By the end of the school year, you have a lot of data at your fingertips. There are two important actions to take. The first is to share it with your schoolwide community as part of your annual PBIS evaluation. The second is to plan how you'll build on your success next year. In this episode, we're talking about what it takes to evaluate PBIS implementation and use data to create an action plan at the end of the year. Joining us in our conversation are Diane LaMaster, Michele Cook, and Kim Barker. Diane LaMaster is a technical assistance coordinator with the Midwest PBIS Network. Diane brings with her decades of experience in various roles including as a special education teacher, behavior interventionist, and a district coach. Michele Cook has been a special educator, PE teacher, PBIS coach, building principal, and executive director of student support services in the Gresham-Barlow School District in Gresham, OR. Now she works part time to support multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS) implementation in the district. Kim Barker is a long-time educator from Gresham-Barlow School District, too. This year marks her 21st year with the district where she now works as an administrator for Deep Creek Damascus K-8 School. During our conversation, we explored the way data serve as historical references for where implementation has been and where it will go in the future. We made it to 20 episodes, y'all! We're so grateful that so many people have taken the time to give the show a listen and support the bands we've been fortunate enough to talk to. As we did with the 10th episode, we decided to have a discussion about influential albums in our lives. This time, we chose songs/albums that led us to pick up an instrument, made us decide to start a band and/or led us to where we are today as musicians and songwriters. And, because we get lonely, we decided to have our friends in Grifters & Shills come along for the ride. They have a new album called Fireball coming out on June 17th and we're premiering two songs from the album! The first, Live On Purpose, features our very own Kim Barker on harmony vocals! Also, it is worth noting that when Kim says she enjoyed the F/X soundtrack, she is actually referring to the song Axel F from Beverly Hills Cop. She didn't realize which song it was until after the recording. Oops.If you want to check out the songs we chose, here's the playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1gjmxX0vJBWNZBpIPfArRF?si=5a962321450c44e6
This week we've got six hot new releases to refresh your podcast rotation. Words like "girl boss," "gaslight" and "gatekeeper" have taken over on social media but, like a game of telephone, how they're used in memes can be a long way from their original meaning. In its latest season, the Canadian podcast Rehash hones in on internet terminology and archetypes and untangles it all. Hosts Hannah and Maia (otherwise known as Broey Deschanel on YouTube) sit down with Podcast Playlist host Leah-Simone Bowen to chat about what viral moments and internet drama say about wider culture and whether the shenanigans all add up to a net positive or negative. Plus, we'll take a look at the latest seasons and new listens from podcast institutions and newbies alike, including a deep dive into the lengths the province of Alberta went to keep rats from crossing over the border from Saskatchewan. Podcasts featured this week: Secret Life of Canada: "Is it true that Alberta is a rat-free province? We look into why the province of Alberta took rat hating to a new level." California Love: K-Pop Dreaming: "Growing up in Koreatown during the 90s and 2000s, host Vivian Yoon was an emo-listening teenager who embraced American pop culture. At least that's what it seemed from the outside. But at home, by herself, what she listened to was K-Pop. How Vivian's hidden love for the music is propelling her to explore the connections between K-Pop and her hometown." The Turning: Room of Mirrors: " By tracing the origins of this unusual lifestyle, starting with the legacy of choreographer George Balanchine and the intimate stories of young dancers, we expose the beauty of an artform and the complexity of ballet culture." You Didn't See Nothin': "Part investigation and part memoir, "You Didn't See Nothin" follows Yohance Lacour as he revisits the story [of Lenard Clark] that introduced him to the world of investigative journalism, and examines how its ripple effects have shaped his life over the past quarter-century." The evidence against him seemed solid, but prosecutors, confusingly, dropped the case. They've never refiled. How did a case that seemed this open-and-shut fall apart with such a whimper? To find answers, Kim heads back to Laramie and grapples with conflicting memories and dueling narratives. In episode one, Kim starts to call up Shelli's family members to try to piece together what happened. Jesus, @Thisfunktional of Thisfunktional.com, talks with Kim Barker author of "The Taliban Shuffle," the book which the movie "Whiskey Tango Foxtrot" is based on.
Hollister & O’Toole, or, in keeping with the title’s NATO Phonetic Alphabet, Hotel & Oscar debate the merits of Tina Fey’s latest offering: Whiskey Tango Foxtrot. Directed by Glenn Ficarra & John Requa (Crazy, Stupid, Love). Cinematography by Xavier Grobet. Screenplay by Robert Carlock; based on a fictionalized account of Kim Barker’s book "The Taliban Shuffle: Strange Days in Afghanistan and Pakistan”*. Produced by Tina Fey and Lorne Michaels. Also starring Margot Robbie, Martin Freeman, Alfred Molina, Christopher Abbott, and Billy Bob Thornton. Cameos by Josh Charles (Will lives!) and Cherry Jones. *Though the film is based on Kim Barker’s book, Tina Fey’s character is Kim Baker (without the first “r”). O’Toole swears that at one point in the movie someone addresses Tina Fey as “Tina”. Is O’Toole crazy? (Wait, don’t answer that.)
Kim Barker's true-life story about being a war correspondent in Afghanistan is now the subject of a new movie starring Tina Fey. We talk to her about the good, the bad and the absurd experiences she had overseas and with Hollywood. Plus, some whiskey-themed homework from Amy Stewart.

My next guest has me in awe! Journalist Kim Barker's travels make all of my adventures abroad seem like Travel Lite, & I don't mind telling her, because she's earned every single one of her stories. As the South Asia Bureau Chief for the Chicago Tribune from 2004 to 2009, Kim has covered major stories like the assassination of former Prime Minister of Pakistan Benazir Bhutto, & the rising militancy in both Pakistan & Afghanistan. Kim shared some of her hair-raising tales with me at Hostelling International in New York, & revealed what did...& didn't...make it into her book called, "The Taliban Shuffle." My biggest take-away from Kim's conversation (besides the fact that she's a famously funny & incredibly lovely human being), is that if she could survive living in the Middle East as a single Western woman, then to all my ladies out there, we simply have no more excuses! Don't ever let fear hold you back...unless maybe there's a national revolution going on. I hope Kim's stories were as inspiring to you as they were to me, & if so, then make sure to purchase her book on Amazon, or follow her on Twitter at @Kim_Barker.
For this show, we go on two different journeys across Asia with two restless women bitten by the travel bug. Kim Barker did 'The Taliban Shuffle' as Afghanistan and Pakistan correspondent for the Chicago Tribune for eight years from 2001. She lived a high-pressure life chasing suicide bombings and rigged elections. She spoke to Neda Vanovac about bluffing her way through and never losing her fear. Steph Liong brings us the story of Australian writer Carolyn Shine, who thought moving continents would be easier than moving suburbs, and went from Bondi to Vietnam. We also take another peek into the world of the Rereaders, who are talking about the exclusion of indigenous poets in Australian anthologies. Kim Barker, The Taliban Shuffle: Strange Days in Afghanistan and Pakistan, published by Scribe Publications, produced by Neda Vanovac. Carolyn Shine, Single White Female in Hanoi, published by Transit Lounge Publishing, prduced by Stephanie Liong. The Rereaders, featuring Sam Twyford-Moore, Rebecca Giggs, and Fiona Wright, produced by Jessica Minshall.
