Jay Malinowski & Eon Sinclair, of Canadian alternative rock band, Bedouin Soundclash, join us on this episode of The Adamantium Podcast. Bedouin Soundclash are a household name in Canada, The UK and other parts of the world. But in the US, they are a lesser known group. They formed in 2000 in Ontario, Canada and scored the big hit "When The Night Feels My Song" in 2004. The song made it to Radio 1 in the UK and got airplay on The Edge radio show in Toronto. Not only did "When The Night" launch their career, the song developed a life of its own. It was everywhere. You could hear it in grocery stores, on TV ads and on kids shows. Years later, some Bedouin Soundclash fans were surprised to learn that this was one of their song since it was the soundtrack to their childhood. Bedouin took a hiatus for a decade, and returned in 2019 with the record Mass. But in 2022, they released their best record of their career (And one of the best ska albums of the 2022), We Will Meet In A Hurricane. We talk to Jay Malinowski and Eon Sinclair about this wonderful record and their interesting career. We also discuss the new albums' guest contributors: Aimee Interrupter (The Interrupters), Marcia Richards (The Skints), and Kathryn Calder (New Pornographers). The band talks about what it was like to open for No Doubt, Slightly Stoopid and to play the Vans Warped Tour twice. And they tell us some experiences of playing the Victoria Ska & Reggae Festival. We also talk bear sightings on their "Walk Through Fire" video shoot, working with Bad Brains' Darryl Jenifer on their early records, Jay's struggles with addiction, and what it was like for him to lose his voice at the Leeds Festival in 2006 and have the entire crowd sing for him. He is the co-founder of label and artist services company Pirates Blend, which has worked alongside Junia-T (who Dave has known since they were kids), A Tribe Called Red, Zaki Ibrahim, Saul Williams, Young Empires, and more. The label was co-founded with the members of Bedouin Soundclash, who Dave previously managed since they were all friends in university. Dave recalls chasing infamous artist manager Sol Guy to get his foot in the door and how that led him around the world at a young age tour managing for K’Naan and, as he says, the rest is history.

So we are taking a break from out 90's themed nonsense to look at some of the very best releases August has had to offer (and it is just a few!). Last week, I started out with a quick measles update saying that the outbreak has mostly subsided, but I want to reiterate how important it is to get yourself and any young children vaccinated before the next outbreak begins. Israel-based Ynetnews revealed this week that a 43-year-old flight attendant who had contracted measles while working on the New York to Tel Aviv route for Israeli airline El Al died this week after a long hospital stay. Rotem Amitai was a mother of three who fell ill and was admitted to a hospital in Israel, where there has been a serious ongoing measles outbreak. She had only received one dose of the measles vaccination and was therefore still susceptible to the disease. In the United States, one does of vaccine is usually administered when a child turns one year old and a second is administered before the child enters school, and in city data, 46 of the total 653 measles cases in this year's outbreak were children or adults who had only received one does of the vaccine. El Al Airlines now requires all flight attendants to be vaccinated against the disease, and it's believed that people flying home from overseas trips and returning to communities in Williamsburg and upstate in Rockland County were the initial sources of New York's current measles outbreaks. 16 years ago on August 14, 2003 — A cascading power outage plunges millions into darkness across the northeast — What began as a damaged power line and a software malfunction in Ohio led to overloaded equipment throughout the interconnected power system stretching from Canada into the northeast United States. The power surge from Ohio triggered safety systems across the region, creating what is thought to have been the most widespread outage in both United States and Canadian history and the second-most-widespread in the world. It took around two days for all overloaded components to be checked and brought back online, with some smaller areas remaining without power for nearly a week. In New York, the city and most of the state were in the dark. Traffic lights were out and elevators and the subway were stopped, leaving many commuters in need of emergency evacuation and with no way to reach their homes as night began to fall. Some stayed in office buildings, on the floors of generous co-workers who lived nearby, or even slept outside, while others attempted to walk home or catch a ride on a bus or taxi, turning Manhattan's bridges into one-way exits. Update: The suspect was taken into custody around 1am on August 17th — Police are still looking for a possible suspect in Friday morning's bomb scare where two empty rice cookers were left in the Fulton Street subway station downtown. The proximity of the station to many government offices and the sheer number of commuters that pass through the station during morning rush hour, the area was quickly evacuated and subway lines were disrupted beginning around 7:30am. Police found the large silver rice cookers to be empty and deemed the situation safe, but a third, identical rice cooker was then found next to a city trash can in Chelsea at Seventh and 16th. The rice cookers were empty, and they may have been intended as hoax devices to cause disruption. Police released stills from security camera footage showing a white man in his 20s or 30s with dark, curly hair and a distinctive tattoo on his outer forearm, and described him as a person of interest. After seeing the security camera footage, a West Virginia man identified the person as his son, who may have recently been pan-handling in the city. No further info has been released and the police are still searching for the suspect as of this recording. Although the incident brings to mind the Chelsea pressure-cooker bombing of 2016, there have also been recent scares from abandoned rice cookers, one found in a suitcase in Midtown at a 6 Train station in 2017 and another in an F Train station on the Lower East Side in 2018. 42 years ago on August 22, 1977 — 19-year-old Richard Rodriguez from Staten Island sets a Guinness World Record for longest rollercoaster ride on the Coney Island Cyclone — His record time was 104 hours and 2,350 rides during the 50th anniversary of both the coaster and Charles Lindbergh's transatlantic flight. Rodriguez would break the record once again 40 years later on a UK coaster with a time of over 405 hours! Here's Rodriguez interviewed in the 1978 film 'Coney Island Cyclone' by Mike Edwards. OMNY, the MTA's new fare-collecting system, sees 1 million uses in just over two months — The new MetroCard replacement is only available at 16 subway stations along the 4/5/6 and on Staten Island buses, but the tap-and-go system reached the 1 million target four times faster than the MTA has predicted. To use the system, you wave a credit or debit card or a cellphone or watch above the glowing panel. The system aims to reduce the waste and complexity of issuing disposable MetroCards since the contactless system uses your payment method directly, just like at a cash register, although there will be a refillable OMNY card once the system expands, and the MetroCard is still scheduled to be used through 2023. According to the MTA, 80% of the OMNY swipes have used mobile wallets where people have added their payment cards to their phone, since very few credit or debit cards have the built-in technology, which is different from the chips that are now seen on some cards. You may know Jay Malinonwski from the 2000s reggae-rock band Bedouin Soundclash. When that band took a hiatus, Jay took some time off. He started researching his family's past. This work led to his solo debut double-length nautical concept album “Martel.” When I hung out with Jay Malinowski at a Gastown coffeehouse, he had been holed up for weeks writing his book, “Skulls & Bones” (an illustrated novel and companion piece to Martel). This week on the TransCanada Music West podcast, it's Jay Malinowski and the Deadcoast live from Victoria's Alix Goolden Hall during Breakout West 2015. Jay Malinowski has earned a reputation as a young, commercially successful creative force. In his late teens, he fronted the JUNO Award winning reggae-rock outfit Bedouin Soundclash. The band recorded a plethora of pop gems, including “When The Night Feels My Song.”But in the decade since that breakthrough hit, Jay has continued to hone his craft. In 2010 he released his first solo album, Bright Lights and Bruises. That was followed by an EP collaboration with Coeur de Pirate, released under the moniker Armistice. Jay returned to his family’s home base of Vancouver in 2012, formed The Deadcoast (Elliott Vaugh on the Viola, John Kastelic on violin, and Martin Reisle on cello) and set to work on their first EP, Indian Summer. That record was followed up by the full length album, Martel. The concept album draws inspiration from the life of Malinowski’s ancestor Charles Martel – A mid-eighteenth century sailor who fled France for the New World…only to find himself fighting the French in the Siege of Louisbourg. Many of the songs you’ll hear on this week's show were featured on that record. Jay Malinowski rode to the top of the charts with Bedouin Soundclash. After a three year-long hiatus, the songwriter returns with a string quartet- based concept album around his seafaring ancestor Charles Martel.
We have a double dose of artist interviews in this week's show, as Mike speaks with Jacquie Neville of Toronto-based rock trio The Balconies. The band has spend the lion's share of the last year on the road and are currently crossing Canada and the US with a string of shows. Then, Andrew catches Jay Malinowski, frontman for the reggae rock trio Bedouin Soundclash, who's preparing for the release of the debut from Jay Malinowski & The Deadcost called "martel," based on the life of one of his actual ancestors. We'll also speak with Cristina Fernandes, the founder of Listen Harder, a publicity company based in Toronto that's propelled the careers of artists like The Lumineers, Tokyo Police Club, Monster Truck, City & Colour, and a long list of others. She'll talk about effective publicity campaigns, how to recognize the need for a pro PR campaign, and more.
Comedian/frontman/record label owner Joe Sib joins The Fort Podcast to talk about the art of whistling, couples fighting at Ikea, Santa Cruz, surf and skater culture, the Punk Rock scene, playing a show in front of Joey Ramone, hanging out with Johnny Ramone, playing a show in front of skinheads in San Fransico and the spirit of radio. Joe has been involved in the Punk Rock scene since he was 14 years old. Growing up in San Jose in the early 1980's, Sib was lucky to be a part of an early DIY scene that was home to great bands like The Faction, Los Olvidados, Social Unrest, Executioner, Crucifix, Code Of Honor and many more. He started his first band at 16 and went on his first tour at 18 opening for The Circle Jerks and 7Seconds. In 1990 Joe started a band called WAX and he spent 6 years touring and recording with them. Sib, along with partner Bill Armstrong, created SideOneDummy Records, home to such bands as: Flogging Molly, MXPX, The Suicide Machines, The Casualties, Go Betty Go, The Briggs, Bedouin Soundclash, The Dan Band, 7Seconds, Kill Your Idols and VCR. You can also hear Joe on his weekly FM radio show, "Complete Control Radio" on 98.7 FM in Los Angeles every Saturday night from 10 PM to 12 AM. Joe can be seen performing stand-up around the country and will be performing his one man show "California Calling" on May 25th at the Comedy Store main room in Hollywood California.
