Ep. 311: Radu Jude on his film Kontinental '25, reflecting the world today, and going back to basics Welcome to The Last Thing I Saw, with your host, Nicolas Rapold. It's not every day that I feature the same filmmaker twice in two years on the podcast, but we'll make a delightful exception for Radu Jude, director of Kontinental '25. I spoke with Jude about Kontinental '25 at the Berlin Film Festival, where his film won a Silver Bear, and where Jude previously won the Golden Bear for Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn. Kontinental '25 follows a bailiff (an outstanding Eszter Tompa) who faces a personal reckoning after she evicts a man. True to the director of the rambunctious Do Not Expect Too Much from the End of the World, our conversation features his thoughtful reflections on living in the world today, on filmmaking technique, on dinosaur parks, and on what he's been reading and watching. Kontinental '25 will be released theatrically in North America by 1-2 Special. Please support the production of this podcast by signing up at: rapold.substack.com Photo by Steve Snodgrass
«Do Not Expect Too Much from the End of the World» vom rumänischen Regisseur Radu Jude («Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn») wiederum wirft mit seiner wilden Abrechnung mit der Gegenwart alle Erwartungen über den Haufen. Ausserdem: Was halten Alan, Olivia und Olivier von den Oscars?Timestamps: 09:45 May December20:21 Do Not Expect Too Much from the End of the World
Radu Jude is a Romanian filmmaker who isn't to everyone's taste. His last film was called "Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn", a provocative satire that won the Golden Bear at the Berlinale in 2021 and pushed him into the center of global cinema. It also annoyed a lot of his countrymen who frankly found it crass. Jude's new film is a near three hour experience called "Do Not Expect Too Much From the End of the World," a triptych of differing styles that leaps, without warning, into a montage documentary before finally settling into the most remarkable single take scene of the year. Jude knows his work is divisive. But let's face it, he loves that.

This week, Glenn and Daniel consider watching a fourth-wall prodding, self-aware film in which Nicolas Cage plays dueling versions of himself, gradually crafting a screenplay and over-the-top conclusion to the very film that we’re watching. But enough about Adaptation. On to The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. And then we check out an epistemological discourse […]

Keith joins Jason again and this time they're chatting about love as portrayed in a few movies. They start with the seminal Love Story from 1970, looking at its clever structure, its lovely couple and its very outdated sexual roles. A movie from 50 years ago is an interesting contrast to two 2021 films which present much more complex and nuanced views on the mysteries of human relationships, The Worst Person in the World and Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn. What do these newer, more experimental films reveal about love, and is there a majestic simplicity to the Ryan O'Neil - Ali McGraw classic that makes it worth seeing today? Spend 70 minutes or so with Keith and Jason and hear their thoughts. And please leave feedback and subscribe. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/jason-sacks/message
Oh, it's been quite a week. Not only do we have some really crazy movies to talk about, the always nutty awards season is about reach its climax (or nadir, depending on what you think about showbiz) with the Academy Awards. And we managed to talk about both in one jam-packed podcast. Let's start with the movies First we've got "The Adam Project" starring Ryan Reynolds as a time-traveling jet pilot. It's from the same people who did "Free Guy" so is it any good? We'll let you know. Then we've got "Deep Water" starring Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas. Plus it's directed by Adrian Lyne, who did "Fatal Attraction." Is it just as scandalous? Uh, you should hear what we think. Neil Rosen tells us about the British drama "Mothering Sunday" and Bill McCuddy has the new Netflix documentary "Bad Vegan." The adventurous Bill Bregoli has two movies that are just too strange to describe in this small space "Everything Everywhere All At Once" and "Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn." Plus there's Amy Schumer's new series "Life & Beth." And speaking of Amy Schumer - she's one of the hosts of this week's Oscar telecast. And we'll have our very own picks of who'll be getting the Oscar. Handy if you're filling out your office pool. So listen in!

We're back with another historical episode, this time casting our gaze back onto the distant cinema of 2021... Yes, this is the one where we get to talk about everything we didn't get the chance to last year (as well as revisiting some things we did), in a chat which stretches from Tsai Ming Liang's DAYS to ARSÈNE WENGER: INVINCIBLE. While neither of us had or have seen the new Spiderman film, we do discuss, however fleetingly, such blockbuster treats as DUNE and BOND, Sir Ridley Scott's duo of dramas THE LAST DUEL and HOUSE OF GUCCI, alongside arthouse favourites like Andreas Fontana's AZOR and Ryusuke Hamaguchi's DRIVE MY CAR. Featuring covers of ‘American Tterroristt' (RXK Nephew) from Emmett and ‘Estilo Pampaneo' (Abel Fleury), ‘Drive My Car' (Eiko Ishibashi) and ‘I'm An Accompanist' (Sparks) from Sam. "Objective: I don't like the word!" André chats with Romanian pravda-vocateur Radu Jude whose film Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn hits Australian cinemas November 25. In this funny and nervous Zoom ramble, the two discuss BLBOLP, which follows a Romanian school teacher whose sex tape is leaked. Radu and André cover male nudity in film, being a teenager at the cinemathèque, queer liberation, the need to work out before a shoot, and Radu's motivation behind filmmaking. Surprisingly, Soda Jerk comes up in the chat. EDIT/CW: Contrapoints is not 'fully' a PHD student. André also reveals an appreciation for problematic film Blue is The Warmest Colour. CJ thinks The Power Of The Dog settles into one consistent tone, Titane is perfectly moving but inevitable and Bad Luck or Loony Porn is an unsubtle attack on hypocrisy and conservatism.

Roly and Shady don't quite know what to make of Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn and the walking pod throws up as many distractions as the screen (magpies, street markets, cricket games, traffic, etc.)
The weekly review edition of the show with Erik Childress and Steve Prokopy never plans out a theme but sometimes they just appear. Post-Thanksgiving shopping is never quite as bad in this week's horror film (Black Friday) and the same might be said for Abel Ferrara's new work (Zeros and Ones). Why is Alanis Morrissette complaining about her documentary (Jagged) when a teacher has a more serious beef when her sex tape goes public (Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn). Andrew Garfield is a wannabe composer facing 30 (tick…tick…Boom!) while Robert B. Weide was in his early 20s trying to start a documentary on one of his famous writers (Kurt Vonnegut: Unstuck In Time). Everyone deserves to be hating on Benedict Cumberbatch in Jane Campion's latest (The Power of the Dog) while a group of survivors channel their anger against the Catholic Church into artistic healing (Procession). Will Smith portrays the father of two of the biggest sports stars ever (King Richard) and finally, Erik and Steve, offer balance to the force of criticism that has been crafted over Jason Reitman's latest (Ghostbusters: Afterlife). 0:00 – Intro 2:03 - Black Friday 8:15 – Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn 13:30 – Jagged 21:56 – Zeros and Ones 30:12 – Kurt Vonnegut: Unstuck In Time 39:20 – tick…tick…BOOM! 52:29 – Procession 1:04:13 - The Power of the Dog 1:16:11 – King Richard 1:33:13 - Ghostbusters: Afterlife 1:52:22 - Outro
This week on the Film at Lincoln Center podcast, we're featuring a remote live Q&A from the 59th New York Film Festival with Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn director Radu Jude, moderated by NYFF Director of Programming Dennis Lim. Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn opens Friday, November 19. Get tickets: https://www.filmlinc.org/banging The targets are wide, the satire is broad, and every hit lands and stings in Romanian filmmaker Radu Jude's angry, gleefully graceless Golden Bear winner from this year's Berlin Film Festival. Evoking the unsanitized provocations of the great Dušan Makavejev in his prime, Jude crafts an invigorating, infuriating film in three movements that grows in both power and absurdity, centering around the trials of a teacher (Katia Pascariu) at a prestigious Bucharest school whose life and job are upended when her husband accidentally uploads their private sex tape to the internet for all to see. Jude has no compunction about shocking and skewering in his quest to toy with contemporary society's religious and political hypocrisy, connecting conservative puritanical outrage to an entire history of violence.

Alle Themen in Folge #12 - Timecodes: 00:00:00 - Begrüßung und Einleitung 00:03:35 - News: Deadpool, James Bond, Star Trek & Co. 00:23:10 - Bad Luck Banging - Der Berline-Gewinner 00:50:32 - Bo Burnham's Inside - Netflix Original Comedy? 01:04:16 - First Cow - gelungenes emotionales Drama?

Timestamp dei film discussi in puntata: [01:25] The Father - Nulla è come sembra [14:00] Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn [28:15] Shiva Baby [45:00] Nuevo Orden [1:09:00] Nobody - Io sono nessuno [1:22:30] Violation
Welcome back to the Film Comment Podcast. After a months-long hiatus prompted by the Covid-19 pandemic, we are thrilled to kick off the return of Film Comment with one of our favorite ways to connect with our audience: our weekly podcast. We've missed talking about movies with our whip-smart friends and fellow critics, and we're excited to be back here, bringing you insightful commentary on the latest in film culture. Check this space every Tuesday for new episodes. For our first new episode, we delved into the lineup of the 2021 Berlinale. Like several other festivals, this year's edition is taking a hybrid approach, with two staggered parts—a virtual Industry Event, which took place March 1-5, and an in-person event scheduled for June. To dig into some highlights from the (very strong) slate screened online last week, Film Comment editors Devika Girish and Clinton Krute were joined by two of our favorite critics: scholar Erika Balsom, who writes for Artforum, CinemaScope, and other publications, and Ela Bittencourt, a longtime Film Comment contributor. They discussed Alexandre Koberidze's What Do We See When We Look at the Sky, Ramon and Silvan Zürcher's The Girl and the Spider, Radu Jude's Golden Bear-winner Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn, Celine Sciamma's highly anticipated Petite Maman, and Ryûsuke Hamaguchi's Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy, among other films.
Welcome to The Last Thing I Saw, with your host Nicolas Rapold. London calling!
