Summer shares a recurring childhood dream about trying to escape boulders rolling down a mountain at her and Katherine shares her recent recurring theme of ukulele dreams. She shares stories about growing up in Santa Cruz and about being a prolific day dreamer and what those day dreams meant to her. In this episode I brought on the person that's the go to expert for being able to grow visibility and presence online, specifically using podcasts, Scout Sobel. Scout is a trailblazer in the media industry for utilizing Podcast Tours™ as a powerful form of PR. She founded Scout's Agency in February of 2019 after recognizing the power of podcasting as a long-form, intimate medium for founders to tell their stories and expand their businesses. Over the past four years, Scout's Agency has grown 600%, booked their clients on over 2500 podcast episodes, cultivated a database of over 5,000 podcasts, and has run over 150 Podcast Tours™ under Scout's leadership. In addition to running Podcast Tours™ for female entrepreneurs, Scout's Agency just launched The Podcast Tour Academy, a 6-week live course that trains entrepreneurs and solopreneurs on how to run their own Podcast Tour and get themselves as a guest on podcasts so that they too can go from the unseen entrepreneur to the visible visionary. On a perpetual Podcast Tour herself, Scout talks openly about her entrepreneurship journey on The Emotional Entrepreneur Podcast and in her bestselling book, The Emotional Entrepreneur. We talk about the power of podcasting for growing visibility, connecting with hosts and audiences, and the value of podcasting and the value of smaller podcasts. Overall, the episode highlights the importance of intention, patience, and trust in the process of podcasting and entrepreneurship. In this episode of the Skeptical Shaman, host Rachel White chats with "The Emotional Entrepreneur": Scout Sobel. Not only is this the title of Scout's book, but it's also her life's mission statement. As the owner of Scout's Agency and the cohost of the "Okay, Sis" podcast, Scout is upending every pre-conceived "rule" of what it means to be a woman, a mother, and a business owner, harnessing the power of her emotions and intuitions instead of fighting them at every step.Scout's Agency has a simple but powerful mission: to get women as guests on podcasts, and through delivering this incredible product Scout has absolutely gained invaluable lessons learned across business, personal development, and spirituality more broadly. In this chat, Rachel and Scout dig into the crucial importance of the chakras, how to radically accept your nature and your soul's purpose, and how to navigate the "shadow aspect" of your incredible super powers...you know, because we all have them!Scout credits her bipolar disorder with many of her own superpowers, market differentiators and--frankly speaking-- her competitive edge, but also acknowledges that "with great power comes great responsibility". Scout shares her own best practices for self-care, how to manage the instinct to "fawn" in a society obsessed with customer service, and what she needs to fill her tank up after an exhausting workday. We end our discussion with Rachel pulling a TOTEM Tarot Card for Scout, who reflected a totally awesome, totally curious open mind when faced with an often misunderstood mythical character!TOTEM Readings website (Rachel's spiritual practice): https://www.totemreadings.comTOTEM Tarot Deck (deck used in episode): https://www.amazon.com/dp/0578980126?ref=myi_title_dpTOTEM Readings Substack: https://totemrach.substack.comScout's Agency website: https://www.scoutsobel.comScout's IG: https://www.instagram.com/scoutsobel/Please note: The views and opinions expressed on The Skeptical Shaman do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of the podcast. “Our minds will keep us in our comfort zone, no matter how painful that is, because the unknown is so scary and so difficult to conceptualize for all of us,” explains Scout Sobel, founder of Scout's Agency and author of The Emotional Entrepreneur, a guidebook for navigating the emotional challenges of launching, running, and scaling a business. In today's episode, host Christi Lukasiak is joined in conversation with Scout Sobel to talk about the intersection of mental health and entrepreneurship. Scout talks openly about being diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder and how it influenced the course of her life. She shares that until she took radical responsibility for her own life and realized she did have agency over how she was reacting to her depression, she remained stuck in a cycle of victimhood. Scout saw that she was choosing to stay in her depressive episodes, because it was more familiar and comfortable than trying something new. She started taking full responsibility for her life by taking advantage of every self help book, support group, and program she could. Once Scout got into the world of entrepreneurship, she realized that the largest threat to the success of her business was her emotions. This inspired her to write a book of lessons that would guide other women with similar struggles through the emotional roadblocks of starting and running a business. Tune into this week's episode of Christi's Couch for a conversation about mental illness and entrepreneurship. Learn how the dominant narrative in mental health keeps people stuck in a cycle of victimization and how to navigate the anxiety of taking radical responsibility for your life. Quotes “Our minds will keep us in our comfort zone, no matter how painful that is, because the unknown is so scary and so difficult to conceptualize for all of us.” (40:49-41:00 | Scout) “The narrative that this is out of your control is a highly disempowering narrative that keeps you in the victimhood. It keeps you helpless, it keeps you not inspired to take action.” (43:59-44:09 | Scout) “You do have agency over your life. You do have power over your life. And you don't have to be afraid of yourself.” (44:32-44:38 | Scout) “Whenever I get to a point where I think that I'm hopeless, and there's no beauty in the world, I know that my depression is lying to me and I'm temporarily unable to see beauty.” (47:52-48:01 | Scout) “I saw so many women my age who had the financial means. Who had the resources, the education, who could start businesses at this snap of their fingers, and they weren't doing it not because they didn't have all that, but because they were afraid. And I said, Whoa, this game is so much more emotional than anybody's giving it credit.” (53:03-53:22 | Scout) “You've survived every second of that emotion because you're still listening to me talking, which means you're still surviving. And if you've survived it before, it means you can survive it again and again and again.” (58:39-58:50 | Scout) Links Follow Scout on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/scoutsobel/ Grab a copy of Scout's book here: https://www.amazon.com/dp/0578951754 FOLLOW ME ON INSTAGRAM CHECK OUT MY TIK TOK WATCH MY LATEST YOUTUBE VIDEO If you've benefited from this episode be sure to tag me @christilukasiak on Instagram and share this episode with your community to spread the word! Today I sit down with my dear friend Scout Sobel, the multi faceted, inspirational founder of Scout's Agency, the best selling author of the Emotional Entrepreneur and the host of the Emotional Entrepreneur podcast and cohost of Okay Sis podcast with her sister Mady. I mean this resume! We get candid on all things mental health and how her bipolar disorder changed her life in the best way, led her to the career path she's on today and to living a life of abundance, support and alignment. Her book, the Emotional Entrepreneur is the handbook for entrepreneur's everywhere who are not willing to sacrifice themselves and their mental health and the quotes at the beginning of each section are my fave and I have learned so many lessons about myself from reading. She shares her crazy writing process and the story of how this book came about which I loved! 10/10 recommend you check it out alongside her two podcasts. A common theme on this podcast is nonlinear paths and Scout's story is the definition of that. I hope this encourages you to go on a journey of self discovery, recovery, healing, growth and self love. The opportunities that will come your way once you begin to do the work and live in abundance will blow you away in the absolute best way. During this time of questioning everything, it's time to ask better questions of yourself. Instead of the tired advice, to start with WHY - I believe it's more impactful to start with WHAT. I believe starting with what, rather than starting with why is the key to self-liberation and manifesting the life of your dreams. I spoke about it during my recent Ted Talk here. Today, I bring you a portion of my conversation with my beautiful, expansive friend Scout Sobel from her podcast the Emotional Entrepreneur which you can listen to here. THE EMOTIONAL ENTREPRENEUR with SCOUT SOBEL “I don't control my bipolar disorder. I live in a dance with it. I accept that… I always say pain alchemized into gold.” “Live in uncertainty's discomfort. There you will find all future abundance.” – Entrepreneur Scout Sobel Episode Summary: How do you control the most negative aspects of your personality? Of your life? How do you manage emotional turmoil, or maybe a negative thought running on a loop? In this episode, we talk with Scout Sobel, founder of Scouts Agency, a PR agency that gets women as guests on podcasts. Scout's agency had six figure revenue the first year, grew by 250% the next and grew 60% this year. Scout is cohost of the popular, Okay Sis podcast which spotlights female guests and focuses on telling women's stores. Through Okay, Sis, Scout fell in love with spreading women's stories and identified the rising popularity and influence of podcasts. She is a trailblazer in the media industry for using podcasts as a powerful form of PR for women, entrepreneurs, podcasters and brands. She now hosts The Emotional Entrepreneur podcast. Scout's success did not come without trials and tribulations. For 15 years she has been living with a severe case of bipolar disorder. Once unable to hold a job, go to college or function in society -- with a lot of self-development work, through a harrowing emotional journey with psychosis, depression, anxiety, and self-harm -- Scout turned her life around. Listen in to this inspirational conversation to understand how Scout took radical responsibility for her mental health and now successfully manages her bipolar disorder and uses her mental health strength to fuel her entrepreneurial dreams. Topics We Discuss: [8:50] A key to feeling safe in your emotions is giving yourself time to heal. Change takes time. A long time. [11:39] Building a toolbox to help regulate your emotions: therapy, psychiatry, yoga, meditation, support groups… [12:50] What it means to be an Emotional Entrepreneur. [14:00] Finding a framework that suits your soul, your potential, passion and purpose. [16:00] Incorporating spirituality and prayer into an emotional journey. [18:30] When Scout calls on her higher power, she feels safe enough to be strong and secure. [19:42] Why Scout says, “Live in uncertainty's discomfort. There you will find all future abundance.” Especially for women. Because life is uncertain. [22:35] Setting a higher standard for yourself. Walk before you run. If you are emotionally weighed down and lost, setting a higher standard means tomorrow you're going to wake up and add in hope. Baby steps. [24:05] Where Scout finds hope. No intellectualizing, don't look for evidence. Just trust. Find something that sounds better than where you are today and hope for that. [26:30] How do you know the Universe is showing you your path? How to open our eyes so we can follow the breadcrumbs. [30:57] Why resting is as productive as healing. Filling our free time with what nourishes and restores: a bath, meditation, journaling, putting the phone away and reading a book, cooking with your own two hands, getting outside. NOT frying our nervous system with stimulation, stimulation, stimulation. [35:09] Scout's first transformative spiritual experience -- where she felt in complete flow with the spiritual realm. Its easy to assume that because you are an introvert, that you are not going to feel comfortable showing up online. I hear that all the time. That is why this conversation needed to happen, because that is just a misconception. Being introverted and being fearful of showing up online is indeed two different things. Your fear of showing up online stems from a deeper rooted fear. It could be a fear of: Failure Being embarrassed Other people's opinions People not relating Whatever that fear is, THAT is what is holding you back from showing up online. Not from being introverted. Guess what - When I started doing FB lives, I would sweat through my shirt I was so nervous. Every time I do something new, I will sweat right through my shirt. You need to get uncomfortable to learn how to be comfortable with doing something new. You need to work through that fear and anxiety around the challenge that you face, or the challenge will win. Scout Sobel & I are chatting today about this major misconception - both as introverts who indeed are very much online. Having been diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder Type 2 at the age of 20, Scout Sobel dropped out of college, couldn't keep a job, and struggled to function as a part of society. It wasn't until she found entrepreneurship a few years later that she found a purpose and a drive to be productive, creative, and take control of her life. Most of all, she's an advocate for people, especially women, to persevere in building the business of their wildest dreams, despite the hardships, challenges, or mental illness they experience. I'm so excited for this week's episode because I had the opportunity to interview a brilliant and knowledgeable gal that I've known in the online space for over a year now. Scout Sobel is the founder of Scout's Agency, and they've been the source of many of the amazing guests you've heard on my show. Scout has a long journey with mental health, and I'm so thankful that she's talking about the mental aspects of entrepreneurship and tips for self care. You can check out her new book here! 083: The Emotional Entrepreneur with Scout Sobel Here's what we chat about in this episode: Scout's journey of managing her bipolar disorder - medication, daily healing practices, mindset shifts, holistic healing measures, and mental health tools How to feel safe in your emotions so that you can have a purposeful, meaningful, and fulfilling relationship with your life Business:How to emotionally handle entrepreneurship - the mindset, perspective shifts, and roller coaster reality that comes with being an entrepreneur Why and how every entrepreneur should be prioritizing their mental health The secrets behind Scout's Agency: crafting an engaging pitch letter, the art of cold emailing, and scoring high profile clients and so much more. Here's a little bit more about Scout Sobel: Scout experienced her first depressive episode at the age of 14 and was formally diagnosed with bipolar disorder at the age of 20. Living with a mental illness brought an onslaught of symptoms: anxiety, hypomania, depression, catatonia, psychosis, and suicidal ideation. Her perception of her life weighed down on her so poignantly that she dropped out of college, could not hold a job or internship, was hospitalized, experimented with medleys of prescription medication, and went through two outpatient programs. One day her husband (then boyfriend) looked at her lovingly and said, “I don't care if you're depressed. If you are depressed and hopeful, I can be in this relationship. If you are depressed and hopeless, I can't do this with you.” That was the moment her life changed. She started infusing her life with hope and began to take radical responsibility for her emotional state. And after intense self-development work - support groups, holistic healing modalities, prayer, routines, and physical wellness, she found entrepreneurship. Through entrepreneurship, she learned to unconditionally love her life through the pain, challenges, and celebrations. She learned that she wanted to be here. Today, Scout is the Founder and CEO of Scout's Agency, a female-focused PR agency that specializes in getting women as guests on podcasts. Over the last two years, the agency has served women like Catt Sadler, Kelley Baker, Jessica Zweig, Damona Hoffman, Lauren McGoodwin, Bala, Kelley Baker, and Rebecca Minkoff. Scout led the agency to a six figure revenue in its first year (2019) with a 250% growth in 2020. She is also the co-host of Okay Sis, a top-charted podcast most recently highlighted in Apple's New & Noteworthy collection, with her sister Mady where she openly documents her experience living with bipolar disorder. And now that she has gotten to a place where she feels safe in her emotions and is not able to only function in society but thrive as an entrepreneur, she is putting all of her emotional tools, learnings, and wisdom into her debut book, The Emotional Entrepreneur, a 25 lesson emotional guidebook for women who want to pursue a life of purpose. These are the personal development tools she has garnered up to manage her mental illness but what surprised her the most is that she realized her mental health tools also became her superpower in business. “Entrepreneurship and starting your own business is just one big personal development game.” Scout Sobel is a trailblazer in the media industry. She is the founder of Scout's Agency, the co-host of Okay Sis Podcast, and the host of SCOUT Podcast. But growing up, she suffered from emotional paralysis, experiencing her first bout of anxiety in kindergarten. A depressive episode in high school led to therapy intervention, followed by paranoia in college. When she was eventually diagnosed with bipolar disorder at the age of 20, Scout thought her life was over. She painfully watched friends succeed while she failed to hold down part-time jobs as a college drop-out. It wasn't until faced with losing her boyfriend that she started taking responsibility for the cards she was dealt instead of blaming God for giving them to her. She sought out resources for her mental illness, got a job and took community college classes. Her brain kicked into high gear when she started a magazine with a friend… leading her down the path of entrepreneurship. Listen in as Scout vulnerably shares how accepting, allowing and honoring her emotions has been critical to her success as an entrepreneur and as a human. Her first book, “Emotional Entrepreneur,” guides women through the emotional challenges of launching, running, and scaling a business. “I've made a contract with myself that no matter what happens or what emotion happens in that moment, I will love my life unconditionally.” --Scout Sobel Grab a copy of her book here: https://www.amazon.com/dp/0578951754. Scout experienced her first depressive episode at the age of 14 and was formally diagnosed with bipolar disorder at the age of 20.
