Growing up in rural Texas, Larry heard stories of his relatives enduring hardships that were the result of the 1930s Dust Bowl. His family's connection to those trying times plateaued with the loss of multiple lives as the result of a single tornado. These tragedies spoke to the young man's heart. Originally on the path to become an electrical engineer, the rural Texas dust whispered to his soul… he needed to be part of a solution. This was the catalyst that launched a lifelong journey to conserve the blessings of the top soil that belongs to the High Plains of the Western United States. Larry's desire to relegate the Dust Bowl to American history books, had him embark on a decades long passion for soil conservation that culminated with the award winning TV show, Out On The Land.  Please join me to hear the story of a man who dedicated his life to the soil and those that farm and ranch our blessed America.

Sukhema knows about impermanence. He has lost his name (Larry Butler), his country (the United States of America), and more than a friend or two along his journey.  He encounters it all with the heart of a poet. And as you listen to our discussion, you will hear him use poetry to teach us all about the importance of the art of losing things. he introduced me to ‘One Art' by Elizabeth Bishop. This passage works well with our theme on this season of the Death Dhamma podcast, Lose something every day.  Accept the fluster  of lost door keys, the hour badly spent.  The art of losing isn't hard to master. Sukhema is the co-editor of Living Our Dying.  A work inspired by his friend the late David Donnison. Living Our Dying includes the work of thirty-two writers, and was compiled to creatively discuss a subject often regarded as taboo. Sukhema also facilitates a group called die-a-log.  Creating an environment where a small group of people get together and discuss death. It is informal, there are no notes, just sharing and speaking from the heart.  His ease at sharing from the heart is evident throughout our discussion. I encourage you to listen in and hear from someone who masterfully lives with the impermanence of losing a watch, will help his granddaughter bury her hamster, and oversee memorial services for his own friends and loved ones. Even during this period of isolation, and with no venues open for you to perform, its still a great time to work on your live performance, because if you don't have a live show worth watching, no one will pay attention, especially if you're only platform is on Facebook Live. Don't make your live show the last thing on your list of things to accomplish in your career. On this episode, we have back in the studio Larry Butler. Larry has devoted his entire life to the live performance side of the music business. He played keyboards and guitar in bar bands during high school and college in Ohio, which evolved into club and concert promoting, and then tour manager for such artists as Randy Newman, Ry Cooder and Isaac Hayes. Those efforts led to 20+ years at Warner Bros. Records as VP Artist Relations. Although the focus at WBR was to utilize touring to sell records, he also coached many young artists in performance, staging and media relations. During this episode, we discuss: When doing a Facebook Live Performance, remember your job is to entertain, and your performance is key to attracting and keeping your viewers. Make your boring live performance entertaining. Your iphone is a conduit to a visual medium. Choreograph your show. Have a Banner Promoting Yourself. Determining how long your performance on Facebook Live be. Using body language to convey your emotions during a song. Using proper microphone etiquette. How you entertain your audience is timeless. Larry heads up Did It Music (http://www.diditmusic.com) in Nashville Tennessee. His focus these days is teaching young singer/songwriter/performers in the art of becoming experienced artist/writer/entertainers. His most recent book is The Singer/Songwriter Rule Book: 101 Ways To Help You Improve Your Chances Of Success, which is available at Amazon in digital and print. Larry Butler bio – Did It Music – Nashville - March 2018 Larry Butler has devoted his entire life to the music business, specializing in live performance and touring. Larry played keyboards in Ohio bands during high school and college, also serving as band manager and lead singer. While still in college, he was a successful nightclub owner and local concert promoter in Cincinnati. Also during that time period, his band performed as the opening act for the Rolling Stones, the Beach Boys and the Byrds, among others. He even jammed with Jimi Hendrix once at a late night Northern Kentucky club following his Cincinnati show. Larry moved to Los Angeles to begin working as a tour manager for such artists as Randy Newman and Ry Cooder. He then took on an international tour for Isaac Hayes, which included the first-ever performances for mixed race audiences in South Africa. Following the tour, he accompanied Isaac and his band into the studio for his post-Shaft comeback album. In the late ‘70s, Larry began working with Warner Bros. Records as an in-house tour manager for brand new artists, bringing professionalism to their staging, performance techniques and touring logistics. Those efforts led to a full-time position at WBR, first as National College Manager, then West Coast Artist Development Director and finally as VP of Artist Relations. Larry spent the next 20+ years touring with an unrivaled roster of talent, winning a couple of PollStar Artist Development Executive awards along the way. In addition to guiding a touring field staff, he devised, cleared, funded and settled all artist tour support budgets while overseeing the tour marketing and promotion tours for the Warner Bros. and Reprise promotion and sales teams. From there, Larry joined Bill Silva Management as General Manager where he coordinated the projects of the firm’s managers and artists. He also organized and ran Jason Mraz’s publishing during the wild run of “I’m Yours.” Simultaneously, he served as day-to- day manager for Silva client Robert Francis through his Atlantic Records signing and subsequent #1 single and touring success in Europe. In 2014, Larry concurrently took on the position of General Manager for The Artist Cooperative, an independent record label services company comprised of mostly former Warner Bros. and Reprise Records promotion and marketing executives. Larry now heads up his own Did It Music from the relative security and serenity of Nashville. He is also affiliated with ASCAP as a songwriter and music publisher. He has also accumulated 365 Musical Tips of the Day from rock stars he has encountered along the way regarding songwriting, recording, and performing, and he posts one a day on Twitter. You can follow him at @larryfromohio. Larry’s first book was one of advice and tips for songwriters, musicians and performers entitled The Twelve Lessons of Rock ‘N’ Roll (for Your Career and Your Life), which is available at Amazon/Kindle. The Lessons are based on experiences and events he witnessed while on the road with rock ‘n’ roll artists and bands. There’s even a chapter about being in the right place at the right time, with specifics about the Rolling Stones gig and the Jimi Hendrix jam. His current book is THE SINGER/SONGWRITER BOOT CAMP RULE BOOK: 101 WAYS TO IMPROVE YOUR CHANCES OF SUCCESS. The essence of the book is that nothing happens until you have created the music, learned the craft of performance, and mastered the art of live entertainment. That’s what this book is all about. It is also available at Amazon in digital and print form at http://amzn.to/2o4osB8

Boggy Creek Farm got it its start in 1991 selling produce at a farm stand in Austin, Texas – and to the original Whole Foods Market, which also there in Austin. Now with two farms – one in Gause, a little over an hour outside of Austin, and one just 2.5 miles from the state capital in the heart of Austin – my guest, Carol Ann Sayle, and her husband and farming partner, Larry Butler, sell their fresh produce and value added products – including smoke-dried tomatoes that have had my mouth watering since I first read about them in a Growing for Market article many, many years ago – at the farm stand on their farm in Austin. Carol Ann shares the story of Boggy Creek Farm’s start, how she and Larry manage the challenges and reap the rewards of having two farms over an hour apart, pricing strategies, and the nitty gritty of growing year-round in Texas. The Farmer to Farmer Podcast is generously supported by Vermont Compost Company.
