Kelley's known as the Angry Filmmaker. He's pissed because he's passionate. He knows the value of stories. The value of putting the important things first. And that's why he's such a fantastic filmmaker and sound designer. As he signed the book he so graciously sent me, “Remember: the only people who really care about sound are the audience.” We dug into ADR (Automated Dialogue Replacement) in film and how that can kill emotion. About how technical skills are only there to pave way for the emotional. And about caring about the right things and speaking up for yourself. Sound designing is the art of world building. So step into Kelley's world for a moment, and come out the other end loving music more. (The book he sent was The Angry Filmmaker Survival Guide Part 2: Sound Conversations With (un)Sound People. Kicking of 2025 with one of my favorite humans in Hollywood, Lynnette Ramirez. A friend and mentor, she is also a powerhouse producer, development executive, and champion of underrepresented voices. Lynnette graduated from LMU's screenwriting undergrad program and began her career in development at Sean Connery's Fountainbridge Films, working on films such as “Entrapment” and “Finding Forrester”. In 2002, she launched a production company named Vida Films that produced two independent features: “The Blue Hour” starring Alyssa Milano and “2 Days” starring Paul Rudd and Adam Scott. In 2007, Lynnette became SVP of Development and Production for George Lopez Presents housed at Warner Bros. During her tenure, she produced several projects including the Nickelodeon hit original movie “Mr. Troop Mom”. She is currently the President of Bassett Vance Productions, where Lynnette isn't just creating content - she's creating opportunities. She's also a writer, having sold romantic comedy screenplays to Walt Disney and Lionsgate Studios. From her roots as an independent filmmaker to her current role nurturing women and BIPOC voices, Lynnette is not just breaking barriers, but demolishing them completely! xx

It's finally time for our long-awaited deep dive into New Mormon History. Put simply, NMH was a movement within the history department of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to confront controversial history and turn away from the apologetic and polemical Old Mormon History. The leading figure, Leonard Arrington, was the right person for the job. But, he didn't have the business chops to fight forces much larger than him in the form of Mark E. Petersen, Ezra Taft Benson, and Boyd K. Packer. The main segment is long as we chronicle the rise, fall, and resurrection of the New Mormon History movement and how the Joseph Smith Papers Project, as well as Saints: The Standard of Truth, are both the results of this movement pushing the church for academic legitimacy. In retrospect, Arrington is vindicated as an intellectual fighting for intellectual integrity while Packer spins in his grave. Then we discuss Finding Forrester as another example of the never-ending fight for academic honesty. We wrap with happy news of an invention set to tackle microplastics in our oceans.   New Mormon History: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Mormon_history#CITEREFQuinn1992 https://www.jstor.org/stable/45228326?seq=19#metadata_info_tab_contents https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1032&context=mormonhistory https://www.dialoguejournal.com/issues/fall-1983/ https://catalog.churchofjesuschrist.org/assets/4836228f-48c3-447f-bcb9-9c2a35496898/0/56 https://www.librarything.com/work/7542838 https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1724&context=byusq https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dale_Morgan https://www.dialoguejournal.com/wp-content/uploads/sbi/articles/Dialogue_V09N01_36.pdf https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=2055&context=byusq https://www.fairlatterdaysaints.org/answers/Mormonism_and_history/Boyd_K._Packer%27s_talk:_%22The_Mantle_is_Far,_Far_Greater_Than_the_Intellect%22#cite_ref-3 https://www.dialoguejournal.com/wp-content/uploads/sbi/articles/Dialogue_V16N03_11.pdf https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fawn_M._Brodie https://sunstone.org/wp-content/uploads/sbi/articles/034-32-37.pdf https://www.thriftbooks.com/w/joseph-smith-and-the-beginnings-of-mormonism_richard-l-bushman/413785/#edition=3500292&idiq=1723338 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alvin_R._Dyer http://www.utlm.org/newsletters/no115.htm Extra thanks to Brian Buchanan for helping piece together the main segment. A wholesome film about unlikely friendship, coming of age, and lifelong learning. It's a drama but not heavy handed, corny, or epic. Directed by Gus Van Sant - it compares to Good Will Hunting in feel but milder in pace and stakes. As said by one of the actors, "It reveals truth quietly." If you write at all in anyway, you'll get more out of this movie.

"Messed up mentors" is this week's theme. "Wonder Boys" (2000) has its issues but was an undeserving  box office flop. A lot going on but could actually have been longer if a couple characters had been fleshed out. We agree with one RT critic:"there's a lot to like in this fine mess of a film".  Sean Connery plays a J.D. Salinger type  in "Finding Forrester" (2000), a film about mentoring, without much of it.  Worth a look, but not director Gus Van Sant's best work.Next 'on the lam' films with Steve McQueen in "The Getaway" (1972) and 'Midnight Special" (2016).Thanks for listening!Did we get something wrong? Hashish will put you in foreign prisons is the theme this week. "Midnight Express" (1978) is the story of an American college student attempting to smuggle 2 kilos of hash. He's caught and thrown into a horrible prison. Loosely based on a true story,  it was great and star Brad Davis stole the show. "Return to Paradise" (1998) is based in Malaysia, but for some reason spent a lot of time in NYC. Not enough time at the prison and too much melodrama back home. A young Joaquin Phoenix gives a believable  performance. Next, mentors in film with "Wonder Boys" (2000) and "Finding Forrester" (2000).Thanks for listening!Did we get something wrong? Mike Rich was a great radio newsman in Portland, first at KGW-AM, and then at KINK-FM he and Les Sarnoff were the top-rated morning drive radio team. Little did we know, cause he kept it to himself, that Mike was cranking away at his keyboard crafting movie screenplays. In 1998 his script for “Finding Forrester,” won a national award, was swept up by Hollywood producers, and landed the great Sean Connery to play the lead. I was one of the friends Mike invited to the Portland premier, and we cheered like proud parents when his name appeared in the opening credits. Mike was on his way-- then came “The Rookie,” “Radio,” “Miracle,” “Secretariat,” and most recently “Cars 3.” Hear about the “Good Old Days” of Portland radio, how he got the inspiration for “Finding Forrester,” and how Mike navigates the industry of Hollywood from his home outside Portland.

Many thanks to Anonymous for commissioning this episode of me and RoShawn covering Finding Forrester, a movie that both RoShawn and I did not expect to like as much as we did. And apologies for how long we took! This is a really interesting example of two people with such engrained expectations that when a film doesn't pursue certain cliches, we're almost baffled. Like, we're so certain it's going to go a certain way that we're preemptively annoyed about it. And then it DOESN'T and we're like, "Oh word?" Anyway, I recommend this film if you want a movie that looks like it's going to be a white savior tale and then inexplicably doesn't bask in the pain of the black characters.

Jason explains why Finding Forrester is the greatest motivational movie of all-time and uses lots of ten dollar words, Bryan defends the stupid invention that is the Spork, Komal's story gets cut for time, and Kyle is present but quietly listens and learns like a horror movie villain that will eventually assume our identities.  Lots of Bryan's parts got edited out because he has a dirty, filthy mouth. In 2000, Gus Van Sant released his second film about a sad older man who mentors a promising young genius only to regain his zest for life along the way, "Finding Forrester." They tried to rekindle the magic from "Good Will Hunting," but they instead ended up making a painfully uncomfortable white savior movie strung together with every cornball trope known to man. Sean Connery plays William Forrester, a reclusive writer who authored a book that is now on the required reading list for every high schooler (aka a J.D. Salinger stand-in). Forrester has a habit of creepily monitoring the comings and goings of everyone in his neighborhood through binoculars and has the ability to read lips or something because he seems to know exactly what everyone is up to. His peeping eventually manages to rouse some local kids into breaking into his apartment to see what his deal is. Rob Brown plays Jamal Wallace, a 16-year-old genius from the Bronx who started journaling regularly after his drug-addicted dad walked out on his family. Jamal excels at basketball, but he hides his intelligence and his ambitions to be writer from everyone in his life until he accidentally drops the backpack containing his journals while robbing the apartment of Connery's character, the local ghostly hermit. F. Murray Abraham plays Professor Robert Crawford, a bitter teacher at a prestigious private school who has spent the past several decades talking down to his students and viciously punishing any dissenters. He is a crazy fanboy of Sean Connery's character and, unbeknownst to him, Connery went out his way to blackball him and prevent his book from being published which made him into the monster that he has become. Join us as we cringe our way though Sean Connery trying to win an Oscar, debate whether or not Jamal is even good at basketball or writing and unleash some of the worst Sean Connery impressions every perpetrated on the general public.
