This episode is a little different. I'm going to talk about the importance of balance and health. This time I'm the example. I'm hitting the half century mark this year. After 3 years of COVID disrepair and neglect, I knew I needed a change. In this episode, I'm going to describe those changes and what it's done for me. I'll also be commenting on the significant gap between health, fitness and the wealth management industrial complex. In brief, I think the industry has a huge blind spot around the intersection of health and wealth and is dangerously ignorant about the widening time and expense divide between one's late career and death. To help me make sense of this is, noted expert, Phil Pearlman. DR. PHIL PEARLMAN, is the founder of THE PEARL INSTITUTE. He is an expert in the areas of personal health, human change processes, and systems integration. Phil and I didn't work together. However, I hope his unique perspective on balancing career, fitness, mental health and other facets help put my experience into context and give the audience some lessons from my journey. The Georgia House of Representatives has voted in favor of a bill proposing a new system for compensating wrongfully convicted individuals. The legislation, sponsored by Representative Scott Holcomb, would create a panel of experts in the criminal justice system to determine whether a wrongful conviction had occurred and if compensation was warranted. The Claims Advisory Board would then make recommendations to the chief justice of the Georgia Supreme Court for inclusion in the state budget. Awards under the new system would range from $50,000 to $100,000 for each year of wrongful incarceration, depending on the panel's decision. The House passed similar legislation last year, also sponsored by Holcomb, but it died in the Senate. This year's bill is pending before the Senate Appropriations Committee but has yet to get a hearing. Buford's boys and girls track and field teams swept the championships at Saturday's Gulf Shores Invitational in Gulf Shores, Alabama. With less than two weeks left in the Georgia General Assembly session, Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones is providing anxious lawmakers with a calming presence. Jones supports a $2,000 pay raise for state employees and a property tax rebate from Georgia's budget surplus. He also supports a sports betting measure and a school vouchers bill, though the latter is criticized by Democrats. Sports betting — after appearing to have died prior to the all-important “Crossover Day” deadline earlier this month– may have gained new life this week when it was tacked onto an unrelated bill about soap box derbies. Jones said he thought it was wise for the legislature to consider sports betting apart from other gambling measures. Jones contends that sports betting proceeds could help increase state revenues for the HOPE scholarship and help pay for expanded offerings such as scholarships for technical schools and early childhood learning. A strong road midweek starting performance has earned Georgia Gwinnett College sophomore right hander Ben Harris honors as the Continental Athletic Conference Baseball Pitcher of the Week. Harris won his second straight start by matching a career high with seven innings and 11 strikeouts in a key road win against Middle Georgia State University last Tuesday. The right hander did not allow an earned run in the outing. The Crystal Lake, Illinois, native scattered six hits and helped toss six consecutive scoreless frames starting in the second inning. He helped the Grizzlies rally from an early 3-2 deficit, with those runs being unearned, to grab the lead in the fifth inning. Harris has a 4-0 record this season after starting six games and completing 31.2 innings. He has thrown 48 strikeouts while allowing just 11 walks and eight earned runs.   Maria Moreno joins us to talk about the Nature of Color exhibit at Fernbank.      As we get closer to the start of the 2023 Masters, Times-Journal Incorporated sports editor John Bednarowski joins the show continue to take us on a tour of Augusta National presented by Ingles. Her background as a former police officer made the material immediately relatable and easy to understand. I found myself taking copious notes. After the presentation she  saw that I had full pages of information and so graciously offered to send me her powerpoint presentation. In this episode Kim talks with Natasha, a licensed mental health counselor about how trauma can start in childhood and then play out patterns in our adult lives. Oftentimes our nervous system gets triggered from an event that brings about a response to something that happened in the past. We have a choice to decide whether we want to live our lives from a pattern or live a life. The inner work is not easy but so worth it because there is so much freedom when we heal our traumas. "Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom"-Victor Frankl About Natasha: Natasha is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) in the states of Florida, Oregon and Washington, a Florida Qualified Supervisor, a Nationally Certified Counselor (NCC), a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional (CCTP), a Certified Compassion Fatigue Professional (CCFP) and a Compassion Fatigue Educator. Guest: Dr. Steven Lytle, PsyD, Licensed Clinical Psychologist, Founding Partner of Sparrow House Counseling   Dr. Steven Lytle is a licensed psychologist with Sparrow House Counseling in Dallas, Texas. He attended the University of Oklahoma where he received a B.A. in Psychology. He later graduated with an M.A. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Central Oklahoma. Dr. Lytle acquired his Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Argosy University.  Previously, Dr. Lytle worked as a therapist with Green Oaks Hospital in Dallas, Texas as well as counseling families through the juvenile probation department in Dallas County. Steven also served as clinical director of adolescent services at the Cedars Hospital in DeSoto, Texas. Additionally, Dr. Lytle was an adjunct professor of Psychology at Criswell College.   Therapy and counseling were for so long seen as a weakness, not a benefit, especially for men. Why is it so uncommon for men to seek help? Think about a guy in Home Depot - how often do men ask for assistance even with something simple like finding the right tool?   Men are more comfortable with the emotions of anger and stress. Stress is another way of saying “anxiety” but it is very different from anxiety. Stress is usually brought about by a “stressor” - a particular situation/event - and when that stressor is removed, then our stress level goes down. Anxiety can be brought about without an underlying situation. With anxiety, even when our situation is improved, we can feel anxious.   Guys - we need to consider how our “cup” is doing - are we filled too high and need to remove some things from our life - are there too many stressors or anxieties that are filling our cup?   Guys - important to consider how we train up guys to be the men that God has designed for them to be. Not to be carbon copies of their fathers, but to know and understand what God has designed for each individual.   Important to note that masculinity is a God-given concept, not limited to social constructs. Men can cook, sew, do laundry…and a host of things that many in our culture today do not view as things that “men do.”   Recent study had the astronomical number of men who live alone - isolated from community. Men in our culture value “independence,” but we are made for community and being alone and isolated is a difficult situation for an extended time period. Community - “your guys” - is not only valuable, it's hard work to invest in relationships! Guys need “face-to-face” time, but it can be easier to start with “shoulder-to-shoulder” activities.   Train your boys how to have “face-to-face” conversations. It really is an important life skill - especially for building relationships. With the increasing use of mobile phones and technology, we all spend much less time with interpersonal communications.   T4M guys - just a reminder that Training4Manhood is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) ministry and you can make donations either via Zelle (info@training4manhood.com) or by visiting the Training4Manhood website. NY Fashion WeekCEO & Founder, La Beauté Fatale ( The Fatal Beauty)Nevena Tomic is doing things her way when it comes to making a mark in the beauty industry.  As the Founder & CEO of La Beaute Fatale, a cosmetics brand she launched in March 2018, Tomic is committed to providing high-end beauty products made with only top-quality ingredients and minus harmful chemicals.  The end result…everlasting youthfulness.   Tomic has worked in the fashion & beauty space for over ten years at corporate companies such as Walgreens, Sears, and Claire's.  She was a buyer for some of the largest cosmetic brands including L'Oreal, Maybelline, Revlon, Neutrogena, CoverGIrl, Almay and many more.   While continuously choosing and sampling makeup items for the store display, Tomic began to learn about the types of ingredients used in makeup.  It is through this role where gained the knowledge and product intelligence to envision a better future for makeup, where products complement the natural health of a woman's skin. Tomic moved from the sidelines of the beauty biz, to front and center where she could have a say in what ingredients were being put into specific cosmetics. She launched La Beaute Fatale, which translates to “The Fatal Beauty,” a notion that every woman carries an inner beauty that is powerful, strong, and destructive.  Within, the first two years, the company sold over 1.3M units making them a top emerging brand in the market. Tomic graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from the Art Institute of Chicago followed by a Master of Business Administration from Argosy University. Listen to the UPDATE podcast HERE. Jennifer Roach earned a Masters of Divinity from the Seattle School of Theology and Psychology and a Masters of Counseling from Argosy University. She is a licensed Substance Use Disorder counselor, a Clinical Mental Health counselor, and was an ordained Anglican Pastor prior to her baptism in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Highlights 01:15 Kurt introduces the guest and topic of abuse. 03:45 Background of the article from the Associated Press dated August 4th, 2022. The article claims that the Church is hiding abuse. 06:00 Jennifer explains the Church's helpline. 07:00 What is mandated reporting? There are three versions. You must report, no exceptions. You must report but the exceptions are clergy or medical reasons. You may not report. You need to know the laws in your particular state. 9:00 The helpline is there to protect the bishop and the victim. Reporting in each state is very different. 10:30 Kurt breaks down the different kinds of reporting and how complicated it can be in different states. 12:15 Jennifer and Kurt discuss the Arizona case on abuse and the bishop's involvement. There is still so much we don't know. 19:30 The biggest question most of us have is why the Church's attorney on the helpline didn't have the bishop call the police. 22:10 What can we learn from this case of abuse? 23:20 Is the helpline a good idea? 27:00 Kurt and Jennifer discuss whether the Church's hotline should be led by attorneys or social workers and what the role each of these professionals play. 30:15 Background checks catch very few abusers. It only catches people that have been convicted. The background check system can't be fully trusted. 34:00 What can we do to better protect our youth? We can't rely on just one tool. A background check is one tool but not completely reliable. There are many pieces to the pie. 37:10 Another tool that can be used is listening to the kids. You have to be careful with this though. 39:10 When kids reveal abuse it's normally unintentional. Most children won't say outright that they are being abused but leaders and adults should pay attention to the small comments that seem off. 41:15 Statistically most child abuse doesn't happen on a church campus but grooming does. Jennifer shares tactics that abusers use. 42:45 Parents should be very careful with whom they trust. Sleepovers should not be happening. 43:55 It's difficult to identify abusers very accurately. However, it's a little bit easier to accurately identify kids that are being abused. Jennifer shares some things to look out for. 47:00 During the pandemic more kids were abused because they were at home more. Home is the most likely place that kids are getting abused. There is no for sure way to make sure that a kid doesn't get abused. 48:15 We are saving and protecting way more potential victims than those that are getting victimized. While we don't have a perfect system, it's also not fair to say that our system is completely broken. 49:30 What does the Church gain by protecting abusers? 50:45 One of the protective factors for kids in our church is that people change callings all the time. It's different from other churches where the pastor is abusing kids for 40 years. 51:50 While we can respect the writer of the AP article, there are some things that he did get wrong. For example, there is no evidence that indicates that the Church covered up any evidence. 53:40 The article implies that hiding abuse is the norm. The main message that people are getting is that the Church hides abuse on the regular.
