On a cold January evening in 1925, after a long day of widening an entrance to a newly discovered cave, Floyd Collins lost his footing, knocked over his light, caused a shift in the tunnel and was pinned under a rock. Floyd was hopelessly stuck. Over the next two weeks, miners, geologists, engineers, family members and the Kentucky National Guard worked tirelessly to rescue Floyd. Floyd had passed by the time they reached him, but that wasn't the end of his story. Like most Black people in America, our hearts are filled sorrow. We have been met with this painful yet unfamiliar feeling once again. Within the past few months, we have lost so many black sisters and brother to police brutality. Protestors have taken to the streets to seek justice for our innocent loved ones. As two Black women, it was imperative for us to use our platform to speak up and express our exhaustion. We are tired of our blackness being used as a justification for murder. We are tired of being viewed as unequal simply because of who we are. We are tired of our sisters and brothers being robbed of their futures because of this unjust, white supremacist system. In this podcast, we will be discussing our frustrations with the racist systems that were created without us in mind. We wish that we could list every black life lost in this episode, but we unfortunately ran out of time. We wanted to make sure that we mentioned a few more names: Sean Reed: An innocent young man who was shot and killed by police in Indianapolis, Indiana. Tina Ezekwe: An innocent 16 year old girl who was shot and killed by police in Lagos, Nigeria. Uwa Omozuwa: An innocent 22 year old woman who was raped and murdered in Benin City, Nigeria. Davis McAtee: An innocent man who was killed by the Kentucky National Guard. There are so many more names to list, which saddens us to even say. We want justice for you all and we are fighting for you. Our deepest condolences, Etinosa & Charlene

We have IAN PUNNETT on CLASSIC SHOW REWIND THIS THURSDAY- discussing his book " A Black Night for the Bluegrass Belle" from DECEMBER 2016 - On November 6, 1936, 40-year-old Verna Garr Taylor of LaGrange, KY, was found dead in a soggy ditch just over the Henry County line. Her companion that night, 60-year-old Henry H. Denhardt, the sitting adjutant general of the Kentucky National Guard and recent lieutenant governor of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, insisted that Verna had spontaneously committed suicide with his gun on the same night she tried to return his engagement ring. Because of a series of macabre, bizarre, and sometimes laughable events, "the Iron General" would never be held legally responsible for the murder of this beautiful, honorable widow and businesswoman. But that does not mean that Denhardt was innocent.Just in the time for the 80th anniversary of this tragedy, Ian Punnett who resigned as host of the most listened to overnight show in North America to pursue a PhD in journalism and mass communication has uncovered the final missing, convincing details that bring A Black Night for the Bluegrass Belle to life.
