All drummers have a signature style and sound - but can you identify them by only hearing them? Today on The Drum Department we're going to test our ears and our familiarity with our favorite drummers by stripping down some of their most popular tracks to just their sound on the drums. We'll learn what makes a drummer's sound and style so unique.
Liberty DeVitto was Billy Joel's drummer for over 20 years. Liberty provided the backbeat that a generation grew up listening to both in the studio and live. We've asked Alex Cohen, Ramon Montager, and Jared Falk to record their version of Billy Joel's "Allentown", a song that has that classic feel, so we could see Liberty react in real time to these different versions of his parts in this episode of The Drum Department - who played it best?

Dom Famularo was the world's drumbassador- no matter what style or era drummer you were, Dom wanted you to feel connected to the history of drumming. Drummers love their snare drums. Some drummers will even set up two or three snares on their kit to have all kinds of different sonic options. We've always wondered, what would it be like if we turned a whole drum-set into snare drums? For today's episode, we actually modified an entire drum-set into snare drums! Check out what this crazy kit sounds like and how we did it!
The Drum Department's first call-in show! Check out the burning questions the drumming community has for us, and learn about what the future holds for Drumeo and the cool projects we are working on.
Todd Suchermann- Percussion Discussion - Episode 121 Im thrilled to be joined for todays Percussion Discussion by the one and only Todd Sucherman! Todd is best known for playing drums for legendary American rockers Styx since 1995. Join Todd and myself for a thrilling conversation covering many areas of Todds remarkably busy life and career. We talk about the many drums in his stunning room and how he goes about choosing the right job for the right song. We also discuss Todd's approach to putting drums down remotely after getting a track with programmed drums or a guide track. I had to ask Todd about his stunning version of the Foo Fighters Rope on Drumeo after one listen, Todd lets us into a little secret that he didnt want to do it and it took Jared Falk to offer Todd a beautiful (and rare) Jade Green Yamaha Recording Custom snare drum to twist his arm in to doing it!! This was a real pleasure to do, Todd is a wonderful guy and i thank him for giving up the time from his crazy busy schedule to talk to me! huge thanks must go to our mutual pal Peter 'Dougal' Butler for putting us in touch!
Drummers all have their own style, which can really change the way a song sounds and feels. Today on The Drum Department, Dave challenges Kyle, Jared and Tyson to play the same song. They will hear it once and play it, and they won't get to hear what each other played. Let's see who comes up with the best part!
In the '60s and '70s, single-headed toms reigned supreme with their short attack and melodic sound. In the '80s they died a very quick death, replaced by their predecessor: the double-headed tom. Though we've largely stayed doubled-headed, many drummers of today are adding concert toms back into their setups. Today we compare these two types of toms and see what we think is the best tom sound!
Peart; Bonham; Rich; Barker; Smith - all superstar drummers, but who inspired them? Who are the lesser known but very important drummers that we don't talk about every day who inspired our legends? In today's episode of The Drum Department we talk about some of the most overlooked but important drummers in history.
A.I. is very real and can be a valuable learning tool, but can it teach the drums? This week on The Drum Department we challenge A.I. technology to see if it can teach the drums better than the founder of Drumeo, Jared Falk.
Jared Falk is well-known not only for being a talented musician but also for creating Drumeo, one of the most popular platforms for aspiring drummers to turn to for accessible online lessons and inspiration from many amazing drummers that Jared works with. Jared is now the chairman and founder of Musora Media, which is the evolution of Drumeo's lesson model and now includes piano, guitar and singing lessons. In this episode, hear how Jared's entrepreneurial spirit has helped him grow and evolve as a musician and a business owner in one of the most exciting times in the musical education industry.
Metronomes are a crucial piece of gear for a drummer. They help us keep good time, and align us with other musicians and musical elements, but they are often very uninspiring to play to. Piercing sounds that have no feel or flow that can become a distraction instead of an aid. Today on The Drum Department, we'll get into what we hate about metronomes, but we'll also share our favorites, and help you find the best metronome for you!
The Paradiddle is often considered the most valuable rudiment for drum-set playing, equally useful in grooves and fills. How far can we push drumming legend Thomas Lang to create new ways to use this rudiment?
Jared Falk is the founder of Drumeo which has grown to be one of the top platforms for online education in the world. Drumeo is not only a great source of online education on drumeo.com, but the brand is also a giant across social media and YouTube as with millions of subscribers and followers. Drumeo has changed the way online lessons are presented and is responsible for creating countless new drummers which helps our entire industry grow. Jared and I discuss his early beginnings with filming lessons on his families farm, utilizing the internet to sell lessons on eBay, and then taking full advantage of YouTube to explode onto the scene and become the Drumeo we know today. Jared is now the Founder and Chairman of Musora Inc. which is the parent company to Drumeo, Guitario, Pianote, and Singeo. My guest today is Stan Bicknell. Stan is a NZ born drummer who for the past 13 years has based himself out of Melbourne Australia. In this time he has toured and recorded with many artists locally and internationally including 48May, Miami Horror, Tonight Alive, Ecca Vandal, and Kimbra. During his time with Kimbra, Stan played on her acclaimed debut album ‘Vows'. His Motown grooves can be heard on the track ‘Cameo Lover' which won both an Aria and APRA award, as well as playing on her now iconic ‘Sing Sing' sessions on YouTube, clocking up millions of views. Stan has a strong online presence, which in 2018 was noticed by Jared Falk, the owner and creator of Canadian based drum education platform ‘Drumeo'. Jared invited Stan on to Drumeo where he spent two days performing and recording songs and courses based on his ability behind the kit, and his unique single kick technique that has since taken the drumming community by storm. Stan is a frequent performer at drum festivals as well as where he likes to share his unique approach to the drums, and his strong mindset that goes with it. Now based back in Papamoa NZ, Stan is excited to be back home. Already he's been called in as backup for NZ drum and bass juggernauts, Shapeshifter, as well as kicking off a couple of new projects himself. Stan's a coffee nut, an incredibly gifted musician and just a bloody nice guy. So here he is, Ladies and gentleman. Its Mr Stan Bicknell. This conversation was recorded 10/02/2021. Intro song: "Hey Zeus" by Stan Bicknell and Josh De La Victoria. “I think there’s more drum sets and pianos collecting dust than are being sold each year.” Jared Falk is the CEO and co-founder of Drumeo. Jared was a private drum instructor earlier in his life but eventually he began to integrate his drum lessons with media after a student of his, Rick Kettner posted a heel-toe instructional video on a Pearldrummers forum. It was the response of this video that got Jared’s gears turning. Unfortunately, Rick had to take down the post because of the incredibly high cost for bandwidth due to the excessive number of people downloading the video. In response to the video’s success, Jared proposed to Rick that they should create a video which would become, “One-Handed Drum Roll” which was filmed in Jared’s shed at the time. This video was produced in 2005. Fast-forward fifteen-years later and we have Drumeo what it is today. Jared often says that if he didn’t go in the direction he did with Drumeo, he would have likely worked on his parents’ duck farm “Fraser Valley Duck & Goose”. While working for his parents’ farm Jared would drive to Chinatown, Vancouver selling ducks to different barbeque shops. His goal was to drive there with a full load of product and return home empty. Repeating that process over and over must have been instrumental in teaching Jared the skills of communication and business. So, when you combine strong business acumen and a love for drumming you end up with a businessman whose business is selling drumming. Recently, Jared has been standing up strongly towards some of the issues he sees within the industry. Partly out of self-preservation he has chosen to find ways to not just create more drummers but also to keep active drummers engaged with their instrument. Drumeo is constantly innovating within the tech space to create enticing methods of gauging a drummer’s growth with their educational materials, inspire the community and support those who need to regain their passion for drumming. Jared endorses Paiste and Evans. You Will Hear About…. The story of how Drumeo got off the ground. What is the Drumeo Method is. Jared’s thoughts on making your strengths stronger as a drummer. The stagnation that exists in the drum industry. How Jared balances his personal life amongst Drumeo. Some reasons why we think drumming is great for youth. The process of creating the Drumeo Festival. Why Should You Listen? Jared is a very unique individual within the industry. He has knowledge and perspectives that are specialized because of what he does. This insight can only really come from a handful of people in the drum industry and perhaps even less within the tech/media space. Jared loves data and studying the market and uses that data to make better decisions within Drumeo. In this interview you will hear about his thoughts on the current state of the industry, how he and Drumeo are making efforts to keep drummers drumming and how he balances this all within his personal life. “From that point on there was reason behind every note I played.” - Brandon reflecting on his first drum lesson with Jared Falk. Brandon Toews is the product director at Drumeo, author of two drumming books (The Best Beginner Drum Book and The Drummer’s Toolbox), drummer, and educator. At 22, he has managed to achieve quite an impressive resume within the industry. Recently Brandon has also become an endorsed artist with Evans Drumheads, Istanbul Agop Cymbals and Vic Firth Drumsticks. In this interview we explore playing with intention, balancing heavy work loads, and a first lesson with Jared that always stuck with Brandon. You Will Hear About…. A brief conversation about drum kit setups. A quick overview of Brandon’s career going back six years to the present. A valuable lesson learned during Brandon’s first drum lesson with Jared. Whether or not drummers are disciplined enough to stick with focused practice. Our thoughts about gigs that excite us vs the ones that don’t as much but still need to exist for us to pay our bills. How Brandon managed to write two drum books in a year and a half while attending school. Why Should You Listen? There is general drum nerdery in this episode that will be fun for listeners but our conversation also explores some topics that hold a great deal of relevance for all drummers. For any drummers who solely earn their livelihood through drumming may get a kick out of our conversation about the gigs that we may sometimes feel take up too much of our gigging schedule. Imagine this; The audience is eating dinner, having conversations and your job is to provide a gentle and appropriate ambience for their dinner. The sound guy says, “you are too loud. Please play quieter”. This kind of remark can easily diminish the fun factor of what we might be fantasizing about. And that fantasy might be going all out with no volume or creative restrictions in sight with a totally engaged audience and whistling and some positive outbursts. We all love that scenario don’t we? We also talk about the importance of playing with intention. Really considering the notes and grooves that we choose to provide something appropriate and tasteful to a band setting. It is easy to get caught up with the flashy “drummy” stuff and while there is a time and place for that, we need to keep that to a minimum when we know it doesn’t belong. These points mentioned are definitely the big takeaways from this episode and it is interesting to hear Brandon’s perspective on this. Today's conversation is with Stan Bicknell. The duo caught up at Rumble Coffee Roasters to talk life balance, dickheads online, worship at the altar of Brody Simpson and Andrew Gander, Drumeo and more!
Stan Bicknell. A lot of you know Stan, he came up in conversation a shit load of times in the different interviews for the 100th episode. His original show has been downloaded nearly 5000 times since it aired and continues to get about 50 new listens each month. It is just insane to me how much influence Stan gained on Instagram. It is one of those rare little gem cases where influence actually happened within a social platform. This explosion online caught the attention of Jared Falk and that resulted in an invite to Drumeo. Holy fuck, right!? One minute Stan is buying fish and chips with his family and the next he's being invited to fucking Drumeo!! Well, the last time we spoke over Skype, he was going and then at some point he wasn't gonna go. He started to really feel the effects of some blowback regarding his foot technique, which was a major factor to Stan attending Drumeo, so you might imagine he felt a tad deflated. Well, one day Stan came to his senses during a run and said to himself, "Why in the fuck did I sleep on the Drumeo gig?" and the next thing you know Stan is getting in touch with Jared to accept the offer provided if it was still available. It has been an exciting time for Stan since our last chat and it was great to catch up and see what he had to say for the 99th episode! POI in this episode - After our catchup small chat, Stan begins explaining Drumeo in vivid detail. For any drummer appearing on Drumeo to film lessons is a considerable honor. To think that the Internet largely had nearly everything to do with Stan being noticed and being asked to film content for Drumeo is kind of mind boggling isn't it? Stan thinks so too. He understands parts of why he thinks he got so much attention online, but he doesn't understand why it went to the degree of popularity that it did. But in any case, once the commitment was made Stan didn't waste any time when it came to practice. He went above and beyond to ensure that no stone was left unturned. - There was a point in the sixteen months since our last proper chat that Stan had to deal with some serious imposter syndrome issues. He was challenged about his foot technique and essentially being told that he will be injuring people, this person's students all wanted to learn Stan's technique which also pissed this person off. They even talked about it over Skype but it remained a difference of opinion. But how can Stan teach something if he himself is being affected by another person's strong opinion on his technique and claiming that it isn't good? It messed Stan up a bit and he shares that with us. - So your ego can be crushed pretty quickly sometimes if we are vulnerable to particular feedback. But I had to ask Stan that even though this wasn't a positive experience, does the positive stuff affect him too but in a different way? It was kind of a neat perspective to see if false confidence is in anyway involved with Stan and how he takes in the compliments. Also, does he ever numb out to the positive messages that he receives? - So we talked about how he felt before and during the Drumeo experience, but he did he feel after? What comes next? Jared Falk from Musora and Drumeo joins Callie on the last episode of Season 2 of Behind the Membership. Jared has not one, but four membership sites, all in different music niches. And with over 10,000 active members in his original membership site, Drumeo, and having served over 200,000 customers so far in his business, he’s achieved a lot by anyone's standards. In this episode Jared is discussing world domination when it comes to membership sites, including how he is replicating his successful drum membership site into other markets, and how he’s grown his business to a team of 35, with most working on location in his offices in Canada. And he reveals why he's always trying new things when it comes to marketing and retention and how what works for one site doesn’t necessarily work for another, even in similar niche, and how he’s able to release an hour of new content every single day, without overwhelming himself of his members.
Taking online lessons for anything requires a lot of self-discipline, especially since your online instructor can’t necessarily hold you accountable like an in-person instructor can. But what if the platform allowed you to interact with your celebrity-level teachers and your fellow students in order to help keep you on track and provide encouragement? Musora is the parent company of online education platforms Drumeo, Guitareo, Pianote, and Recordeo, but its story begins with the birth of Drumeo. In 2002, Jared Falk was a (patient) drum instructor, yet found it frustrating to try and teach the same thing over and over again to each new student he brought on. One of his students at the time was a bit of a tech guy, so they decided to try shooting a video at home to help educate drum students online. The incredible success of their first video (roughly 12,000 downloads in a time before easy video platforms existed and dial-up internet was still more popular than high-speed) proved to them that there was potentially a large market for online music instruction. Over the years, Drumeo became a powerhouse platform for new and veteran drummers alike, allowing students to either learn new chops or brush up on their skills. As time went on, instructional videos started to feature more and more top players in the industry, allowing students to learn first hand from their favorite drummers. This success was later repeated with the launch of Guitareo for guitar players, Pianote for piano players, and now Recordeo, a newly launched platform for the home recording engineer that made its debut in late spring 2018. Jared Falk, President of Musora, joins us in this episode to share the story behind how his Netflix of online music education started as a simple video shoot in a barn, their mission to bring affordable musical instrument and technical education to the world, and what it’s like to work with some of the industry’s top names and biggest A-players to bring quality material to their students. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/behindthebackline/support

If you have internet and social media, you know who Anika Nilles is. An artist who started professionally late in life and yet in a small time frame has captured a wide audience all across the globe with her high level production quality drum videos, original compositions, tireless work ethic and touring. It was an absolute pleasure and honour to feature her on this podcast and the results of our conversation are terrific. Some of the particulars about her that I find fascinating is how widely recognized she is in this industry. She, along with a handful of others, discovered the power of social media and producing high quality content distributed through YouTube before it became a saturated platform and I believe this is a major contributing factor to her success. I certainly don’t want to discount her amazing abilities, attention to detail and innovation, but had she started last week I cannot assume she would have had the same level of fortune in her career. It is this topic that I find most compelling about her. We discuss this at length as well as her transition from a regular working life to full time professional drummer. The incredible advice and council that she received when she was 21 years old from the renowned drummer Benny Greb. It all comes together to shape this incredible journey she has had and to hear it first hand is great listening. Some other points that we talk about are whether she finds it hard to keep her performance levels high when she is travelling so often in different countries. I recall a time when I saw her on Drumeo and she had talked about having jet lag and she seemed very tired. You have to wonder, how do you keep your performances at a high level when you are experiencing so much exhaustion? Another subject is how she feels about her fanfare. What is it like to be recognized and admired across the globe? Anika, for the record, is a genuinely humble person who is incredibly friendly. She was one of the nicest people I have ever had on the show and she was gracious towards the invitation to be on the podcast in the first place. She talks about how she views the fans who appreciate her and that she feels so appreciated that she can only give that back to her fans. Her attitude towards life seems to be consisting of hard work, appreciation for herself and others and to focus on what brings joy and value to her life. We also had some great questions come in from fans. Here is what the fans wanted to say…. - Jamie from Greenfield drums: What was your dad’s background as a drummer and how was he an influence to you early on? - @Ethangarofalo: Why do you utilize quintuplets so often in your music? - @Travisonthedrums: What is your song writing process? - @Man_francisco - Is it possible for music to be technical and still have as much heart as a Motown classic like “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough?” - Mike at Predator Percussion - What was your inspiration in creating your own album and do you write the parts for the other instruments? - @Davidszieber - This fan was actually at your Expo in Hungary and he wants to know how you tune your drums. - Jared Falk wanted me to ask Anika about her ping pong skills. (The response to this is priceless!) All in all, this interview was a dream of mine when I started the podcast and I am a huge fan. I feel this interview holds a great story and advice within and I hope listeners feel like they got to know her as a little bit better because of it. Enjoy DrumFam!!! But every once in a while I have a guest that completely blows my mind with their incredible wisdom, experiences and advice. Jared Falk is a guest that fits this description to a T. Because of the unique opportunity to speak with someone that holds so much experience on this kind of scale, I had to take advantage of this and create a unique and deep podcast episode. This episode will resonate with people who are building their own brand online and the conversation we have about this topic is incredibly realistic. I personally hope that people will reflect on their personal efforts and feel encouraged that the ebbs and flows are just part of the process. In this podcast we take it from the ground up with how Jared and Rick Kettner got this project up and running. The level of risk that was assumed in creating Drumeo, which is a name that was chosen much later, is kind of insane. Borrowing money from his brother and maxing out his credit cards, Jared is an all or nothing kind of guy. He was either going to succeed or crash and burn. Most people do one of two things, play it safe or they put themselves at great risk for great rewards. To hear where Drumeo started and where it is now is nothing short of incredible. I absolutely found it necessary to discuss his thoughts with online education. Not to set him up in anyway, but Drumeo is widely regarded as the most successful brand in this segment of the industry and I had to ask his opinion on this subject. What he says is both positive and negative in a sense but all his feedback is very objective. In this episode Jared and I have a lot of laughs, deep conversation and overall amazing rapport. For someone who’s time is limited and brand is so large, he remains approachable and truly humble about himself. As a quick little side note, I want to say that Jared is standing proof that with enough willpower, patience and strategy, you can do great things. I am going to refrain from really going into any great detail about this episode in the notes. It is a strong episode that will open your mind and make you feel empowered to encounter your own dreams.
