Peter Kimball is an inspiration for many reasons -- and not just for what you might think. For me, it's helping people feel seen -- some of his films, for instance, feature an all-Deaf cast and are entirely in American Sign Language -- without explaining why. Because it doesn't need explanation. It's bold only because more people aren't willing to do it, but I'm lucky enough to talk with one guy who is.We talk about how he got his start; the state of documentary and independent film; how an academic career is a way forward for filmmakers and what he thinks the strengths (and weaknesses) of current students are; and how (and why) he makes such original, bold choices.Peter's Indie Film Highlight: STAY AWAKE (2022) (https://boxd.it/w7zg) dir. by Jamie Sisley; THE KILLING OF TWO LOVERS (2020) (https://boxd.it/oiN8) dir. by Robert MachoianLinks:Don't Matter Media (https://www.mybrotherisdeaf.com/home)Peter's Faculty Profile (https://www.american.edu/soc/faculty/pkimball.cfm)Washington, DC's Filmmaker of the Month February 2024 (https://entertainment.dc.gov/release/fotm-february-2024)Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/first-time-go/exclusive-content

I've long been interested in sound design and post-production work, so when I got the opportunity to interview Peter Albrechtsen and David Barber, I jumped at the chance. Peter and David worked on the movie The Killing Of Two Lovers (by Robert Machoian), which is rather unique because it has no traditional musical score; all of the sound in the movie is a combination of location sound, foley and designed sounds, carefully mixed into a minimalist-but-complex soundscape. In our discussion, we learn about how this kind of work was developed, how Peter and David worked together to pull it off, and the lengths taken to perfect the sound of the movie. We also learn about each of their backgrounds, as well as explore the future work they are planning. And, as a bonus, we get to learn about how post-production works in a fast-paced, highly collaborative environment. You can find The Killing Of Two Lovers on streaming services, and I strongly suggest you checking it out. It's a wonderful experience, and will open your mind to new ways of considering movie sound. Go hog wild: the latest episode of the Movie Squad pod is here! In their latest episode, Squad-mates Simon Miraudo and Cecilia Allen (filling in for Tristan Fidler, on assignment) cover a couple new cinema releases with Breakfast host Taylah Strano. First up, Simon sniffs out Pig, the newest (for now) film starring Nicolas Cage. In it, he plays a retired chef living in the Oregon wilderness with his prized truffle pig, who returns to the big city when the pig is abducted. However, what begins as a John Wick-styled journey of revenge becomes a meditation on the natural world and a satire of the food industry. Next, Cecilia examines the Aussie doco Palazzo di Cozzo, all about Sicilian immigrant and Melbourne icon Franco Cozzo, and his baroque homewares empire. Does the documentary have the same 'wow' factor as Cozzo's furniture? Listen in to find out. Finally, we throw in a review from back in July, when The Killing of Two Lovers played the Revelation Perth International Film Festival. With the movie now arriving in Australian cinemas, it's worth hearing Tristan and Simon's coverage of what they call one of the best films of the year. (You can also catch Jeff Bullen's interview with director Robert Machoian in the latest episode of [Rewind](https://rtrfm.com.au/story/rewind-on-rtrfm-17-september-2021/).) Besides "we'll fix it in post," perhaps the most common joke in film editing suites is, "the music will carry it." Meaning, a film almost always has the score to help with the emotional impact of any given moment. But what about films without a traditional score? That is the case with "The Killing of Two Lovers," a tense new indie drama from director Robert Machoian. But interestingly, the director and sound designer —Peter Albrechsten — instead created a unique sonic soundscape to act as a score, but without what we'd normally consider "music." This week, we sit down with Machoian and Albrechsten to discuss how this experiment went, and why it happened to work so well. "Funny enough, I don't think I explained it very well to Peter [beforehand]. I was teasing him the other day when we were doing the sound mix at Juniper, he looked at me — I think it was like day two — and he's like, 'I'm kind of the composer!' And I realized that I hadn't explained it enough that, 'yeah, you would be.'" — Robert Machoian, Director of "The Killing of Two Lovers" Watch https://neonrated.com/films/the-killing-of-two-lovers ("The Killing of Two Lovers" at a cinema near you or at home on VOD now). This week on the Film at Lincoln Center podcast we’re featuring a conversation from the 49th New Directors/New Films with The Killing of Two Lovers director Robert Machoian and star Clayne Crawford. After a startling opening image of extreme tension, first-time solo director Robert Machoian’s stark, slow-burn drama never quite goes where you expect. An evocative and atmospheric transmission from wintry Utah, The Killing of Two Lovers is a compact, economical portrait of a husband and father and a compassionate depiction of a family in crisis, which moves at the ominous pace of a thriller. The Killing of Two Lovers is now playing in select theaters.
We talk to Peter Albrechtsen (sound designer) & David Barber (re-recording mixer) about the intense and unique sound work done on director Robert Machoian's film The Killing of Two Lovers. Visually the film plays out over long steady shots, while much of the films plot takes place off screen with sound taking the lead. The director also chose not to have a composer and instead use sound design, almost as musique concrète, to build the tension.

The director also chose not to have a composer and instead use sound design, almost as musique concrète, to build the tension.
Making its premiere at Sundance over a year ago, "The Killing Of Two Lovers" is one of those independent discoveries that makes you excited to see what everyone involved will be doing next. That's because so many elements are well-thought-out and pronounced within the film to tell a story that feels familiar but is being presented in ways unlike we've previously seen before. Part of that is the richly layered performance from Clayne Crawford as the film's protagonist David and the unnerving sound work by Sound Re-Recording Mixer and Sound Designer Peter Albrechtsen. Both of them were kind enough to take some time to tell us about their roles in the making of this excellent film which is now in theaters and on VOD. Take a listen down below. We hope you enjoy it and that you seek this one out. Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on... Matthew Socey reviews the drama The Killing of Two Lovers, a couple video releases and tributes, plus Grab a Pencil...
After a startling opening image of extreme tension, first-time solo director Robert Machoian's stark, slow-burn drama never quite goes where you expect. An evocative and atmospheric transmission from wintry Utah, THE KILLING OF TWO LOVERS is a compact, economical portrait of a husband and father trying to keep it together while seething with rage during a trial separation from his wife. An interior drama set mostly outside, on the vast, lonely street where David (a knockout Clayne Crawford) stays with his ailing father just a few doors up from his wife Niki (Sepideh Moafi) and their four kids, Machoian's film compassionately depicts a family in crisis, while moving at the ominous pace of a thriller. A complex, brooding soundscape from Peter Albrechtsen that seems to emanate directly from the head of its disturbed protagonist, and a claustrophobic aspect ratio contribute to the powerful emotional register of this impressive new work of American independent cinema. Director and writer Robert Machoian joins us for a conversation on the layered storylines, pulling together a superb cast and the importance of calibrating the appropriate atmospherics, such as sound and cinematography, to create a compelling film that punches way above it's weight class.
