Over the last few weeks, I've found myself reminding others (and really, myself) that rest is indeed necessary to sustain our work. But what makes rest truly revolutionary? And does that revolutionary status change depending on who is resting?  I'll talk about all that, and more, in this episode. As mentioned, check out these readings to learn a bit more from those who have inspired me, including The Nap Ministry and Audre Lorde. And this incredible read  from Refinery29 writer Kathleen Newman-Bremang, which also helped inspire the thoughts I shared here. + a quick note for after the episode - I want to clarify that action can also be done in the form of active passive resistance, which from an outside view,  can also look like rest. These tactics are incredibly powerful, especially within BIPOC and Black communities whose bodies have been commodified for centuries, and shouldn't be discounted. Support the show

Two years into a pandemic that includes the bitter taste of racial inequities, reckonings and the brutalization of Black bodies, the pursuit of societally imposed standards of “excellence” is losing its appeal. Not only are Black women dropping out of the workforce in staggering numbers, many are asking themselves when does attempting to attain an ambiguous definition of exceptionalism become a descent into harm. In her latest article, editorial director and writer Kathleen Newman-Bremang challenges the notion and pursuit of Black exceptionalism as defined by society, and asks if embracing radical “mediocrity” is another way of reclaiming your power. In addition to the new YA film "After" (2019), our case study includes the mega-franchise “Fifty Shades of Grey” (2015) and one-note joke of a movie “Pride & Prejudice & Zombies” (2016). Plus, Kathleen Newman-Bremang (of Refinery29)breaks down why this genre so defined by sex isn't particularly sexy. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/theplaylist/message
