On September 28, 2023, the drumming world lost a hero. Highly regarded as drumming's Global Ambassador,  Dom Famularo was a beacon of light in the music industry. Based out of Long Island, NY, Dom was a drummer, world renowned educator, motivational speaker, mentor and a friend. His passion and enthusiasm was infectious and everyone who was ever blessed to be in his presence was uplifted and inspired by him. Facing a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer over the last couple of years, Dom fought valiantly to overcome this disease just as he faced and overcame  so many obstacles throughout his life.  Even when things were really tough at times, he faced this challenge with a sense of grace. He devoted his attention to empower and encourage thousands who continued to reach out when they needed his guidance and support. I have gathered stories from many throughout the industry who's lives were impacted by Dom. This tribute is a celebration of his legacy and to show the world just how he impacted our lives through his kindness and support. It is through their stories that I want to tell how much he affected all of us. Now, sit back and take some time to listen to only a few of the countless stories of some of the lives he impacted. Let's allow Dom's legacy to empower us to face and overcome our own obstacles, live our lives with passion, commit to always aspire to greatness, encourage each other, and always be kind.  As Dom would always say… Onward and Upward! https://www.domfamularo.com

Big Fat Five: A Podcast Financially Supported by Big Fat Snare Drum

This past week, we lost a very important member of the drumming community, Dom Famularo. Known as "Drumming's Global Ambassador" spent the last 30 years traveling the globe preaching the gospel of drumming. An intense performer, Dom remains one of the most respected solo drum artists in the world, with a career built solely upon his unique skills as a drummer, educator, author and motivational speaker. Dom was a guest on this show in 2021 and it was, of course, a great chat chalk-full of life lessons. It was back before I asked the guests to pick 5 records that shaped them into the players they are today…instead I provided prompts (which I read aloud) and they answered them accordingly. Dom answers went far beyond drumming…of course

His sensational drumming and brilliant communications skills have earned Dom Famularo a reputation of being the world's leading motivational drum set artist / educator. Through history-making tours of China and the Far East, and with standing ovations to capacity audiences at virtually every major drumming event in Europe and the Americas, this vibrant performer from Long Island, New York is renowned for delivering entertaining and awe-inspiring performances unlike any other.Tutored by legendary greats Joe Morello, Jim Chapin, Al Miller, Charlie Perry, Colin Bailey, Shelly Manne, Papa Jo Jones and Ronnie Benedict, Dom combines the masterful techniques of the past with the parameter-pushing concepts of today's music for a highly creative and uniquely personal style of drumming. With hands powered by the famous Moeller technique and feet dancing through high-speed double-pedal bass drumming patterns he delivers performances that dip and dive through dynamics and styles with energy and ease. The first Western drummer to perform clinics in China, Dom is accustomed to making headlines. He was a special guest performer at the first-ever Buddy Rich Tribute Concert, an event which he helped organize. He was a highlight as host and performer at the Pacific Rim Drum Invitational (the first drum event to be simulcast live on the Internet), and he's a primary attraction at star-studded drumming events such as the LaRioja Drumming Festival, Koblenz International Drummer Meeting in Germany, the Florida Drum Expo, the Paris Music Show, the massive Ultimate Drummers Day in Australia, the Heartbeat World Rhythm spectacle for Canadian TV, and the Montreal Drumfest.Dom doesn't rely on major band affiliations as a claim to fame, but performances with the Buddy Rich Big Band, B.B. King, Lionel Hampton, Chuck Leavell (Rolling Stones), T Lavitz (The Dixie Dregs), and the Louie Bellson Big Band reveal the pedigree of his playing. He has shared the stage with Dave Weckl, Steve Gadd, Vinnie Colaiuta, Simon Phillips, Billy Cobham, Bernard Purdie, Rod Morgenstein, Chester Thompon, Terry Bozzio, Will Calhoun, Deen Castronovo, Russ McKinnon, Chad Smith, Mark Schulman, Denny Carmassi, Liberty DeVitto and Jim Chapin in worldwide drumming events. In addition to large drumming expos and clinic tours, Dom is an active educator at colleges, drum schools and camps. He has performed at the Percussive Arts Society Convention (PASIC), Percussion Institute of Technology (PIT) in Hollywood California, Drummers Collective in NY, KOSA Camp in Vermont USA, North Texas State University, the Graham Cole Percussion Camp in England, and Drummers Camp in the Black Forest of Germany and many others. In addition, he is an in-demand consultant to major music corporations, and serves as Education consultant for Sabian Cymbals, Vater Drum Sticks, Mapex Drums, Remo Drumheads, SE Microphones, and Wizdom Media for whom he oversees programs worldwide.Michael Leasure has held the drum chair in Walter Trout's band since 2008.Mike Leasure was born in Alhambra, California in 1968. He is the youngest of six children. He found his life's calling at the ripe old age of six while sitting in his mother's kitchen. His mother was doing the dishes while listening to the radio. At one point a Benny Goodman tune came on and the young boy, captivated by the drumming of Gene Krupa, picked up some pots and pans and began flailing away in accompaniment."Leasure made his debut as drummer for The Edgar Winter Band in March 2005. "I was nervous and the sound check didn't go all that well. But once we all walked out on stage, everything just kind of fell into place." Leasure played 50 shows with Winter in 2005 & 2006. Michael has worked with Guitar Phenom Philip Sayce for the past six years and is currently touring the world this summer with Blues/Rock legend, Walter Trout.

Billy Cobham Discusses The Importance Of Teamwork Within Music

“Just lay it down. And if that happens, you work until you get sick of playing.”   Try Drumeo Edge for free for 7 days   Billy Cobham is a name that echoes throughout the history of drumming. Known for his power, finesse, dynamics, speed, musicality, metric modulation, and well just about every attribute that we drummers admire, it is impossible not to recognize the impact Billy had on music. Whether it was his work on several of Miles Davis’ records including Bitches Brew, Mahavishnu Orchestra’s early recordings, several Stanley Clarke records, Billy always brought a certain energy and sound that could be identified rather quickly. While he worked on many important early fusion recordings and beyond, he also led bands that produced important works, in particular the 1973 record Spectrum.   Billy has also been quite involved with drum education as well. In fact, he was performing educational drum clinics back in the early ’80s. He has also hosted drum retreats and masterclasses as well. Currently, he is hosting a masterclass series titled, “Billy Cobham’s Guide To Stress-Free Drumming” which consists of ten classes that are three hours in length. He is joined with his co-host Dom Famularo each month and there are two classes each where special guests Dennis Chambers, Will Calhoun, and Gary Husband offer their expertise.   Click here to sign up for Billy Cobham’s Guide To Stress Free Drumming   You Will Hear About….   Knowing what you are playing to maximize your sound. How to deploy rudiments musically. The problems with alpha dominant musicians and how to deal with them. Are musical choices like opinions? Making the band comfortable and creating great feeling music. Billy’s out-of-body experiences with Horace Silver and Mahavishnu Orchestra. Do artistic compromises create a long-lasting negative impact on musicians?   Why Should You Listen?   Billy and I really dove headfirst into a dialogue about how musicians can better serve a band. This isn’t about how we become better drummers through exercises and practice. This is about taking what you know and utilizing it tastefully to create great music. Forget the thrills of speed and complex patterns, while they have their place once we have a firm grasp on their musical qualities, just laying it down and making our bandmates comfortable is critically important if we want to become great musicians. This is a beneficial message to any musician.   Music Featured In Today’s Show   George Duke and Billy Cobham Band - Hip Pockets: 1:40 Billy Cobham - Red Baron: 8:40 & 9:52 Billy Cobham - Life & Times: 18:15 Billy Cobham - Stratus (Intro): 18:42 Billy Cobham’s Glass Managerie: AC DC 24:27 Billy Cobham - Stratus: 29:54 Billy Cobham - Le Lis: 43:15     Billy’s Socials   Instagram Facebook Website   Follow ‘Drumeo Gab’   Instagram Facebook YouTube

“A lot of drumming fans are just that.” Chris Paprota is a multi-instrumentalist who experiments with making his own recordings, such as his latest project “Riff Tapes” which is due for release on October 1st of this year. He is also the drummer for the Philly based prog-fusion band “Gnarbot”. Click this link to a sample of their work from a performance at Meinl which was released as a four-song EP titled “Meinl Sessions, Vol 1” which is also available as a vinyl release.  Chris was scheduled to perform this year at the Meinl Festival in Germany but due to Covid it has been canceled for this year. Chris is hopeful that due to the fact that he was invited this year that he will be performing next year assuming that it is in fact happening next year. Chris is a drummer who I feel falls far below people’s radar and I have been asking myself why that is and what makes a drummer rise to fame or social media fame?  It is interesting to hear how he aligns with his own creativity and how people assume the worth of somebody based on their associations and achievements. This is just one aspect of this conversation.   You Will Hear About…. Improvisation and risk taking. Why we think some drummers are underrated. Social media and whether it hurts an artist. The difficulty in converting your drumming audience into a fan of your music. Obsession. Meinl festival cancellation and how that affected Chris. Chris’s time studying with Dom Famularo. Riding the ebbs and flow of motivation. A conversation about the spark within us. A listener question.   Why Should You Listen? This is really relatable to anyone who is working hard and their craft and has experienced a slow burn, maybe not being noticed or feeling like you have had some missed opportunities. These events and experiences can be a hard thing to deal with but Chris’s point of view with this is hopeful. It is encouraging to hear such a great musician have a tone of voice that indicates that he believes in himself and that by working hard at his drumming and making moves in the world will bring what he is looking for. The song in the intro of today’s podcast is a sample of Chris Paprota’s “Megazord” from his Riff Tapes record.   Chris’s Socials Instagram Facebook Website   Follow ‘Drumeo Gab’ Instagram Facebook YouTube

He has traveled all over the world to present his masterclasses and clinics and was also the first western drum educator to perform clinics in China. Dom has been one of the most sought after drum teachers for over forty years and to this day maintains a student list of 2500 students. He has also authored two books, “It’s Your Move” and “The Cycle of Self-Empowerment”. The list of accolades and achievements are immense with Dom and he shows zero signs of slowing down. Besides the educational side and the public speaking, Dom is an incredible drummer as well. His solos tend to have dramatic peaks and valleys dynamically. Dom really sucks you in with his storytelling. I always hear a stealthy army approaching the enemy quietly creeping in and then a battle ensues! An absolute brutal assault from pounding double-bass drums thundering beneath the flurry of cymbal crashes and tom rolls. It is unmistakable.  Dom’s enthusiasm for life and music is the kind of genuine inspiration that is great for people. In many ways, he is my personal role model and I feel very fortunate to know him and to have had some incredible moments with him. This interview with him was very fulfilling and many times over I felt my body tingle with his positivity and energy. I hope that everyone feels that when they listen to this.   You Will Hear About…. How Dom became the speaker he is today despite having a stutter when he was a child. Learning why it is important to focus on how you deliver a message. Dom’s 3 E’s. Whether Dom’s drum students show signs of improvement in other areas of their life due to drumming. Why do people squash their passions? Why is drumming a great option for people to take up? How would Dom help convince a drummer to stick with drumming? Whether Dom can tell true passion from temporary inspiration?   Why Should You Listen? This episode with Dom is vitamins. Despite the short length of this episode, there is so much jammed into it. It is an incredibly full episode with nothing to waste. He also performs with his funk/fusion band Flux. Claus does fly under the radar somewhat in the drum community but has carved out a long and prosperous career with education and performance.   Click HERE to learn more about Claus' book "Camp Duty Update"   What we talked about (in order)   - Claus talks about his rope tuned solid Ash wood drum in significant detail and gives me a small tour of his home studio.   - This interview was recorded January 3rd, 2019, so naturally, I wanted to know how Claus’ new year has been treating him so far.   - Claus and Dom Famularo go way back. Claus talks about how Dom played a big role in Claus’ development both in his playing but also with an opportunity within the industry.   - Claus is hugely interested in drum history. Swiss rudiments, medieval drums, techniques to name a few. I bring up the Tabor and the open-handed roll. Claus clears up some misinterpretation within this subject.   - We fall into a rabbit hole which, if I sum it up, is about intentions and purpose to drumming in music. We begin with the Tabor. A medieval drum that accompanied a fife and was played with one blunt stick. Then we end up talking about if and how different time periods affect a musician. This is highly speculative, but interesting subject matter.   - Camp Duty Update has been receiving some notoriety lately. With the 2018 Best Educational Material nomination from Modern Drummer, I had to ask what his mission was in writing that material.   - Claus has authored a great deal of educational material to the drumming world. He discusses with me how his students are his beta testers and allow Claus to see directly what needs to be included or not to develop a great piece of educational material.   - The mileage that you can get out of one rudiment opposed to memorizing fifty rudiments and barely scratching the surface, is a concept that Claus is very interested in. How to “hide” rudiments effectively in musical settings is what he believes more drummers ought to do. This part is like having a lesson with Claus.   - With educators, I sometimes sense that there is a lot of calculation in their approach to what they play and so it comes out sounding very “beige” and exercise-y sounding. That doesn’t apply to all educators obviously, and therein lies the question. How does a player, who teaches, maintain a sense of character and a distinct sound?   - Claus talks about his early career doubts and fears. He’s good now though. In all seriousness though, Claus gets into some great commentary about human nature and by sharing this stuff with other people is a sign of maturity and strength.   - “If you don’t sound like shit, you’re not practicing” This is a quote we all know and love, isn’t it? Of course, this statement is true, but does it lead a focus of persuading a student to focus on their weaknesses? Claus explains his point of view towards this.   - This conversation sparked a question that I didn’t anticipate asking, but I ask Claus what his thoughts are on pacing yourself on new material. I use an analogy where my fist represents my size of abilities. Then my other hand and fingers represent the new things that you want to add, that you will inevitably suck at. How much of the new stuff should you add, and how long does it take to fuse to the total sum of your abilities. This leads to perhaps the most interesting part of this episode.   Claus' Socials Instagram Facebook Website   Drumeo Gab's Socials Instagram Facebook   Drumeo's Socials Instagram Facebook YouTube Website   Click HERE to watch Claus' free Drumeo Lesson!   Jingle Credits Music Production/Mastering - Kingmobb Voice Over - Tom Knight Drums - Me Recording Engineer - Michael Marucci

This interview session with Dom Famularo is one that I hold in high regard. As many of you know, Dom is Drumming's Global Ambassador. Dom has earned that title because for so many years he has traveled the globe sharing his wisdom, educating drummers and using his communication skills to motivate and inspire drummers to reach their full potential.   So, with this interview I really wanted to capitalize on the unique qualities that Dom holds. Through him I wanted to provide a message to listeners and that message is to find your passion and persevere. None of us who embark on following our passions have any real idea where it can take us but we all have to believe in what we do and why we do it. We have to understand that regardless of how long the journey takes to reach a destination, that we appreciate and enjoy our journey. By believing in ourselves and the unique gift that we hold, we can all succeed in what we are passionate about. Through hard work and genuine love for what we do, opportunities will cross our path eventually.   However, the opportunities will not come to you unless you dedicate yourself to your passions and persevere. Many people check out when the success they are striving for doesn’t happen as quickly as they had hoped and that is really unfortunate. The truth is that you need to be consistent and go into it thinking that it will take a while and you have to be okay with that. We all possess the ability to influence and impact people with our creative passions but it can take a lot of time before anything becomes established and where you can feel like you are going somewhere.   If your dreams aren’t being realized right away, don’t give up on them. Keep pushing and keep believing. The reason for doing it in the first place shouldn’t be about the money, the public success or the influence you have. It should be about you honouring what you body and mind need in order to thrive. We all have this and it is a shame if it is discarded because you haven’t reached the destination right away or because you have talked yourself out of it before you ever began.   I hope you read this and reference it to the conversation that I had with Dom. What is incredible is that great moments are awaiting you if you discover the vehicle that will take you there. We have one chance in life to live and to make differences within our circle of friends, family, colleagues, acquaintances and even possibly a large group of people. The power of believing both in yourself and your passions and following that is incredibly important if we want to limit the amount of regret we may experience later in life once time has run out. I encourage everyone that if there is a burning desire somewhere deep inside you to pursue a dream, DO IT! Why wouldn’t you? Why would you prefer to walk through life admiring others and then telling yourself you can’t be admirable too? Or that you can’t do something because someone else’s success seems so untouchable.   It all takes time and dedication and if you really love it, you too can empower others and yourself by taking action in your life. Chances are that everyone who had succeeded also failed many times and had to rebuild or rethink their path. Challenge yourself, don’t settle on mediocrity, believe in yourself and understand that this could take years to become what you have always wanted to be.   I hope you all enjoy this podcast and even re-listen later on if you need a boost in your spirit. This podcast has that quality to it. I have now recorded 69 podcast episodes and while they all feature takeaways, knowledge and wisdom…this is the episode that stands among them as the most valuable episode to date. Dom’s ability to address his thoughts, using words that have impact and delivering everything with conviction, I believe you too will find the power in this episode. Maybe this interview is the thing you need to light the fire in your belly and take charge of your passions and persevere.   Much love to all.   Drumming performances are by Dom Famularo   Dom’s Socials   Instagram | Facebook | Website   DrumGAB Socials   Instagram | Facebook | Website
