Feed costs are typically the largest component of operational costs in a dairy business, typically making up 50 – 60% of total costs, depending on feeding system, seasons and conditions. Hence it is vital that what is being fed to the cows results in good milk production. David Barber, DairyNEXT nutritionist joins us this month to discuss the important topic of feed conversion efficiency. He outlines what it is, how to measure it, targets for different types of feeding systems and factors that can impact it. He also introduces a metric he calls ‘True Feed Conversion Efficiency', which he uses to determine how economical a farm's feed conversion efficiency is.  Links to useful resources related to this podcast:David Barber: qlddairynutrition@hotmail.com This podcast is an initiative of the NSW DPI Dairy Business Advisory UnitIt is brought to you in partnership the Hunter Local Land ServicesPlease share this podcast with your fellow farmers and colleagues and feel free to contact us with suggestions or comments via this email address thebusinessofdairy@gmail.comFurther NSW DPI Dairy channels to follow and subscribe to include:NSW DPI Dairy Facebook pageDPI Intensive Livestock Twitter feedNSW DPI Dairy NewsletterTranscript hereProduced by Video LiftThe information discussed in this podcast are for informative and educational purposes only and do not constitute advice.

In this episode, Dr. David Barber, chair of the OMA's Section on General and Family Practice and assistant professor at Queen's University's department of family medicine, discusses the challenges facing the primary health system in Ontario, along with some possible solutions. He speaks about how family doctors are facing growing administrative burdens and increasing care requirements for patients. That has led to physician burnout and a large number of unattached patients. He explains that taking some of those burdens off the plates of family doctors would allow doctors to focus on treating patients and make becoming and staying a family doctor more appealing.

I've long been interested in sound design and post-production work, so when I got the opportunity to interview Peter Albrechtsen and David Barber, I jumped at the chance. Peter and David worked on the movie The Killing Of Two Lovers (by Robert Machoian), which is rather unique because it has no traditional musical score; all of the sound in the movie is a combination of location sound, foley and designed sounds, carefully mixed into a minimalist-but-complex soundscape. In our discussion, we learn about how this kind of work was developed, how Peter and David worked together to pull it off, and the lengths taken to perfect the sound of the movie. We also learn about each of their backgrounds, as well as explore the future work they are planning. And, as a bonus, we get to learn about how post-production works in a fast-paced, highly collaborative environment. You can find The Killing Of Two Lovers on streaming services, and I strongly suggest you checking it out. It's a wonderful experience, and will open your mind to new ways of considering movie sound. It's a lucky dip of news as we look through the pages of the Manx Sun newspaper, in the edition for Saturday October 21, 1871. We've looked at pieces of history in and around that year, but we get a glimpse of what was exercising the minds of people in general, with the launch of Isle of Man Railways two years before its first line opened, an unflattering view of the harbour works which gave us the Victoria and Battery Piers in Douglas, and the perhaps surprising shopping hours in Castletown. Our story in Manx is by David Barber, taking a wry look at the work of a jobbing author engaged in a 'vanity project' for a lottery winner. As y kiaull ain - BBC CONCERT ORCHESTRA, Cond. The words 'adversity' and 'inspiring' get thrown around a lot in the world of sports but it is these two words that sum up this weeks guest Benny Roche and the team that he represents - the Australia Pararoo Football Team.   The Pararoo's are Australia's national football team for athletes with cerebral palsy, acquired brain injury or symptoms acquired from stroke but don't let their perceived disabilities fool you - these blokes are ferocious competitors with skills and work ethic that rival some of the best able bodied footballers around.   On top of this, they are also role models in the community who despite being dealt some fairly shitty  hands both personally and professionally, continue to work hard and not let these challenges get in the way of where they are going and what they want to achieve. Benny's story from living with the daily struggles and adversity associated with CP - to  representing his country on 54 occasions (scoring 30 goals) -  to saving the CP Football program here in Australia by raising $160k in under 8 weeks (when the Australia Sports Commission cut their funding) is fair dinkum one of the best stories we've come across whilst doing this podcast.   And if you're inspired further by what you hear today, then check out this extraordinary documentary  by Tim Ferguson (in the link below) that explores in detail many of the players and stories discussed in today's podcast.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_kjh1FmCDAYAlso on the Ball and All podcast this week, we look back on all the action from the first leg of the World Surfing League Australasian tour in Newcastle.   We go 'Around the Grounds' and get the latest happenings in sport both locally and around the world and we pay our respects to Tommy Raudonikis - one of Rugby League's toughest competitors and one of its greatest larrikins. Not surprisingly, COVID-19 has taken over the news section, but still as it all relates to AI and machine learning. Andy and Dave discuss the COVID-19 Open Research Data Set, a free resource of over 29,000 scholarly articles on the coronavirus family, made available for the Allen Institute, CSET, CZI, Microsoft Research, NIH, and the White House OSTP. In similar news, over 100 organizations have signed a “wellcome statement” to make COVID-19 research and data open for access. The New England Complex Systems Institute provides a host of pandemic resources online. The CDC is using machine learning to forecast COVID-19 (adapting its efforts in forecasting influenza outbreaks). And Anodot launches a public machine learning-driven service to track COVID-19. In research, somehow not COVID-19 related, Google Brain and Google Research demonstrate Auto-ML Zero, which discovers complete machine learning algorithms by using basic mathematical functions as building blocks. The report of the week comes from Complex Multilayer Networks Lab along with Harvard, which provides a COVID-19 Infodemics Observatory, processing more than 100M tweets to quantify various sentiments as well as reliability of information from around the globe (with Singapore topping the list for most reliable information). David Barber provides Bayesian Reasoning and Machine Learning for free. And the Bipartisan Commission on Biodefense and Max Brooks provide Germ Warfare: a Very Graphic History (published in 2019). Abe crunches away at our brains with his deep research and encyclopedic knowledge of all things word-y while Josh and Aaron add their unique perspectives to this titillating word and its many implications. Meanwhile, due to the absence of our steadfast literature maven (Efren), Aaron steps up and does his best impression of a person who knows how to read poetry. Canadian singer-songwriter David Graff has just returned to writing and recording music with his wonderful new release ”Supposed To Fly". Despite some early success, with songs placed in movies and television, and an EP called "Some Of What I Know", David dropped out of the music business in the late nineties to pursue a career as a visual artist. However, his love of music as a creative outlet has brought him back with a strong collection of songs co-produced with his daughter Julia Graff and James Perrella that really deserve loads of airplay. With a voice that feels like a blend of Tom Petty, Don Henley and Joe Walsh, and some fabulous musicianship from a strong group of side players including Steve Dawson, Kirby Barber, David Barber and John Ellis, this radio friendly release has some finely crafted songs that run the gamut from reflections on life, to cautionary tales about relationships and favourite trucks. We caught up with David at home on Bowen Island to chat about the new album. For more information, visit http://davidgraffmusic.com. Music: David Graff "The Only One I've Got", "Supposed To Fly" and "Tough City" from "Supposed To Fly" (2018, Self).

Sue Buckmaster is a puppeteer and artistic director of children's theatre company Theatre-Rites. Her theatrical lineage stretches back generations - her great-grandfather was a music hall entertainer who juggled on a revolving table while riding a unicycle. Her show, The Broke 'n' Beat Collective, weaves puppetry with hip hop to explore some of the pressures faced by young people from unemployment to self-harming. The Broke 'n' Beat Collective is touring the UK. Mike Daligan is an author and motivational speaker who has worked in the voluntary sector for over 30 years. He has also travelled to Russia, Bulgaria and Belgium to advise on self- help projects in these regions. In his autobiography, The Other Side of the Doors, he writes about his troubled childhood in London's docklands during the Second World War and the various turns his life has taken ever since. The Other Side of the Doors is published by Edale Press. Don Black OBE is an Oscar-winning lyricist who has written the lyrics for the musical Mrs Henderson Presents... His theatre credits include Tell Me On A Sunday, Aspects of Love with Andrew Lloyd Webber and Sunset Boulevard with Christopher Hampton. He also wrote the lyrics for The Italian Job, Out of Africa, True Grit, and five James Bond movies in collaboration with John Barry. In 2007 he was inducted into the Songwriter's Hall of Fame. Mrs Henderson Presents is based on the story of Laura Henderson who joins forces with the theatre impresario Vivian Van Damm to open the Windmill Theatre in 1937. Mrs Henderson Presents... is at London's Noel Coward Theatre. David Barber is Her Majesty the Queen's swan marker, a role he has held for 22 years. Chicken is in David Barber’s blood. He has lived and breathed the family business his entire life, starting at a young age by regularly going into work with his father, Gus, who started the family business with his wife, Marjorie, 55 years ago. David started working summers at Barber Foods at the age of 12 and joined the company full time 1981 after receiving a bachelor of science degree in marketing from Babson College in Wellesley, Mass. He has worked in every aspect of the business including, boning chicken, truck driving, maintenance, quality assurance, product development, human resources and operations. As the need for sales became more important, David assumed this responsibility in 1984. In 1987, David and his brother Steve became the second generation managers as their father Gus stepped back from day to day operations. They initiated aggressive expansion of the family business focusing on national distribution. As vice president of sales and marketing, David’s responsibilities grew to include Barber Foods’ Retail, Club, Food Service and National Account divisions In his position as executive vice president, David played an integral role in multiple areas of the business in addition to his focus on sales and marketing. David also insures that his late father Gus’ legacy of an unshakeable commitment to quality, service and associates continues. Barber Foods produces close to 70 percent of all the stuffed chicken sold in the United States. Their retail and foodservice products can be found across the country and Canada and in some foreign markets. In 2010, David became president and CEO of the company, leading it through an acquisition with AdvancePierre Foods, an Ohio-based company with 11 plants in four states. During this time he has been instrumental with the integration of Barber Foods into the significantly larger AdvancePierre Foods. David grew up in Cape Elizabeth, where he currently resides with his wife and two sons. He enjoys living in Maine and takes advantage of all it has to offer with activities such as boating, skiing, hiking and swimming. Growing up in the food business, David enjoys cooking with his family and friends.
