Attention all runners! Are you a runner that is purely performance orientated? Do you obsess over your GPS and strava data? Are you guilty of becoming a slave to your running program? Well, this episode is tailor-made for you. Last week, I had the honor of engaging in an unforgettable conversation with Jozef Frucek, the brilliant mind behind Fighting Monkey. I must confess, this discussion stands among my all-time favorite podcast moments. Jozef's unique creative flair and his ability to seamlessly fuse the artistic side of sport captured my heart. Throughout our dialogue, we delved deep into the challenges posed by modern Western culture, where money, efficiency, speed, numbers, measurement, and science tend to overshadow other aspects. While these factors may appear explicit and apparent, we should never overlook the immeasurable treasure of tacit knowledge. Jozef possesses an astonishing talent for articulating the intangible, abstract elements of movement. He emphasizes the necessity of diversity, variability, intuition, improvisation, communication, embodiment, rhythm, coordination, and so much more. In a society fixated on data and disconnected from our innate knowledge, Jozef's insights are nothing short of invaluable. So, whether you're eager to challenge the conventional training methods or simply curious about exploring movement in a holistic manner, this episode demands your attention. Join us now as we embark on a journey to deeply understand the profound impact Jozef Frucek and Fighting Monkey can have on your personal movement practice. Prepare yourself by lacing up your running shoes, grabbing your headphones, and diving into this transformative experience!

While he's been a member of the parkour community since 2004, Masa's movement journey has led him to become incredibly skilled in a wide variety of arts and disciplines, including ninjitsu, tumbling, and professional dance. He's also spent a lot of time training in the realm of movement culture, both with Ido Portal and our good friends over at Fighting Monkey. Born in Romania, Cluj-Napoca. I started my physical education at the age of 5, as a swimmer. Along the years I practiced various sports, focusing mainly on capoeira. My interest in arts was cultivated while studying music during my first 10 years of education. I studied medicine for 4 years. Afterwards I quit and decided to take education in my own hands. In present I am studying with Fighting Monkey, applying the principles and philosophy in my practice and in the way I move in the world. My plans for the future are to spread the love for movement and educate people towards a more artistic engagement with life and their practice.

Embodying Spontaneity: A Conversation With Jozef Frucek of Fighting Monkey   In conversation, I had the great pleasure of speaking with Jozef Frucek. He and Linda Kapetanea are the creators of Fighting Monkey, which is a beautiful system that weaves together movement, learning, communication, creativity, improvisation and a re-imagination of the process and experience of aging.    Jozef has studied deeply in Chinese medicine and martial arts along with having advanced degrees in voice and movement. He and Linda teach at Universities and dance and performance companies around the world.    I had followed Fighting Monkey for many years in the natural movement world, and was able take some classes with Jozef when they began teaching online during the pandemic. I was reminded of a line from one of our Feldenkrais teachers, Ruthy Alon, who coined the term “the grammar of spontaneity.” I find that Fighting Monkey helps to grow a grammar of spontaneous, natural, dynamic movement that weaves together essential principles from many movement traditions.     In our conversation, Jozef and I speak about how growing our spontaneity and creativity in movement increases our sense of creativity and spontaneity in how we live, how we think, how we speak, and express ourselves. We also discuss how essential new ways of thinking and participating in the world are, given the immense challenges we face in these times. We speak of the importance of systems based practice when it comes to movement and to life. We discuss the importance of play in learning, and how many adults forget how to learn and play as we age. We also look at the aging process, and how the manner in which we approach our movement shapes how we approach our aging process. Glenn runs Aspen Coaching with his wife Emma (@emma_louise_robson) and Paul Twyman (@pault8_upsidedown). Glenn has previously trained with the Ido Portal Method and is currently studying with Fighting Monkey. Part of the attraction of going deeper into a physical practice is the opportunity for self transformation. Glenn shares his story of how the practice has helped him realise self destructive behaviours and re-orient himself according to more truthful values. Apart from all the cool tricks and handstands you may see on Instagram, I think it is this element which keeps a lot of us in the game. We feel something, we search for a meaning, an understanding. We can sense that in our practice, we can uncover deep truths about ourself. In transforming ourselves, we can transform our world. Glenn openly shares his struggles and realisations through the years. Glenn sits at an intersection, having experience through many modern day phenomenons - crossfit, Ido, Fighting Monkey. How does this all come together in his teaching? Does he throw people into the fire? or does he step them through a more graduated process? We discuss some interesting case examples of how he applies the different methodologies. A great one from someone who has experience with it all, and is applying it to many different people. Many thanks to Glenn for jumping on.

I get to ask Jozef the question and many more. Jozef talks about energy in a way which is very unique - taking into account how it can change our behaviour and perception towards risk and appetite for transformation. We talk about many concepts including decision making, creativity and appreciating ourselves as complex systems. One of the pillars of the FM practice is communication, and it shows in how he can explain his ideas via personal stories, anecdotes and metaphors. It’s very entertaining and deep.I hope you guys enjoy this one as much as I did.Find them @fightingmonkey_rootlessroot or https://fightingmonkey.net

Dive in into the philosophy of Fighting Monkey, a movement practice revolutionizing the way we think about our place in space and in connection to fellow humans. Hear about the importance of moving beyond our predictable movements habits as well as the intersection between FM and the dismantling of systems of oppression in and outside of the movement world. Start asking questions about how the fitness industry keeps our bodies stuck in limiting beliefs about ourselves and our bodies' ability to navigate external pressures to find what FM refers to as 'earthquake architecture'. "Fighting Monkey is not an easy thing to do, not only for coordinations, but in general ... because you are confronting a lot of your patterns and blocks.""It's not a fight practice, It can seem like fighting, but actually it's about fighting your monkey mind.""It's a reclaiming of your physicality to harness those tools of resilience."Elke is a Mover. Today on the podcast - Emma (@emma_louise_robson), Glenn (@glennrobson_) and Paul (@pault8_upsidedown) - who run Aspen Coaching (@aspencoaching) - a movement gym in Perth.  Aspen’s motto is “Strength Through Diversity”. Their students, from all different backgrounds - from 16 years, to 80 years - all with different stories, contexts. The team places firm emphasis on celebrating the individual as their own journey - their’s no firm “Aspen method” which they have to go through. Rather it’s about providing the person with whatever tools the team have learnt from their backgrounds, to help that person with their own goals. There’s no pressure to commit to the handstand class, or the spinal wave class, or the particular strength class. There’s a freedom to their approach which is refreshing. The other aspect of this motto is to appreciate that everybody is different and even in disagreement, you can work together on a common goal. I think this is especially important, especially in today’s culture where it can be profitable and popular to form radical viewpoints and elicit controversy. In the end - aren’t we all just trying to help people? Check the space out at www.aspencoaching.com.au or @aspencoaching.

How do you teach movement to non-movement people? How do you make people “get it?” Just one of the questions we discuss at length in the latest episode of the Passive Hang! Allan (@trainawayyourpain) is a movement coach from Sydney, he operates out of the Jungle Brothers institution and also runs his own business, Train Away Your Pain. He has trained under the Ido Portal method and is currently studying the Fighting Monkey practice, and has a martial arts background. Allan used to be a financial advisor at one of the big banks, but made the switch into full time coaching. He shares the story of his transition - together with the struggles of using training as an escape to finding ways of explaining his knowledge to others. “Train Away Your Pain” tells his mission as it is, and it’s a reflection of Allan’s straight talking personality as he talks honestly about the realities of getting deep in the movement culture, devoting yourself to training, relating to non-movement people and also a rarely spoken about but extremely important item - sorting your finances. Allan is someone who has thought a lot about his purpose, the people he wants to help and how to communicate that to them. I think that’s really refreshing in a culture where “movement” struggles to find a definition and is for some, beyond definition. You can find him on Instagram at @trainawayourpain or www.trainawayyourpain.com

That allowed me to look from the outside and get a fresh look on why I think the best players are getting injured so much and what could be improved in their training. Diversity breeds immunity. Every great system also creates great deficiency.    Most people think strength is always the answer. But we believe there are many things that come before strength. We first work with coordination, then when we get more organized we find a rhythm. Then that rhythm leads us to more kinetic potential and kinetic potential leads to power exploration. Power exploration then leads us to strength training.   We want baseball players bodies to work in one rhythmic unit spending less energy on moving and putting more energy on where to react properly and making the right decisions.     My background is in art, and what is the most important thing in art? Staying creative. We need to always stay creative and find new alterations We all need to improve our training methods. We're kind of sleeping there because we have good training methods. What blocks us just being good to getting better? We need to be pushed to look past what is obvious. Check out all our podcasts at www.evolvemoveplay.com/evolve-move-play-podcast Jozef Frucek is of the most inspirational movement teachers I have encountered and Fighting Monkey is an incredible practice. He was on fire in this interview. We were all over the place with too many ideas thrown out to track completely. Fighting Monkey and Evolve Move Play are very similar conceptually and contain many similar elements, with the differences arising partially from our different movement backgrounds, as well as our personalities and philosophies. One of the key ideas in movement practice and indeed in life is the balance between form and formlessness. When we create order and structure we give ourselves a scaffolding to work from and a goal to work towards but we constrain our options, constrain what we can perceive, how we can act. Conversely, with formlessness the potential is limitless but direction is difficult. The biggest difference between FM and EMP seems to be in the balance found here. The Fighting Monkey practice leans towards formlessness, to the way of having no way, whereas EMP focuses more on trying to articulate an optimal structure. This theme I think runs through our whole conversation, while touching on many specific aspects of practice and movement philosophy. Specific topics covered include: 1. The balance between the movement practice and bringing in new elements 2. Jozef’s 40/60 rule 3. What is the right “why” for movement practice 4. Heroism and meaning 5. Effective and efficient practice vs. diversity and variability 6. How to develop creativity in movement practice 7. The Heroic archetype and The Iliad and Odyssey, balancing Achilles vs. Odysseus 8. Why you should listen to other people less and listen and to yourself more 9. How we need space and time to allow the development of a practice 10. Jozef’s teachers and background 11. The importance of rhythm; my approach to conceptualization of rhythm for parkour and Jozef’s ideas on how to develop rhythm 12. Why we need to start with improvising, with acting out the thing we want to do 13. Why you want to be a street rat not a lab mouse 14. Specialization vs. general movement practice 15. Longevity and motivation 16. Why the game is more important than the tricks 17. Key things to study to support your movement practice
