"Catholic Counseling" is a weekly segment of Morning Light where we've assembled a panel of experts to help Catholics maintain good mental health. From Cornerstone Psychological Associates in Boise, we welcome back Dr. Joe Lipetzky, as he continues to go through the book "Character Building" by David Isaacs. Today's chapter covers the topic of "Industriousness" and how we can prevent our kids from becoming lazy - rather, wanting to help out around the house or help do something nice for others.

Diving into the life, lessons, and greatness of John Wooden from his book, Wooden on Leadership-----2:30 - Definition of SuccessSuccess is peace of mind which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you made the effort to become the best of which you are capable.3:50 - Dad's adviceDon't worry about whether you're better than somebody else, but never cease trying to be the best you can become. You have control over that; the other you don't.”Be true to yourself Make each day your masterpiece Help othersDrink deeply from good books including the good bookMake friendship a fine art.Build a shelter against a rainy dayPray for guidance and give thanks for your blessings everyday 7:00 - EnthusiasmSuccess is unattainable without enthusiasm…enthusiasm comes from your heart being in your work...You will perish without hard work, without industriousness. Industriousness is not possible without enthusiasm. Success is unattainable without both of them.11:25 - Eagerness vs willing to sacrificeInitially, I defined team spirit as a “willingness to sacrifice personal interest or glory for the welfare of all,” but there was something in the definition that bothered me, something not quite right…When it came to team spirit, willingness was not enough; eagerness was the exact description of what I sought in myself and in those I coached. A willingness to be selfless suggests a begrudging aspect of doing what is required for the team. I wanted each player to be eager to sacrifice personal interest for the good of the group…Team spirit is nearness to sacrifice personal interests or glory for the welfare of all.13:50 - ConfidenceYou have to earn the right to be confident16:50 - Strongest four-letter word“Love is patient; love is kind. It is not jealous; it is not pompous; it is not inflated; it is not rude; it does not seek its own interest; it is not quick tempered; it does not brood over injury; it does not rejoice over wrongdoing but rejoices with truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, and endures all things.”18:15 - Don't give 110% Give me 100 percent. You can't make up for poor effort today by giving 110 percent tomorrow. You don't have 110 percent. You only have 100 percent, and that's what I want from you right now.20:10 - How to WinIf you want to extend a winning streak – forget about it. If you want to break a losing streak – forget about it. Forget about everything except concentrating on hard work and intelligent planning…The best way to achieve dreams is to ignore them21:30 - Assume AdversityAll leaders and organizations are blind-seided by bad luck and misfortune in varius ways at various times. The best leaders understand this and are seldom thrown off stride when it occurs. They recognize the opportunity it presents, namely, that your response can separate you and your organization front he competition whose leader is stunned and then disheartened when fate frowns. Expect the rough patches and allow them to make you stronger 25:45 - One Final NoteA good leader never stops le

Download Proverbs 13-16 We are in the Wisdom Stream reading from the Easy-to-Read Version. 7streamsmethod.com | @7StreamsMethod | @serenatravis | #7Streams | Donate Commentary by Dr. Drake Travis Lord Jesus, give us wisdom to learn what is right and to pursue it. And teach us wisdom to apply what we know. We want lives that bring you honor and glory. Amen. Here are highlights of today's four chapters in Proverbs: 13 - it is wise to receive instruction and advice, speak wisely, be diligent, truthful, and honest. Work hard for your money and then be careful not to 'flash it' around. Be a listener and be honored. Just a parallel comment here: Think about what happens when we marinate something in a sauce...it soon looks, smells, tastes like and actually becomes of the sauce it is marinated in. Likewise, fellowship and lingering with fools turns a man into a fool. End of discussion. Sinning and trouble accompany one another. Children are not goats to simply turn free to roam the hillsides and to figure out life on their own. Train them and disciple them to wisely live right. That is why God gave them to us. Be good hearted, make good decisions, and have plenty. 14 - A woman's care of her own home is quite an indicator of her soul. The wise and the fool are marked by their level of honor for God and their usage of words. Wisdom gives understanding; by it we learn obedience, peace, patience, knowledge, righteousness, victory. By wisdom we gain bounty, reverence the truth, attain more life, and remain healthy. By wisdom, nation's grow and are strengthened. Behaving intelligently avoids shameful treatment. 15 - Gentleness calms anger. Speak kindly. Goodness brings riches. Listen to the wise and live right. Be open to correction. Respect for the Lord is better than anything, and can take us to anywhere. Love always makes any meal better - and vice versa (in a big way!). Laziness makes for a difficult life. Industriousness makes for a fulfilling life. Speak in a well timed and proper way. The Lord is our best security. Do not do evil - especially not for pay. The Lord listens to the righteous = the opposite is also true for the unrighteous. Humility leads to honor. 16 - The Lord has for us--> the words, the right reasons, the right judgment, the right plans, the right advice. It is the Lord who protects us. Please the Lord and there is peace. Righteousness is better than riches. Good kings want honesty, fairness, and truth. Proud hearts make us against the Lord and destroy us. Speak accurately, carefully, sensibly, thoughtfully, and kindly. Get advice and don't do what only seems right to you - for it may be fatal. Troublemaking, strife, cruelty, trickery, painful treatment of others --> avoid it all. Live right, understand your own heart, do not succumb to anger and you are better off than a ruler. Know that the Lord guides.
Society seems to be breeding this overly independent approach and view on things, we are becoming our own islands. I think we all know this is not sustainable or long before we realize how much we need each other. Time to step up and build an industrious character and recognize the helpless nature of victims is not going to allow our businesses to feel connected and prosper. Today is the second episode in the series on John Wooden's Pyramid of Success that I started a couple of weeks ago. Today we begin talking about the first cornerstone in the building blocks of the pyramid - "Industriousness." You will hear three different quotes in this episode, all three dealing with the concept of industriousness, hard work, and preparation.
This week, we dig deep on a guy who always seemed to be almost great, but could never quite get over the hump. One area where he was an all star, however, was getting arrested. He's a repeat offender, but also branches out into other crimes, and ways to get arrested. He was nasty with the crossover, but even nastier at 2am, with flashing lights, in the rear view! Always be considered not quite an all star, go from team to team, as you get arrested, and always make sure everyone knows that you will not be kept out of handcuffs, no matter what with Rod Strickland!! Industriousness is a virtue. As a virtue, a moral habit, it is something whereby man becomes good as man. Thus, work is good for man and a good man is good for work.

All people are mortal creations whose span of life is only known to God (Ps. 139:16). God designed living to involve using your time to be industrious rather than wasting it being lazy or a sluggard (Heb. ‛âtsêl, ‘to lean idly, be slack’; Prov. 6:6-11). Laziness is the state of underachieving with God-given physical and mental resources. Laziness isn’t the same as ‘rest’. Rest is the reward of effort; laziness is the absence of effort. Gambling, video games, and hobbies (social media, home-brewing, sports, fishing, etc.) are examples of false ‘effort-satisfaction’ events. Feelings produced by entertainment shouldn’t be confused for satisfaction produced by industry (Prov. 21:17). Industriousness seeks to be useful to God, but laziness finds a way to be useless to anyone. Laziness is not passive restfulness, but active selfishness(Prov. 12:11; Matt. 25:26, 27).
More on Industriousness, including discipline, prioritizing and using resources wisely. Solomon gives sound economic advice, help for parents and children, and for kings and rulers. Today's Scripture: Proverbs 18:9;19:15;21:17,25,26;20:4,13;24:27,30-34;26:14;22:29;27:18,23-27;28:19;21:20;6:1-5;11:15;17:1820:1;22:26;1L8-9l10L1l11L29l15L20l17L2,6,21,28;19:26;20:20;23:22,23,24,2528:2416:3120:2911:22;12:4;14:1;18:22;19:13,14;21:9,19;27:15-16;14:28,35;16:10,12,13,14,15;17:7,11;19:12;20:26,28;21:1;22:11;23:1-3;24:21-22;25:2-7;28:2,3;29:12,14
This is the first eisode in a series I am doing over John Wooden's Pyramid of Success. John Wooden is considered one of the most successful coaches ever with a winning percentage over 80% in 40 seasons of coaching and 10 total NCAA national titles in basketball (of which 7 were consecutive). Woden created this pyramid to give us his insight into what he believed were some of the principles (which he calls blocks and mortar) that lead to success. “Perfectionism is often considered a negative thing, when it is really a positive” - Tai Lopez (click to tweet) When it comes to success, only a multifaceted approach works. The University of Pennsylvania found that the number one trait that contributes to success is conscientiousness. There are 5 facets of conscientiousness: Industriousness, perfectionism, organization, diligence, and prudence. Each of these facets plays a role, and today’s episode is about how each contributes, and how you can build your strength in each area. But it’s important to understand that a combination of many different factors are going to lead to your ultimate ability to succeed in this life. Don’t get too fixated on any one, but take a careful and holistic approach to learning and improving yourself. Focus on the 5 aspects of conscientiousness to improve your ability to succeed in life. “Organization is essential to productivity and progress in your life” - Tai Lopez (click to tweet) Points to Keep In Mind The #1 trait associated with success is conscientiousness If you don’t have attention to detail, you will have a hard time being successful The 5 facets of conscientiousness: Industriousness, perfectionism, organizations, diligence, and prudence Perfectionism is often considered a negative thing, when it is really a positive If you can’t pay attention to detail, you’ll probably be broke Organization is essential to productivity and progress in your life Diligence is the ability to stick something out when it’s not fun or exciting anymore Prudence is the ability to make good decisions in life. How do you define it? Henry and Martin get DEEP into the subject of SUCCESS. What is it really? And, crazier still, how do YOU define it!? Don't think it's important? This about this: It's a given that 100% of people want to become a “success”. Yet, the large majority of people haven’t even taken the time to define what success means. Do you have your own definition of success? Have you refined it and studied it? Remember, it's very difficult to hit a target that you can’t see! SEE John Wooden "The Wizard of Westwood" and his success pyramid. FREE DOWNLOAD Other definitions of success are explored: Earl Nightingale's "Success is the progressive realization of a worthy ideal." And, Thoreau's "If one advances confidently in the direction of their dreams and endeavors to live the life they imagine, they will meet with a success in common hours." It took Coach Wooden many years to find his correct formula. In 1934 he decided on the cornerstones, Industriousness and Enthusiasm, the two most important building blocks of the pyramid. Completing the foundation of the Pyramid are Friendship, Loyalty and Cooperation. As the years went by, Coach Wooden built his Pyramid upon 14 building blocks of essential virtues (habits), leading to the apex, the final, 15th building block - Competitive Greatness. On both sides of the Pyramid, in essence holding it together, are 10 words, including Ambition, Honesty and Integrity, once again all leading to the top, where Faith and Patience watch over Competitive Greatness. Coach Wooden completed his 'Pyramid of Success' in the spring of 1948, and the original Pyramid drawing was on his office wall after he accepted the men's basketball head coaching position at UCLA that same spring. Some classic Wooden quotes: "The best way to improve the team is to improve ourself." "Goals achieved with little effort are seldom worthwhile or lasting." "As long as you try your best, you are never a failure. That is, unless you blame others." "Much can be accomplished by teamwork when no one is concerned about who gets the credit."
