The phenomenal pianist Stewart Goodyear, known as both an improviser and composer, famously played all 32 of Beethoven's sonatas in one sitting, when he turned 32 years old. In predictably jaw-dropping fashion, Stewart then turned his electrifying powers to Tchaikovsky's 'The Nutcracker,' with his own transcription of the complete ballet. (The album, released in October 2015, was chosen by the New York Times as one of the best classical music recordings of 2015.) He has since recorded Ravel piano works, his own "Callaloo" Suite and Piano Sonata, and Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue. He was supposed to have toured with Chineke! The premiere of Tchaikovsky's seminal ballet ‘The Nutcracker', on 18th December, 1892, at the Imperial Mariinsky Theatre, Saint Petersburg. It was NOT a hit. The composer, who thought the Alexander Dumas source material was slight and childish, only agreed to write the piece if it was shown in a double-bill with his opera, ‘Iolanta'. He certainly didn't want to repeat the critical failure of his earlier work: a certain ‘Swan Lake'. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly explain how a trip to Paris inspired one of ballet's most famous moments; check out some of the reviews of the day, when body-shaming ballerinas was evidently not discouraged; and explain how Czar Alexander was (literally) catered for in the stage directions… Further Reading: • "The Nutcracker's" disturbing origin story: Why this was once the world's creepiest ballet' (Salon, 2014): https://www.salon.com/2014/12/24/the_nutcrackers_disturbing_origin_story_why_this_was_once_the_worlds_creepiest_ballet/ • ‘Sweet holiday staple 'The Nutcracker' may be darker than you think' (The Washington Post, 2022): https://www.washingtonpost.com/theater-dance/2022/11/25/nutcracker-history-russian-imperialism/ • ‘Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky / Nina Kaptsova - Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy' (2010): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wz_f9B4pPtg This episode first premiered in 2022, for members of

The John Bishop Go Fund Me Japan Move and Explanation Building Fortunes Radio with Peter Mingils. https://www.gofundme.com/f/new-start-in-tokyo Here's more of whatr you will here Hi my name is John Bishop and I am fundraising to get help for my new start in Tokyo, Japan. I actually lived, worked and raised a family in Japan from 1988-1998. There I danced, taught and did ballet choreography for a number of companies and schools around Japan. I returned to the Washington in 1999 and founded my own ballet academy. For 21 wonderful years I was the Artistic Director for Northwest Ballet Theater and Academy bringing classical ballet productions like 'The Nutcracker', 'Sleeping Beauty' and 'Swan Lake' to audiences in NW Washington. Then the Covid-19 pandemic hit and two seasons of performances were cancelled and studio classes for my dancers could not be held. After many efforts to hold on through the pandemic, Northwest Ballet had to close our studios and end our productions. This left my wife and I without a permanent income. I am returning to Japan after 22 years as an Japanese-English interpreter and language coach for a small company. Who doesn't love the classic annual holiday tradition of taking your family to see The Nutcracker? It has been the pleasure of Boulder Ballet for more than 35 years to produce The Nutcracker with a professional company along with over eighty aspiring young dancers from our community to present this magical show. Unfortunately, due to the current COVID-19 environment, the Nutcracker performances with the Boulder Philharmonic and Boulder Ballet, to be held at Macky Auditorium November 26-28, have been canceled. We look forward to returning to Macky together for an incredible Nutcracker in 2022! The good news is that Boulder Ballet still has an opportunity to perform The Nutcracker at Vance Brand Auditorium in Longmont, December 3-5. To make this production with the Longmont Symphony Orchestra (partners of over two decades) possible, we need your help. Due to the revenue loss from the Macky performances we need your support to help offset the costs of this production. Should we fail to raise these funds The Nutcracker will be put on hold altogether until 2022. The good news? We have several generous foundations that want to see this productions happen and have offered a $25,000 match - our goal is a total of $50,000 so we are already halfway there! Please consider making a donation today and help us bring the Boulder and Longmont communities together to experience the joy of The Nutcracker live, in-person after a year and a half of canceled seasons, shuttered venues, and furloughed artists. We humbly thank you for your support and look forward to celebrating with you in December! https://www.coloradogives.org/theNutcracker?step=step1

A special gift for the Holidays! Our DANCEmber month's Creative Interview sparks with elegance and grace featuring the Principal Dancer of the American Ballet Theatre, Herman Cornejo. Our Artistic Directors Daniela Pavan and Tommaso Cartia interview the extraordinary dancer who American Journalist from The New Yorker Joan Acocella addressed as; "the most technically accomplished male ballet dancer in the United States;" and critic Claudia La Rocco as "not a fairy-tale prince," but "something more interesting, and more useful, really, for ballet: a believable, 21st-century hero." The Argentine-born ballet sensation is the pure incarnation of the essence of movement and of the courage, perseverance, and discipline, required to be breakthrough in the ballet world. He is someone who also faced and fought, with proud and resilience, some of the canons of the world of ballet that were against him. A citizen of the world, Herman shared with us also his thoughts about being an artist and an immigrant in the U.S., in an open-hearted conversation that showed all of his honesty and humanity, those qualities that make him not a far-away prince put on a pedestal for his audience, but someone who the younger generation can perceive as a positive role-model.

If you've ever seen "The Nutcracker," you know a good part of the second act takes place in the beautiful Land of Sweets. Clara and the Prince travel there and meet dancing delicacies from around the world--candy canes from Russia, chocolate from Spain, and the famous Sugar Plum Fairy. But one of the sequences, as historically performed, hits a more sour note: The Chinese tea dance. The segment often features stereotyped caricatures of Chinese people. Dancers wear rice paddy hats and deep black eyeliner overextended out to their temples. They perform movements that reflect white people's stereotypes of Asian dance, rather than any connection to real Chinese culture. These dancers (and most of their audiences) are usually white. But a man named Phil Chan is leading a movement to change this part of 'The Nutcracker." His campaign is called Final Bow for Yellowface. And lots of the country's biggest ballet companies are now rethinking the way they stage the Chinese Tea Dance--including Louisville's. WFPL's Ashlie Stevens wrote about the scene and the campaign to change it. She joins us today on Recut.

The hosts give their "Go or No" votes for today's big movie releases for 'Bohemian Rhapsody', 'Nobody's Fool' and 'The Nutcracker and The Four Realms' on today's #FilmFridays! 'Bohemian Rhapsody' and 'Nobody's Fool' | Season 3, Episode 30 Bohemian Rhapsody Bohemian Rhapsody is a foot-stomping celebration of Queen, their music and their extraordinary lead singer Freddie Mercury, who defied stereotypes and shattered convention to become one of the most beloved entertainers on the planet. The film traces the meteoric rise of the band through their iconic songs and revolutionary sound, their near-implosion as Mercury's lifestyle spirals out of control, and their triumphant reunion on the eve of Live Aid, where Mercury, facing a life-threatening illness, leads the band in one of the greatest performances in the history of rock music. In the process, cementing the legacy of a band that were always more like a family, and who continue to inspire outsiders, dreamers and music lovers to this day. Nobody's Fool Trying to get back on her feet, wild child Tanya (Tiffany Haddish) looks to her buttoned-up, by the book sister Danica (Tika Sumpter) to help her get back on track. As these polar opposites collide - with hilarious and sometimes disastrous results - Tanya discovers that Danica's picture-perfect life - including her mysterious boyfriend - may not be what it seems.
