Health scares have a way of prioritizing things. For Lauren Denitzio, undergoing heart surgery at the young age of 25 brought one key priority into sharp focus: music. Since then, the musician has approached their creative venue Worriers as a form of pure expression, both musically and emotion. The band's earnest, joyful music has earned it a place in the world of punk, including an upcoming tour opening for Alkaline Trio. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Lauren Denitzio is the driving force behind the band Worriers. They began the band after having been in another band called The Measure, and have now released 3 full-length albums along with a few EPs, most recently a 5-song album of cover songs featuring their take on Rancid, Tom Petty, The New Pornographers and more. Now in their 10th year of existence, Worriers has established themselves as a true standout in the current punk scene, and have been able to partner with labels like No Idea, 6131, Don Giovanni, Side One Dummy along with self-releasing material. On top of this, they have worked with some really fantastic producers including Laura Jane Grace and John Agnello. The band is essentially Lauren's project, and is currently backed by Nick Psillas on bass and Mikey Erg on drums and Frank Piegaro (formerly of the band Ensign) on guitar. As Lauren describes in the episode, having a certain fluidity in the make up of the band has allowed them to take on more opportunities and not be as restricted by what sometimes conventional band structures might otherwise hinder. Currently living in Los Angeles, Lauren has roots in the East Coast having grown up in New Jersey and living in Brooklyn for many years after attending college. Besides performing full time in Worriers, They have an established career in illustration and design, which we talk about during the episode. Hello and welcome to REPLY ALT, the best email newsletter about music in the entire world which is also sometimes a podcast—the best podcast in the entire world. Today it’s a podcast.Sometimes I will spend a few hours preparing for an interview so that I will pass as someone who at least wields some vague sense of what the fuck they’re talking about. Sometimes, if I’m being honest, I will be cramming my prep in at the very last minute. But talking to today’s guest is something I feel like I’ve been preparing for my entire life. Kevin Devine played in the first band (or at least among the first bands) I ever saw perform way back in… 1997? Like me, Kevin grew up on Staten Island, New York, and cut his teeth playing at local spots there, particularly a DIY hall called The Joint, which hosted all-ages shows every Friday night. Kevin and I talked a lot about growing up with that background and how the blue-collar punk scene on Staten Island was drastically different than the more respected one happening just a ferry ride away in Manhattan. We both agreed that it instilled in us a small-town mentality that still informs how we operate within the music industry today. Will this incredibly niche subject be interesting to anyone who grew up outside the tri-state area? I don’t know! Not my business! We talked about a few non-Shaolin topics as well—the path his career has taken since his Miracle of 86 days (and his Delusion days, if we want to go really far back), as well as Nirvana and tips for cutting your own hair during the paindemic.Kevin has a new EP out called No One’s Waiting Up For Me Tonight in which he delivers more of the familiar, comforting sounds I’ve enjoyed from him over the last 20+ years. I guess we should have talked about that but we didn’t. Again, not my problem!!Oh, and we mentioned a 1998 show at which Kevin’s band played an outdoor skate demo. I will embarrass him by including that video below. Listen to the episode to hear the story behind his incredibly baggy pants! (The story is that baggy pants were cool as heck back then. Really not much of a story now that I think about it.)(The above photo was taken by Erik Tanner.)Also, a housekeeping note for dedicated REPLT ALTers: If you ordered a zine, the last batch of them shipped out on Friday morning. Hopefully they will arrive to you safely.Check out previous REPLY ALT episodes with Laura Stevenson, Jonah Ray, Sarah Tudzin [Illuminati Hotties], David Anthony, Chris Farren, Lauren Denitzio [Worriers], Todd Taylor [Razorcake], and Jenny Owen Youngs. They’re all on Spotify and Apple for your listening displeasure.Follow me on all the internet stuff.Twitter | Instagram | Website Get full access to REPLY ALT at danozzi.substack.com/subscribe

Hello and welcome to another edition of REPLY ALT, the only newsletter about music ever to exist. Thanks to everyone who bought a copy of the zine I put on sale last week. They sold out way, wayyyy faster than I’d expected, so apologies if you didn’t get one but my insecurity rendered me incapable of printing literally a single copy more than I did. Today’s newsletter is once again a podcast. Please see previous episodes with Jonah Ray, Sarah Tudzin [Illuminati Hotties], David Anthony, Chris Farren, Lauren Denitzio [Worriers], Todd Taylor [Razorcake], and Jenny Owen Youngs. They’re all on Spotify and Apple for your listening pleasure.Today’s guest is the one of the most talented songwriters currently walking the earth, Laura Stevenson. We talked a bit about settling into motherhood, songwriting, shitty haircuts, and growing up on Long Island. We also spitballed the premise for an Encino Man sequel entitled Ensequel Man (Hollywood producers, get at us! We can literally have a draft done by this afternoon!). Since it’s getting an expanded reissue this year, we also did a little reminiscing about her 2011 album Sit Resist, which I once listed as one of my ten favorite albums of the last decade.Laura writes such beautifully intricate music, but I do worry that it gets lost that she is also equally hilarious. I remember seeing her in Baltimore years ago and the crowd was pin-drop silent as she performed one of her many intensely vulnerable songs about the imperfections of the human condition. Then, after she finished and everyone applauded, she said, “Thank you, that was an ICP song.” So I hope her humor comes through here!OK stop reading and start listening!Oh, and also, I always usually like to use my own photos for REPLY ALT but since I couldn’t find any of Laura and me that were not thoroughly embarrassing and unfit for internet consumption, she sent me the above photo, as taken by Em Dubin.Oh, and also also, I routinely give Laura’s NPR Tiny Desk concert a rewatch. So intimate and so lovely. And while pregnant! Please see previous episodes with: Sarah Tudzin [Illuminati Hotties], David Anthony, Chris Farren, Lauren Denitzio [Worriers], Todd Taylor [Razorcake], and Jenny Owen Youngs. They’re also available on streaming services like Spotify and Apple and all that. Oh and subscribe to REPLY ALT if you don’t already for some god unknown reason!Today’s newsletter/podcast is an interview with Jonah Ray. You may Jonah from… well, a lot of things, actually. That was a theme in much of our chat—making something of yourself in our hellish gig economy. Because why have one big job when you can have 65 smaller gigs, baby! (Thanks, boomers!) Jonah is an actor, a comedian, a musician, and, most importantly, a paid subscriber to REPLY ALT. He has been the host of the revived Mystery Science Theater, co-hosted The Meltdown with Kumail Nanjiani, hosted the podcast Jonah Raydio (on which I have been a guest), and once starred in a Bing commercial.Jonah and I had a really good chat about trying to impress our parents with our “careers” in the arts (which we determined is a waste of time), growing up and going to punk shows in Hawaii, finding the backdoors to success, and his band in which he covers Weird Al songs. This is a good one!Follow me on all the internet stuff.Twitter | Instagram | Website Get full access to REPLY ALT at danozzi.substack.com/subscribe

Today’s newsletter is once again a podcast. They’re available on Spotifies and Apples and all that. Oh and subscribe to REPLY ALT!If you were a listener of my old podcast, No Plus Ones, you will be familiar with today’s guest, David Anthony. But did you know that David also has an entire life outside the podcast? It’s true! In addition to being my former co-host, he is the former editor of The AV Club, a current newsletter writer, and current co-host of the Alkaline Trio-themed podcast, As You Were (along with Tim Crisp of the recently relaunched Better Yet).I attempted to make this an episode wherein listeners got to know David a little better. And for a while we did that—discussing his first childhood memory (puking in a McDonald’s) and his worst job (teenage fireworks store employee). But then wouldn’t you know it, we started ranting about the state of music journalism and weighed in on the recent chatter about the possibility of writer-owned and operated cooperative websites. Unsurprisingly, I took the pessimistic view that they sound nice in theory but are unlikely to work in the long run.So, to everyone who has asked me to bring back No Plus Ones, this episode is for you three people. The boys are back in town!!! Get full access to REPLY ALT at danozzi.substack.com/subscribe

Hey there and welcome to a fresh edition of REPLY ALT, music’s only email newsletter. Occasionally I like to mess around with the podcast feature of this newsletter by going to someone’s house and rummaging through their personal belongings while interviewing* them for an hour. (* = aimlessly shooting the shit because I refuse to prepare questions or topics or do anything that might make me seem like a person who has their shit together) Previous guests have included Chris Farren and Jenny Owen Youngs. Today’s guest is Lauren Denitzio of the band Worriers. We recorded this chat in Lauren’s bedroom which they very kindly let me live in for a month while they were on tour and I didn’t have a place to live. I’m very proud to say that I made a complete and total ass of myself on this one! Terrific!Lauren and I discussed:How they also write an email newsletter, called Get It Together. What writing a breakup record can do to your personal life. The function of a record label in 2020.The best email Lauren’s ever gotten. (From John K. Samson)And more. There’s a new Worriers record coming out next month called You or Someone You Know. I’ve always loved the way Lauren writes hooks, dating way back to their days in The Measure. They’ve got this way of twisting a note juuuust enough to render it instantly infectious. This record carries on that tradition, but its poppiness distracts from the fact that it’s the darkest bunch of songs Lauren’s written. Lots of sharp barbs and digs in there.Honestly, if you only have time to listen to the album OR this podcast, you should definitely choose to the album. But if you’ve got time for both, great. Also, I took this photo a few months ago, which appears on the back cover of the album, which is cool!: Get full access to REPLY ALT at danozzi.substack.com/subscribe

Growing up as an awkward music nerd in New Jersey, Lauren Denitzio never saw themselves fronting a band or playing punk rock. In 2017, they've done it twice - first as part of the crucially-underrated outfit The Measure [SA], whose album Notes was twice as good as most punk albums released in the 2010s and got half the recognition. In their second act, Worriers, Denitzio has further explored the semantics of the genre. With a slew of friends along for the ride, Denitzio has turned Worriers into something fearless, fun and fiery. Three chords and the truth has never sounded better. In September, Denitzio toured Australia for the very first time. Before a show at the Red Rattler in Sydney, they explained the key differences between basement shows and proper gigs, the freedom of a musical collective and being a polite punk. Worriers' third album, Survival Pop, is out now via Sideonedummy/Cooking Vinyl. You can stream, download and purchase the album here: http://worriers.bandcamp.com/album/survival-pop/ Follow Lauren/the band on Twitter and Instagram: @worriersmusicFollow the podcast on Twitter: @BarBandsPodFollow David on Twitter: @DJYwrites
