Remember When… We Actually Won Something

Remember When is a show that brings together football fans from across the UK to talk about the seismic moments that shaped their club's history - and had a massive impact on their own lives too. Rather than being about tribal division or comparing between the haves versus the have-nots, it's about the stories, the memories and the moments that unite us as football fans - whoever we support. This time, Remember When looks back at two of the most memorable FA Cup triumphs in English football history. Wimbledon and Portsmouth have suffered more than their fair share of hardship over the years, with trophy cabinets smaller than plenty of their Football League counterparts. But both clubs and their fans share an increasingly rare privilege: they won the FA Cup against the odds. Broadcaster Rick Edwards is joined by two guests who were right at the heart of the action. Marc Jones fell in love with Wimbledon after an inadvertent trip to Plough Lane in the 1980s and followed their ragtag bunch of cult heroes to the 1988 FA Cup final, where the Crazy Gang ended the day on that hallowed top Wembley step after beating a brilliant Liverpool team. Jeff Harris made a similar pilgrimage twenty years later, when his beloved Portsmouth scratched and clawed their way to the final of the 2008 FA Cup. He'd recently returned from working overseas for the British Army and watched Kanu and company complete their own journey to greatness at the new Wembley. Marc and Jeff share their hilarious and often heartfelt memories of seeing their local clubs reach footballing immortality. From that snowballing belief as their clubs marched through the rounds at the expense of numerous top-flight counterparts, to organising double-decker buses and flights back from military bases to make sure they joined friends and family at Wembley. They also remember the aftermath, as Jeff bolted back down to Portsmouth and joined in celebrations across the city while Marc caught sight of Wimbledon manager Bobby Gould bringing the trophy back to Plough Lane at the front of the team coach. They also touch on how these victories marked important moments in their own young lives, with football acting as the catalyst for moments of joy, melancholy and belonging. Remember When is a celebration of what football's all about: moments etched into history for the fans and players of two clubs who might never experience it again. This is Remember When… We Actually Won Something.

Richard Kincaid, the State Director of Career and Technical Education for the District of Columbia, shares his journey to becoming a passionate advocate for educational equity and opportunity. His career spans over two decades, during which he has dedicated himself to building systems that drive meaningful impact in K-12 public schools, government, and educational non-profits. Kincaid's focus is on Career and Technical Education (CTE), providing students with access to diverse pathways beyond traditional academia, whether directly into college, the workforce, or national service. The conversation delves into the establishment of Washington, DC's first Advanced Technical Center (ATC), aimed at providing CTE courses that were previously out of reach for many students. The ATC offers programs in nursing, cybersecurity, and more, providing students with industry-recognized credentials and dual credits, saving them thousands of dollars in future education costs. Kincaid highlights the center's inclusive transportation model, ensuring access for all students regardless of location. Moreover, Kincaid discusses the significance of CTE programs in addressing workforce shortages, particularly in high-demand fields. He emphasizes the need to dispel stigmas surrounding trades and vocational education, showcasing success stories of students finding fulfilling careers through CTE pathways.   Resources: Today's sponsor, Xello is the only career development program built with the entire district community in mind. In this episode, guest co-host Jeff Harris (Behind The Grooves) and me explore the musical enigma known as Steely Dan!  And for the record, Steely Dan is a group, not just one guy.A group that defies easy categorization, as they mix rock, jazz, pop, funk, and lyrics that are sometimes inscrutable, but always interesting.  Donald Fagen and Walter Becker were two friends who met in college and set about writing songs that were an arty blend of their many musical and literary influences. We explore the original era of Steely Dan, spanning 1972-1980.  We delve into each album, the songs, the stories, the many musicians who helped Becker and Fagen realize their esoteric musical visions and ultimately, why we love these albums so much.  We try and shed some light on what Steely Dan was all about.Check out Jeff Harris's Behind The Grooves music blog: https://www.patreon.com/behindthegrooves/about?fbclid=IwAR3TFDb9hvywTPXcYlTaD5OgTloCjDHcGYJzOSG4uh-hDkd-OzfhvXkJHGM

In our fractured age, crafting a brand that emotionally inspires trust and loyalty from both customers and employees can seem impossible for large organizations. However, Jeff Harris, Chief Marketing Officer of Sam Houston State University, believes that large brands orgs can still connect authentically in 2024 if they focus on amplifying internal purpose over imposing external perceptions. We got Jeff in the hot seat to break down his six critical insights for C-suite leaders to pilot a cultural marketing renaissance at organizations in 2024 by looking at how he brings them to life at Sam Houston State. Jeff has steadily elevated regional academic institutions' brands for over a decade by fundamentally listening and understanding audiences before building marketing strategies. He sees the marketing team's role as almost entirely supportive – bringing together disparate organizational voices into compelling, cohesive stories that serve others while advancing the collective mission.

As part of our community health partnership with Valley Health, we talked with Dr. Jim VanKirk, a board-certified palliative care specialist and Medical Director of Valley Health's palliative care program. Dr. VanKirk explained the role of palliative medicine, which is to work with patients with serious (possibly life-threatening) illnesses and help alleviate burdensome symptoms, while the patient is still pursuing aggressive treatments. He clarified that hospice care is a later stage of palliative medicine, often when the patient stops further life-prolonging therapies and focuses on comfort. Dr. Jeff Harris joined Dr. VanKirk to talk about advance care planning. Dr. Harris is part of a volunteer group of retired physicians who offer their (free) consultative services to help families work through the details of setting up medical directives. Dr. Harris discussed the importance of discussing end-of-life plans with patients through the use of an Advance Directive, such as '5 Wishes'. He explained the benefits of walking through this document with individuals, including the opportunity to discuss other practical and emotional considerations. He also noted that the hospital provides support for these discussions through volunteers and meeting space, with no charge to patients. Dr. Harris emphasized the value of having conversations about end-of-life wishes ahead of time, which can help prevent disagreements among family members and make the process easier for everyone involved. He also highlighted the importance of having these wishes legally documented, such as through the 5 Wishes form recognized by Valley Health. He explained that 5 Wishes was chosen for its wide recognition across multiple states, making it more likely for an individual's wishes to be honored regardless of where they are. People interested in discussing healthcare decisions can call 540-536-5437 to book a one-hour meeting with one of the four specialists.

Though she will no longer be on the Sacramento City Council dais come January, District 1's Angelique Ashby (flanked by District 3's Jeff Harris and the people who led the failed recall against District 4's Katie Valenzuela) held a press conference in wealthy East Sacramento's McKinley Park to champion an ordinance banning homeless camps within 500 feet of schools. Will this have any effect on the homelessness crisis? Of course not. But Ashby--who is lagging badly in her California Senate race--will do whatever she can for a headline these days. Even if that means terrorizing our unhoused neighbors. We also discuss the recent string of shootings in Sacramento, and what is being done to curb gun violence in the city. Remember when America's Landlord Steve Maviglio went on a racist, xenophobic tirade against Councilmember Valenzuela after the Midtown shooting? Why was he so silent in the ensuing days, when gun violence rocked the districts of council members Sean Loloee, Jeff Harris and Jay Schenirer? Sacramento's police have never been more well funded or more heavily armed than they are today. And yet gun violence persists. That's because the police don't actually exist to prevent crime. They just respond to it. Yet our very conservative council members continue to try to defund the social programs that can actually curb violence in the community. One of the core competencies of successful recruiters is influence. When Cathy Stewart became a recruiter 15 years ago, recruiting seemed like a perfect fit based on her ability to build trust and influence others. In this episode, Cathy reveals her exact approach to influencing people which has enabled her to become a top biller.  Recruiting is actually Cathy's third career. Prior to becoming a recruiter, she started out as a music teacher before going on to achieve great success in direct home selling, building a multi-million dollar organization.   Cathy Stewart is the Vice President of the Senior Living Division with Jeff Harris and Associates. Since she began her recruiting career in 2008, Cathy has been a consistent top biller and she became a Pinnacle Society Member in 2018. Episode Outline and Highlights [2:43] How Cathy went from music teacher to top-producing recruiter. [6:31] Exploring the Senior Living niche. [08:37] Cathy's greatest accomplishment as a recruiter [11:38] The ‘doctor' mindset in recruiting. [14:10] How to maintain a positive mindset. [24:06] How to master the art of becoming an influencer and trust builder. [38:17] Cathy's comparison of contingent vs retained. [47:46] Client development and not putting all your eggs in one basket. [57:10] Work-life balance and creating your dream life. The Keys to Success in Recruitment Cathy is an achiever. Since she began her recruiting career in 2008 she has been the lead recruiter and top biller in the office her entire recruiting career and she became a Pinnacle Society Member in 2018. But what would she consider her proudest accomplishment as a recruiter?  “I don't see myself as a super special awesome person. I just think that I am really good at the basics,” is how Cathy describes it. Here are the key things that she believes have contributed to her success: Mindset Influencing Skills Building Trust Work-life Balance and Creating Your Own Dream Life Creating and Maintaining a Positive Mindset A positive mindset is not something you will get from someone else. You must create and maintain it within yourself. Cathy shares this from a recruiter's perspective: it is about being passionate about your selected niche. It is about having a solid foundation of ‘Why'. Her love for seniors really motivates her to consistently do her best in her chosen niche which is senior living. She also added, “Being able to stay positive is really about gratitude. You can't feel anxiety and negativity if you feel gratitude.” Honing Your Influencing Skills and Building Trust Cathy believes that influence is her “superpower.” How does she do it? As a DISC profiler, Cathy applies her knowledge and understanding of personalities when communicating with her stakeholders. An important key is having conscious self-awareness about both your own personality profile and the other party's. This plays a huge role when influencing and building trust.  Her sales background trained her to hone this approach when dealing with hiring managers, and interviewing candidates. She explains in detail how she incorporates these influencing skills in the recruitment process. Read Full Bio   Jed Manton Jed Manton is committed to representing individuals and business that have been harmed by the actions of others. With a solid track record, Jed has helped numerous clients who have been seriously injured or who have lost a loved one obtain justice, while holding the wrongdoer accountable. Many injuries occur because of a single individual's carelessness. However, Jed also recognizes that oftentimes tragedy strikes as a result of a series of missteps by multiple people. For example, the poor design of a road or the defective design of a particular automobile often plays a significant role in an automobile wreck. In three recent cases, Jed helped secure over $8 million for families where the police initially determined that HLM's client was at fault for the collision. After the firm's thorough investigation, the true cause for each wreck was determined to be a poorly designed road. Jed has also helped families secure millions of dollars of compensation related to defective automobiles. Whether it is a defective tire, a poor braking system, an overworked truck driver or the improper location of a guardrail, Jed always digs deep into the underlying facts of each case to ensure that all responsible parties are identified and held accountable for their actions. While the cornerstone of the justice system is making sure an injured client is fairly compensated for his or her past and future injuries, Jed takes particular satisfaction in knowing that HLM's work has resulted in roads being made safer, cars being designed differently and facilities being investigated by law enforcement to prevent needless injuries to others. Sacramento City Councilmember Sean Loloee continued his personal war against affordable housing last week in spectacular fashion, claiming repeatedly that a proposed 124-unit apartment building for low-income residents in his district would "destroy a community," and then arguing with Mayor Darrell Steinberg. This simple item on the consent calendar--which was nothing more than a nod to the nonprofit developer to apply for $5.7 million in grants so that city residents wouldn't have to foot the bill--should have taken no more than a couple of minutes to pass. But Loloee harnessed the NIMBY rage of Woodlake homeowners to drag the item on for nearly two hours. The item passed, but just barely. Councilmembers Angelique Ashby, Jeff Harris and Mai Vang voted against the money, showing that the future of affordable housing in Sacramento rests on a razor's edge. Guest host/librarian Tibby also shares a bit about her new show, The At Home Librarian Podcast, which she hosts with her educator friend Alexis.
