Ep. 311: Radu Jude on his film Kontinental '25, reflecting the world today, and going back to basics Welcome to The Last Thing I Saw, with your host, Nicolas Rapold. It's not every day that I feature the same filmmaker twice in two years on the podcast, but we'll make a delightful exception for Radu Jude, director of Kontinental '25. I spoke with Jude about Kontinental '25 at the Berlin Film Festival, where his film won a Silver Bear, and where Jude previously won the Golden Bear for Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn. Kontinental '25 follows a bailiff (an outstanding Eszter Tompa) who faces a personal reckoning after she evicts a man. True to the director of the rambunctious Do Not Expect Too Much from the End of the World, our conversation features his thoughtful reflections on living in the world today, on filmmaking technique, on dinosaur parks, and on what he's been reading and watching. Kontinental '25 will be released theatrically in North America by 1-2 Special. Please support the production of this podcast by signing up at: rapold.substack.com Photo by Steve Snodgrass

This week's show is a special one, as It's our first time getting to review a film via an advanced screener and boy was this a fun flick. The latest film from Berlin Film Festivals Silver Bear winner Radu Jude (Aferim! (Bravo!) and Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn) Do Not Expect Too Much From The End Of The World takes a fierce and darkly comic swipe at modern day life. Overworked and underpaid production assistant Angela (Ilinca Manolache) is assigned to film a workplace safety video for a multinational corporation in Bucharest. When one of the interviewees makes a statement that ignites a scandal, Angela has to re-invent the story. Featuring appearances from Nina Hoss, Uwe Boll, and Angela's TikTok alter-ego Bobiță, Jude's anarchic satire is a wild and unforgettable ride through the vulgar indignities of the 21st century. The film was awarded the Special Jury Award at Locarno Film Festival  and will stream exclusively on MUBI in Canada from May 3, 2024. So tune in and hear our thoughts on this example of Romanian New Wave cinema and then head to Mubi for May 3 to check it out for yourself.   As always Talk to Us Goose www.howdyoulikethatmovie.com Twitter

Radu Jude is a Romanian filmmaker who isn't to everyone's taste. His last film was called "Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn", a provocative satire that won the Golden Bear at the Berlinale in 2021 and pushed him into the center of global cinema. It also annoyed a lot of his countrymen who frankly found it crass. Jude's new film is a near three hour experience called "Do Not Expect Too Much From the End of the World," a triptych of differing styles that leaps, without warning, into a montage documentary before finally settling into the most remarkable single take scene of the year. Jude knows his work is divisive. But let's face it, he loves that.   Subscribe to Locarno Meets for lively conversations about art, culture life and everything in between with the likes of Lambert Wilson, Ken Loach, Harmony Korine, Marianne Slot, Luc Jacquet, Zar Amir Ebrahimi, and more.   Locarno Meets is a Locarno Film Festival original production, brought to you by UBS.   Follow us on Instagram Follow us on TikTok Subscribe to our Newsletter   Host: Alexander Miller Audio Producer: Jack Boswell Video Producer: Claudia Campoli

We are officially in the summer doldrums of movie calendar, and, for Cinema Joes, that means finally paying off this years Oscar bet. As loyal listeners already know, every year Alex, Justin, and Noah try to guess who will win and who will lose at the Academy Awards. This year, Justin took home the top prize by guessing the most categories correctly, and that means we are watching a film of his choice. He was gracious enough to chose an excellent and, until recently, hard to see French film from last year called Petite Maman, directed by Portrait of a Lady on Fire director Céline Sciamma. In our Full Disclosure segment, we also discussed Prey (2022), Bad Luck Banging or Looney Porn (2021), The Gray Man (2022), & Cherry (2021). Keith joins Jason again and this time they're chatting about love as portrayed in a few movies. They start with the seminal Love Story from 1970, looking at its clever structure, its lovely couple and its very outdated sexual roles. A movie from 50 years ago is an interesting contrast to two 2021 films which present much more complex and nuanced views on the mysteries of human relationships, The Worst Person in the World and Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn. What do these newer, more experimental films reveal about love, and is there a majestic simplicity to the Ryan O'Neil - Ali McGraw classic that makes it worth seeing today? Oh, it's been quite a week. Not only do we have some really crazy movies to talk about, the always nutty awards season is about reach its climax (or nadir, depending on what you think about showbiz) with the Academy Awards. And we managed to talk about both in one jam-packed podcast. Let's start with the movies First we've got "The Adam Project" starring Ryan Reynolds as a time-traveling jet pilot. It's from the same people who did "Free Guy" so is it any good? We'll let you know. Then we've got "Deep Water" starring Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas. Plus it's directed by Adrian Lyne, who did "Fatal Attraction." Is it just as scandalous? Uh, you should hear what we think. Neil Rosen tells us about the British drama "Mothering Sunday" and Bill McCuddy has the new Netflix documentary "Bad Vegan." The adventurous Bill Bregoli has two movies that are just too strange to describe in this small space "Everything Everywhere All At Once" and "Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn." Plus there's Amy Schumer's new series "Life & Beth." And speaking of Amy Schumer - she's one of the hosts of this week's Oscar telecast. And we'll have our very own picks of who'll be getting the Oscar. Handy if you're filling out your office pool. So listen in!

Then we let loose with Matrix 4 (27:40), Flee (35:40), The Power of the Dog (39:25), Nightmare Alley (41:30), Mass (41:40), The Lost Daughter (45:30), Drive My Car (47:20), Being the Ricardos (49:45), Red Rocket (52:45), The Novice (55:50), Quo Vadis Aida (56:00), C'mon C'mon (56:40), The Beta Test (57:15), Benedetta (58:35), Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn (59:00). And a few we advise skipping: Petit Maman, What Do We See When We Look at the Sky (1:00:25), Don't Look Up (1:00:35). Classics Corner (1:00:50): Nightmare Alley (1947) and It's a Wonderful Life (1946). Our next episode will be a 32-movie bracket to decide the best film of 2021. To participate in this bracket, please send us a short audio clip where YOU (1) identify yourself and (2) name and (3) explain your favorite movie of 2021. You can send this audio clip directly to any of the hosts OR upload the clip to a Google Drive folder, HERE. Outro: Worst Person in the World, Amanda Marie's Tiny Little Prisons

Each year, Movie Squad hosts Tristan Fidler and Simon Miraudo watch around 80 flicks each, and then in December, they put themselves through the emotional wringer to condense all this filmic greatness into individual Top 30s. Then, to ensure that they only present the ripest produce to Breakfast host Taylah Strano during their end-of-year rundown, they combine their lists using a complicated points system, resulting into an inarguable Top 10 list. Can you really rank art? Yes, it turns out, if you have the correct algorithm. Sorry, folks, we don't make the rules! In 2021, their Top 10 Films (technically a Top 12 once you count the ties) covered the gamut: tiny, tonal masterpieces and gargantuan cinematic events; populist American entertainment and boundary-pushing Romanian and Swedish cinema; stand-up comedy specials and nearly wordless Western spectacles. And, of course, Nicolas Cage. Plus, a double-dose of Mads Mikkelsen! Listen in to hear the countdown (or scroll down to see the list, including the rest of the movies that made the Top 30). Welcome to an extremely adults-only edition of the Movie Squad pod! On Breakfast this week, Tristan Fidler and Simon Miraudo reviewed Julia Ducournau's Cannes Palme d'Or winner Titane, which set tongues wagging on the Croisette (and continues to make audiences faint and vomit in cinemas, apparently) with its tale of a woman who develops a strange, sexual fixation on automobiles. Then, Tristan and Simon reviewed Bad Luck Banging or Looney P**n (which Brekky host Taylah Strano had also seen!); a Romanian black comedy about a school teacher who is put on 'trial' by the parents at her school when her homemade 'adult film' is leaked online. Finally, Simon caught up with Bad Luck Banging director Radu Jude to chat about making his movie in the middle of a pandemic, filming actual sex acts with adult film actors and why Facebook pulled the trailer down in Australia.

The weekly review edition of the show with Erik Childress and Steve Prokopy never plans out a theme but sometimes they just appear. Post-Thanksgiving shopping is never quite as bad in this week's horror film (Black Friday) and the same might be said for Abel Ferrara's new work (Zeros and Ones). Why is Alanis Morrissette complaining about her documentary (Jagged) when a teacher has a more serious beef when her sex tape goes public (Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn). Andrew Garfield is a wannabe composer facing 30 (tick…tick…Boom!) while Robert B. Weide was in his early 20s trying to start a documentary on one of his famous writers (Kurt Vonnegut: Unstuck In Time). Everyone deserves to be hating on Benedict Cumberbatch in Jane Campion's latest (The Power of the Dog) while a group of survivors channel their anger against the Catholic Church into artistic healing (Procession). Will Smith portrays the father of two of the biggest sports stars ever (King Richard) and finally, Erik and Steve, offer balance to the force of criticism that has been crafted over Jason Reitman's latest (Ghostbusters: Afterlife). 0:00 – Intro 2:03 - Black Friday 8:15 – Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn 13:30 – Jagged 21:56 – Zeros and Ones 30:12 – Kurt Vonnegut: Unstuck In Time 39:20 – tick…tick…BOOM! 52:29 – Procession 1:04:13 - The Power of the Dog 1:16:11 – King Richard 1:33:13 - Ghostbusters: Afterlife 1:52:22 - Outro

This week on the Film at Lincoln Center podcast, we're featuring a remote live Q&A from the 59th New York Film Festival with Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn director Radu Jude, moderated by NYFF Director of Programming Dennis Lim. Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn opens Friday, November 19. Get tickets: https://www.filmlinc.org/banging The targets are wide, the satire is broad, and every hit lands and stings in Romanian filmmaker Radu Jude's angry, gleefully graceless Golden Bear winner from this year's Berlin Film Festival. Evoking the unsanitized provocations of the great Dušan Makavejev in his prime, Jude crafts an invigorating, infuriating film in three movements that grows in both power and absurdity, centering around the trials of a teacher (Katia Pascariu) at a prestigious Bucharest school whose life and job are upended when her husband accidentally uploads their private sex tape to the internet for all to see. Jude has no compunction about shocking and skewering in his quest to toy with contemporary society's religious and political hypocrisy, connecting conservative puritanical outrage to an entire history of violence.

Timestamp dei film discussi in puntata: [01:25] The Father - Nulla è come sembra [14:00] Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn [28:15] Shiva Baby [45:00] Nuevo Orden [1:09:00] Nobody - Io sono nessuno [1:22:30] Violation

Welcome back to the Film Comment Podcast. After a months-long hiatus prompted by the Covid-19 pandemic, we are thrilled to kick off the return of Film Comment with one of our favorite ways to connect with our audience: our weekly podcast. We've missed talking about movies with our whip-smart friends and fellow critics, and we're excited to be back here, bringing you insightful commentary on the latest in film culture. Check this space every Tuesday for new episodes. For our first new episode, we delved into the lineup of the 2021 Berlinale. Like several other festivals, this year's edition is taking a hybrid approach, with two staggered parts—a virtual Industry Event, which took place March 1-5, and an in-person event scheduled for June. To dig into some highlights from the (very strong) slate screened online last week, Film Comment editors Devika Girish and Clinton Krute were joined by two of our favorite critics: scholar Erika Balsom, who writes for Artforum, CinemaScope, and other publications, and Ela Bittencourt, a longtime Film Comment contributor. They discussed Alexandre Koberidze's What Do We See When We Look at the Sky, Ramon and Silvan Zürcher's The Girl and the Spider, Radu Jude's Golden Bear-winner Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn, Celine Sciamma's highly anticipated Petite Maman, and Ryûsuke Hamaguchi's Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy, among other films.
