I was the very first person to interview Miranda July about All Fours this time last year. To say she was nervous about how it would be received was an understatement. "Will you have my back?" she asked me (and the rest of the female world) towards the end of our conversation. Yes, I said, yes we will. And how! Since then All Fours has taken the world by storm - women over 40 have a sex life, who knew?! So I've decided to replay this episode for everyone who's new to The Shift and new to midlife. ------ Every so often you get the chance to interview someone whose work has fascinated you for, well, forever. And today is one of those days. Miranda July is an artist, performer, film maker and writer who has been doing it her own way since she was in her teens. She has made three films - The Future, Me and You and Everyone We Know and Kajillionaire, held countless exhibitions, written several books and won a bunch of awards. You get the picture. Now 50, Miranda has turned her attention to midlife with her first novel in a decade. All Fours is a painful, poignant, hilarious and extremely hot exploration of what happens when “a curious, creative, sexually active woman reaches the midpoint of her life, goes off the oestrogen cliff and starts to question her direction?” It is wholly unlike anything else I've read about this life stage. And is sure to change a few games. Miranda joined me to talk about her own trip off the oestrogen cliff, reimagining relationships as we get older, conscious co-parenting and moving into the house in the backyard. We also discussed the menopause whisper network, outing herself as “no longer young”, getting out of the anxiety cul de sac and why ageing is “unexpectedly wild”. * You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at The Shift bookshop on Bookshop.org, including All Fours by Miranda July and the book that inspired this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too, by me. * If you enjoyed this episode and you fancy buying me a coffee, pop over to my page on buymeacoffee.com. • And if you'd like to support the work that goes into making this podcast and get a weekly newsletter plus loads more content including exclusive transcripts of the podcast, why not join The Shift community, come and have a look around at www.theshiftwithsambaker.substack.com • The Shift (on life after 40) with Sam Baker is created and hosted by Sam Baker and edited by Emily Sandford. In Miranda July's new novel, “All Fours,” a 45-year-old artist embarks on a solo roadtrip to New York from her Los Angeles home. She makes it as far as Monrovia, a small town a half-hour from L.A., and waits out the rest of her trip in a motel room while pursuing an infatuation with a Hertz rental car employee. The novel, which shares similarities with July's own life, explores themes of marital ennui, the fear of sexual irrelevance and the contours of the female midlife crisis. July grew up in Oakland and is known for her performance art, her films “Me and You and Everyone We Know” and “Kajillionaire,” and her fiction “No One Belongs Here More Than You” and “The First Bad Man.” We listen back to our May conversation with July about her new novel and why she describes it as “closer to the bone.” Guests: Miranda July, actor, screenwriter, director and author - She's known for her films “Me and You and Everyone We Know” and “Kajillionaire,” and her fiction includes “No One Belongs Here More Than You” and “The First Bad Man”. You're planning a road trip — you've got snacks, you've got directions from Los Angeles to New York, and you've got a deep sense of curiosity and longing as the home you know fades quickly into your rearview mirror. For the forty-five year old artist at the heart of Miranda July's All Fours, the pull towards the unknown proves a little too tempting. She pulls off the highway a mere thirty minutes from home, but far enough away to dive headfirst into a journey of surprises, thrills, and the authentic absurdity of human connection. In her upcoming second novel, Miranda July spins her seasoned comedic skills with thoughtful nuance to craft an exploration of identity and desire in mid-life womanhood. What does our protagonist expect, and what is expected of her, and how much should she care about those expectations in the first place? All Fours is a quest for experiences as much as answers and July has plenty of pit stops planned for readers to stock up on discovery, sexy sparks, and personal reinvention. Miranda July is a director, filmmaker, artist, and author. Her works include the award-winning collection of short stories No One Belongs Here More Than You and New York Times bestselling novel The First Bad Man, as well as the films Me and You and Everyone We Know and Kajillionaire. Her writing has been featured in The Paris Review, Harper's, and the New Yorker. Laurie Frankel is the New York Times bestselling, award-winning author of five novels, including her new one, Family Family, as well as One Two Three and This Is How It Always Is. Her writing has also appeared in The New York Times, The Guardian, The Washington Post, Poets & Writers, Publisher's Weekly, and other publications. She is the recipient of the Washington State Book Award and the Endeavor Award. Buy the Book All Fours: A Novel Third Place Books
Author and creator Miranda July isn't bound by medium nor by expectations. From films like Me and You and Everyone We Know and Kajillionaire, to books like No One Belongs Here More Than You and The First Bad Man, to an iPhone app that reroutes text messages to strangers, July's powers of creativity and observation are wise, surprising, and always delightful. Her second novel, All Fours, is the story of a woman's artistic cross-country quest that has already won praise from George Saunders, Emma Cline, and Vogue for its intimacy, humor, and boundary defying freedom. On May 23, 2024, Miranda July came to the Sydney Goldstein Theater in San Francisco to be interviewed on stage by Anna Sale, host of the podcast Death, Sex & Money.

A Fresh Story, season 5, episode 7 We had the honor of talking to actress, artist, podcaster, and all around cool girl Rebecca Lee! We talked to Rebecca about her divorce, finding her way back to her career post-divorce, how we can tap into our confidence, and how she ditched the narratives in her life and found her own journey. Rebecca Lee is a Los Angeles-based actor and filmmaker. She studied acting at Atlantic Acting School in New York City as well as the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater in Los Angeles. We are 41 episodes in at Scene Stealers and at this rate we could be Kajillionaires. Or at least the movie we are talking about this week is Miranda July's 2020 independent film Kajillionaire. For The Vault Leo goes to deposit box 1993 to talk about the futuristic action flick Demolition Man and Charles gets a bit nutty with 1999's Girl, Interrupted. The Safe is Cracked and we are talking about Kajillionaire, Miranda July's dark comedy about a family of scammers and schemers doing anything to get a buck. It's odd and fascinating and it's a perfect fit for Scene Stealers!
On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got an actor-director you'll likely recognize along with the musician-slash-composer who made beautiful sounds for one of his films: Jesse Eisenberg and Emile Mosseri. Eisenberg is best known as an actor; he was nominated for an Academy Award for his portrayal of Mark Zuckerberg in The Social Network, which is just one of his dozens of credits. You've also seen him in Zombieland, The Squid and the Whale, the Now You See Me movies, and lots of indies. He also starred in the TV drama Fleishman is in Trouble last year alongside Claire Danes and Lizzy Caplan. And if that isn't enough, Eisenberg is also a writer, playwright, and director. His feature debut as a director came earlier this year with When You Finish Saving the World, which began life as Audible original—which he also wrote. The movie stars Julianne Moore and Stranger Things' Finn Wolfhard, and it was released by A24, a trademark of quality. And… segue time… music for the film was composed by today's other guest, Emile Mosseri. Now Mosseri spent years in bands, most notably The Dig, but really seems to have found his stride in recent years as a film composer. In 2020 he did the music for both Miranda July's Kajillionaire and for Lee Isaac Chung's Minari, for which Mosseri was Academy-nominated for Best Original Score. He's also worked on Joe Talbot's The Last Black Man in San Francisco and Jonah Hill's Stutz, which you'll hear a little about in this conversation. Earlier this year, Mosseri released his first album of original songs under his own name, which is called Heaven Hunters. It's a really personal, intimate record that sounds best on a pair of quality headphones, as it's sort of cinematic and somehow also small and quiet. Check out one of Eisenberg's favorite songs from Heaven Hunters, this is “My Greedy Heart.” These two get right into a great chat, talking about the various neuroses that fuel their art and stifle their ambition: Mosseri even talks about choosing whether to spend money on his therapist or an awards-season publicist. Eisenberg talks about his experiments using AI on a script—they don't go well—which leads to a discussion about whether AI will impinge on creative jobs like theirs in the future. It's a great, fun chat—enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Jesse Eisenberg and Emile Mosseri for chatting. If you liked what you hear, please follow Talkhouse on your favorite podcasting platform, and check out all the great written pieces at Talkhouse.com. This episode was produced by Myron Kaplan, and the Talkhouse theme is composed and performed by the Range. See you next time!
MEET OUR MAKER IS NOW ON PATREON! Go to patreon.com/meetourmakers to pledge and become a patron today. You'll get access to fun stuff, including exclusive moments from interviews and the chance to submit questions for future guests. Woo! In this chat, we get to meet Oscar-nominated composer Emile Mosseri. Though best known for his film work, Emile is also a singer-songwriter, and has been for much of his life. He was in a band called The Dig for years prior to his career as a composer, and now he's just put out his debut full-length studio record, Heaven Hunters. Here, Emile and I talk quite a bit about this record - what it means to him, how he got here, and what led him to feeling comfortable and ready to release such bluntly personal songs. We do also touch on his film work, some of his specific scores for films like Kajillionaire and his Academy Award-nominated work on Minari, his love of film music, and more. Thank you for listening and I hope you enjoy.
Today on Too Opinionated, we sit down with actress Susan Berger! One of her most memorable experiences was being cast in Joel Coen's The Tragedy of Macbeth. The film shot during Covid. And everyone involved was grateful to be a part of a truly magical experience. Susan's other films include Kajillionaire, Looks to Kill, The Dollar King, and the upcoming The Legacy of Cloudy Falls. Susan can be seen on Jury Duty on Amazon's Freevee, playing Barbara Goldstein. Jury Duty was a truly breath-taking experience, as all of the dialog was improvised around a set of premises that the cast were never sure would actually happen the way the writers and producers imagined them. The fact that that it came out so well is a tribute to production team's editing skills. Other TV appearances include roles in American Horror Story, Baskets, Mom, Criminal Minds, Bob Hearts Abishola, and Hunters. After studying improv and musical improv at UCB, Susan and her son Christopher Corbin formed a two-person improv group. Son of a Mother. Want to watch: YouTube: Meisterkhan Pod (Please Subscribe)
Composer Emile Mosseri is known for his moving scores for the films The Last Black Man in San Francisco, Kajillionaire, and Minari, for which he earned an Oscar nomination. But before he was a film composer, he was a member of the touring and recording band, The Dig. Now he's released his debut solo album as a performer, titled Heaven Hunters. Mosseri joins us for a Listening Party.
Miranda July is known to weird out, to stretch what we call normalcy. I feel like she is David Lynch's daughter. She'd be the comedy version of him. Anyways, Mildred Fernandez and I reviewed "Kajillionaire" about Old Dolio who never had a chance in life. I mean, her name says it all. All she wants is someone to meet her beyond what is just equal. We want to feel special. July created a film where it's screaming that without having to hear it. We see the events that unfold where a human progresses dramatically as the film goes on. This film is about being accepted, the importance of nuture and most importantly, always keep your ears on the ground because it be the closest ones out to get you. We dug the film for it's screenplay, the scenes that express the challenges the caharacters have to deal with as the film goes on, it solely pushes the story, and we also like how the film addresses traumas that are passed down and they shape people. I personally give this filmFour tokes out of FourMildred Fernandezhttp://instagram.com/tender_claws

Deep Cut returns to regularly scheduled programming with the decidedly irregular films of American independent director/writer/actor/multi-hyphenate Miranda July. You might even call them quirky. We begin our series by learning about her long list of artistic endeavours and discuss the connotations of "quirk" in the context of July's films before diving in to her most recent and most critically acclaimed work yet: Kajillionaire. Ben highlights Evan Rachel Wood's physically specific performance as "Old Dolio", Wilson celebrates Emile Mossieri's emotionally vibrant soundtrack to July's little "heist of the heart," while Eli tries his best to understand what makes the movie so special to his fellow co-hosts. ¿A qué...?

This week I finally wrap up my chronological system for picking movies from my watchlist! And I think this is the most 5 star movies we've had in a single week so far! I'm not gonna check if that's actually true or not! This week's movies: The Parking Lot Movie (2010) All Star Superman (2011) Drug War (2012) Inside Llewyn Davis (2013) Big Hero 6 (2014) Spotlight (2015) Buddymoon (2016) Good Time (2017) Annihilation (2018) Parasite (2019) Kajillionaire (2020) Nobody (2021)
On this week's installment of Sunny and Renaissance's regularly scheduled three part podcast of a submitted hot take, joint media consumption, and personalized recommendations for each other, your favorite lesbian communists exhibit their bimboism in regards to professional sports but ultimately comes to the conclusion that like capitalism, they must be abolished! Thank you to @scissorclown on Twitter for this scathing hot take. Then we rant and scream and cry and yell and stomp over the absolute wildness that is the 2020 indie drama Kajillionaire directed by Miranda July, whom we definitely think is a genius. This unconventional heist movie about family, money, survival, love, intimacy, emotional neglect, queerness and mentally ill lesbians with mommy issues....! Yeah we are a bit blown away. Finally, Sunny recommends the novel Pizza Girl by Jean Kyoung-Frazier in how it has the same weirdly hyper specific scenario x brilliant queer energy of Kajillionaire, and Renaissance recommends the campy 2004 movie D.E.B.S. directed by Angela Robinson (the director of Renaissance's favorite movie, Professor Marsten and the Wonder Woman).Find us on Twitter @thelavenderpod and email us your hot take(s) to get featured on future episodes thelavendermenacepodcast@gmail.com! Esta semana recomiendo en Netflix, The Rider de Chloe Zhao (la película previa de la directora ganadora del Oscar por Nomadland) y Cómo se convirtieron en tiranos, narrada por Peter Dinklage. En Amazon Prime Video vale la pena volver a visitar Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. We spend another weekend out of town. This time we take a spa day in Safety Harbor, Florida. During this day of relaxing, he had two movies from the night before to discuss - CRUELLA (2021) and KAJILLIONAIRE (2020). Our conversation within this episode is split into two sections. During the first half, we are poolside at the Safety Harbor Resort and Spa as we discuss Disney's Cruella. Following the setting of the sun, we relocate to Troubled Waters Brewing to finish out conversation about the film Kajillionaire. Damn, Homedance! Back at it again with the killer shows! We talk about the heartfelt quirkiness of Kajillionaire and Anne Hathaway's performance in the underrated Colossal. Plus, the wild and crazy times of Traction Park--oops, we mean, Action Park. We even tell some full throttle stories from our own pasts. Hey, we live our lives one quarter mile at a time...
We may be making a huge mistake by not "picking a lane" for our podcast. One week we have a baseball coach, the next week a published true crime writer... sometimes it is just Lisa and I shooting the breeze with our good friend Aaron. This week, we decided to use our forum for a movie reviews. When talking about which films to break down, we decided on the three films we actually risked our lives to see during the pandemic. We LOVE going to the movies and are really excited to be able to hit the theatres again without restrictions, but in the cases of "Kajillionaire", "A Promising Young Woman" and "Nobody" we can honestly say helped keep popcorn popping at some of our local haunts, at least in some small way. We came away with positive impressions of all three films, but you will see how they rank as you listen to this episode. New year, same vocal fry! Sara and Hannah talk about Miranda July's 2020 film "Kajillionaire," then do a quick roundup of miscellaneous TV shows.
the boys ramble about Kajillionaire and they spoil the movie so watch the movie before you listen to this.
What a week, right? Could anyone use a little reprieve from the chaos and insanity swirling around us? Well, I've got you covered, baby! I had a delightful conversation with comedian/composer Matt Buechele about his love for South Park: Bigger, Longer And Uncut, the notorious 1999 full length feature film version of Comedy Central's South Park. Matt and I show appreciation for the South Park team's reverence for musical theater conventions and laugh at the outrageous filthiness of the boundary pushing classic. We kick off the big 7-0 First, it's the return of "Aaron Sorkin The Writer" being led by "Aaron Sorkin The Director" with the new Netflix Original, THE TRIAL OF THE CHICAGO 7. The cast of names is too long to fit into this text field. The second new film of the week is the third feature from the singular Miranda July. It's called KAJILLIONAIRE, and it features Evan Rachel Wood, Richard Jenkins, Debra Winger and Gina Rodriguez. There's plenty to talk about here. Finishing the trio of new releases is Garrett Bradley's emotionally striking documentary, TIME. We'll break down our thoughts. For the THROWBACK CHALLENGE, we respond to another listener-commissioned request and tackle the 1990 "Anarchist Ferris Bueller" (?) flick, PUMP UP THE VOLUME. Thanks, Dick Carr. Thank you. We've famined, and now we're feasting. Cheers! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/the-film-harmonic/support
