Sufjan Stevens' 2005 concept album “Illinois” enjoys cult status for its lush orchestrations and inventive lyrics. Tony Award-winner and Resident Choreographer of the New York City Ballet, Justin Peck, has transformed the album, with Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright of 2018's “Fairview” Jackie Sibblies Drury, into a full-length theatrical performance that blends dance, theater, live music and storytelling into a breathtakingly emotional coming-of-age journey. “Illinoise” was presented at the Bard Fisher Center in summer of 2023 as a SummerScape commission. The Bard staging and the off-Broadway production at Park Avenue Armory earlier this year were sold out, highly praised, and “Illinoise” transferred to the St. James Theatre on Broadway this month. Opening night was April 24 and the limited engagement is scheduled to end on August 10. This morning, it was announced that “Illinoise” has been nominated for 4 Tony Awards.

“Dance Talk” ® with Joanne Carey and special guest, Lauren Lovette, Resident Choreographer for Paul Taylor Dance Company In this episode of “Dance Talk” ® with Joanne Carey, join host Joanne Carey as she chats with Special Guest, Lauren Lovette. Joanne sat in on a rehearsal of a new piece for all male dancers that Lauren created for The Paul Taylor Dance Company prior to this episode. Here they not only talk about this new piece, but Lauren's career as a ballerina and the transition Lauren made into the modern/contemporary dance world as well as her current position as resident choreographer. During their conversation, you will also hear that they share the belief that dance belongs to everyone. Lauren Lovette personifies the intertwining of dance and choreography, moving seamlessly from one to the other. Her work has been commissioned and performed by leading dance companies and festivals, including the New York City Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, the Vail International Dance Festival, American Ballet Theatre Studio Company, the Paul Taylor Dance Company, Nevada Ballet Theatre, as well as a self-produced evening entirely of her own work in which she also danced, Why It Matters. She began creating dance as a ballet student, for a 2007 choreographic workshop showing at the School of American Ballet (SAB). Another ballet, for the 2008 workshop, was soon followed by her being selected to create a work for the 2009 New York Choreographic Institute. In 2016, Lovette, then a relatively new principal dancer, was asked to choreograph her first piece, that then premiered at the New York City Ballet Fall Fashion Gala. In 2017, she choreographed for the Vail International Dance Festival, the NYCB Fall Season Gala, and the American Ballet Theatre Studio Company. She was awarded the Virginia B. Toulmin Fellowship at the Center for Ballet and the Arts at New York University in fall of 2018, and a year later created a work for the 2019 Fall Fashion Gala at NYCB. Her work at NYCB is noteworthy, forging a path for other female choreographers in an area of dance that has notably been predominantly male.Born in Thousand Oaks, CA, Lovette began studying ballet at the age of 11 at the Cary Ballet Conservatory in Cary, NC. She enrolled at SAB as a full-time student in 2006. In October 2009, Ms. Lovette became an apprentice with NYCB and joined the Company as a member of the corps de ballet in September 2010. Promoted to soloist in February 2013 and to principal dancer in June 2015, she stepped down from her position at the company in 2021 to embark on a career devoted to dance and choreography in more equal measure. Ms. Lovette received the Clive Barnes Award for dance in December 2012 and was the 2012-2013 recipient of the Janice Levin Award. Our special guest was Julianna Rubio Slager. Julianna is the Artistic Director, Co-founder, and Resident Choreographer of Ballet 5:8, one of the leading faith-based ballet companies in the United States. Episode 71: Yo-EL Cassell was born in Schenectady, NY with a nerve deafness and discovered that movement at the age of 3 was his organic expressive channel for his personal and creative identity. Instead of his hearing loss getting in the way, he allowed the loss to gratefully show him the way of connecting to all of the five senses (sight, hearing, touch, taste, smell) of human life. His mission, as a performer, director, choreographer, movement director, educator, mentor, and human being, is to provide the same accessible physical entry point to other's inner selves that he supportively received as a child and throughout life. A recipient of the Lotte Kaliski Award for Gifted Artists, Yo-EL Cassell is currently Head of/Assistant Professor of Movement at Boston University College of Fine Arts School of Theatre. He was formerly Resident Choreographer of Commonwealth Shakespeare Company. This week on 5.6.7.EIGHT, Aleksandra interviews Christopher Stuart, Resident Choreographer for the Nashville Ballet. Stuart, a graduate of the North Carolina School of the Arts, spent an astounding 16 seasons at the Nashville Ballet, ultimately rising to the ranks of principal dancer. Christopher describes his choreography as “free and limitless,” and his work has been featured in many companies across the American Southeast, while being praised by various dance publications. As a choreographer of seven years, Stuart has learned much about the nature of dance — lessons which retroactively shine light on his experiences as a dancer — and, on the podcast, he spends a great deal of time discussing these learnings. During his conversation, Christopher recaps his journey as a dancer, talks about not taking rejection too personally, discusses his approach to choreography, and so much more. Moving Quotes: “I just kept pushing myself. I loved coming in [to the Nashville Ballet], knowing that there was always something more to learn. Even to the last day before I retired, I was always learning something." "Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do it. If you want this career in your life that makes you happy, then you should do it." “I think dance, in general, is always ever-evolving. We have to evolve with the times. We have to adapt to our world." “When I cast my ballets, I don’t always cast the person with the prettiest feet or the prettiest legs. I look at the movement that I’m creating and the people that I think best suit that role or piece, no matter of ranks or anything." “You’re not always going to be what the choreographer or stager is looking for." “My family gives me strength and ideas, honestly, as a choreographer to create new work." “One of the pros — and cons, really — of going to a dance boarding school was that you had to grow up really fast… But the biggest pro is that you’re surrounded by many like-minded people… It was amazing seeing all of the artistry at [North Carolina School of the Arts], and you’re around it nonstop." Bullet Points (w/ timestamps) - Highlighting key topics discussed: 3:14: Christopher discusses his start as a choreographer and how he approaches the process. 8:40: Christopher retells his beginnings in the world of dance and the dancer, in particular, who inspired him to pursue the stage. 11:47: Stuart discusses the pros and cons of attending a boarding school for dance. 13:42: Christopher shares about his time with the Nashville Ballet and how he believes he has been able to successfully rise through the ranks of that company. 14:27: Stuart looks back on a moment when he didn’t achieve a role he was aiming for but how now, as a choreographer, he sees that that situation wasn’t truly a rejection. 18:20: Christopher explains his opportunity to create for the New York City Choreography Institute. 20:49: Christopher — a husband and father — discusses the challenge of balancing his work and his family. 22:25: Stuart explains the importance of children’s arts education and the main lesson that he learned as a child during his arts training. 23:53: Christopher discusses the future of dance and how the art must evolve with the times, while still remaining true to what makes it unique and timeless. 28:40: Stuart gives some important advice to any young dancers wanting to pursue a career in ballet. Choreographer Makeda Thomas (of Roots and Wings Movement!) called from Trinidad to speak with me about the tragic killing of her colleague, Augusto Cuvilas, one of Mozambique's most celebrated dance artists. Although the sound quality of this phone interview is not ideal, the information she presents is very important, and time is of the essence. Makeda has been invited to join with South African choreographer Boyzie Cekwana to complete a project that the three were working on at the time of Cuvilas's death. For more information on how you can help, visit Makeda's site at www.makedathomas.org. Makeda Thomas is from Trinidad & Tobago and has presented work at HARLEM Stage/Aaron Davis Hall, Dance Theater Workshop, The Brooklyn Academy of Music, the Chicago Women's Performance Arts Festival, Maputo's Teatro Africa, Caribbean Contemporary Arts (CCA7), and as a Cultural Envoy for the U.S. Department of State. Her choreography has been commissioned by 651 ARTS Black Dance: Tradition & Transformation (2007) and received awards from the United States Embassy (2006 & 2005), Puffin Foundation (2005), New York State Council on the Arts (2005), Bossak-Heilbron Charitable Foundation (2005), Arts International (2003), Yellowfox Foundation (2006), and the National AIDS Council of Moçambique (2005).
