Host: Philip Brown; Founder of The Negotiation Club Guest: Mohammed Teleb; Negotiation Practitioner “You can only expand the pie in negotiation when both sides understand what each needs from the deal!” Episode Overview: In this episode of The Negotiation Club Podcast we're thrilled to be joined by Mohammed Teleb, a global commercial director and expert negotiator. Together, we'll explore how you can use visualisation and empathy to unlock better outcomes in high-stakes negotiations. Whether you're dealing with complex contracts or just looking to sharpen your negotiation skills, this episode is packed with real-world strategies that you can put into practice right away. Key Negotiation Lessons from the Discussion: Visualisation for Clarity: Mohammed emphasised the power of visualisation in explaining complex contractual terms like liquidated damages. By narrating real-world scenarios, he could help the counterpart understand the practical implications of the terms, such as how penalties for delays affect operations. Shifting Perspectives (Empathy): One of the core techniques discussed was the need to get the counterpart to “step into your shoes.” This approach fosters empathy, helping the other party see how the terms affect your side of the negotiation and opening the door for collaborative solutions. Balancing Penalties with Incentives: A key theme was balancing punitive elements like liquidated damages with positive incentives (i.e., “the carrot and the stick”). Mohammed and Philip explored how to turn a purely punitive framework into one that also offers rewards for exceeding expectations, such as early delivery bonuses. Tailoring Communication: The importance of tailoring communication based on cultural, regulatory, and individual backgrounds was discussed. Mohammed gave an example of government audits creating stringent requirements that had to be carefully navigated with empathy and understanding. Preparation: Another vital lesson was the importance of preparation before engaging in negotiations. Knowing the other party's business, context, and personal circumstances can help avoid misunderstandings and build trust. Emotional Intelligence and Storytelling: Mohammed highlighted the use of emotional intelligence and storytelling to humanise negotiations. By making abstract terms relatable, such as through analogies to everyday life or workplace scenarios, negotiators can create rapport and reduce friction. This episode is packed with practical examples and actionable tips for both seasoned professionals and those new to the field. Tune in to learn how to bring empathy, clarity, and effective communication to your negotiations! How to make abstract contract terms like liquidated damages relatable using storytelling. The importance of getting the counterpart to “step into your shoes” to foster collaboration. Balancing penalties with incentives to drive better performance. The critical role of preparation and understanding cultural or organisational nuances in negotiation. Introducing the “In My Shoes” Negotiation Card In this episode, we're excited to introduce the “In My Shoes” Negotiation Card, a tool designed to help you practice and master the powerful technique of getting the other party to understand your perspective. This card encourages you to use storytelling and visualisation to illustrate how a negotiation issue impacts you, fostering empathy and collaboration. Whether you're negotiating contract terms, timelines, or payments, the “In My Shoes” card will guide you through exercises that challenge you to clearly communicate your position and create win-win outcomes. Perfect for both beginners and seasoned professionals, this card is an essential addition to your negotiation toolkit.

Week 24 - More New Things? All the links are at https://linktr.ee/barbarafaison CHECK OUT THE NATIONAL MEDITATION PLAYLIST ON YOUTUBE I'm back reminding you to try and do new things. In week 14 I shared my Float Spa experience, you can check that out on my blog at barbarafaison.com. This weekend I did quite a few new things. On Friday night Kym, Artis, and I went to a story telling event called, In My Shoes, to see Terri Nicole share an excerpt from her one woman show in progress. Terri's story was hilarious, sweet, and engaging. It was a fun night and we got to hear stories, music, and comedy at the event. Saturday night for dinner my hubby and I stopped by a NEW local restaurant, and guess what, they were playing salsa music! Yay for trying new restaurants in your neighborhood! It was a WIN WIN WIN, threefor. I got to do little seated salsa DANCING whilst enjoying time with TD and eating food that I didn't have to cook. LOL.I really love sharing practical ways to bring mindfulness into our daily lives. And for the third new thing, I was one of the presenters for a Mindfulness program, Flowers and Fruit curated by Helen Nde. On the program, Helen and I shared how to manage thoughts and emotions along with a practice session. I will be back with Ndine Lockhart of Plant Nomad to conclude the Spring Series on June 25 at 3pm. If you are local to Atlanta and you are interested you can find out more at unifiedwellness.org under events. Summer is off to a bang with trying new things for me. I love being able to back up what I suspect with science, yay science! I enjoyed this short blog post by GardenUnity - that listed four benefits of trying new things: Time becomes more memorable. Fear takes a backseat and your sense of adventure grows. You'll get to know yourself better. Creativity and brain power will be stimulated. I totally agree with all of these and there are even more benefits to trying and doing new things, that's for another time. You never know where your love for something may start - my 25 + years of dancing salsa started with going out dancing with a friend, trying something new. I fell in love with the music, dancing and made lifelong friends that I have traveled with to dance salsa! Are you trying new things? Any new experiences to share? Even simple things such as trying new foods and taking a different route to your destination can be helpful for your overall well-being. I'd love to know what new things you are doing or trying. Bobbin and Eric host Lakayana, Executive Director of Word is Bond, who works with young Black men and boys on leadership development, and more notably, spearheaded walking tours around Portland called “In My Shoes,” where their ambassadors led community members, including elected officials through Portland neighborhoods through their experiences as a Black man. Bobbin, Eric, and Lakayana process the white supremacist terrorism in Buffalo, and how it is not an isolated incident, but a feature of the the value system of the country. They talk about the mainstreaming of extremist and white supremacist ideology, and how this will lead to more violence. Lakayana talks about how centralizing community well-being should be the focus rather than the police. Lastly, Eric, Bobbin, and Lakayana talk about why police "unions" prevent police accountability and ask the question, are they really "unions."

This week on Minnesota Native News, the sound of young people growing and community healing. Laurie Stern reports on a new production that will soon be available for all to see--Marie:This week on Minnesota Native News, the sound of young people growing and community healing. Laurie Stern reports on a new production that will soon be available for all to see.TAPE My name is Jennifer Cortez. I'm 17. I'm from Leech Lake. And today we are starting our filming for our play in my shoes.IN MY SHOES IS THE LATEST PRODUCTION FROM The IKIDOWIN Youth Ensemble, a theater troupe of Native who live in the Twin Cities.JC: In my shoes is a suicide prevention play. We talk about depression, anxiety, a lot of different mental illnesses. And we make sure that people know that these are real life, illnesses, and that a lot of people do have them and that our friends can have them. And it's really hard to sometimes see. But in the end, it's better to help and to receive that help and ask for that help.At 17, Jennifer Cortez is a mentor to younger cast members. Ikidowin recruited 10 new actors this summer. Liana Star Kier from White Earth is 12. LSK: I take pride in my indigenous culture. So I'm, I'm trying to stay in the community.I have two characters. I'm a bully in one and I put other characters down. I don't like that. But my other part is, I'm a guest speaker in a classroom. My elder and I do teaching about breath.Like how to relax yourself like, um, yeah.(scene sound, fade under)The theater troupe has been practicing most of the summer, building a sense of community and self-confidence. This is 11-year-old Joseph GreenJG: If you just like practice and practice more, acting can get more easier. Because when I first started, I was very shy, like, I couldn't project very well. But I'm better at projected now.(sound: direction from Kirby)The Ikidowin program has been around for decades, a project of the Minneapolis-based Indigenous People's Task Force. Curtis Kirby III has directed many of its productions. This one is different because it's being staged at a real theater. we're on our first day at the southern theatre, and we're doing tech, and I think it's just awesome to just be in this position, because hopefully, this won't be so irregular. This is our first time in a real theater, with lights, and, you know, we're actually filming it.So I hope that we have more of these experiences, and that we continue to be able to do this work at this capacity and give other youth opportunities.Kirby, as everyone calls him, says the inner-city youth he works with don't have access to extracurricular programs that kids from wealthier families do. Theater, art and sports are often cut when budgets are tight. Ikidowin is a way to provide some of those opportunities. Not only is In My Shoes being performed at a professional theater, it is being filmed so it can have a life online. 16-year-old Nalia Segura is from Leech Lake.NG: not many people go out because of delta. And like they haven't gotten their vaccine yet. So they don't really go out to places with a lot of people. So as filming it, and like being able to put it on YouTube will allow like more people to see it.KirbyThese stories affect people where I'm from, Bois Forte. Youth grew up in those reservations that might not get this education elsewhere, because they're from small towns, and that's not really a focus, or they don't talk about these things. All across the state, you know, and, um, you know, youth as young as fifth gradeare attempting suicide or committing suicide, you know, until it's a very heavy price. But I think, that's what we're here to do. We're here to tell stories to our people, we're here to heal our people. In My Shoes will be available in September on Ikidowin's new YouTube channel, IkidoFireSema. For MNN I'm LS

In this episode we hear from Maria Puccini the Executive Director and Co-Founder of In My Shoes. Maria shares a story that is my favorite story shared on the show so far! It illustrates many traits that make someone successful in development: an enormous amount of passion, humility, the ability to take painful constructive criticism, a deep desire to put the needs of those your organization serves ahead of your own, and persistence. All I can say is WOW! I am excited and can’t wait for you all to hear this incredible story from Maria.
Listen as two In My Shoes regulars talk about how they sometimes feel they may have missed a great opportunity worrying about the "what ifs."
