Embodying Spontaneity: A Conversation With Jozef Frucek of Fighting Monkey   In conversation, I had the great pleasure of speaking with Jozef Frucek. He and Linda Kapetanea are the creators of Fighting Monkey, which is a beautiful system that weaves together movement, learning, communication, creativity, improvisation and a re-imagination of the process and experience of aging.    Jozef has studied deeply in Chinese medicine and martial arts along with having advanced degrees in voice and movement. He and Linda teach at Universities and dance and performance companies around the world.    I had followed Fighting Monkey for many years in the natural movement world, and was able take some classes with Jozef when they began teaching online during the pandemic. I was reminded of a line from one of our Feldenkrais teachers, Ruthy Alon, who coined the term “the grammar of spontaneity.” I find that Fighting Monkey helps to grow a grammar of spontaneous, natural, dynamic movement that weaves together essential principles from many movement traditions.     In our conversation, Jozef and I speak about how growing our spontaneity and creativity in movement increases our sense of creativity and spontaneity in how we live, how we think, how we speak, and express ourselves. We also discuss how essential new ways of thinking and participating in the world are, given the immense challenges we face in these times. We speak of the importance of systems based practice when it comes to movement and to life. We discuss the importance of play in learning, and how many adults forget how to learn and play as we age. We also look at the aging process, and how the manner in which we approach our movement shapes how we approach our aging process. Épisode 46 du podcast dans lequel j'ai le plaisir d'accueillir un collègue enseignant et passionné de mouvement : Sylvain Noury de Amplitude Movement Bordeaux pour 2 heures de conversation fascinante et inspirante sur cette pratique généraliste, holistique, et ce rapport plus intime à sa physicalité.Une occasion de plonger dans l'univers du mouvement, depuis la pratique à la philosophie qui l'entoure, comment reconnecter avec son corps, redévelopper la conscience corporelle, et petit à petit commencer son aventure vers une plus grande autonomie et liberté physique.Sylvain a commencé son aventure physique avec les arts martiaux traditionnels avant d'explorer les différents univers de la Calisthénie, de la force, de la locomotion et trouver inspirations chez des figures comme Ido Portal, Jozef Frucek ou encore Marcello Palozzo.Sylvain représente parfaitement l'idée de l'éternel étudiant, constamment à rechercher de nouvelles idées, manipuler et faire communiquer différents concepts ensemble, à remettre en question sa pratique et trouver sa propre voix.C'est cette mentalité du Shôshin qui le conduit à imaginer ses propres outils, les implémenter sur lui-même puis à les enseigner à ses élèves. L'idée est de ne jamais quitter le bac à sable, de continuellement chercher à s'améliorer, à jouer, à apprendre de nouvelles compétences, mais laisser faire les choses avec un désengagement total.Un échange autour de l'importance de la Praxis, de dédier du temps aux choses pour qu'on puisse en extraire toutes les gemmes. Sylvain a cette capacité à prendre de la hauteur sur ce qu'il fait, ses entraînements, ses lectures, ses enseignements... pour pouvoir être à la fois acteur et observateur. Kenan Dinkelmann grew up in Passau, Germany and graduated from Artez, School of Dance, Arnhem with a BA of performing arts and completed the SEAD postgraduate program Bodhi Project directed by Susan Quinn where he toured works by Jozef Frucek & Linda Kapetanea, Martin Nachbar and Robert Clark in Europe. As freelance dancer Kenan worked with Johannes Wieland, Marion Sparber, Ivan Perez, Unterwegstheater and Anton Lachky. From 2015 till 2017 he joined the dance company of Stadttheater Bielefeld where he danced in works by Wim Vandekeybus, Simone Sandroni and Sharon Fridman. Kenan is guest teacher at Stadttheater Bielefeld, Marameo Berlin, TRAK Dance Ensemble and Tanzbüro Basel. Furthermore he tours his Flow Acrobatics workshops in Europe and offers online training programs and online coaching in Flow Acrobatics. Soisci Porchetta on the Passive Hang ! (@soisci_human_patterns). Soisci is a movement teacher at @praksiscanberra, in a former life was a Muay Thai World Champion, and has studied closely with Ido Portal and Jozef Frucek.  I met Soisci last year when I went up to @praksiscanberra. I took several classes she led - movement practice, handstand, longevity, and even had the pleasure of training alongside her during the Capoeira workshop. One of the moments that stood out from that trip was having a meal together with other students on a Friday night, after class. It was great to see that in this community, people were choosing on a Friday evening, to practise and hang out with each other. Most gyms down here in Melbourne don't even have a Friday evening class, knowing that people prefer to go out to bars and restaurants.  Soisci leads a class with gentle authority, where all types of tasks and movements are instructed. Each class I left feeling aware and energised, which is exactly what her movement practice class theme was at the time - “Energising, Imaginative, Presence”. Taking an intuitive approach, she leads the room with a sense of love, care and empowerment. In this episode I get to ask her about how she thinks about teaching, and how her own teaching style has developed.  There's a strong sense of “human first” approach - understanding that as students, the emotional and social contexts need to be considered, not just our biomechanical, physical capabilities.  Soisci also shares her concept of “Lazy Man Training” and origins of her nickname, Puma.  A great conversation. It’s been a year since the Passive Hang launched it’s first episode. The first episode was a solo episode, and episode 49 is an update from the host. Sharing reflections of my movement journey, and of the Passive Hang.    It’s a special time for me at the moment - I have just finished with my teacher, @tejovra.    I’ve been learning from him for 2 years. During this time my physicality has transformed from a state of fragility to a state of confidence and play.   @tejovra guided me skilfully through generalist strength and mobility development, improved my handstand from 20s to 60s, handstand pushup, straddle press, 10 muscle ups…. sprinting… ballet squats…   But this is nothing compared to the powerful lessons and experiences he facilitated - I couldn’t do any vertical pulling without pain - to being able to one arm active hang.  I had constant upper trap tension in my neck - to where my neck actually feels supple.  I basically couldn’t spread my legs at all and this caused inside knee pain on my right side - to being able to train middle splits without dying.    I have read all about “movement approaches” to injury rehabilitation… but it’s one thing reading about it and another thing actually trusting in a process and doing it and seeing that it can work. Despite these issues which would have stopped me from training before, we approached this in an intelligent way - working with and through the injuries - until when the pain subsided and I came out actually stronger than before.    @tejovra showed me what actual quality training is… before I thought I was training but with no eye for detail. I had to go all the way back to the start (doing pushups on my knees!!), remove my ego and rebuild better movement patterns.   In this episode I share 4 key learnings from my time with @tejovra. High quality basics … are key.  Generalist strength and mobility training sets you up for complexity. Emma is a Movement teacher and one of the Founders of Aspen Coaching in Perth, WA. She has been teaching people to move better in an evolving capacity for the past 13 years. Having watched many fitness trends sweep through the exercise world she has carefully and thoroughly danced between them deciding to wander down her own path, endeavoring to make a shift in the common perspective of what it means to be fit and healthy. Along with her Husband, Glenn Robson, and business partner Paul Twyman, they have opened a unique movement space in Perth that encourages people to step outside of seeking weight loss and fitness, and instead begin to create a deeper relationship with themselves, and respect for what their body really needs. Over the past 4 years Emma has worked closely with the Fighting Monkey Practice and is currently wrapping up a year long Mentorship with Jozef Frucek. The study through the FM Practice has been very influential on her teaching and her outlook on how we live our lives. Emma is passionate about working with people with chronic injuries and inflammatory conditions and believes that through movement we can make a big impact on the trajectory of our future. In this conversation, she discusses her newborn baby, and what her life looks like as a new mother. She shares the backstory of Aspen Coaching, and their approach to a movement practice. Tomislav is a former professional dancer and performer, who since 2014 has been part of the development of Ferus Animi // Terra Nova, a movement research collective based in Europe. Ferus Animi's mission statement is to share and disseminate the most up-to-date research from a host of scientific and artistic disciplines, including neuroscience, evolutionary physiology, biomechanics, psychology and philosophy, in a relevant and accessible way, to enrich the practices of their students and collaborators. Tomislav is a current Master of Science student at Trinity LABAN Conservatoire (department of Dance Science) in London, and a graduate of the Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance, London Contemporary Dance School and the Oxford School of Drama, holding a 1st-class Bachelor of Arts degree. Soisci is a movement and meditation teacher based in Australia. She has been practicing for over seventeen years and teaching for the past nine years. Her formal movement practice began with martial arts, which culminated when she became Muay Thai world champion in 2011. Soisci transitioned into a generalist movement practice in 2013 when she studied personally with Ido Portal and Odelia Goldsmidt for four years. Today she studies movement from Jozef Frucek and Linda Kapetanea, and has a spiritual mentor, Rajivji Kapur, whose influence has been most transformative for her. Soisci's story and teachings are an amalgamation of all the different unique experiences that have made up her life so far; her Eurasian heritage, growing up in eight different countries, competing professionally in BJJ and Muay Thai, having a keen passion for cooking and creative expression, meditation, learning from some of the best contemporary movement teachers, and using movement practice as a method for self-observation, creativity and embodying your highest self. In this conversation, Soisci tells her story of competing in martial arts and the discovery of a generalist movement practice. Elke Schroeder is a Toronto-based dance artist. A graduate of The School of Toronto Dance Theatre in 2005, she has worked with Lucy Rupert /Blue Ceiling Dance (as a dancer and artistic associate), Alias Dance Project, TILT Sound + Motion, Frog in Hand, and with choreographers Jenn Goodwin, Amanda Acorn, Susie Burpee and Andrea Nann (among others). Currently she is creating solo works for her company One Animal, just finished a creation for L'École de Danse de Québec, and is dancing in a new creation by Karen Kaeja. Elke's diverse movement background includes dance of many styles, floorwork, acrobatics, yoga (Octopus Garden Teachers Training and Mentorship programs graduate), functional movement and martial arts. Her greatest influence is the Fighting Monkey Practice, a task-based, longevity-driven practice created by Jozef Frucek and Linda Kapetanea (RootlessRoot). A close student of Jozef and Linda, Elke is a designated FM instructor. In addition, she owes much credit to her other main teachers: David Zambrano (creator of Flying Low), Iñaki Azpillaga (Ultima Vez) and Peter Jasko (Les Slovaks). A passionate teacher, Elke has taught for organizations such as Spirit Loft (Toronto), Toronto Dance Community Love-in, L'Artère Danse, L'École de Danse de Québec, The School of Toronto Dance Theatre, the University of Calgary, Ryerson Unversity, Jane Clapp/Movement for Trauma, GMD (Toronto) and YMI Dancers (Toronto). Elke is known for her explosive performance quality and skills on the floor; she moves like, “an almost literal ball of effervescent energy, like a swiftly tilting planet falling out of orbit” (Mooney on Theatre). She is an active creator and performer and travels her work throughout Canada and abroad. During this conversation Elke and Kyle discuss embracing uncertainty, exploration, and shedding rigidity. Elke shares about her first exposure to Fighting Monkey coordinations. They ask the question, "What is a generalist?" And, they dig into the the concepts of resilience and change.

Heisenberg's uncertainty principle asserts that we are always operating in a state of limited understanding. That allowed me to look from the outside and get a fresh look on why I think the best players are getting injured so much and what could be improved in their training. Diversity breeds immunity. Every great system also creates great deficiency.    Most people think strength is always the answer. But we believe there are many things that come before strength. We first work with coordination, then when we get more organized we find a rhythm. Then that rhythm leads us to more kinetic potential and kinetic potential leads to power exploration. Power exploration then leads us to strength training.   We want baseball players bodies to work in one rhythmic unit spending less energy on moving and putting more energy on where to react properly and making the right decisions.     My background is in art, and what is the most important thing in art? Staying creative. We need to always stay creative and find new alterations We all need to improve our training methods. We're kind of sleeping there because we have good training methods. What blocks us just being good to getting better? We need to be pushed to look past what is obvious. He was on fire in this interview. We were all over the place with too many ideas thrown out to track completely. Fighting Monkey and Evolve Move Play are very similar conceptually and contain many similar elements, with the differences arising partially from our different movement backgrounds, as well as our personalities and philosophies. One of the key ideas in movement practice and indeed in life is the balance between form and formlessness. When we create order and structure we give ourselves a scaffolding to work from and a goal to work towards but we constrain our options, constrain what we can perceive, how we can act. Conversely, with formlessness the potential is limitless but direction is difficult. The biggest difference between FM and EMP seems to be in the balance found here. The Fighting Monkey practice leans towards formlessness, to the way of having no way, whereas EMP focuses more on trying to articulate an optimal structure. This theme I think runs through our whole conversation, while touching on many specific aspects of practice and movement philosophy. Specific topics covered include: 1.
