This episode of the Language of Love is a special one! I'm thrilled to share with you the beautiful talk Biet Simkin gave at our Good Grief Day event. Biet is a spiritual teacher and musician whose life story is a profound testament to the resilience of the human spirit. She shares her journey of healing and takes us through her powerful breathwork practice (make sure you aren't driving or operating heavy machinery when you do it!).  Biet opens her heart to us, sharing her personal narrative of navigating through the darkest valleys of loss and emerging into the light of purpose and spiritual awakening. She speaks candidly about her descent into depression and self-destructive behavior, a tumultuous period exacerbated by the vibrant yet chaotic New York City art scene. The story takes a heartbreaking turn when she recounts the unimaginable loss of her infant daughter to sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). That tragedy was only compounded by the subsequent deaths of her father and the loss of her home. It's at her breaking point that Biet surrenders to a higher power, marking the beginning of her transformation. She leads us in a grief meditation and discusses her unique breathwork technique. I have personally experienced the benefits of breathwork and can't wait for you to try it. You will learn: Biet's personal story of loss; her struggles with depression, substance abuse, and grief, and how it transformed her Biet's insights on grief and leading the audience through a grief meditation exercise Recommendations for practicing breathwork at home Personal stories of loss and healing shared by the audience I invite you to join us on this journey. Biet Simkin is definitely a unique voice in the meditation world. She is a bridge between the ancient work of shamans and the modern language of rock and roll and fashion. Biet is best known for modernizing the spiritual path and has been called the "Meditation Guru for the next generation.” Her immersive meditation experiences have reached contemporary audiences in cultural spaces, including museums, hotels, and fashion shows. She even scores her own music to go along with these experiences and she was one of the first to mix meditation with pop culture. Biet learned most of her spiritual teachings from her father who exposed her to a wide variety of material in her teen years. Biet's father was a medical doctor in Russia, before they immigrated to New York. He had healed himself of Tuberculosis and became a practicing shaman and healer. Biet lost her beloved mother at a very young age and was left to fend for herself in day to day life. A talented singer and songwriter, she fell into the rock and roll world, eventually spiraling down into addiction. She found a deep resilience after many tragic losses and now she straddles both the deep spiritual world where material goods mean nothing and the day to day, practical spiritual world, where everything from temper tantrums to material desires all exist. She shows us that these things can, and do, co-exist. Biet's refreshing take on unapologetically embracing the entirety of human existence, the range of ugly to beautiful, is really quite extraordinary. I'm certain that this is the reason so many people resonate with her teachings. Biet Simkin is truly a remarkable human being. Raised by an awakened shaman to meditate as a toddler. Signed to Sony Records at the age of nineteen, she lived the rock ‘n’ roll glam life in New York City for years, until she finally fell to pieces as a heroin addict. In rapid succession, a near death experience, the tragic deaths of her infant child and father, as well as a fire that burnt down her home, propelled her to sober up. As she moved from meltdowns to miracles, she began to teach meditation to private clients, eventually founding her own meditation system. Described as the “David Bowie of Meditation” and featured in FORBES, ELLE, Harper’s Bazaar, TIME & The New York Times, she is now one of the most prominent of the new wave of spiritual teachers in America. In this week’s conversation we talk about how she forged the spiritual philosophy she has today and how it encapsulates the 44 laws she writes about in her best-selling book Don’t Just Sit There. We spoke about the intersection of art, beauty, mysticism and spirituality, and her future plans to create transformational art to facilitate the global rise in consciousness. You can keep in touch with Biet via her website and Instagram. Enjoy!

Biet is this completely unique Spiritual Teacher with a rare Rock & Roll sensibility who was raised by an awakened Shaman who cured himself from near death in the woods of Russia. With that said, I think what makes her story even more special is the amount of adversity she has overcome. Losing most of her family to death as a young child growing up in NYC, tragedy turned into music and she got signed to Sony Records at 18, after that she had a near death experience, lost her 4 month old daughter Ula to S.I.D.S, had her house burn down, lived in the burned down house doing heroin for 4 months, her best friends hung himself and then her awakened teacher father died. After 5 years of heroin and cocaine addiction Biet got sober nearly 11 years ago and founded a meditation experience that she guides globally and scores with her own music. Her work is just as warm and intimate with a group of 12 people in a living room as it is with thousands of people on a stage. She has been called the "David Bowie of Meditation" by Television Host and Activist, Stacy London. She has been written up in FORBES, ELLE, Harper's Bazaar, TIME & The New York Times.. just to name a few. She has partnered with Lululemon, Adidas and Sony to name just a couple. She has just released her first book with Simon & Schuster based on the 44 laws that prevent someone from enlightenment and is speaking all over the globe to spread the message of awakening and doing it in a down to earth way!

When spiritual teacher Biet Simkin and I created "sober curious" event series Club SÖDA NYC, our goal was to extend the invitation of sobriety beyond 12-step or recovery circles to anybody questioning their relationship to booze. Three years later, these events have played a pivotal role in helping shift thinking about drinking—as noted in a 2019 write-up in the NY Times on "The New Sobriety"! Now nearly 11 years clean from alcohol, cocaine, and heroin abuse, in this episode Biet shares the story of the "awakening" that led to her getting sober, as well as some signature rock 'n' roll teachings and insights from her new book, Don't Just Sit There! In this conversation, which contains STRONG language and a few trigger warnings (beware!) we also discuss: -The lies we are telling ourselves when we're numbing with drugs & alcohol -Why not drinking is a shocking and rebellious act -Why tragedy and loss can be calls to a personal awakening -Why it is impossible to shut down the "negative" parts of being human, and how to accept them -Why doing cocaine off toilets with celebrities is NOT a sign that you have "made it" Discover more about Biet Simkin and her work HERE, follow her on Instagram, and get a copy of her book HERE. This week we have a total rockstar guest for you: Biet Simkin! Biet has an incredible story of trauma, discovery and growth and we totally bonded during this interview. I felt like we’d been lifelong friends, and hopefully you will too. Please note that there is some adult language and content in the episode, so please put headphones on if there are sensitive ears nearby. Also, Biet leads us in a gorgeous meditation (complete with her original music) towards the end of the recording. If you’re listening while driving or operating machinery, you must pause the interview at that point and only participate in the meditation when you are in a safe place. About Biet Biet Simkin is the Founder of Center of the Cyclone, an immersive experience that weaves meditation, self inquiry, art, music and fashion, offering an explosive experience. She is inspired by the rare and almost impossible task of entering into the present moment and creates this experience globally. After 30 years of study in the field Biet’s feeling was that the world of the intellect, fashion and art needed spirituality, and the world of spirituality was often missing the mark and needed some vanity and fire. Colliding these two worlds, Biet has created events with MoMA, Lululemon, SoulCycle, Summit Series, Vice, Free People, Sundance Film Festival, Bonnaroo Festival, Soho House, Mind Body Green, 1 Hotels, Neuehouse, Wanderlust Festival, Adidas, Samsung, Sony and more. Currently Biet has a book about the laws of meditation entitled "Don't Just Sit There!" to be released in Spring of 2019 with Simon & Schuster. She is the resident and in-house Meditation Leader at all 1 Hotels with in-room content across all properties. Biet is also the voice of Expectful, a meditation app for pregnant expecting mothers. Meditation with Biet is different in that it is more emotional, her work takes you through the emotional, intellectual, instinctive and moving centers to get to a place of equanimity and joy. Through private one on ones, corporate groups, parties, speaking engagements and pop-ups in museums and art galleries, Biet is bringing this big work into the world and helping raise consciousness from the outside in. Her work is also unique as it is bringing the sound of her music into the meditation experiences and giving music a new venue. Her latest album ‘The Lunar’ debuted September 2015. Her work has been featured in Harper’s Bazaar, ELLE, Vogue, The Observer, TIME Magazine, Forbes, The London Times and more! My favorite moments and takeaways from our conversation: Biet grew up unconventionally - a child of Russian Jews who fled their communist country, Biet was their “freedom child” Biet’s father was a spiritual teacher so spirituality was something Biet grew up around Biet went on to live an unconventional life as well when she pursued a music career - it was very much sex, drugs, rock and roll for Biet During her time as a musician, Biet used alcohol and later harder drugs to get into a spiritual space, as her life actually felt very empty The deaths of family members, and particularly her father, escalated a life change for Biet that made her re-evaluate her path Biet felt that the universe was asking her to continue her father’s work as a spiritual teacher….and so she did In the beginning, Biet was working random side jobs for cash while she asked friends if anyone wanted to be coached/guided by her and to just “pay what they want to pay her” as a means to start her work as a spiritual teacher Eventually, Biet was hosting spiritual events at well known places like Art Basel, Sundance Film Festival, Soul Cycle, and with brands like Adidas, Sony, Samsung Biet recently had a baby girl, which brought with it its own challenges, but she is loving motherhood so far Biet’s has a new book, “Don’t Just Sit There!” is to be released this spring Biet is also seeking new coaching clients Connect with Biet: Instagram: @guidedbybiet bietsimkin.com Biet’s Book Here’s to Getting Unstuck, Cynthia Sponsor Love: Today’s episode is brought to you by Russ Hickman Photography. This week on the Alchemized Life Podcast we welcome Biet Simkin, spiritual teacher and author, for a conversation on modern meditation, moving through shame and guilt, finding forgiveness, and turning your past into your superpower.     A spiritual teacher and author, Biet was raised by an awakened Shaman to meditate as a toddler. Signed to Sony Records at the age of nineteen, she lived the rock ‘n' roll glam life in New York City for years, until she finally fell to pieces as a heroin addict. In rapid succession, a near death experience, the tragic deaths of her infant child and father, as well as a fire that burnt down her home, propelled her to sober up. As she moved from meltdowns to miracles, she began to teach meditation to private clients, eventually founding a one of a kind system, Center of the Cyclone™ meditation.   In this episode, Biet shares with us her powerful story of hitting rock bottom and finding sobriety, using the practice of divided attention to catapult her self-development and fully see herself as who she is, and how her system, Center of the Cyclone™, came into fruition.   Find out more about Biet Simkin: WEBSITE | INSTAGRAM Mentioned: Homecoming by John Bradshaw: https://amzn.to/2EPiwc5 (AMAZON) Visit www.AvaJohanna.com

Biet Simkin is an artist and spiritual teacher who cusses like Louis C.K. and has founded a meditation system that she brings to museums, festivals, and summits around the world. BIET SIMKIN is probably the most interesting person in the world ... seriously, your mind is about to be BLOWN. The sh*t that she's been through and the person who she has become because of that is BEYOND all of our dreams of determination and strength. So Krista + Lindsey are peeling back the layers of the goddess Biet Simkin ... For those of you who don't know who Miss Simkin is, she New York native, first-generation American and a leader in the world of meditation. Not only was her father a philosophical shaman and gave her the Book of the Dead at age nine, Biet was singer and fashion fiend who spent a big part of her life living the life of sex, drugs, and rock n' roll. And not the glamorous, Hollywood kind. After struggling with a drug and alcohol addiction, mourning her father's death, as well as her child's passing, Biet talks about her Ah-Ha moment of sobering up and changing her life for good. She knew it was time to find the person she was meant to be, which is what this episode is all about. The journey to find your identity is hard for everyone, and Biet has developed a meditation technique not only to help you find it but to help you be the best person you can be. Her technique is like "watching a documentary on yourself" and observing your every move AKA "Divided Attention Mediation". Another amazing point Biet stress' is how we are more than just our body and our minds. Everything from hallucinations, serendipity, and voices - those all mean more than we know. And Biet talks about how listening to these transcendental messages LITERALLY saved her LIFE and how her practice develops this kind of acknowledgment. It's a spirituality POW WOW worth taking a listen to #Almost30Nation!

My guest today is meditation teacher, musician and all around creatrix, Biet Simkin who's based out of NYC. Biet is a wonderful example of someone who's let her inner life guide her external life (is there really a difference?) which is working out pretty pretty great for her. As you'll hear in the episode Biet is also an incredibly genuine and love-filled person. Coincidentally, my favorite type of person! Biet is also leading guided sound meditations at Further Future a music and lifestyle festival taking place April 29 through Sunday May 1, 2016 at the Moapa River Indian Reservation near Las Vegas, Nevada. More details inside the episode but Further Future is going to be an amazing time and experience and if I didn't have a baby due right when it was taking place I'd be attending. Find out more about Further Future here: http://www.furtherfuture.com/ Topics Discussed in This Episode The blessing of Biet's tragic upbringing Biet's father, Grigori Simkin Overcoming depression and addiction Biet's musical career Changing your mind to change your life Surrendering Suffering Listening to your inner voice Radical Joy Being Sober and Getting High (off your own supply) Closing song is "Si Do Hymn" from Biet's most recent album, "The Lunar" As always, subscribe to Synchronicity on iTunes and Stitcher and rate and review if you haven't already. Many thanks to Jordan from Further Future/Robot Heart for linking me and Biet. You rule Jordan!
