This history focuses on five foundational members of the group and their enduring bond, including Lydia Abarça, the first Black prima ballerina with a major international dance company, the first Black ballerina on the cover of Dance magazine, and an Essence cover star; and her equally accomplished friends, Gayle McKinney, Sheila Rohan, Marcia Sells, and Karlya Shelton. Valby is a frequent contributor to Vanity Fair, and has also published work in The New York Times, O Magazine, Glamour, Fast Company, and EW, where she spent fifteen years writing about culture. Shelly Power brings to Philadelphia Ballet, formerly Pennsylvania Ballet, her experiences in various artistic and executive leadership roles at Prix de Lausanne in Switzerland and Houston Ballet Academy. Since joining Philadelphia Ballet in 2018, Ms. Power has restructured the organization's administrative functions with new, innovative partnerships, with the goal of promoting that ballet is for everyone. Ms. Power received a Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies, with a focus on business, psychology, and fine arts from the University of Houston. Krystine Beneke started her athletic career at a very young age, dancing for the Houston Ballet Academy in Houston. Simultaneously, she began running with her father through their neighborhood. Eventually, Krystine began competing in middle-school and high-school track events. In middle school, she competed in 400s and hurdles. In high school, she enjoyed a variety of distances and events from 300 hurdles to 4 x 4 to two milers. After college, she began a career in banking—and started to focus on longer-distance races, starting with a New York Road Runners 15K that she ran with a friend. She found she had a natural ability as a runner, and completed 15 full marathons and 26 half-marathons, all while building a start-up digital IP acquisition company. Eventually, Krystine went on to qualify for and run the Boston Marathon in 2014, with a PR time of 2:59:47. Although Krystine has put running for competition aside for the moment, she has found joy and success in other pursuits, such as painting.

Described by The New York Times as “one of America's most peculiarly original dance poets,” choreographer Trey McIntyre has made a habit of defying expectations throughout his career. A graduate of UNCSA, he went on to the Houston Ballet Academy where upon finishing his training, he was given the position of Choreographic Apprentice at the Ballet, a post created specifically for him.As his freelance career started to take off, he did something completely unexpected. Rather than tether himself to a large coastal metropolis or a European capital, he decided to settle down in Boise, ID, where he created Trey McIntyre Projects, a vibrant dance company that quickly garnered the world's attention, spending up to 22 weeks a year on national and international touring. Then 10 years later in 2014, at the height of the company's success, Trey decided to fold the company and return to freelancing. He continues to be an in-demand choreographer around the world — just before the pandemic he created works for Queensland Ballet, San Francisco Ballet and The Washington Ballet — but lately he has also been diving into a new artistic passion. He has a photographic practice, creating kinetic and often erotic tableaux of the human body, that he supports through a network of fans via a Patreon account. In 2018 he also directed “Gravity Hero,” a documentary about his journey with his Boise-based dance company. In this interview with Pier Carlo Talenti, Trey discusses why and how he has always pushed himself past comfort zones in order to feed his voracious curiosity and wonders what it will take for dance companies to remain equally curious and nimble in the digital age.www.treycool.com

In this episode we welcome Vicki Attard - the creator of the My Pointe training method designed to help ballet dancers improve their pointe work technique.    Vicki is internationally recognized for her many achievements and contributions to the field of dance. A professional ballet dancer, most notably revered for her career as a former Principal Artist of the Australian Ballet Vicki Attard has worked with the world's leading choreographers, dancers and dance companies and received numerous scholarships and awards. She was interim director of the Houston Ballet Academy and has assisted in the staging of many ballets and dance productions.Vicki is currently based in Sydney, where she teaches ballet to pre-professional and professional students. She regularly collaborates with dance schools and organizations as an adjudicator and guest teacher. In addition to her successful dance career and the creation of My Pointe, Vicki also co-produced My Beginner Point with Physiotherapist Lisa Howe. The focus of each of these programs is a safe dance practice approach to the instruction of pointe work that assists teachers in preparing both students who are yet to be en-pointe and those who already are to keep their feet well conditioned. This podcast episode host Daniela Di Fabio will explore the relationship between the feet and the lower limbs and the effects these have on the alignment of the body. Albeit from a ballet perspective, there are many correlations between foot conditioning for dances and foot conditioning in the Pilates Method and are transferable to the instruction of Pilates to serve as food for thought for those of us interested in foot alignment, strength and control. The PAA strives to continue promoting the expansion of the Pilates Method as a professional and valued healthcare and fitness discipline. DANSARE, BALETTCHEF. We are joined by guest, Randall Flinn, founder and artistic director of Ad Deum Dance Company in Houston, TX.  He shares his incredible testimony of how he used dance all his life to run from the monsters in his heart as a result of his parent's broken marriage but when he found Christ, God transformed his heart and his dance career.  At one point he dreamt of performing on Broadway but God rerouted him and he found himself dancing on a mountain in Haiti for the poorest children in the world where God revealed that He was taking Randall on "the narrow way."  That's just one of his many transforming stories he shares in the interview! Randall began his dance training in Houston over twenty five years ago with Glenn Hunsucker, Camille Long Hill, Dina Vail and Patsy Swayze. His most recent modern dance influences have come from studies with The José Limón Dance Company and Steve Rooks, former principal dancer with Martha Graham. He has taught and choreographed locally as a guest artist for the Houston Ballet Academy, The Episcopal High School, Houston Met Dance Company, Joan Karff Dance Company, The High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, and North Harris Performing Arts Dance Company.  Nationally, he has served as guest faculty and choreographer for Cirque Du Soleil’s-Alegria, Ballet Magnificat, Belhaven University, Friends University, Project Dance NYC, LA, and Sydney, Australia, as well as Hillsong and Dance Revolution Conventions. Having lived throughout Europe and Asia for ten years, Randall has also been a guest artist for Hong Kong Ballet, City Contemporary – Hong Kong, Guanzhou Modern Dance Company – China, Xaris Danz Europe, and Youth With a Mission International Schools of the Arts.
