In this episode we explore grief through the philosophy of Stoicism. We see that the Stoics particularly the thinking of Seneca can be considered a bit insensitive when it comes to the topic of grief. We then look at the waking tradition of old Ireland and specifically the practise of keening - a highly articulated custom of women's oral poetry used to lament the deceased. Drawing on the philosophy of Joel Krueger we see that keening “scaffolded” the emotional consciousness of the community and thus brought all participants through the grieving process. Finally, Sheila shares her own experience of grief and claims that now more than ever we need to find innovative ways of facilitating the grieving process. Kevin Toolis is a BAFTA winning film maker and writer of the acclaimed death guide My Father’s Wake: How the Irish Teach Us to Live, Love and Die.   Nothing marks the end of an era more potently than when the icons of that era pass away. The cold reality is that when horror icons pass away, they rarely get memorialized in mainstream arenas. So, I wanted to give an "Irish Wake", a happy send-off for several of the people who passed away over the last few years. The people who gave horror fans their First Kiss. Kevin Toolis is a BAFTA winning film maker and writer of the acclaimed death guide My Father’s Wake: How the Irish Teach Us to Live, Love and Die. Toolis has reported on famines, wars and plagues all over the world for The New York Times and The Guardian. As a documentary maker he has filmed in the middle east and directed the Emmy-nominated Cult of the Suicide Bomber television history series.
