At Maroon PR we like to say that we are the agency that clients want to have a beer with. In this season of SPIN is a Four Letter Word, we are doing just that: having a beer with guests as we discuss everything from hot topics in PR to how relationships drive growth. Join us for the journey - Cheers! Episode 1 features the Godfather of Baltimore beer, Hugh Sission, Founder and CEO of Heavy Seas Beer. It was 1982, when the idea first crossed Hugh Sisson's mind. At the time, he was running the only craft beer bar in Baltimore with his father. He couldn't help but wonder if he could make his own beer, or if it was even possible. It was the question that would alter his life forever. In 2003, Clipper City introduced the Heavy Seas line of beers. They were bold beers meant to challenge the average beer drinker-- high alcohol with incredible flavor. In 2010, the great success of the Heavy Seas line of beers was the deciding factor in adopting the name Heavy Seas for the brewery. The rest, as they say, is history. In this episode we discuss Hugh's keys to success, about taking risks, and his approach to business.

Hugh Sisson, founder of Heavy Seas Beer, got his start running Sisson's craft beer bar with his father. In 1986, Sisson met with local legislators to push for the legalization of brew pubs in Baltimore City. A year after he left Sisson's Brewpub, he started brewing in 1995 as Clipper City Brewing Company. In 2003, Clipper City introduced the Heavy Seas line of beers, and in 2010 the brewery rebranded under the name Heavy Seas. Two years later, Chris Leonard joined the team as Brewmaster, and expansion of the brewery commenced. Today, Heavy Seas is enjoyed by beer lovers nationwide and continues to grow and develop new, daring beers for the world to enjoy. Be fearless. Be bold. Be independent. In episode 185, "A Real Slupsk of a Pickle", Tony & Eddie review Seth Rogen's new HBO MAX exclusive, An American Pickle (2020). Although it's an interesting take on the accidental time travel troupe (albeit a bit outlandish in deployment), the boys questioned the purpose of the film often. Although there's comedy notes here - nothing seems to land. Although there's heart in the film - nothing seems to permeate. Although there's social commentary on our current struggles with social media - there's no weight. The overwhelming feeling that Tony & Eddie had was that this movie wasn't bad, but they struggled like hell to find reasons why it was good. Of course there were two new beers on deck. Tony had a new brew from a new brewery yet to be featured on the show. His Heavy Seas Golden Ale choice might be great for light beer lovers or those just getting into the craft beer world. Eddie brought a homebrew to the show to sample. A Northern Brewer homebrew kit - Zombie DIRT Citra IPA. If you've ever thought about trying to brew beer at home - listen in to gets some preliminary tips.

In episode 11 of the Brewbound Podcast, editor Chris Furnari interviews Hugh Sisson, the founder and managing partner of Heavy Seas Beer in Baltimore, Maryland. In the mid-’80s, Sisson successfully lobbied the Maryland General Assembly to pass legislation required to open a brewpub in Maryland, and he opened the state’s first pub brewery, called Sisson’s. In 1994, he left Sisson’s to launch Clipper City Brewing Company, which is more widely known as Heavy Seas. Today, his company’s products are sold in 20 states as well as Washington, D.C. During the interview, Hugh discusses how his company is evolving amid increasing competition within the craft beer segment, and he explains the headwinds facing regional breweries. He also talks about trends that he’s paying close attention to, and shares his vision of how the beer category will continue to mature in the coming years. When beer lovers think of what goes on behind the scenes at a brewery, thoughts may drift to barrels or exotic ingredients or post-shift taste trials of the latest, trendy creation. Rarely does it concern the long hours, professional development and rather yeoman work it takes to become good at a job that straddles art and manufacturing. Here in the U.S., we recently celebrated Labor Day, a holiday to give thanks to all the effort our workforce provides to help our country and economy chug along. This kind of effort should never be lost on the behind-the-scenes staff who make the American beer industry what it is. I didn’t expect to follow this kind of thematic path when I sat down with Chris Leonard, brewmaster and operations manager at Heavy Seas Beer, not far outside of Baltimore. But over the course of our recent conversation, I became enamored with his perspective on recruitment, retention, and professional development. These are unsexy HR terms we don’t often think about when it comes to beer, but they’re also the key tenants to an otherwise apprentice profession that uses these learning opportunities to create some of the most thoughtful, innovative, and efficient brewers in the country. And there is a lot that goes into teaching a brewer, let alone running one of the most successful brewing operations in the country. Over the course of our conversation, Chris will offer you perspective on what it’s like to oversee a collection of young brewers, but the impacts and considerations he has to weigh when it comes to creating and improving some beloved brands. These are the kinds of conversations I love to have, when I can step back from the excitement of daily news and dig into the day-to-day issues that directly impact what happens to the beer in our glass. As we’ll come to learn, Chris’ voice is a worthwhile one to consider.

The weekly column is now a podcast! Since NEPA Scene launched to the public in September, the How to Pair Beer with Everything column has been a staple of the website, putting an entertaining and tongue-in-cheek twist on the typical beer review. Every Thursday, Derek Warren suggests the ideal setting, music, movies, and books to create the perfect experience with a delicious craft beer, and now he’ll expand upon that idea with NEPA Scene founder and editor Rich Howells during the podcast of the same name. With a beer being the only conversation starter needed, they’ll try a different brew each week and examine it through all the senses, diving into personal experiences and opinions, pop culture, news, or whatever comes to mind. While Derek is an experienced beer reviewer and aficionado (and co-host of the Beer Geeks Radio Hour on WILK 103.1 FM), Rich is more of a casual craft beer drinker (and co-host of the NEPA Scene Podcast), so they’ll both offer their own uncensored perspectives and welcome guests to share their own in future episodes. Every episode will stream on iTunes, SoundCloud, Stitcher, and nepascene.com. In this inaugural episode, we sample Blackbeard’s Breakfast by Heavy Seas Beer, a bourbon barrel-aged porter brewed with coffee, and discuss movies that scared us as kids, the unnecessary sanitizing of modern kids’ films and shows, how horror films focus on jump scares now over truly memorable scenes, the decline in quality of director Dario Argento’s films, wearing nostalgia glasses, the evolution of nerd culture in our lifetimes and the breakdown of counterculture, Internet critics who nitpick everything, being introduced to craft beers, and much more! http://nepascene.com/2015/06/how-pair-beer-everything-podcast-episode-1-blackbeards-breakfast-heavy-seas-beer/
