Kelley Baker AKA The Angry Filmmaker is an author, filmmaker, and music aficionado. Whenever we get together, we're always talking about music and music documentaries, and two films we can't stop talking about are Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage and Muscle Shoals. As we discuss this double feature, we touch on themes of history and mythology in the music business, curiosity and dissatisfaction, the pursuit of greatness, and how tragedy and rejection shape people. Weaving stories and memories from both films and our lives, Kelley and I talk about how these films reveal necessary traits that all artists need in pursuing their work: upping your game by working on your craft, surrounding yourself with people, and going down your own path.
How do you know you're getting the real story when you go someplace new? If you're a documentarian, how do you tap into the reality that stories are everywhere, as long as you have the key, the very object that provides access to the storytellers? In Searching for the Wrong-Eyed Jesus, directed by Andrew Douglas, the South came alive with a 1970 Chevrolet Impala. Kelley brought this film to my attention as an example of a movie that immediately makes you question, "What the hell is going on here?" It messes with the documentary form, makes you work to understand the underlying meaning, let alone who the people in the film are, and speeds beyond stereotypes. Ultimately, it is a film that many people will not like, will struggle to even see because of its limited availability, but should experience. If you need a shot of artistic courage, this film represents the guts required to make a film the way the director wants to.
Kelley Baker and I are kicking off this season in style with a lively chat about his independent filmmaking and writing journey from film school, working in the sound department, and directing shorts and features in Portland, Oregon to writing books and short stories. We talk about why living life is so important for artists, what makes a memorable story, what he looks for and what turns him off in movies, why book-to-film adaptations often fail to measure up to his imagination, and why you should always help your friends out on their creative journey. Sprinkled throughout is his approach to both filmmaking and writing books: do whatever you need to do to tell your stories.

Well known as writer of The Angry Filmmaker Survival Guides, Kelley has also directed various short and feature films. He has an extensive career working in sound design on films such as Good Will Hunting and Far From Heaven. In the late 90's Kelley would make his first feature film, Birddog, putting it all on the line to see his project through. In the interview, he talks with Poxy and Ragan about his early days as a father and filmmaker, the transition to Hollywood, and his career as an author, all of which would help make Kelley Baker who he is today, and that's The Angry Filmmaker.Support the show (https://interland3.donorperfect.net/weblink/WebLink.aspx?name=E9988&id=1)

I'm so excited for this week's episode because I had the opportunity to interview a brilliant and knowledgeable gal that I've known in the online space for over a year now. Scout Sobel is the founder of Scout's Agency, and they've been the source of many of the amazing guests you've heard on my show. Scout has a long journey with mental health, and I'm so thankful that she's talking about the mental aspects of entrepreneurship and tips for self care. You can check out her new book here! 083: The Emotional Entrepreneur with Scout Sobel Here's what we chat about in this episode: Scout's journey of managing her bipolar disorder - medication, daily healing practices, mindset shifts, holistic healing measures, and mental health tools How to feel safe in your emotions so that you can have a purposeful, meaningful, and fulfilling relationship with your life Business:How to emotionally handle entrepreneurship - the mindset, perspective shifts, and roller coaster reality that comes with being an entrepreneur Why and how every entrepreneur should be prioritizing their mental health The secrets behind Scout's Agency: crafting an engaging pitch letter, the art of cold emailing, and scoring high profile clients and so much more. Here's a little bit more about Scout Sobel: Scout experienced her first depressive episode at the age of 14 and was formally diagnosed with bipolar disorder at the age of 20. Living with a mental illness brought an onslaught of symptoms: anxiety, hypomania, depression, catatonia, psychosis, and suicidal ideation. Her perception of her life weighed down on her so poignantly that she dropped out of college, could not hold a job or internship, was hospitalized, experimented with medleys of prescription medication, and went through two outpatient programs. One day her husband (then boyfriend) looked at her lovingly and said, “I don't care if you're depressed. If you are depressed and hopeful, I can be in this relationship. If you are depressed and hopeless, I can't do this with you.” That was the moment her life changed. She started infusing her life with hope and began to take radical responsibility for her emotional state. And after intense self-development work - support groups, holistic healing modalities, prayer, routines, and physical wellness, she found entrepreneurship. Through entrepreneurship, she learned to unconditionally love her life through the pain, challenges, and celebrations. She learned that she wanted to be here. Today, Scout is the Founder and CEO of Scout's Agency, a female-focused PR agency that specializes in getting women as guests on podcasts. Over the last two years, the agency has served women like Catt Sadler, Kelley Baker, Jessica Zweig, Damona Hoffman, Lauren McGoodwin, Bala, Kelley Baker, and Rebecca Minkoff. Scout led the agency to a six figure revenue in its first year (2019) with a 250% growth in 2020. She is also the co-host of Okay Sis, a top-charted podcast most recently highlighted in Apple's New & Noteworthy collection, with her sister Mady where she openly documents her experience living with bipolar disorder. And now that she has gotten to a place where she feels safe in her emotions and is not able to only function in society but thrive as an entrepreneur, she is putting all of her emotional tools, learnings, and wisdom into her debut book, The Emotional Entrepreneur, a 25 lesson emotional guidebook for women who want to pursue a life of purpose. These are the personal development tools she has garnered up to manage her mental illness but what surprised her the most is that she realized her mental health tools also became her superpower in business. Today I'm chatting with Scout Sobel who has been living with a severe case of bipolar disorder for 15 years, yet unapologetically owns her mental health diagnosis. Scout was once unable to hold a job, go to college, or function in today's society, but through a lot of self-development work Scout manages her bipolar disorder successfully, even calling her diagnosis the best thing that has ever happened to her because it empowers her to live life in alignment with her soul. The question at the heart of this conversation was inspired by a moment of brutal truth on a recent job: How does filmmaking change as you get older? As I scrambled to the top of a semi to get the shot, I stood there and thought, “I'm not getting any younger. One day, I won't be able to do this.” I reached out to two filmmakers I madly respect, Beth Harrington and the Angry Filmmaker, Kelley Baker. We had a fun and engaging conversation about the changing nature of filmmaking as you get older. With over 40 years each into their careers, both continually move forward into the future, telling stories that matter to them, building supportive communities, remaining fiercely independent, and realizing that they are in this pursuit for life.
