Caroline Sisson, Director of Marketing and Hospitality at Heavy Seas Brewing, discussed the brewery's 29-year history and plans for its 30th anniversary. She highlighted the rebranding from Clipper City to Heavy Seas in the early 2000s and the success of flagship beers like Loose Cannon and Winter Storm. Sisson also mentioned the challenges posed by COVID-19 and the importance of the taproom for fresh beer experiences. The brewery, which distributes in 16 states, is planning significant events and new beer releases for its 30th anniversary. Sisson also serves as the current president of the Brewers Association of Maryland.Subscribe to our YouTube ChannelFollow Chris on Instagram Like us on Facebook! The boys drink and review 2 award-winning beers from Heavy Seas, then special guest Longinus joins them at the bar to review Pedro Paramo, a Mexican novella. This is part of the P&C "shortcut to the classics" series. Pedro Paramo is a confusing book. The structure, timing, the use of punctuation, who's speaking, and even whether people are alive or dead is never quite certain. The book is named after the central character, Pedro Paramo, who is a powerful and tyrannical landowner in the town of Comala. He's also the father of Juan Preciado, the novel's primary protagonist, who is sent to Comala by Dolores Preciado, his dying mother, to get what they're owed. On his way to find Comala, Juan meets Abundio Martinez, another of Pedro's illegitimate sons. Comala is a ghost town in two senses. Not only is there almost no one there, it's full of ghosts. Rulfo's work is an example of magical realism, where seemingly impossible things happen and are accepted by the characters as if nothing special is happening. The story pursues themes like death and the supernatural, memory and time, despair and hoplelessness, power and corruption, religion and guilt, isolation and loneliness. The themes combine to create a haunting exploration of human existence, where the boundaries between life and death, past and present, are fluid. This is an interesting but difficult book. If you give it a try, plan to read it twice.
In the ever-evolving world of beer, maintaining a competitive edge can feel like navigating a stormy sea. Dan Kopman, former CEO of Heavy Seas and co-founder of Schlafly Beer, provides a seasoned perspective on the complexities and potential of the brewing industry."Early mover advantage is a double-edged sword," Kopman observes, a note of caution in his voice. "It's easy to gain but terribly difficult to maintain." This concept, familiar across various industries, holds particular resonance in the dynamic sphere of craft beer. Companies like Schlafly and Heavy Seas have ridden the initial waves of advantage, setting precedents in the market long before competitors caught wind. However, the real battle lies in sustaining that lead amid a burgeoning crowd of innovative brewers.Kopman's journey is marked by his significant roles in shaping the beer industry. Notably, he was instrumental in offering acclaimed beers like Young's Pubs' unique brews in London and Schlafly Beer in St. Louis. His broad experience fuels his understanding of the intricate dance between early adoption and lasting impact.Interestingly, the conversation isn't confined to traditional beer alone. Kopman acknowledges the rising influence of non-alcoholic (NA) beer, a niche that's garnering substantial attention. "Non-alcoholic beer has low penetration in the US compared to other regions," he notes. "But the global growth rate is in the high single digits." This trend suggests an emerging market ripe with possibilities for brewers willing to innovate and cater to changing consumer preferences.Kopman's insights also extend to broader demographic shifts and their impact on beer consumption. The interplay between immigration patterns and beer sales, for example, underscores the importance of understanding and addressing diverse consumer bases. "Brewers need to broaden their appeal," he advises, highlighting the necessity for cultural inclusivity in marketing strategies. Moreover, Kopman emphasizes the significance of strategic collaborations and experiential learning. At American University's Kogod School of Business, students engage in capstone projects that transition them into budding consultants. A notable collaboration with Right Proper Brewing Company in DC exemplifies how such partnerships can foster growth and innovation within the industry.Reflecting on market disruptions, Kopman draws a parallel between the beer industry and the tech world. "Consider the iPhone," he says. "It wasn't the first smartphone, but it achieved significant volume." Similarly, the NA beer market, while not new, holds potential for substantial growth and mainstream acceptance. In a rapidly changing market, staying ahead requires a blend of innovation, adaptability, and deep consumer understanding. For Dan Kopman, the journey through the beer landscape is as much about respecting tradition as it is about embracing the new waves of change. His experiences and insights offer valuable lessons for brewers and beer enthusiasts alike, navigating the ever-exciting and often tempestuous waters of the craft beer industry. Dan Kopman knows a thing or two about beer. Some of you may recognize the name Daniel Kopman. If you don't know his name, you undoubtedly know some of his work. Currently, Kopman is a Professor and Lecturer at American University's Kogod School of Business and, likely more notable to us beer nerds, a Senior Policy Advisor for the World Brewing Alliance. Previously he was the co-founder and CEO of Schlafly Beer in St. Louis, CEO of Heavy Seas, voting member of the Beer Institute, and board member of the Brewers Association. What is the World Brewing Alliance? In short, they're the trade association for trade associations. Over 70% of the world's beer production is represented by the WBA from small brewers to multinational conglomerates. Their mission is to corporate social responsibility, sustainability, responsible marketing practices, and invocation in the brewing sector. On the other side of things, they represent brewers to organizations like the UN and the World Health Organization. Bringing the two together their goal is for brewers to be responsible with their brewing and for health organizations to realize and support the cultural and economic benefits that brewers bring.Low alcohol, no alcohol, and changing trends in drinkingWe've talked about NA beer a good bit on the show and I think most of us know that lower alcohol beers are gaining popularity. Studies show younger generations are being more responsible in their consumption and aren't looking for a 15% stout. As the NA sector continues to grow, there are still plenty of people that will still want to grab a beer with some booze in it. Despite the growth we've seen in NA beer in America, our market is still way behind many other countries. Through technological and scientific advances more brewers are now offering high quality low and no alcohol beer. We've still got plenty of room to grow in this sector. Brewing around the worldCraft beer is booming in many places you may not think of. There's a growing scene in South Africa and you've probably enjoyed some South African hops in your hazy IPA. The scene in India is up and coming as well. Much like out locally sourced grains, hops, and fruits there's plenty of unique ingredients in these countries. Expanding the offerings of grains, hops, and other ingredients in local markets around the world is a boost for the environment as well as local economies. We got deep into some amazing topics this week. We enjoyed it and hope you do, too. Let us know. Cheers! Thanks for listening to Beer Guys Radio! Today, on Consuming the Craft, I had an insightful conversation with the head brewer of Yeehaw Brewing Company, Dan Rowe. We walked through his journey in the brewing industry, from his time at Dogfish Head to Heavy Seas to Yeehaw Brewing. Dan detailed their practical challenges, particularly with cold storage during peak months, and how they're adapting through innovation and expansion. We chewed over the craft of whiskey tasting and the physicality of brewery work. We delved into the mental health challenges within the industry, discussing initiatives such as beer festivals aimed at raising awareness and support.Dan Rowe brings a wealth of experience from his time brewing across the country. Currently spearheading operations at Yeehaw Brewing Company in Johnson City, he has been instrumental in their growth and success. With a keen eye for quality and a passion for the craft, Dan shared insights that only come with years of hands-on involvement. He's a prime example of someone who isn't just about beer but is equally invested in the well-being of those in the brewing community."A good beer isn't just about the flavor; it's the story and the community that surrounds it." ~Dan RoweToday on Consuming the Craft:· The necessity of a work-life balance for those in the brewing industry and using tools like the "worry tree" to maintain it.· The pivotal role that mental health plays in the productivity and longevity of brewery workers.· Importance of being proactive about wellness and seeking help when needed in high-stress environments.· Adaptation and preparedness are key to survival, as demonstrated by Yeehaw Brewing's timely acquisition of a canning line.· The physical challenges of brewing and why caring for one's health is vital.· The thoughtful consideration of a brewery's facility and capacity needs for efficient operation.· The emergence of non-alcoholic options and social activities as part of the industry's cultural shift.· Expanding the discussion around alcohol, recovery, and mental health within the brewing community.Contact Dan Rowe:- LinkedIn- Email Resources Mentioned:- Nepenthe Brewing Company- Yeehaw Brewing Company- McConnell FarmsThis episode is brought to you by… McConnell Farms - Taste the Way You Remember. The boys drink and review Winter Storm, "a Category 5 ale" from Heavy Seas, then discuss populism in the U.S., and the career of Javier Milei. Most politicians want to appear as an ordinary, regular person -- at least when they're campaigning -- but a "populist" adds a critical element of a contrast between the people and the elite establishment, whom they ridicule or demonize. Populism might become more prevalent when there's more of a disparity between the rulers and the common man. Populism is not left-wing or right-wing. Donald Trump is a populist, but so is Bernie Sanders. Populists appeal directly to the people and tend to bypass the establishment. Left-wing populism has an economic focus and emphasizes economic and class struggle. They talk about redistributing resources, and are against corporations. Right-wing populism has more of a focus on cultural and nationalistic issues. It tends to be anti immigrant. There seems to have been more right-wing populism recently. This may be because of the growing power of the entrenched bureaucracy. One criticism of populism is that you're exchanging the educated, elite expert with the uneducated WalMart shoppers. The truth is that the educated elite don't always get better results. U.S. education tanked after we created the Department of Education. Javier Milei is a libertarian populist who recently won power in Argentina. He promises to drastically cut government spending and eliminate half of the government ministries. "The thievery of politics is over," he said. It will be interesting to see how well he does.

At Maroon PR we like to say that we are the agency that clients want to have a beer with. In this season of SPIN is a Four Letter Word, we are doing just that: having a beer with guests as we discuss everything from hot topics in PR to how relationships drive growth. Join us for the journey - Cheers! Episode 1 features the Godfather of Baltimore beer, Hugh Sission, Founder and CEO of Heavy Seas Beer. It was 1982, when the idea first crossed Hugh Sisson's mind. At the time, he was running the only craft beer bar in Baltimore with his father. He couldn't help but wonder if he could make his own beer, or if it was even possible. It was the question that would alter his life forever. In 2003, Clipper City introduced the Heavy Seas line of beers. They were bold beers meant to challenge the average beer drinker-- high alcohol with incredible flavor. In 2010, the great success of the Heavy Seas line of beers was the deciding factor in adopting the name Heavy Seas for the brewery. The rest, as they say, is history. In this episode we discuss Hugh's keys to success, about taking risks, and his approach to business.
The boys drink and review Glacial Drift, a spiced winter ale from Heavy Seas, then discuss housing, and why the prices are so high. What factors have caused home prices to go so high? And how do regular families afford these McMansions? It seems the ratio of income to house prices has changed radically since the 1970s. Part of it is the assumption of two incomes in each family. Also, we have bigger houses with fewer people in them. Houses get bigger while families get smaller. If you track the change in wages vs. the price of homes, inflation-adjusted wages have stayed about the same since the 1960, but houses are twice as expensive. Are government regulations causing the increase in home prices? Or is it some other factor?

Hugh Sisson, founder of Heavy Seas Beer, got his start running Sisson's craft beer bar with his father. In 1986, Sisson met with local legislators to push for the legalization of brew pubs in Baltimore City. A year after he left Sisson's Brewpub, he started brewing in 1995 as Clipper City Brewing Company. In 2003, Clipper City introduced the Heavy Seas line of beers, and in 2010 the brewery rebranded under the name Heavy Seas. Two years later, Chris Leonard joined the team as Brewmaster, and expansion of the brewery commenced. Today, Heavy Seas is enjoyed by beer lovers nationwide and continues to grow and develop new, daring beers for the world to enjoy. Be fearless. Be bold. Be independent. The boys drink and review two awful beers from Heavy Seas, then discuss gay parenting in general, with a particular emphasis on the recent discussion on the topic between Jordan Peterson and Dave Rubin. Jordan Peterson regularly encourages people to take on more responsibility in their lives, including getting married and having children. Dr. Peterson's lectures had an impact on Dave Rubin, a gay man, who wondered, "what about me? How do I fit in?" Peterson and Rubin talk about all the adjustments Rubin had to make to try to make this apply to his life with his gay partner. Does it even work? Can all the normal paths and expectations in heterosexual relationships and marriage simply transfer over to a gay relationship? If meaning and purpose in life are so closely tied to marriage and children, how does this work for homosexuals? And should it? Is it right to subject children to this experiment so that gay parents can feel self-actualized?

Our guest this week is Jeff Dean, and we're psyched to have him on the show. Jeff is one of those musicians that just cannot seem to sit still for too long. He's a current member of the following bands: Dead Ending, Airstream Futures, Heavy Seas, Her Head's On Fire, All Eyes West, Tight Night, and Moral Mazes.... phew. He is also an alumni of many other bands, including the likes of The Bomb & Noise By Numbers. As he points out in this episode, it's just something that feels natural to him to have so much going on, something that many musicians would struggle to juggle (hahaha, struggle juggle - new ska band???) On top of being a busy musician, Jeff is also a recording and mixing engineer, working with a ton of rad bands over the years, including Typesetter, Wet Tropics, and more. He is also active in the skateboard scene, having spent time in his younger years as a sponsored member of several teams, which we discuss in the episode. We talk about his musical timeline, a bit about his love of recording, and we of course dig into some bands that he thinks need to be on your radar, as well as his 5 desert island album pics. There is also a song/video from All Eyes West at the end of the podcast, so stay tuned for that All Eyes West - https://alleyeswest.bandcamp.com/ Her Head's on Fire - https://herheadsonfire.bandcamp.com/ Dead Ending - https://deadending.bandcamp.com/ Airstream Futures - https://airstreamfutureslrr.bandcamp.com/ Tight Night - https://tightnightlrr.bandcamp.com/ Moral Mazes - https://moralmazes.bandcamp.com/ To hear some of the music mentioned on this and our previous episodes, check out and follow this playlist on Spotify: https://bit.ly/3oI01ZU Question The Answers is co-sponsored by The Bad Copy and Sell The Heart Records, be sure to follow them as well to stay up to date on music news, reviews, and to check out the releases on our label.
