In most years, more firefighters die by suicide than from accidents or injuries that happen in the line of duty, according to the Firefighter Behavioral Health Alliance. It's well understood that PTSD is a huge contributor to the problem, but recently a new concept called moral injury has also become recognized as a significant factor. Today on the podcast, we discuss moral injury and firefighter suicide with Jeff Dill, a licensed clinician and former battalion chief who is the founder the Firefighter Behavioral Health Alliance (3:15). We also talk about the many factors—good and bad—that play a role in the overall mental health of today's first responders. Then, on a new Code Corner, Curt Floyd, the technical lead for responders at NFPA, discusses the new consolidated standard NFPA 1030 and the new guidance it gives on professional qualifications for first responder inspectors (36:00). In today's episode I speak to Jeff Dill and Gemma Pfister, CEO and Executive at Vynamic, the multinational healthcare industry management consultants with offices in Philadelphia, Boston, Durham, North Carolina and London here in the UK. I've spoken to a number of guests who've expanded their businesses across the pond, but these have all been firms that have gone UK to US. As such, it was great to speak with Jeff and Gemma and find out how they've successfully managed to make the leap the other way and learn about the Vynamic journey that's led them from a single state operator to the multinational consultancy they are today. Jeff started his career, like several of my guests, at Accenture. He was persuaded to leave and join a former colleague in the early days of Vynamic and the rest, as they say, is history. During his time as CEO he's overseen a number of huge events for the business, including the expansion I've just mentioned, turning the business round following the financial crisis and the sale of Vynamic to UDG Healthcare plc in 2017. Gemma spent the earlier part of her career in the US and Germany, before coming to the UK to join a global healthcare company that was acquired by UDG. When UDG acquired Vynamic, Gemma was offered the chance to be part of founding and leading the UK business and leapt at the opportunity. With two guests on today's show, there was a lot to cover and Jeff and Gemma share so many great insights from their journey with Vynamic in today's interview. We cover a whole range of topics including: - The Vynamic story and what led Jeff and the team to expand beyond one office in the first place. - What it's like to take a business into an international market, and how to manage the many challenges that come with it. - And the importance of culture when growing a consulting business and how Vynamic achieves ‘shared values with a local vibe' across their various offices. This was a great conversation, with two guests who have so much to offer in the stories they tell and advice they give. If you're looking to take your consultancy in to a new market, or maybe you have and you're trying to get to grips with how you can bring those different offices together, I know you'll get a ton from this conversation. When the average person thinks about firefighters, paramedics and EMTS, the adjectives that often come to mind include, brave, caring, compassionate, putting others’ needs first, etc. The words they often do not think of include, depressed, anxious, upset, confused and more. Why? While most of us love our jobs and helping others when it is most needed, that “love” does not include the pain, trauma, tragedy and more, that we often see. My guest today is Jeff Dill, a former firefighter and founder of the FHBA (Firefighters’ Behavioral Health Alliance (www.ffbha.org). For nearly ten years, Jeff was the only one with a connection to the fire service, who has been keeping track and validating the suicides of our brothers and sisters in fire and EMS. Listen as Jeff and I discuss what he has seen and learned and stands read to share and teach others. Just like our international fight against cancer in the fire service, we have also had the Behavioral Health Initiative for several years now. The question is though, does YOUR department have a program? If yes, that’s great news! If no – where will you turn. Jeff shares some of those answers in this episode. Please…don’t just listen or watch this episode – do something about it, either for yourself or someone you care about. To all our members and followers of the Jewish faith, best wishes to you and yours for a Happy, Healthy and Peaceful New Year. Tune in on your favorite podcast platform or at http://Bit.ly/DalmatWeb

This week on Answering the Call - The First Responder Podcast, Jersey Ed & the Podfather Mike Mikes welcome Jeff Dill to the show. Jeff is the Founder, CEO, and instructor at the Firefighter Behavioral Health Alliance. A little about our guest today! “In 2009, founder Jeff Dill, organized Counseling Services for Fire Fighters. CSFF was established based on the tragic events that surrounded Hurricane Katrina. When speaking with firefighters who returned after serving the community of New Orleans, he heard the pleas of firefighters who had a difficult time talking with counselors who did not have any firefighting experience. They became frustrated and never did seek the help they needed. It was CSFF mission to offer behavioral health workshops to support firefighters, train senior officers and educate clinicians on the benefits of understanding the life and emotions of firefighters. On 12/31/14, CSFF donated all of their intellectual property to FBHA. In 2011, Firefighter Behavioral Health Alliance was organized based on the decreasing funds available for training at the Fire Department level and the staggering number of firefighter suicides. FBHA was established to directly educate firefighters/ Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel and their families about behavioral health issues such as depression, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), anxiety and addictions, as well as firefighter suicides. Through businesses, community support and sponsorships, it is our hope that the workshops and services will be offered at low cost or no charge to those in need. Jeff holds a Master’s degree and is a Licensed Counselor. He is a retired Captain from Palatine Rural Fire Protection District in Inverness, Illinois and is a member of the American Counseling Association and National Board of Certified Counselors. Jeff Dill, and those working with FBHA, are dedicated to educating firefighters and emergency service personnel on the importance of behavioral health and suicide awareness.” Podcast Pick of the Week: Rock Bottom 2 Recovery PodcastHosted by a Corrections Officer in Rock Bottom 2 Recovery is a podcast in support of open discussion and respectfully sharing of ideas and inspiration about all forms of recovery from addiction.  -- Genesis House and the Friends in Recovery Podcast are proud to bring you Answering the Call – The First Responder Podcast . No one said, “Life is easy.” And for those of us who are first responders, we get to see life at its very worst sometimes. It may be just one call, or it could be several really serious ones in a row. Fires, auto collisions, shootings, tragedies involving children and more; they often seem to pile up, one on another. Add to that mix how little sleep we often get, maybe problems at home with family, money, and yes, even health, and the result is a toxic soup from which we may see only one way out. According to the current statistics, the number of firefighter suicides in 2017 was equal to the number of LODD’s registered. And to that, the number of our EMS colleagues who took their lives and the numbers are almost staggering. My guest on this podcast, Jeff Dill, knows these numbers and well. Currently, Jeff and his organization, the Firefighter Behavioral Health Alliance (FFBHA.org) are the only ones who keep track of firefighter and EMS suicides. You will hear Jeff explain the process he follows and the organization’s efforts to not only assist those who are living with these dark shadows, but the families who are often left behind to cope with little understanding of what happened. This podcast is for every single listener out there, firefighter, EMS, law enforcement, buffs and civilians, too. YOU might be able to make a difference in someone’s life. To learn how and why, tune in, sit back and listen.

One of the most difficult topics this podcast has discussed. The suicide problem that is occurring within the EMS profession. This week's I talk with the founder of the Firefighter Behavioral Health Alliance (FBHA) Jeff Dill. FBHA is dedicated to educating EMS, Police and Fire on suicide awareness. It is the only known organization that collects and validates data on FF/EMT suicides across the Unites States. Jeff besides being a retired Fire Captain holds a MS in Counseling. Suicide of Public Safety Providers, especially in EMS unfortunately is in the news on a regular basis. Just this week EMS1.com ran another article on the subject. We discuss how the organization got its start. We talk about suicide in EMS, what are some of the signs we should be looking for and how important that we educate our public safety family.
