nominated several times for Gemini awards and been part of a team that won two. In 2012 he was nominated for a CSA Award for Unlocking Alex. In 2018 he won a CSA for best writing in a documentary.Image Copyright: Robert Osbourne & Dambuilder Productions.F2F Music and Image Copyright: David Peck and Face2Face. SUMMARY KEYWORDS books, bookstore, authors, story, kawaii, friday night, business, customers, talk, started, book signings, generally, thought, sell, hobbies, debt, meeting, david bach, podcast, friday Hello, everyone, it's Dr. Sam, I'd like to welcome you to my EyeClarity podcast. This is a show that offers cutting edge information on how to improve your vision and overall wellness through holistic methods. I so appreciate you spending part of your day with me. If you have questions, you can send them to hello@drsamberne.com. 00:01 Hey everybody, it's Dr. Sam and I'd like to welcome you to a special EyeClarity podcast today. So we have on the line, the owner of talk story books in kawaii gentleman's name is Ed Justus. And I am doing a book signing at the bookstore this coming Friday. And well, I was curious about having it on and you know, as an independent bookstore, there are not as many of those I would like to see. But anyways, let's bring Ed on to the program. So Ed, tell us a little bit about yourself and how you started the bookstore and give it give us your story. 00:52 Sure, thank you for having me on Dr. Berne. Why I'm originally from Virginia, actually, I came to Hawaii in 2002, just for a visit. And then when I got here, it felt more like home than any place I've ever been. So I just decided to stay. And I started over with a few $100 in my suitcases, and just took it from there. And month to month, I started going around to garage sales and picking stuff up and reselling it on eBay to make a living. And that's after two years of doing that, that's how it sort of became the bookstore. I never actually planned to open a bookstore, it just sort of happened. So there was a landlord couple in the town upon a paper they who I got to meet when I moved to the west side of kawaii and they, after talking with them for a little while they to make the story short, they actually offered me a space free per month to start a business. And at the time, I didn't have any background and books or retail or business. So I it just seemed like a good way to get the eBay, eBay product out of the house. And I figured it customers would walk into the shop maybe I might sell more the eBay product. But it seemed obvious once I removed all the stuff into the shop that it seemed like a bookstore and Curiosity Shop because I had about 3000 use books and a variety of Watson ends. And that's basically how it got started. And I I also didn't know what to call it either because I didn't want it to have a name that would be kind of typical, like paradise books or something boring like kawaii bookstore. I thought okay, what can we call it? So I put it out to the community to ask them, What would you like the store to be called. And eventually somebody came back with a name talk story. And it just fit it just felt right. And talk story is a local colloquialism, which means to chat or to shoot the breeze or to share his story. And that's how talk story bookstore began back in 2004. 03:10 Yeah, I love to hear those stories, you know, has a because you're, you're an entrepreneur, you know, in some ways, and I know the magic of kawaii sometimes you go to a place and you never think you're gonna stay there. And then all of a sudden, you become a pillar of the community. So what has been some of your most interesting, you know,

The Old Curiosity Shop by Charles Dickens audiobook. Her grandfather loves her dearly, and Nell does not complain, but she lives a lonely existence without friends of her own age. Her only friend is Kit, an honest young lad who works at the shop, and whom she is teaching to write. Unbeknownst to Nell, her grandfather is obsessed with their precarious financial position and is attempting to make Nell a good inheritance by winning at cards. He keeps these nocturnal activities a secret, but borrows heavily from the evil Quilp, a dwarf, in order to raise new capital. In the end, he gambles away what little money they own, and Quilp seizes the opportunity to take possession of the shop and make Nell's and her grandfather's lives a misery. Indeed, her grandfather suffers a breakdown, which leaves him bereft of his wits. Courageously, Nell decides to escape Quilp, and she and her grandfather run away to the country to live as beggars, travelling into the Midlands of England. There, then, follow the multifarious adventures of Nell and her grandfather, Quilp and his sly minions and accomplices, who would be Nell's vehement pursuers throughout the entire story, the noble schoolmaster, and many, many other personages as bright and memorable as Dickens' heroes always are. But... let us hear the story itself, shan't we?
